Crafting Eco-friendly Materials To
Augment 3D Printing Technology
Chris Jackson
Founder

Cover Story
Initiated in 1980s from a flawed machine, the 3D
printing technology now creates anything that one
has in mind. It is one of the most rapidly thriving
technologies, which can produce highly complex
products for almost every industry. What started as an
instrument for research and development, has flourished
into a crucial business tool today.
The applications of 3D printing are innumerable and
there are limitless possibilities for creating splendid and
highly accurate 3D printed products and art pieces.
However, contiguous to the evolving printing
technology, equivalent efforts are required for the
development and the selection of material being used for
printing. The material with right properties must be
selected in order to ensure print process quality along

with minimized environmental impact. Terrafilum
Engineered Filaments is a company that was
established with a goal to offer the users with highest
quality eco-friendly filament solutions satisfying all of
their printing needs.
Incepted with a Selfless Approach

Though Chris Jackson, the Founder of Terrafilum
Engineered Filaments, started the firm with a thought to
help people in solving problems with his material
knowledge, there is much more interesting story behind

the inception of the Terrafilum .
Chris was born with a physical disability that affected his
ability to utilize his forearm and hands, but he has never
considered this as a limitation, in fact, he had that spark
to try and do everything that everybody does. He
believed that with the power of honesty, optimism,
planning and energy; one could do anything and conquer
any problem. Today, with his extreme efforts and
perseverance, he has become a skilled coach, mentor and
business leader with over 30 years of experience as a
Chemical Engineer. Throughout his professional journey,
Chris has worked in diverse fields such as Chemicals,
Plastics, Healthcare and Custom Manufacturing.
Along with business and manufacturing, this determined
leader has tremendous passion for golf. He has always
held his golf clubs in a distinctive way by anchoring it
around his right arm. The uses of standard clubs limited
his ability and forced him to fashion a new design for his
grip. Working with a major golf equipment supplier, he
realized that he was not alone with this struggle. He
developed a prototype by working for hours with an
equipment designer and various other grip solutions were
fabricated until the final design was put to the test. As a
result, Chris came up with different designs and polymer
formulations that provided him the strength he needed
from the material, along with the chemical resistance and
a suitable coating. Having solved his problem, he
realized that if he could coordinate himself then he could
help many others with his material knowledge. A few

months later in 2017, he established Terrafilum to take
his good thought to the next step.
Serving Eco-Friendly 3D Printing Filaments
green vision has its own custom inventory management
system and has integrated lean principles for waste
minimization in the manufacturing processes.
Aiming Betterment of Clients along with the
Environment

While designing a new product, Terrafilum focuses on
An Overachieving Persona Leading Terrafilum
Having achieved such accreditations throughout his
journey, Chris is always ready to learn new things and
savors the challenge to figure out how things can work.

At Terrafilum , he handles Research & Development and
Marketing & Sales. As these activities demand time,
work and presence, Chris finds it an exciting challenge to
balance job activities of these very distinct departments.
Chris Jackson has always been fascinated by the
advances in printing technology and material versatility.
As he has an educational background in chemical
engineering along with business experience, it has
stimulated him tremendously to move further in this
field. Further, the ever-learning man has not stopped
there. In his mid-career he decided to get a master’s
degree in business with an emphasis in finance. In
addition, Chris has also achieved Master Black Belt
status in Six Sigma and LEAN, which make him a
quality fanatic.

The Leading Firm In On-demand Manufacturing
3D printing is considered as one of the most significant
technological advancements of the era and has
become the most important part of the modern
industry. What makes the technology unique is its ability to
print complex shapes and interlocking parts without the
need for any form of assembly. It has many advantages over
the traditional approach but the most important one is its
time saving character. It has the ability to create small or
complicated shapes at small cost and in short period of
time. The technology has proved its importance in various
fields such as Medical, Architecture, Construction,
Computers, Art & Jewellery, Electronics, Robotics, and
many more. Evidently, the technology is disrupting the
market with on-demand manufacturing by its side. In ondemand
manufacturing, the manufacturer partners with a
supplier that has rapid prototyping and low volume
production capabilities. Production can be scaled up scaled
back as needed. This diminishes the risk of outages as well
as wastages resulting in financial savings. The 3D printing
industry is getting highly inclined toward the on-demand
manufacturing and 3D Compare.com with its world
leading on-demand manufacturing platform has established
itself as the most prominent firm in the field.
