JAKE MCLELLAN has lived
in Addington, Phillipstown,
Linwood and the central city – he
knows the area like the back of
his hand.
That’s why the Linwood-
Central-Heathcote Community
Board deputy chairman and
Labour Party outreach support
worker has been named to stand
against Deon Swiggs in the local
body elections for The People’s
Choice.
Mr McLellan moved to Christchurch
from Invercargill when he
was 10.
“I’ve essentially lived in innercity
Christchurch for most of my
life,” he said.
Now at 27, he wants to help
tackle some of the area’s biggest
issues from the council table, including
the city’s public transport,
the living wage and revitalising
the Linwood Village area.
“The council’s been very, very
slow in terms of how to deal with
that area.”
He said alcohol ban was not
working and more needed to be
done to address ongoing social
issues.
But Mr McLellan knows he
has a tough opponent in Cr
Swiggs – who was elected to the
city council in 2016, beating The
People’s Choice candidate Vicki
Jake McLellan
Tahau-Paton 1400 votes to 1051.
It was the first time the seat
could be contested.
“It’s going to be an interesting
one,” Mr McLellan said. “I’m
excited.”
Cr Swiggs said he was “looking
forward” to the election campaign.
“This is democracy and anyone
can stand. I’m looking forward to
good, robust debate about community
issues.”
It is a tricky ward as there was
a high number of transient residents,
he said.
“I’ve worked my backside off
for three years . . . I want to keep
going on the projects I’ve been
working on.”
That included an alcohol ban
Deon Swiggs
for Linwood Village and the
area’s overall revitalisation, work
on the central city action plan,
addressing traffic issues along
Manchester St, regenerating the
Richmond area and working to
address residents’ concerns about
short term accommodation like
AirBnB.
VICKI BUCK is one of the city’s
most well known and longest
standing politicians.
But that is not stopping
23-year-old financial adviser
and Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board member
Catherine Chu from taking on
the former mayor for the city
council’s Riccarton Ward seat.
Ms Chu has lived in the
Riccarton Ward her whole life
and will run in the October 12
local body elections under the
centre-right Independent Citizens
banner.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed
my work on the community
board and my strong involvement
with the diverse communities
in our ward. Over the past six
months I have been approached
by many local residents
encouraging me to stand for
council,” she said.
“It is clear Riccarton residents
want change. I offer a fresh
perspective and will work hard to
represent local views at council,
it’s time council listened.”
Cr Buck was first elected to the
city council in 1975 when she was
19 and became the first female
mayor in 1989.
In the 2016 election, she ran
unopposed. But she welcomes Ms
Chu’s bid.
“That’s the nature of local
government,” she said.
