news online at www.star.kiwi Have your wheelie bins got their tags? CHECK YOUR wheelie bins have been electronically tagged because those without will soon stop being emptied. For the past three years Waste Management Ltd has been carrying out a stocktake of wheelie bins for the city council. As part of the stocktake, they have been fitting the wheelie bins allocated to each property with a radio frequency identification tag that emits a short range signal. The signal can be picked up by the kerbside collection trucks and used to identify if a bin is on a property where it does not belong. The RFID tags will help identify lost or stolen bins and reduce the cost of the kerbside collection by ensuring only bins that people are entitled to, and have paid for, are being emptied. “We are nearing the end of the stocktake, which means that most wheelie bins should have been tagged by now. You can tell if your bin has been tagged because it will have a small reflective sticker on the side,’’ city council solid waste manager Ross Trotter said. •Mayor’s column, p25 Lost in Bottle Lake Forest Calls for more signage • By Matt Slaughter BOTTLE LAKE Forest Park is a haven for walkers, runners and cyclists. But, it’s not all fun and games. A lack of signage at the forest is causing people to get lost and has resulted in police call-outs. The city council says there is enough signage already and people who get lost will eventually be found. Glenn Livingstone Tim Baker “While there is the occasional lost park user, the forest’s popularity is such that it is only a temporary issue until someone comes along,” city council staff told the Coastal-Burwood Community Board, which has asked for more and better signage. The community board was also told: “Bottle Lake Forest Park has sign panels at every major entranceway, as well as sign panels placed in strategic locations throughout the forest; eight in total. Maps of the forest are available freely from the information centre and Spencer Park, as well as being available for download off the web.” But Burwood Ward city councillor Glenn Livingstone and board member Tim Baker said this was not good enough. Said Cr Livingstone: “I’ve been there when police have turned up looking for someone and they are there quite regularly, so with better signage, it could help reduce police call-out time to Bottle Lake.” Police search and rescue co-ordinator Sergeant Phil Simmonds told The Star on average there are between five and 10 call-outs a year for people who get lost in Bottle Lake Forest Park. They include young children separated from their families and lost walkers. “People are usually located quite quickly due to the size of the park and also the fact there is good cellphone coverage YOU ARE WHERE? The lack of signage at Bottle Lake Forest Park has resulted in people getting lost and police call-outs. in most of the forest. Police encourage people heading out into the forest to take note of the available maps and track names, and always go prepared,” he said. Mr Baker said the signage currently in place is too vague and there is not enough. He has been lost in the park on his bike before. “I for one have got lost in there when it’s starting to get dark and it wasn’t a nice feeling.” Mr Baker said more small signs, saying things like “Bottle Lake Car Park 1km” are necessary. The community board has asked city council staff to discuss the cost and logistics of installing more signage with it. The Star Thursday June 6 2019 NEWS 3 in brief Fire near airport not suspicious A fire at a quarry shed near Christchurch Airport yesterday morning is no longer being treated as suspicious. Fire and Emergency New Zealand fire investigator Jason Hobbs confirmed the cause of the fire was accidental and there is no evidence it was deliberately lit. Four crews fought the blaze at the Frews Contracting quarry on Savills Rd, near Pound Rd, at 4.40am. Mother-of-two dies in car crash Tai Tarulata Dixon, 41, a Selwyn mother-of-two and midwife, was killed in a crash on her way to work on Sunday. Emergency services were called to the crash at the intersection of Sandy Knolls and West Coast Rds, West Melton, about 9.50pm. The serious crash unit is investigating. Chaneys Rd on-ramp closed from today The Chaneys Rd on-ramp will be closed from today for the next four months. The New Zealand Transport Agency is widening the road under Chaneys bridge as part of the Northern Corridor project. The on-ramp will be reopened from early October until mid-2020, when the Northern Corridor is expected to be complete. Crashes lead to plan to drop speed limits More than 250 crashes in Marshland, Spencerville and Kainga over the last six years have led to a proposal to drop speed limits. Public feedback has opened on a plan to lower a number of 80km/h and 70km/h areas to 60km/h around Marshland/Main North Rds from south of QE II Drive to north of the Waimakariri Bridge, Spencerville Rd and Kainga Rd, and west of Marshland Rd. It comes as longterm road safety data from the New Zealand Transport Agency suggests speed limits across New Zealand are too high.