Trustworthy and Transparent Platform to Get Best
Finished Products
3D Compare was incepted keeping one aim in mind—to
diminish the pain points in manufacturing. Established in
London, UK in 2017, 3D Compare is a platform that
compares prices and solutions for the on-demand
manufacturing economy. It helps the customers with
innovative and wide range of technologies and materials to
make the 3D product. 3DCompare envisions providing
continuously developing on-demand manufacturing market
with a trustworthy and transparent site using the tools and
resources to get superior objects at the best prices.
Manufacturing Options for Rapid Prototyping
3DCompare has variety of innovative technologies to create
the desired product. One of them is 3D Printing Prototypes.
This technology works best for complex rapid prototypes and
produce results to very fine tolerance keeping low prices. This
technology is continuously improving and providing variety
of options such as Stereolithography (SL) that uses an
ultraviolet laser focused to turn liquid thermoset resin into
solids. Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) uses nylon-based
powder to achieve similar results. One more innovation using
atomized metal powder welded into a solid is highly used; it is
named as Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS). Multi Jet
Fusion is used in selective applications of fusing and detailing
agent across a bed of nylon powder while Polyjet is nothing
but a jet spraying liquid polymer onto a build platform.
One more technique in which 3DCompare has expertise is
CNC Machining. This superior process has ability to hold
tight tolerance. It can work for extensive range of materials
including high-quality metal and plastic parts. CNC
machining allows the use of true production grade materials.
Plastic Injection Molding is considered as a stepping stone
from prototyping to large scale production. This process
allows for repeatable high tolerance and multiple materials.
To achieve comparable results to the final product, it is
essential to use same process and materials.
Laser Cutting is used where more complicated and high
precision prototype parts are involved as the technology can
even cut metals with high accuracy along with stone, glass,
wood, plastic, etc. Further, with 3D Scanning, a product or its
parts can be reverse engineered to improve it. This is also used
for documenting existing products.
3DCompare wants to be the most reliable website for people
for ordering 3D Printing, CAD Designing, CNC Machining,
Injection Moulding, Laser Cutting, and to reach at that point
the firm is working very hard to create the biggest database of
manufacturing partners.
ANYCUBIC:
Making 3D Printers Precise, Reliable And
Affordable For Everyone
The rise of 3D printing or additive manufacturing
has highly simplified the creation of extremely
complex geometries and structures that are
impossible to create using traditional manufacturing
methods. Initially used for fast prototyping and research
purposes, 3D printing brings great freedom to design
highly customized products complementing the need of
modern customers. Today, as various business entities
are harnessing additive manufacturing to unfold its
unseen sides, this technology is rapidly being evolved in
terms of printing speed, accuracy, materials, and costeffectiveness.
Having seen the huge potential of 3D
printing, Shenzhen ANYCUBIC Technology Co. Ltd.
was born with the slogan—“Born to create, created to
imagine.” ANYCUBIC always seeks the development
step-by-step, and as a startup, its team has spent all of
their efforts on R&D, products optimization, and
customer service.
Justifying Self-presence with Successful Offerings
Since the inception of ANYCUBIC in 2015, its team has
20

eing rocket science. With such a belief system, its team
always strives to not only bring something new to the
market but also to make their offerings easy to use, as
they did in the case of ANYCUBIC PHOTON. This
product is one of the most affordable resin 3D printers
that offer ultra-high details and that too with the least
hassle to handle. Moreover, the first-timers are not
required to do complex internet connection and debug,
and just simply plug-and-play.
In addition to its innovative and user-friendly offerings,
ANYCUBIC is also optimizing its supply chains, online
markets, and customer service to offer the best value to
clients. Notably, the firm’s after-sales and technical
support team respond to emails within 24 hours
worldwide, which helps their customers solve their
product related issues. Besides, ANYCUBIC team also
makes YouTube tutorials and runs Facebook support
groups, which they think would make their brand stand
apart in the long run.
Passion Turned into Profession
James Ouyang, the Co-founder of ANYCUBIC, is
someone who has always thought of being the change
rather than expecting it to be done by others. A Ph.D.
holder in Chemical & Material Engineering decided to
“
make the change and enter the new 3D printing business
instead of being a lecturer. As ANYCUBIC was founded
by a group of childhood buddies, initially, they knew
nothing in detail about 3D printing except passion, which
was the biggest challenge for them. Speaking of his
team’s journey, James says, “It took us ages to make
progress on hardware and software development.”
