When thinking of mandatory Pride Month
activities, one thing comes straight (pun
intended) to my mind: drag brunch.
My first five years in New York, I worked
every weekend and never got to brunch
anywhere. In the last two years of having
my weekends back, I just haven’t made
it. I know there are plenty of restaurants
that host drag brunch, especially in Hell’s
Kitchen, but I wanted my first experience
to be at Lips on East 56th Street.
I’d been to Lips once before, a few years
ago when I interviewed
the winners
of The Glam
Awards.
It was
just like I
remembered:
giant
high-heel
chandeliers by
the bar, plastic
legs (also in
the highest
of high heels)
coming out of
the wall and
a giant pair of
sparkly gold lips
over the stage.
I met my
boyfriend and
two friends, Jack
and Michael, for
the 12:00 show:
I was 15 minutes
late, which our
waitress (one of the
performers) Lauren
Ordair,
was quick to comment on. “You know,”
she told me with a smile, hugging me from
behind, “they have this amazing new app
for smartphones—it’s called CLOCK, and
this other amazing app called GOOGLE
MAPS that tells you how long it takes to
get places! You should check it out.” I knew
we’d gotten the best waitress immediately.
Two pitchers were already on the table,
mimosas and Bloody Marys. I poured
myself a Bloody Mary: One sip and I
already felt tipsy. “These are strong!” I
said, taking a larger sip.
The theme was Broadway Brunch, all of the
food named after musicals like Phantom of
the Opera (Belgian Waffles), Wicked (Eggs
Benedict) and Mary Poppins (Buttermilk
Pancakes). I opted to split Les Miserables
(Chicken Sandwich) and Hairspray
(Cheeseburger) with Jack, while Michael
ordered Sister Act (Salmon Benedict), and
my boyfriend ordered Cats (Ham & Cheese
Omelet).
The food was delicious, and Lauren Ordair
came by frequently to refill our pitchers
and remind me that I was late.
Just as we finished
our food (big portions
that were delicious),
our hostess Ginger
Snap took the stage,
and the show began.
(She did a medley
from The Sound
of Music, with the
disclaimer, “I don’t
look like fucking
Maria—I look like
I ate the bitch!”)
Every song was
Broadway, and we
all lived for every
moment: Lauren
Ordair was
the second to
perform, and we
died for every
outfit reveal
and cartwheel.
I noticed
that most of
the people
there were in large
groups, celebrating birthdays and
bachelorette parties—most of the patrons
women, with several of their boyfriends
scattered here and there. (I decided this
was absolutely what I wanted to do for
my next birthday.) At the end of the show,
Ginger Snap told us, “You don’t have to be
gay to celebrate Pride,” which received a
standing ovation from everyone there.
Drag Me to Brunch
Regardless of your gender, sexual
orientation or anything else: I’ll see you at
drag brunch—and don’t be late!
#QUEENSPRIDENYC
The first Queens Pride
March was in 1993.
It’s the second largest
Pride celebration in
NYC, with more than
40,000 spectators!
With a jubilant parade,
four blocks of party
area, six bars and two
stages, Queens Pride
kicked off WorldPride
with a bang.
Dominique Jackson
(“Pose” on FX)
introduced this
year’s Queens Pride
headliner, Kristine W,
who has had 17 #1
dance songs and an
endless catalog of
hits. Kristine W gave
the crowd everything
they wanted while they
danced in the streets
during a passing
rainstorm, performing
with her two backup
dancers and a guitar.
On the other stage,
DJ Eddie Cruz once
again kept the stage
alive with one hit song
after another, and with
too many performers
to note. (Next year,
you have to go see
how amazing this day
is!) The Club Evolution
stage was hosted by
Laritza DuMont and
Lorena Saint Cartier,
who shared the stage
with iconic drag
queens Laura Martinez,
Victoria Chase, Vickiana
& Tiffney LeClerk Herr,
just to name a few.
The outdoor festival
lasted until 6 p.m.,
but everyone kept the
party going at Queens
gay bars like Club
Evolution, Friend’s
Tavern, Hombres, True
Colors, Music Box and
Alejandro’s Bar.
The people came to
Queens, and Queens
Pride came through for
WorldPride. Check out
celebration!
THOMAS
TALKS
ABOUT: PRE-CUM
I get a surprising amount
of questions about precum,
and my YouTube
video on it has the most
hits of all my videos.
You can check out my
video series, “Shit They
Won’t Tell You in Sex
Ed,” at SexEdByThomas.
com. Below I respond
to two questions about
pre-cum: Can it transmit
HIV, and can you get
pregnant from it?
My girlfriend and
I both identify
as bisexual, and
sometimes have sex
with guys. We recently
had sex with a guy, and
he tried to tell us that
he didn’t need to use
a condom until he was
going to cum, because
he said pre-cum can’t
get us pregnant. I
disagreed and made
him use a condom
anyways. Afterwards,
my girlfriend and I
Googled it and found
a lot of different
answers. So… can precum
get us pregnant?
