Brilliant books to keep you busy this month
Painful. Honest. Utterly heartbreaking.
You’ll read every page of Get Me to
21– all 436 of them – with your heart
in your mouth. It’s Gabi Lowe’s
agonising, courageous story about
trying to save her daughter’s life.
Jenna – who became the face of
organ donors in South Africa with her
#GetMeTo21 campaign – was young,
bright, articulate ... and had a rare,
degenerative lung disease. Pulmonary
arterial hypertension finally took her life
in June 2015 ... four months before her
21st birthday. An extraordinary tribute
to an extraordinary young girl, written
by a brave mother who hopes the
book will help others facing loss, pain,
challenges and adversity. MFBooks/
Jacana, R265
Jessica Pan was an unhappy introvert.
She wasn’t, she’s quick to point out,
unhappy because she was an introvert.
But she needed to do something about
the depression she was sinking into.
When she found herself in a sauna
– weeping, clutching a copy of Men’s
Health, ‘dressed as an assassin, reading
a guide to 8-minute abs’ and screaming
profanities at a spa employee, all to
win a free gym contract, she knew
something had to change. What would
it be like if, for one year, she lived as an
extrovert? Knowingly, willingly putting
herself in perilous social situations ....
those she’d usually avoid at all costs?
Sorry I’m Late - I Didn’t Want to Come
is Jess’s story of this painful, hilarious
year. Penguin, R320
Also well worth reading ...
Having two autistic children is every parent’s nightmare. Saving My Sons is Ilana
Gerschlowitz’s story, told with Marion Scher, of her determination to find a way
to help her sons.. Her tenacity bore fruit in the form of answers from international
experts and she has gone on to greatly improve the lives of her own two boys
as well as to help countless children facing learning challenges. Essentially, she
discovered that autism is a treatable illness and that early intervention is vital.
BookStorm, R320.
Steph is a federal agent ... one who
knows her job. She knows how to
interview people, and how to tell when
they’re lying. So when she finds a gun
in Zachary, her teenage son’s room, and
finds out he’s been in contact with a
terrorist group via email, she questions
him, and is convinced he’s telling the
truth that he has no idea about what’s
going on. But who, then, is setting up
her son? And why? Or is she just being
a typical mum and not seeing the truth
about her son? Keep You Close will
keep you guessing ... a chilling read by
Karen Cleveland. Penguin, R290
Another thriller for October ...
Megan Miranda’s The Last House
Guest keeps you on the edge of
your seat from the very first page.
Alternating between the summers of
2017 - when a young woman is found
dead on the beach while her friends
are celebrating at an end-of-summer
house party – and 2019, when her best
friend is still not convinced the death
was an accident, this is a chilling thriller
– with a wicked twist! Corvus, R313.
“Breast cancer stole my breasts, it did not steal my zest for life instead it
taught me how to appreciate the little things.”
10 Get It Middelburg\eMalahleni October 2019

A quick breakfast with Retha van Greunen, a breast cancer survivor, turned into
a morning of tears, joy, and a story of hope that many women needs to hear.
Retha was diagnosed with cancer on May 16, 2016. This date is engraved in her
mind as this was the start of an amazing journey of self-discovery.
Ten days later she had a double mastectomy.
“Nobody can prepare you for those words ‘You have breast cancer.’ It is cold, it is
clinical and it is heartless,” Retha said.
A woman going
through breast
cancer is stripped
of everything, her
womanhood taken
away and that is a
reality.
But instead of becoming a cancer
patient, she became a cancer warrior.
“My support network was incredibly
strong. My four children and my
husband became my make-up. I still
had to pack lunch, tie a shoe, and
comb someone’s hair. My family kept
me strong and sane.”
For a moment a curtain of sadness
covered her eyes when she said
a woman going through breast
cancer is stripped of everything, her
womanhood taken away and that is
a reality.
Retha described the period from her
diagnosis until her radiation stopped
on February 13 as automated.
“Everyday is set out. You do what you
have to do, then go for radiation, then you feel tired, then you go for radiation,
then you feel tired and it goes on and on and on. On Valentine’s Day I realised
I did not have to go for radiation any longer. There was a sense of what now?
What do I do? I am so use to the strict daily routine, now what?”
Yes, she did consider reconstruction, but before the procedure could be done
a small cancerous gland was found behind her breastbone.
It was during this period that Retha realised how little women really are
prepared for what is about to happen in their lives.