However, he sees that as an advantage, because as a
result of that scenario they could develop 3D printers
totally from a newbie’s perspective and deliver products
to meet the new users’ requirement.
Further, considering ANYCUBIC as a fruit of team
efforts, James thanks his talented engineer team, as they
did it together in the most arduous circumstances. Today,
as ANYCUBIC team of around 300 employees is
offering products worldwide, James finds it a bit
challenging to manage everything and make decisions
being a responsible person. Moreover, though additive
manufacturing is going to be widespread in every
industry in future, due to the overall high cost and lack
of a perfect solution to specific applications, James
predicts that only highly customized fields with good
profits like aviation, dentists, and jewelers would firstly
step into 3D printing.
At ANYCUBIC, we keep focusing
on R&D to innovate products
that truly meet the customers’
needs and push 3D printing
into different fields.
processes, the ink (filament) used by the 3D printer and
its importance cannot be underestimated. Headquartered
in Barre, Vermont— Filabot is focused on high-quality
product development. The idea behind its inception lies
in an environmental cause as it was conceived to develop
a machine that could convert plastic input plastics could
be newly produced sources or from waste plastic into 3D
filament.
Developing Ecologically Responsible and Sustainable
Solutions
Filabot was established in 2011 and today it is an
Leader Envisioned to Use Technology for a Noble
Cause
What fascinates Tyler McNaney; the CEO of Filabot is
the fact that the Fused Deposit Material (FDM) and
24

Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) 3D printing enables
creating a closed-loop recycling system. This allows the
user to take plastics and turn it into filament that can be
converted into 3D prints again.
Tyler’s move of creating Filabot to recycle plastic waste
named him as amongst the “Most Successful
Entrepreneurs of the Next Ten Years” by ‘The World
Future Society.’ Recently, in 2018, Forbes magazine
featured Tyler in “Forbes 30 Under 30 to Watch: In
Manufacturing and Industry.” Filabot has also been
published in Popular Science, Fast Company, and Techcrunch
for its innovative work. Today, Tyler proudly
gives credit for his success to mentors in his life for
allowing him to follow his dream and discover several
options. It also taught him to be a good leader and gave
the motivation to strive hard to move forward and
achieve the goal.
Of all the applications of 3D printing, one that has
produced a strong impact on Tyler is ‘e-Nable hands.’
When asked more about it, he asserted, “e-Nable hands
is a community of individuals who work together to print
prosthetic limbs. These limbs are built at over 99% of the
cost of conventional limbs. Outgrowing these prosthetic
limbs is no longer a problem as it is simple to upgrade.
This community has taken 3D printing and applied it to a
real-world problem. This community is fantastic and can
truly show the good we can do.”
“
Strategy for Staying Ahead
Presently, at the Filabot’s office, Tyler has a close group
of multitalented team who are actively involved in
running marketing meetings to designing the latest
products using CAD software to inventing novel things,
and building unique projects. Likewise, the rapidly
changing technologies make it challenging for Tyler to
define and express his vision to the team. Tyler sets his
vision according to the latest trends in the 3D printing
technology, new innovations or changes made by others
in the sector, and the information or feedback received
on their products. Therefore, as per these
transformations, Tyler makes dynamic and everchanging
future strategies for his company.
Filabot always strives to make new advancements in 3D
printing technology and is continuously updating its
processes to improve the existing products as well as
newly planned products. It is always making moves that
shift it closer to the goal of recycling the abundant
quantity of plastic. The team constantly works to
understand the detailed formula so that the extruding of
many types of plastics is possible. Also, it actively works
with other companies to provide testing services on
different materials to see if they can be converted to
filaments with Filabot’s system and these associations
help in learning more about the product and ways to
improve them.
Our Hardware allows for at
point recycling creating a
closed loop system.
JAMPT Corporation:
Pioneering The Revolutions In Metal-3D Printing Technology
Since the prelude of 3D printing (additive
manufacturing), its beneficial applications in
producing small quantities of complex parts with a
higher pace have been noticed among manufacturing
circles. Today, 3D printing, particularly metal-3D printing is
being used more for industrial products. It has huge
potential to be deployed not only in aerospace and medical
but also in products for general consumers such as
automobiles, industrial machinery, and home appliances.
