The bookworms, the books and the memories
Then... In December, 2003, we gathered at Jaki Harrison’s home for a
Christmas lunch. Left to right: Gerry Rubino, Carol Trischuk, Jacquie
Schaus, Dawn Mayhew, Jaki Harrison, Mary Dummett, Chris McGuire,
Betty Howard, Sheila Hurren, Marjory Nasmith, Marg Barrie.
and now... In December, 2018, we gathered for lunch at Clyde Hall in
Lanark. Back row: Chris McGuire, Muriel Turner, Jean Whieldon, Margie
Brady, Carol Trischuk. Front row: Sheila Hurren, Pat Jones, Karen Hunt,
Betty Howard, Marjory Nasmith.
The people...
The Perth Bookworms
In the summer of 2000, Chris McGuire invited the remnants of a
raveling book club, plus enough friends to make up a new
contingent of readers to Huntington Green. From that discussion,
the Bookworms were born. The ground rules were simple, one
meeting and one book a month for 10 months (July and August
were holidays!) and that suggested 10 members in order to meet at
a different home each month. The last ‘rule’ has been bent and
stretched from time to time as potential new members tried us out,
which explains why some of the photos included here contain
eleven people. Two further social traditions were adopted in the
early years: a Christmas lunch at somewhere pleasant, Lanark’s
Clyde Hall being our favourite whenever it is available, and a pot
luck lunch at the June meeting to celebrate summer and a new list
of books to look forward to when we meet again in September.
No one took photos at that first meeting, but the original
Bookworms were Chris, of course, Marg Barrie, Erma Calkins,
Mary Dummett, Jaki Harrison, Betty Howard, Sheila Hurren,
Marjory Nasmith, Gerry Rubino and Carol Trischuk.
Over the 20 years we have been together, there have been
relatively few changes. Five of the originals are still around. But
people move and, sadly people die. As gaps appeared, we have
happily welcomed new friends to fill them with their tastes, insights
and opinions.
Those joining us for brief or longer stints have included Loretta
Brooks , Dawn Mayhew and Jacquie Schaus, and the five current
members who along with the ‘old timers’ make up today’s
Bookworms, Margie Brady, Karen Hunt, Pat Jones, Muriel Turner
and Jean Whieldon. We are all shown together at the bottom of
the facing page.
