MOUNT ASPIRING COLLEGE HAKA
The Haka is a type of ancient Māori war dance traditionally used on the battlefield, as well as
when groups came together in peace. Haka are a fierce display of a tribe’s pride, strength and
unity. Actions include violent foot-stamping, tongue protrusions and rhythmic body slapping to
accompany a loud chant.
Everyone is to cycle on the left side of the road in single file. Do not bike on the footpath, always
give way and stop for people walking. Do you know the NZ road rules? Please read the Road
Code – there is a copy in the school library. If you bike at night you need a light on the front and
the back.
During the school day you can leave your bike in one of the bike stands near the ILC.
WHANAU SYSTEM
Whanau System
The Whanau system combines about 15 students from the same House into mixed age groups
for managing absences, giving information and developing individuals in non curricular areas.
Students stay in the same Whanau, with the same teacher, for their time at school.
Overview: The Whanau teacher is the person who has responsibility for the welfare and development
of the individuals within their Whanau. Their primary goal is to get to know their Whanau members
really well – to show an appreciation of each of them as a person within their family, school and
community, and to help them to be a positive, contributing member of our school.
Whanau teachers should be the students’ ‘parent’, ‘mentor’ and ‘interested adult’ at school.
On the following page is the list of Whanau teachers and venues - correct at time of press.
OUTDOOR PURSUITS
Mount Aspiring College is well known for its Outdoor Pursuits courses, which have been an
integral part of the character of Mount Aspiring College for over 25 years.
We are fortunate to have easy access to some amazing outdoor venues, enabling us to offer
challenging and varied outdoor experiences on our courses.
OP courses are on offer at Level 1, 2 and 3. Each course uses a range of activities, and there is
a progression of skills from one level to the next.
New students generally get places in Level 1 (year 11) or Level 2 (year 12/13) Outdoor Pursuits.
Snowsports Programme
In Term 3 most of the practical sessions involve going skiing or snowboarding.
• You need to have a seasons pass (this is arranged by the ILC and will be given to you at
Orientation). If you forget your pass, you may be charged for a replacement.
• You need your own equipment, or to have arranged rentals (Season rental is available
through Rocket Rentals for $259 for season).
• You MUST have a suitable snowsports helmet (you will need to purchase this in town if you
do not already have your own).
• You are in a lesson for 2 hours. This is compulsory.
• There is roster for DUTY (for securing roofbox loads and cleaning vans). You can expect to
do duty at least twice over the season.
Logistics for a Snowsports day:
• Bring your equipment to the OP shed in the morning (before school is best, but NO LATER
than the end of interval) and load your skis / board straight onto the roofbox of the correct
van. Ski poles can go in the boot of the ski van.
• Leave your boots, helmets, and other personal effects inside the OP shed on beside the kayaks.
• Tick your name off on the attendance register below the whiteboard.
• Go to class. (We recommend getting changed into ski clothing at interval).
• At the end of Period 3, come directly to the OP shed, collect your belongings and find a seat
in the van. Do not be late please.
• On arrival at the skifield, put boots on at the van, and leave spare clothing inside van.
• Proceed directly to the ski school meeting point. Your lesson will begin as soon as your
instructors arrive.
• Return to the vans ON TIME. The OP staff will tell everyone what the departure time is each day.
• Return to MAC, and Duty teams clean vans. All others free to go home.
Questions
1. What if I forget my helmet (or other equipment)? We can arrange a rental for you, but you will
have to pay (later) for it.
2. Do I have to go to the lesson? Yes
3. If I miss a session can I go with another class on a different day?
Sorry, we cannot do that.
If you do not understand anything PLEASE ask
YOUR HOMESTAY
Your homestay parents will discuss with you their expectations (rules). Please be sure you
understand what they are. It may help to write it down or note it on your phone. Keep a little
notebook with your host parents’ details in them and the school’s. Keep it in your bag, wallet or on
your phone Keep a note of the telephone numbers and the house rules e.g. time for dinner, etc.
Tips for a happy home with your host family
• In New Zealand teenagers do many things to help with the smooth running of the house, you
will be expected to be part of this. It is up to the international students to adapt to the lifestyle
that already exists in the home, not the other way around! Often both homestay parents
work, so you will be expected to fit around these commitments as do the other members of
the family.
• Discuss rules, household chores, curfew etc with your host parent/s during the first week. It’s
best to know what is expected right from the start.
• Inform your host family of any plans you make and get their ap- proval before finalising them.
They will want to know if you intend to miss dinner, need a ride, or would like to invite a friend
over to the house. Families do not like surprises about things like this. Be on Time! Try not to
be late for meals, appointments and coming home in the evening. If you cannot avoid being
late, please call or txt your host parent/s. Do your best to fit in with the family’s normal schedule
MAC ILC Orientation Handbook
Enjoy Success!
• Offer to cook a meal once in a while, perhaps a specialty from your homeland. An extra
pair of hands helping out in the kitchen is always appreciated especially washing dishes or
clearing the table after a meal.
• If you have younger children in your host family, do something fun with them. Take them
to the park, play a game or babysit them one evening to give your homestay family a night
out. The children will love the special attention from their ‘new ‘brother or sister.
• Don’t borrow money from your host parents. If you have a severe problem with money
please call your Homestay Coordinator or the ILC office. If you do not have an arrangement
with your natural parents for emergencies, call them and make one! If you are forced to
borrow, please repay the loan as quickly as possible.
• If you have a problem discuss this with your host family rather than phoning your natural
parents. It is best to solve problems where they are happening first as calling your natural
parents can cause them unnecessary worry. Please know that the team at the ILC office
team are available to help you along with the school counsellor.
• Expect to pay for your personal expenses. Your host family is not responsible for buying
your shampoo, toothpaste, extra snack food or clothes. They may choose to buy these
things for you if they wish. Nor are they responsible for your entertainment expenses
• Please do not expect your host family to host your visitors, although some will offer to do
this. Your host family agreed to host you – please don’t expect them to be hotel if any of
your members of your family or friends should visit Wanaka. Always ask permission to
have someone visit whether it be a school friend or family.
• When taking a shower or bath please only take five minutes. If you take longer there will
not be enough hot water for all your family to have a hot shower and it will be expensive
for your host family.
EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Studying in New Zealand is about enjoying living in New Zealand as well. To meet people and have a
balanced life you need to get involved in some extra curricular activities. There are many clubs in the
community that you can join. Ask the ILC staff if you have an interest. There is a Sports Hub where
you will find out about what’s on. Most activities are read out in the morning notices during Whanau,
so listen carefully when they are read. Ask your Whanau Teacher if you are not sure.
INSURANCE
Invoices/receipts/claim forms – what does it all mean?
Insurance is something that protects you in case you get hurt or become sick while you are in
New Zealand.
If you do end up needing medical attention – your insurance company will pay back the costs of
your visit to the doctor (or hospital)!!
In order to get this money back, firstly you have to pay the Doctor or whoever is providing you with
the medical care you need and at the time, you should ask for a copy of the invoice (which details
what you are paying for) and a receipt (which confirms you have paid). The next step is to bring
those two documents to the ILC office and to fill in an insurance claim form.
The ILC staff will then copy everything and send it off to the insurance company. If you have a
New Zealand bank account they will put the money into that, otherwise they can pay the school
and we will tell you when the money arrives. The insurance company usually pays out the claims
within two weeks.
See examples of these documents for your information.