Moreover, to help overcome numbers of key challenges
such as globalization of manufacturing bases, inventory
management, logistics efficiency, and inheritance of
technology, faced by companies today, additive
manufacturing (AM) can be helpful in many ways. Being a
game-changing technology, 3D Printing promises to bring
the new idea of “agile manufacturing” to many industries.
Though 3D printing is competent in changing the landscape
of the manufacturing industry, technologies and
manufacturing processes involved in it are yet to be fully
optimized in all the fields. The process starting from raw
material powder, manufacturing process (forming
conditions), and printing equipment to postprocessing—still
has rooms for technological progress in
the future. Further, as business opportunities could be born
in several fields, the 3D printing industry has so much
potential to grow in the coming years. Harnessing the
potential of 3D printing, JAMPT Corporation (Japan
Additive Manufacturing & Processing Technology) is
supporting the recovery of Japanese manufacturing and the
logistics revolution.
Aim to be a One-Stop Solution Provider
United by the strong bonds of ambition, with the aim of
becoming the world’s leading AM company, JAMPT was
established in 2017 to provide 360° solutions in metal-3D
printing. Knowing the fact that covering whole
manufacturing process chain is the key when stepping
forward with clients, JAMPT covers whole AM value chain
and provides one-stop AM service aiming for
industrialization of AM technology and commercial
production of AM parts, together with its clients.
More concretely, its services and functions include
production of high-quality raw material powder specifically
for metal 3D printing, manufacturing process technology
applying advanced simulation technology (based on
contract manufacturing experience of prototypes), joint
development of metal AM parts with clients, joint
development of metal AM system/machine, and postprocessing.
A Simplified Approach to New Product Development
A manufacturer always creates a product to fill a need or
want of its target market. While doing this, it requires a
huge capital to develop a whole set of a new product. In the
case of JAMPT, it makes the use of Rapid Prototyping (RP)
to develop and introduce new products. This is done
without making any capital investment for a specific new
production line. Therefore, RP is advantageous in reducing
the introduction cycle of new products.
Moreover, under the current technological scenario, Rapid
Prototyping with metal 3D printing enables superior
manufacturing of complicated shapes and difficult-to-work
materials compared to other conventional methods.
Therefore, 3D printing is a preferred method by the team of
JAMPT, which is useful for assisting their customers from
aerospace and medical fields.
A Support System Helping JAMPT to Conquer
Challenges
As JAMPT was established as a joint venture company
combining each partner’s specialty, it faced some
challenges initially, where integration of each company’s
function in full and utilizing its existing business networks
was one of them. Further, as JAMPT aimed at the
industrialization of AM rather than just prototyping of
products, it is momentous to detect customers’ potential
needs precisely and consult them to further pursue the
world of metal AM together.
In the beginning, the AM manufacturing method was a
novel method for many of JAMPT’s clients. Therefore, in a
very first phase of forming an industrial partnership with
clients, securing budget from them for the joint
26

development of AM parts has often been an issue for the
company. However, the President and CEO of JAMPT
Corporation, Noritaka Yasuda managed and promoted
AM projects with JAMPT’s clients with his prior extensive
expertise and business relationship in machinery division at
a general trading company. Today, his background and
business relationships are extensively helping JAMPT to
excel and promote AM projects. Additionally, in the last
year, Noritaka and his team have successfully installed AM
parts into a vehicle which was launched to space. This was
a big milestone for Japanese AM market. Furthermore, the
torchbearer CEO looks ahead to come up with more real
applications to develop with JAMPT’s clients from various
industries.
Standing Apart with Uniqueness
In the industry evolving with a rapid pace, JAMPT knows
how to stand apart from other market players. One of its
biggest strengths in the business is capability of making raw
material metal powder produced by Plasma Rotating
Electrode Process (PREP), which is the best fit to AM.
Currently, most entities in the AM industry use traditional
metal powder, which was utilized in the historic powder
metallurgy industry, such as sintering. However, the team of
JAMPT believes that this traditional powder is not
optimized for AM as AM process, or 3D printer ideally
requires sphericity, satellite-free, and less-gas pore, which is
almost realized only by PREP powder.
Apart from that, the firm’s partnership with KOIWAI as a
34% shareholder is also a major factor making it a muscular
body, as KOIWAI is the pioneer of AM business in Japan.