She started a journal and collected
inspiring quotes that carried her
through difficult times.
“There were times I wanted to stay in
bed, but the journal kept me going
and the idea of preparing woman
before they go for mastectomies
grew stronger by the day.”
Retha’s dream became a reality when
a friend started small paintings of
every quote that carried Retha. This
soon became a calendar, which she
sold to all her friends. The calendar
was the start of bigger things as
Retha started adding more and more
‘need-products’ in a beautiful box
and named it Bettie Bandana.
Inside the box she leaves a little
note, “Each day comes bearing its
own gifts and challenges. Here’s
something to give you a little push
or a pull on the days that you need
it. You are not alone! Bettie’s box is a
treasure of hope and blessings from
someone who understands your
journey.”
The items in the box include the
calendar to remind you that every
day is a gift and every day is filled
with hope. A scarf or bandana when
you need something to help you
‘hang’ in there and cover your head
because it can get really cold. A
journal because a life worth living, is
worth recording. Slippers for the days
when you deserve to put your feet
up, bath salts when you need some
time off, lip balm to brighten that
smile, toothpaste and toothbrush
because a beautiful smile is better
than any makeup. Hand sanitiser to
remind you to be grateful for all the
hands that are caring for you, a pen
because you are ‘INKredible’, a pink
ribbon to remind you to have hope
and tissues for good days and bad
days.
“Life did not change, I changed. I
learnt to appreciate little moments.
I fill up four memory boxes for my
children which I want to give to each
when they turn 21. Cancer is a gracedisease;
because it gives you time to
find a million blessings.”
Our
knockers
are important
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Pink ribbons popping up everywhere
reminds us how important it is to look after our ‘knockers’. Worldwide campaigns
are running to increase attention and support for the awareness, early detection and
treatment as well as palliative care of this disease.
Currently there is not sufficient
knowledge on the causes of breast
cancer; therefore, early detection of
the disease remains the cornerstone
of breast cancer control. When
breast cancer is detected early, and
if adequate diagnosis and treatment
are available, there is a good chance
that breast cancer can be cured.
If detected late, however, curative
treatment is often no longer an
option. In such cases, palliative care,
to relief the suffering of patients and
their families, is needed.
We visited Dr Thandi Ngcongo
from Orchid Medical Centre for
more insight into breast light, a
revolutionary way of detecting breast
cancer early.
First we need to understand the
types of breast cancer; the breasts are
made of fat, glands, and connective
(fibrous) tissue. The breast has several
lobes, which split into lobules that
end in the milk glands. Tiny ducts run
from the many tiny glands, connect
together, and end in the nipple.
These ducts are where 80% of breast
cancers occur. Ductal cancer is breast
cancer that arises in the ducts.
Cancer developing in the lobules is
termed lobular cancer. About 10%-
15% of breast cancers are of this type.
Other less common types of breast
cancer include inflammatory breast
cancer, medullary cancer, phyllodes
tumor, angiosarcoma, mucinous
(colloid) carcinoma, mixed tumors,
and a type of cancer involving the
nipple termed Paget’s disease.
Dr Thandi uses a breastlight to gain
an internal view of the breast.
This innovative device allows you a
clear view of the internal functions
of your breasts. Using harmless and
yet extremely powerful LED lights
to penetrate through the breast
tissue delivering a translucent effect.
The breastlight device will give
you a clearer idea if there are any
abnormalities by showing them as a
dark cluster.
“Now any abnormalities in the
form of a black mass or cluster can
easily be detected. In many cases
these clusters will be harmless or
easily treatable but the fact that the
breastlight has revealed them to you,
must raise red flags,” Dr Thandi said.
Early detection of the condition can
lead to effective treatment and a
positive prognosis. About 90% of
patients survive for many years after
diagnosis when breast cancer is
detected at the early stages. Regular
self-breast examination and regular
mammograms are key to early
detection. Presenting yourself early
for treatment may result in more
effective treatment, leading to a
reduction in pain and suffering and a
significant decrease in the loss of life.
“Breast cancer awareness should not
only be an October issue. Woman
should take note of their breasts and
act as soon as they feel something is
wrong.”
Know your lemons
Save your hooters, look after your lemons.
Text: ZITA GOLDSWAIN.
What do I look for?
Don’t think of a breast self-exam
as a hunt to find cancer, but to
understand the normal landscape
of your breasts. This involves both
looking and feeling.
Look in the mirror with your arms up,
then again with your hands on your
hips. Stand to the side and then face
forward.