We don’t want to
get pregnant, but also
don’t want to use the
pill, because we don’t
have sex with men that
often. – Female, bi, 27
You’ve probably found
conflicting information
online, because the
answer is a little bit
complicated. Precum
comes from the
Cowper’s glands,
located at the base of
the urethra and under
the prostate. The
purpose of pre-cum is to
increase the mobility of
sperm cells—lube up the
urethra, so to speak. In
pre-cum alone, there is
not sperm. HOWEVER,
semen consists of a few
things, including 2-5%
sperm from the testes,
65-75% fluids from the
seminal vesicles and
25-30% fluids from
the prostate, and this
mixture all passes
through the urethra, the
same track as pre-cum.
So, if a guy has recently
cum, it’s possible that
some sperm could be
left over in the track and
come out with pre-cum.
The chances of getting
pregnant in this scenario
are very low, but not
impossible. If you don’t
want to get pregnant,
absolutely use condoms.
I always make guys put
on condoms before
they actually cum,
CONCERNS?
because I didn’t think
you could get anything
from pre-cum. Then
my friends told me
that you can actually
get HIV from pre-cum.
Is this true? And what
are the chances? What
about from oral sex?
I really didn’t think it
was that risky, but now
I’m nervous. I want
to be safe, but, like,
condoms for oral sex?
Ugh, no thank you. –
Male, gay, 23
Your friends are correct:
HIV can be found in precum.
The concentration
of the virus is generally
lower in pre-cum, but
it is still there. For anal
sex, this is important
to know, because there
are often small tears
that could allow for easy
transmission of the virus.
In terms of oral sex, the
chances of acquiring
HIV from pre-cum, or
even cum, are VERY low.
You would pretty much
have to have an open
wound in your mouth.
Further, undetectable
= untransmittable,
so if your partners
are adhering to their
medication, they
shouldn’t be able to
transmit the virus. Also,
you’re likely a good
candidate or PrEP, so
check that out!
CELEBRITY CORRESPONDENT
INTERVIEW
iCandy an
Evening With
Peppermint
Kicking off WorldPride,
the illustrious RuPaul
queen and Broadway
sensation Peppermint
will be presenting a onewoman,
live cabaret show
at Gramercy Theater on
June 28, 2019. The show
will feature Cazwell and
is sponsored by MAC. It
will showcase the life of
Peppermint after RuPaul.
A stable and popular
fixture in New York
City’s dazzling nightlife,
Peppermint is an actress,
singer, TV personality and
activist. She is also the
first trans woman to be
cast in a major Broadway
role in the play Head
Over Heels.
I exchanged questions
and answers with Miss
Peppermint regarding
WorldPride, her
upcoming live show and
her future endeavors.
With WorldPride quickly approaching,
how are you planning to celebrate?
Of course I’m looking to all of the
world-class New York City nightlife and
WorldPride events and parties and the
parade. I’m going to try to enrich myself
and dive into the rich history of our
community. But most importantly, I’m
doing a one-woman live cabaret show at
Gramercy Theater on June 28 to kick off
Pride weekend!
You’re doing an event with Cazwell.
Can you talk about that: where, when,
how and what?
Yes, it is “iCandy, an Evening With
Peppermint.” It was actually named
by Carson Kressley, so I might have to
send him $5 or something. Anyway, I’m
performing for the first time at Gramercy
Theater, complete with dancers, a live
band and my bestie Cazwell. We are
also going to be debuting some new
music. The show covers everything that
happens to me between “Drag Race”
and today, basically a year in review. I’ll
be finishing off the weekend riding on
the MAC Cosmetics float for the third
time in a row during the Pride March.
That show is also sponsored by MAC. I
have a great relationship with them, and
I’m really happy that they’ve been able
to support me.
What did you walk away with from
your Broadway experience?
I have a chance to see how different
people work. It really got me into shape
with getting into drag early and during
the day. Most of all I walked away with a
sense of bonding and community from
the Broadway family.
Any new music on the horizon?
Yes. I can’t say I have a new album ready
yet, but I’m writing some new music right
now. I’ll probably try some of it out at the
show on the 28th.

I know you love to travel. Where will
your travels bring you this summer and
beyond?
I will be traveling to Europe again and doing
some traveling in the United States.
I’ve been spending a lot of time
at home, surprisingly. Just got
back from the Los Angeles
Pride. It was so
much fun!
Aside from all of the
things I’ve mentioned, are
there any new projects in
the works?
I just finished watching
season one of “Pose” in
preparation for season
two. I attended the
premiere, and it was
so fantastic. I think
people are going
to be in for some
real surprises,
and maybe
even a sweet
treat, if you
know what
I mean.
Did I hear that you
were doing a weekly
podcast?
That’s totally true.
Cazwell and I are kicking
off our podcast this
year; the launch is Pride
Week. We’re both very
excited. It’s going to be
an advice podcast where
listeners can write in with
all of their deep-burning
questions, and we give
really bad advice. It’s
going to be all the rage.