Started from a sand mold 3D printer in 2007, KOIWAI
embarked to metal 3D in 2012, further, in having been there
in conjuncture of establishment of JAMPT, KOIWAI
dispatches its skilled engineers to JAMPT today.
“
Staircase to Reach New Heights of Success
Noritaka wants JAMPT to be useful as a trustworthy
development partner for customers seeking to develop
practical and mass-producible products utilizing AM
technologies. There are two major things, which are helping
JAMPT to achieve Noritaka’s desired heights and making it
stand ahead in the space it is operating.
First is JAMPT’s relation with Tohoku University. JAMPT
works closely with Tohoku University’s Institute of
Material Research (IMR) to deliver a rigid technical support
system. Being a leading Japanese research institute of
metal, IMR plays a vital role in solving customers’
challenges from an academic standpoint. Moreover, the
university also supports JAMPT’s approach of working on
the functionality of parts with academic backing along with
focusing on parts for manufacturability and costeffectiveness..
Notably, this technical relationship with
Tohoku University has also enabled JAMPT to optimize
manufacturing parameter settings even further and develop
high-quality AM parts.
The second thing that helps JAMPT moving ahead is that
its team utilizes the business network of a leading global
trading company—Sojitz Corporation—to explore the AM
market, following the newest trend of AM, and approaching
to potential clients all over the world. Furthermore, to serve
its clients the best, JAMPT always works with a clientoriented
joint AM parts development mindset. This though
system helps it’s the team to make sure that optimized
design AM parts are not created just out of their mere
imagination, but the idea also fully aligns with the clients’
expectation.
As Japan’s first metal AM service
bureau, JAMPT is equipped with
the latest equipment and full production
3D printing capabilities.
Smart Cars
AI is transforming the automotive industry in every
way imaginable. From enabling material
procurement and predictive maintenance in the
manufacturing process to powering autonomous cars, AI is
at the heart of it all. The automotive business is among the
industries at the vanguard of using AI to mimic, augment,
and support the actions of humans as well as leveraging
the advanced reaction times and pinpoint precision of
machine-based systems. Indeed, today’s semi-autonomous
vehicles and the fully autonomous vehicles of the future
will rely heavily on AI systems.
Although self-driven vehicles might be the most
perceptible beneficiaries of AI and there’s more to this. AI
change is taking place on all fronts, such as consumer
interfaces that identify the preferences of individual
drivers, self-learning analytical systems that warn of
imminent failures, navigation systems that use real-time
data and traffic modeling to shorten travel and ride-hailing
applications that maximize the use of the fleet of a cab
aggregator. Plus, it is bestowing entirely new ways for
people to get around as well as keep them connected, stay
on schedule, and secure the driver while driving.
The Competition is Hard Yet Healthy
Five years ago, autonomous driving has gone from
“maybe possible”—“surely possible”—to “commercially
approved”. Last year, Waymo, the company which
emerged from Google’s self-driving-car project, officially
started its commercial self-driving-car service in the
suburbs of Phoenix. Likewise, According to the 2018
KPMG Autonomous Vehicle Readiness Index (AVRI),
countries like The Netherlands, Singapore, United States,
Sweden, United Kingdom, Germany, etc. are some of the
top prepared countries globally for self-driving vehicles.
Out of which, Netherlands has taken the top spot and is
thus the most prepared country for the introduction of selfdriving
vehicles.
Today, one can imagine a future where carmakers don’t
sell cars, but maintain convoys of self-driving vehicles,
allowing consumers to use ride-on-demand services. The
customer hail a cab controlled by an AI through an AIdriven
fleet management system and once inside, other AI
systems will personalize the route and infotainment
according to customers past preferences. As a customer
begin his ride, the cab will communicate with other
vehicles around to keep the customer safe. Following are
some futuristic developments in autonomous vehicles that
are revolutionizing empowering the utilization of selfdrive
vehicles.
1. Response to Gesture Commands
The case of a broken traffic light could pose a major
28

4
Are
Ways Autonomous Vehicles
Driving Innovation With
ARTIFICIAL
INTELLIGENCE
problem for autonomous vehicles that rely on smooth
roads and clear signals. To overcome the problem of a
missing traffic light, the self-driving car will be utilizing
movement detection system to detect and respond to the
traffic cop’s arm movements as they wave traffic through a
crossroads. The AI in the particular car will be so trained
that it will differentiate between a cop and normal human
beings for precise response to gesture commands.