The first symptoms of breast
cancer usually appear as an area of
thickened tissue in the breast or a
lump in the breast or an armpit.
Other symptoms include: Pain in
the armpits or breast that does not
change with the monthly cycle,
pitting or redness of the skin of
the breast, a rash around or on one
of the nipples, discharge from a
nipple, a sunken or inverted nipple,
a change in the size or shape of the
breast, peeling, flaking, or scaling of
the skin on the breast or nipple.
What is my risk?
For women, the average lifetime risk
for breast cancer is 1-iN-8, with most
being diagnosed over the age of
50. Your breast cancer risk increases
as you get older, as well as having
a higher exposure to estrogen.
Surprisingly, most women (80%)
diagnosed with breast cancer do not
have a family history of the disease.
When do I self-exam?
Starting at age 20, self-exams are a
casual way to understand what is
normal for you between scheduled
exams. Don’t feel guilty if you don’t
do it often, examining
once a season is usually
enough.
The best time to check?
A few days after your
period ends when you’re
least tender and swollen
(and if you are over 40,
an ideal time to schedule
a clinical exam and
mammogram).
No period? That is okay,
pick any day you like.
Plan your breast
screening
Clinical breast exams are a
time to create your breast
screening plan with your
doctor. Start by discussing
your family history and risk
type. Then use the time
to learn how to perform a
self-exam by getting one
yourself. Ask questions
and plan your screening
schedule together.
IT IS FRIDAY AFTERNOON; DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR
MARGARITA IS?
To make a classic margarita mix, all you really need are three basic
margarita ingredients:
• Tequila: silver or reposado is the best tequila for margaritas, but any kind of
tequila will work
• Freshly-squeezed lime juice: the key words here are freshly squeezed.
• Orange liqueur: Cointreau, maybe Grand Marnier but a good-quality Triple
Sec will also work.
Additional ingredients could include: Agave: if you would like a sweeter
margarita, feel free to mix in some agave syrup to taste, kosher salt: if you
would like to salt the rims of your glasses and additional lime slices for garnish.
Here is how you make the perfect Margarita
• Prep your glasses: If you would like to salt the rim of your glass, run a juicy
lime wedge around the rim, then dip it in coarse Kosher salt, and set aside.
• Combine your ingredients in a cocktail shaker: Combine your tequila, lime
juice, orange liqueur, and a few ice cubes in a cocktail shaker. Or if you
don’t have a cocktail shaker, you can shake things up in a mason jar or just
stir everything together in a measuring cup.
• Shake it, shake it, baby: Then give the mixture a good shake (or a good stir!)
until it is combined and chilled.
• Taste and add sweetener, if desired: Give the margarita a taste, and if you
think it needs extra sweetener, add in a teaspoon or two of agave
• (or simple syrup) at a time, until it reaches your desired level of sweetness.
• Strain and serve on the rocks. Garnished with a slice of lime, if you would
like.
ICED TEA PLEASE
On warm summer days, there’s
nothing more refreshing than a glass
of iced tea to quench your thirst.
This recipe is really simple. You will
need, 2 large lemons, 1 cup sugar, 2
cups fresh mint leaves, ½ cup of fresh
lemon juice and six tea bags.
How to make it:
Using a vegetable peeler, remove
bright yellow peel from lemons.
Combine lemon peel and sugar in a
medium saucepan with 1/2 cup water
and bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve
sugar. Lower heat and simmer 2
minutes. Remove from heat and stir in
mint. Cool to room temperature and
strain.
Steep the tea bags in 4 cups of
boiling water, covered, for 5 minutes.
Then remove tea bags. Stir in syrup,
lemon juice, 4 cups cold water, and
ice cubes. Serve in tall glasses filled
with ice and a few mint leaves.
IF YOU HAVE A LEMON, MAKE LEMONADE
Ingredients
1 cup white, granulated sugar (can reduce to 3/4 cup), 1 cup
water (for the simple syrup), 1 cup lemon juice and 2 to 3 cups
cold water (to dilute).
Method
To make the simple syrup, place the sugar and water in a small
saucepan and bring to a simmer. Stir so that the sugar dissolves
completely and remove from heat.
While the water is heating for the simple syrup, juice your lemons.
Depending on the size of the lemons, 4 to 6 of them should be
enough for one cup of juice.