Moreover, the software of the car will detect a traffic
officer then processes it and waits for the traffic to
continue.
2. Adaptive Cruise Control Technology
To avoid any collision with other vehicles, new technology
is implemented for autonomous vehicles called adaptive
cruise control technology. It is a cruise control system with
automatic distance control (ACC) which uses long-range
radar and laser systems to measure the distance and speed
of other cars in their environment. Besides that, it matches
the speed of the car in front of the driver by using a range
of sensors built into the car which implies that driver
doesn’t need to constantly hit the gas and brake on the
road. Some systems even allow the car to be completely
stopped and then automatically resumed, making a stop
and go traffic significantly less frustrating.
3. 360-degree Camera System
Replacing human sensory input—eyes and image
processing which is done by brain is a mammoth taks to be
accomplished in an autonomous vehicle. Therefore, to
develop a vision sensor as good as the human eye,
artificial intelligence is the prime driver. With a
conventional HD camera system, autonomous vehicles
may not realize how large the vehicle is during parking. So
in this case—if a 360-degree camera setup is combined
with clever computing power on each side of the car, it
will greatly help the computer to access a virtual top-down
view of the driver’s environment.
4. Natural Voice Recognition to Perform Tasks
The AI-based infotainment system installed in an
autonomous vehicle can allow drivers to send and receive
emails, to carry out any internet searches as well as
interrelate with their smartphone apps—by using voice
commands. Along with a powerful natural voice
recognition engine, AI can perform many sophisticated
tasks in seconds. For instance, the passenger can command
the car to change the location without giving manual
inputs on the smartphone. It is just like asking a real
human driver and importantly—the AI won’t argue with
you like human drivers.
29

Smart Cars
The Actual Autonomous Car on the Road—Waymo
As mentioned earlier, Waymo is the commercially
approved vehicle utilizing Google’s self-driving vehicle
exploration. These driverless vehicles have the capability
to deliver people from points A to B safely. The 360-
degree perception technology from Waymo detects
pedestrians, other vehicles, cyclists, road work and other
obstacles up to a distance of 300 yards. Similarly, the inhouse
production system allows Waymo to efficiently
integrate its technology to the hardware. Plus, Waymo
engineers have also formed a program called Carcraft, a
virtual world where Waymo can simulate driving
conditions.
Waymo’s AI software crunches data from the vehicle’s
Lidar, Radar, and high-resolution cameras, GPS, and cloud
services to generate the vehicle’s control signals for
operating it. The Waymo project comprises various types
of cars with the self-driving tools that include the Toyota
Prius, Audi TT, Fiat Chrysler Pacifica, and Lexus RX450h.
Moreover, Waymo has partnered with Intel to use Intel
technologies, such as processors, inside the vehicles. The
most valuable aspect of AI in automotive applications is
that it is constantly learning, and adjusting the rules it uses
to navigate the road. Each vehicle makes the information it
learns available to the rest of the fleet. The result is a
virtual neural network of self-driving vehicles that learn as
they go.
Conclusion
The autonomous vehicle industry is currently drastically
revolutionized by AI and supplementary intelligent
technologies. Therefore, many tech-giants and major
automotive companies have invested heavily in this area.
It’s not only an opportunity for big companies but start-ups
also playing a big role in it. Likewise, these developments
are not just restricted to enabling autonomous vehicles, but
creating optimized development processes for the entire
supply chain. The tight integration between the sensor and
AI systems also has the potential to offer significant value
for the public and enable car manufacturers to gain a
competitive advantage in a quickly evolving market place.
In addition, there will be new opportunities, job vacancies
and academic courses that the autonomous vehicles will
offer to be perfect, errorless, and most
importantly—driverless vehicles.
Utilizing 3D Printing Technology To
Turn Clients’ Imagination Into Reality
The unparalleled advancements in technology
have made tremendous changes in the field of
3D printing, making it more and more common
amidst all kind of businesses. The idea of 3D printing
was coined long ago but most notable changes occurred
during the digital revolution and today the technology
has advanced to the point where it is easy to simply
create a 3D model and send it to the printer instead of
creating a model from scratch manually. This technology
is typically useful when it comes to prototyping and
proof-of concepts such as making models for
forthcoming projects but it also provides great help in
fabricating several small pieces in a short time period.