Combine lemon juice, simple
syrup, water: Pour the juice and
the simple syrup sugar water into
a serving pitcher. Add 2 to 3 cups
of cold water and taste. Add more
water if you would like it to be
more diluted.
If the lemonade is a little sweet
for your taste, add a little more
straight lemon juice to it.
MOJITO FIXES EVERYTHING
For this cocktail we visit News Café. This original Mojito is a hot
favourite amongst their patrons.
You will need 2 tots Bacardi Light Rum, 1 tot Monin Mint Syrup,
4 lime wedges, 10 mint leaves and Soda Water to top it up.
To make this Mojito is very easy. You muddle the limes and slap
in mint leaves, add Bacardi and Monin Mint. Half fill the glass
with crushed ice. Stir mix, fill glass to the top with crushed ice
and top with soda.
Our question was what is muddled lime?
A muddler is a long, pestle-shaped tool used to crush fruit and
herbs. A mojito, for example, requires limes muddled with mint
leaves. Use a long, metal muddler and a thick-walled glass or
short metal shaker to avoid chipped glass or wood shards in
your drink.
Ons het op ’n stil
Sondagoggend saam
met Nicquille gaan
bak en brou. Om
die jong en ywerige
mensie agter die
stoof te sien, is omtrent
’n belewenis. So vinnig
soos sy eiers klits en meel sif so
aanhoudend gesels sy.
In ’n japtrap het sy vir ons die
heerlikste suurlemoen meringue tert
opgetower.
Tussen die gebak en brou het sy
vertel dat sy in Middelburg gebore
en getoë is.
“Ek het na matriek nie ’n idee gehad
wat ek wou doen nie. Al my vriende
is universiteit toe en ek kon net nie
besluit wat ek vir die res van my lewe
wil doen nie.”
Nicquille het toe by ’n plaaslike
natuurreservaat gaan werk, maar het
gou verveeld geraak met die roetine.
Iemand moes geweet het sy gaan
eendag naam maak in die kosbedryf
en sy is summier kombuis toe
gestuur.
“Ek het niks geweet van kosmaak nie.
Ek het nie eers gasvryheidstudies
as ’n skoolvak gehad nie. My eerste
herinnering van kosmaak was toe
ek agt teelepels bakpoeier in my
oatskoekie resep gegooi het, in
plaas van ’n agtste. Die koekies het
oral uitgeborrel. Ek was in die begin
maar skepties oor my vaardigheid in
die kombuis.”
Maar namate die tyd aangestap het,
het Nicquille begin eksperimenteer.
“Ek het na elke probeerslag na
die sjef toe gegaan en daar moes
geproe word. Op ’n dag is ek
ingeroep en daar is vir my gesê ek
hoef nooit weer te vra of dit reg is
nie, my passie laat my disse werk.”
Na drie jaar het die jong aspirant
sjef die rustigheid van Middelburg
verruil vir die stadsliggies en by
die Chefs Training and Innovation
Academy in Pretoria gaan studeer.
Vandag dra sy met trots haar pienk
sjefsbaadjie en bak en kook storms
los.
Nicquille droom ook baie groot. Sy
het gesê sy wil eendag ’n padstal
iewers op pad Kaap toe besit
waarheen mense van heinde en
verre sal stroom om haar gebak te
kom koop.
Intussen bak en brou sy tuis.
Ons het haar gevra wat sal sy voorstel
vir die perfekte piekniekmandjie,
aangesien lente nou in volle swang
is.
Hier is haar wenke: Vrugte-sosaties,
’n heerlike slaaitjie wat deur ’n
vleisbord gekomplimenteer word,
’n verskeidenheid olywe en kase en
natuurlik ’n Mojito of twee.
En toe ons haar vra wat sal sy maak as
die lewe ’n paar suurlemoene na haar
kant toe gooi, was haar eerste reaksie
“Waar is die tequila?”
Na die lagbui bedaar het, het sy haar
heerlike suurlemoen meringue tert
resep met ons gedeel.
Nicquille se vinnige suurlemoen meringue
tert
Kors
1 pakkie tennis beskuitjies, 125 g botter en suurlemoen zest.
Vulsel
1 blikkie kondensmelk en 250 ml suurlemoensap.
Meringues
3 eierwitte, 125 ml wit suiker en 30 ml water
Metode
Maak die koekies fyn. Smelt die botter en voeg dit by die
koekies. Meng goed en druk dit in die pannetjie van jou
keuse.
As
honey by microwaving it for 20 seconds and pour over the grapes.
Place the bowl with Camembert on the tray with the grapes. Place
both trays in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes until the pita is toasted,
the grapes roasted and the Camembert oozing. (The grapes and
Camembert will take the same amount of time, but keep an eye
on the pita chips as they may need to be removed a few minutes
earlier.) Serve right away.
Savoury potato pizza with rocket and pecorino
Potato pizza? You’ve got to be kidding! Actually we’re not. It’s a real thing and
Romans have been savouring it for ages. Of course they call it pizza con le
patate, which admittedly sounds a lot more impressive than potato pizza. There
is no tomato base and zero cheese, so it’s kinder to the waistline and your
vegan friends can come to dinner.
You’ll need:
For the pizza dough ... 400g bread flour; 100g semolina; 1 packet (10g) instant
yeast; 1/4 tsp salt; 260ml lukewarm water; 40ml milk; 1 tsp honey
For the topping ... 1kg baby potatoes (sliced as thinly as possible using a
mandolin); 3 sprigs fresh rosemary; garlic-flavoured olive oil; Cape Herb & Spice
Savoury spice
To make:
Mix the flour, semolina, yeast and salt. Gradually add the water and mix. Add
the milk and honey to the last bit of water and add to the dough. Knead for 12
minutes. Put the dough, brushed with olive oil, in a large clean bowl, cover with
cling film and a tea towel and put in a nice warm spot for an hour to an hour
and a half until the dough has doubled in size.
Knock it back to remove all the air, cut into 4 equal pieces and shape into balls.
While the bread proves, parboil the potatoes in plenty of salted water until just
tender – it takes mere minutes. Drain, dry and toss with a generous glug of
olive oil so everything is well coated.
To assemble the potato pizza, roll out dough on a sheet of non-stick baking
paper. Brush with garlic-flavoured oil.
Pack with potatoes, dust with Tastebud Savoury spice and sprinkle generously
with rosemary leaves. Grind over black pepper and give it a final tiny splash of
olive oil. Place the pizza with the baking paper (this makes it so much easier to
handle!) on a preheated non-stick baking tray or a hot pizza stone and bake at
200 ° Celsius for 10 to 15 minutes until done.
Drizzle a bit of lemon juice and olive oil over the rocket, give it a grinding
of black pepper and pile onto the potato pizza along with a few shaving of
Parmesan or pecorino (not for the vegans!) Tuck in right away while it’s warm.
This recipe makes 4 medium potato pizzas.
Zesty prawn and
zucchini pasta
Eating light and bright is always a
good idea, but in summer we really
crave it. It doesn’t come much faster
or healthier than this prawn and
zucchini pasta – which is on the table
in under 15 minutes. The Tastebud
Zesty spice has intensely citrus notes
– the perfect foil for the richness of
prawns and the slight earthiness of
zucchini. Add parsley and basil for
extra freshness and tuck in knowing
it’s not just good, but good for you
too.
You’ll need:
16-20 prawns (deveined and peeled);
a fat clove garlic (minced); extra
virgin olive oil; 800g zucchini ribbons;
Cape Herb & Spice Tastebud Zesty
spice, bunch of flatleaf parsley (leaves
only, roughly chopped); tiny basil
leaves for garnish
To make:
Heat a generous glug of olive oil
in a large non-stick frying pan. Add
the garlic and prawns and stir-fry
until cooked through. Remove the
prawns. Add another glug of olive
oil to the pan if necessary. Fry the
zucchini ribbons over high heat until
just done – it takes mere seconds,
you want it al dente not mushy. Dust
the zucchini with Tastebud Zesty
spice, add parsley and the prawns.
Toss through to ensure everything is
coated with the spice.
Garnish with teeny basil leaves and
serve right away.
Serves four as a light meal.
Cheers to rhinos & ellies
You know we Get It girls love a safari ... and are passionate about our wildlife. And
we’re not averse to glass of wine either. So when we combine the two ... bliss. This
month we’re raising our glasses to wineries that embrace conservation. Cheers!