The products created using 3D printing technology have
proved their significance in various domains such as
healthcare, fashion, automation, construction etc.
Mesmerized by the broad usefulness of 3D printing
technology, a well-versed entrepreneur—Robert
Gagnon changed his field from tourism and started his
own business called, Lezar3D dedicated to 3D printing.
Lezar3D’s Services Powered by 3D printing
Established in 2014 at Montreal, Quebec, Lezar3D uses
the 3D printers to produce models as per specifications
given by clients and brings their ideas into reality. One of
the important elements of the technology is the
techniques and 3D printers work in a unit. The firm uses
other technologies such as thermoforming and moulding
to make up for any shortcomings for 3D printing. The
conjunction tends to offer various options such as using
silicon to get a perfect final product. The entire business
model of Lezar3D is based on this technology as this is
an exceptionally versatile technique in creating
something on its own as well as in eliminating
imperfections of the other method.
Creating High-class Products According to Client
Leader with Great Self-learning Skill
The President of Lezar3D—Robert is always ready to
push his limits and hence his journey from being in the
tourism industry to establish a 3D printing technology
company is an exceptional one. He was self-learning the
technology for expanding tourism but it connected to
him instantly and then there was no hesitation for him
about whether to be in this industry or not. Robert keeps
himself engaged with the field by staying up-to-date with
the new inventions that can be used in conjunction with
3D printing. He dedicates plenty of hours every week for
the business, managing deals with clients and even
polishing the product printed.
Technology Changing Looks of Industries
The 3D printing technology is familiar to most of the
industries and therefore widely used across various
verticals considering its benefits. Still, there are few
industries that are not properly introduced with the
technology but it is expected that with the passing of
time more and more companies will start incorporating
the technology into their regular workflow. The
technology is marking its existence in every possible
field including aeronautics as well as non-commercial
domains such as dentists, orthopaedics, and schools. The
technology with the advancements is becoming more of
a necessity. But, one of the challenging parts in this
business is conveying the customers what exactly is
possible with 3D printing and what is not. Further, it is
important to brief them the restraints and limitations of
the technology to accord with their ideas.
Significance of the 3D Printing Technology
“Personally, when we create something that previously
never existed at all, and we can see it and hold it in real
life with our very own hands, bringing to life something
that would not have been practical or even possible
without 3D printing. That feeling is genuinely aweinspiring
for me. At the same time, I truly appreciate
using this technology in conjunction with others, whether
that means combining it with other materials such as
silicon to perfect the final product, or applying it within
other industries so that the ideas of other people can be
realized in such a way that they would have never
thought of without 3D printing.”— Robert Gagnon
We, at Lezar3D offer
comprehensive 3D printing
services to turn your
concept projects into
real-world objects.
Leadership Challenges
The severity of the
world on the corporates.
What it demands from their leaders?
VUCA: the Origins
VUCA—the term first produced and implemented by
The U.S. Army War College to train their officers in the
response of collapse of the USSR in the early 1990s.
VUCA describes the volatility, uncertainty, complexity,
and ambiguity of the world after the Cold War.
Therefore, it was specifically a lesson learned from the
conditions arose due to the Cold War between the US
and USSR.
VUCA, which was once a military training term has
become trendy managerial acronym today. But what
made corporates to follow this acronym? One of the
reason is the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2008—a
once-in–a-century financial crash. Nearly a decade later
we are still dealing with its fallout, and thinking of
another, even larger, debt-caused crisis. Presently, VUCA
is best acronym that encapsulates the impact of such
thunderstorms which are just begun to unleash upon the
globe.
VUCA: Actual world scenario
Therefore, VUCA designates unpredictable events in the
world, whether in case of a country like Afghanistan or
the case of an organization like Nokia. Afghanistan was
once known as a fast developing country with a healthy
economy. Similarly, Nokia was a leader in phone
manufacturing and was selling the most number of
phones across the world. In both cases, these two
elements have suffered a drastic fall from prosperity to a
great depreciation in their value.
These downfalls are the recent examples of
ineffectiveness in tackling rapid changes in defense and
in technological world respectively. Thus, neither
countries nor organizations and their leadership
strategies are spared in the today’s fluctuating world. Just
turning on 5 min news can show you the live volatility
and uncertainty in the world. One can see the end of
relative stability in the business, politics, or science
which ultimately forcing humans to be more dynamic,
aggressive, and prepared for upcoming disasters. This
proves that the present world is unlike anything people
have ever seen.