Balance, the quirky range of generous, everyday wines, has
been relaunched after a stylish makeover ... and besides
looking (and tasting) good, also supports desert elephant
conservation. With Hank the elephant as the wine’s mascot,
Balance has adopted the Elephant Human Relations Aid
(EHRA) as a Corporate Social Investment initiative. For every
bottle sold, a contribution is made to fund the EHRA PEACE
project, an educational programme promoting the peaceful
cohabitation of local communities with desert elephants in
Southern Africa. Taking the project even further, the wine’s
packaging uses digital technology linked to an exciting
online game to support this initiative ... play and you can
win Balance Bucks to buy more wine, and a donation is
made on your behalf. There are two ranges ... the affordable
Classic easy-drinking range and the Balance Winemaker’s
Selection range ... all really lovely wines for a summer
celebration. Available from your local bottle store or online
for between R47 and R67. Details: Play the game and buy the
Garden tips for
October
We’re planting …regal pelargonium ‘Novita’ for its
knockout colours and neat, bushy growth.
It looks good anywhere; in large containers, in
coastal gardens, and in the garden in full sun or
semi-shade. It doesn’t get leggy like older varieties
used to do and it is a great bloomer. The colour
range is purple, violet, dark red with a purple eye
and a pink bicolour. The medium-sized flowers
cover the bush. Plant in well-drained fertile soil and
protect from the frost in colder areas. Garden plants
need regular watering but allow the soil to dry out
before watering again. Plants in containers need
watering more often. Fertilise monthly with Vigorosa
fertiliser.
For further information: www.ballstraathof.co.za
October garden tasks
• Plant summer colour. Annuals that grow quickly
and easily from seed are alyssum, cosmos, lavatera,
portulaca, California poppy, and nasturtium. They all
do best in full sun.
• Trim back invasive groundcovers to give other
plants room to grow.
• Renew containers. Replace the potting soil and
fill with summer annuals, trailing groundcovers or
grasses.
• Fertilise perennials with Vigorosa or granular fertiliser
3:1:5 or 5:1:5, and annuals with a liquid fertiliser. Use
either pink or blue hydrangea food for hydrangeas.
• Water regularly and spread a layer of mulch over beds
to conserve water and keep the roots cool.
• Mow lawns at least once a week, but if it is very hot and
dry mow less frequently and set blades higher.
Perfect for patios… snack-sized sweet orange peppers are easy
to grow in pots on the patio or on a sunny windowsill. ‘Sweet
Snack’ pot peppers produce loads of crunchy, delicious fruit,
about 25 to 30 fruits in two flushes. It’s a healthy snack for kids
and good for chopping into salads, platters and stir-fries. The
more you pick the better they produce. The plants are just as
pretty and stay compact (50cm high). They just need regular
watering, plant food once a week and a warm, sunny spot.
Grow a lemon tree
To grow a lemon tree is not difficult
at all.
Outdoor growing: Due to lemon’s
cold sensitivity it should be planted
on the south side. try to protect
it from frost by planting it close to
the house, and be sure to cover
it during winter months. Lemon
trees do like full sunshine for adequote
growth. The trees available
at local nurseries was specifically
created for the highveld conditions.
Lemon trees can tolerate a range
of soil types, but most prefer welldrained,
slightly acidic soil. Lemon
trees should be set slightly higher
than ground level. Therefore, dig a
hole somewhat shallower than the
lenght of the root ball. Place the
tree in the hole and replace the soil,
tamping firmly as you go. Water
sufficiently and add some much
to retain moisture. Lemon trees require
deep watering once weekly.
If necessary prining may be done
to maintain their shape and height.

A gem
at the coast
We’re fussy travellers ... and have a long list of
non-negotiables when we travel for business or
pleasure. And in Umhlanga’s The Capital Pearls,
we’ve found a real gem (see what we did there!).
It has everything, and we mean everything, we
need. There’s a selection of rooms depending
on when we visit and who we’re travelling
with (from studios when we’re there alone
for a day or two doing business, through to
between one and four bedroom apartments
when we’re with the whole family shebang ...
think noisy grandkids and tired in-laws). You can
eat in (there’s 24-hour in-room dining, and the
apartments have fully equipped kitchens) or
pop downstairs and within a stone’s throw you’ll
find dozens of restaurants for all tastes. There’s a
kids’ play area, complimentary entrance to Planet
Fitness (work off that breakfast!), and (be still my
beating heart) more than 60 shops in The Pearls
Mall. And so, so much more. Splashed champers
on your evening dress ... a laundry service. Kids
want to go back to the beach ... a comp shuttle
service within a five km radius. An urgent work
mail ... high-speed Wi-Fi. Add a resort pool, a pool
deck and bar, and Indian Ocean views to take
your breath away and you’ve got the (postcard)
picture. Rates obviously vary hugely depending
on type of room and time of visit. Details: Central