VUCA: Leaders and their strategies—Now and then
The leaders in every business, public administration,
education, science, culture, entertainment etc. are dealing
with VUCA atmosphere on a daily basis. They form
various strategies according to their industry or locality.
However, ill-prepared plans worsen the existing
situation. Similarly, leaders who started in stable times
find it difficult to match with the present highly turbulent
digital age.
This is because, most of the old heroes are comfortable
with a gradual changes and stick to industry boundaries.
Rather than launching working on breakthrough
advancements, they prefer analyzing rivals’ strategies
and scaling end-products slightly more efficient than the
previous ones. This standard planning system is radically
affected by the current global market and most of the
leading companies have failed to match the speed of the
market. Remember Kodak? —the pioneer in
cameras—now struggling with keeping its name in the
industry.
VUCA: the Fighting Species
The question is who are suitable for thriving in the
VUCA world? And the answer is—there are too many
elements that are beyond the control but those who are
flexible as well as open to change and dare for new
experience can hope for a success. This can be referred
as acrobatic learning, investing continual efforts day and
night to achieve anything more than competitors, moving
forward to new ideas and preparing to fight in the
tomorrow’s world.
About twenty years ago, no one would have believed
that space rockets would be recycled, sent and received
safely like an email. This unthinkable milestone is
achieved by a private spaceflight company, SpaceX. One
rocket with minimal mileage, moderate lift capacity, can
used for delivery of goods to Earth-orbit, and 100%
success rate in flying back to earth!
39

Leadership Challenges
VUCA: Benefits of Learning Agility
The evolutionary example of SpaceX clearly states the
need of the present uncertain world. Leaders don’t need
to work towards making detailed plans but testing
various hypotheses about emerging technologies and
quickly recognizing ways to get things accomplished.
However, the higher leaders go—the more volatile
uncertain, complex and ambiguous the job becomes and
it challenges them to create their own way.
Dr. W. Burke, Thorndike Professor of Psychology at
Teachers College, Columbia University, has been able to
measure learning agility based on 4 years of initial
research. He determined that people who are more
learning agile demonstrate that agility in 9 different
ways—Flexibility, Speed, Experimenting, Performance
Risk Taking, Interpersonal Risk Taking, Collaborating,
Information Gathering, Feedback Seeking, and
Reflecting. According to the test consisting 38 questions,
the research finds the learning agility in a leader. A leader
with higher learning agility tends to have a successful
future.
This is because agility comes from the
motivation to think out of the box, try
new things and learn with them.
Additionally, probing deeply into
views and asking counter
questions on them can clear
the clouds in a strategy and
helps to focus on consistent
application of effective
decision making.
VUCA: Disruptive
strategies—Matching the change
Old and successful companies had a humble
beginning. However, they matched with the
changing wave. The wave that demands
more—different and useful or simple, reliable, and
productive—anything, which very few can predict,
very few can dream of—but one can strive towards
Volatility
Uncertainty
Complexity
Ambiguity
becoming those very few people with disruptive
strategies.
Initially, walked as an online bookseller to a flying
retailer of nearly every product, Amazon has recently
achieved a trillion dollar valuation with its disruptive
strategies.
Similarly, the leading payment service provider,
MasterCard jumped to a different path than its rivals. It
approached remote countries which were ignored by
other payment giants. MasterCard found out the need for
mobile payment options and excelled in that arena with
solutions, bringing easy-to-use mobile payment features.
VUCA: the Breakthrough innovation approach
In the case of startups, most of them are born out of an
idea which identifies a need that other, more established
organizations have ignored. But to consume work ahead
with the VUCA change, startup leaders must produce
game-changing, innovative products and services that
can fundamentally change the way people live or
work. This is helpful in making a distinct and
unique business that can beat its
competition with its end products.
In conclusion, VUCA environment
calls for different kinds of
leaders who are highly
focused on existing
solutions or the ones with
the ability to turn vision
into reality, catching the fast
pace tech realm. One can say
VUCA typically require a fusion
form of leaders and machines who can
work continually, creating innovative
offerings and streamline business process to
keep running with the change. Similarly, to
fortify the efforts, a brief understanding of VUCA
can always give a reminder of the external
environment to change the game with groundbreaking
products, strategies, models, and self-built
capabilities.
