y <strong>the</strong> Jews, and a great many <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves, and so perished, till five<br />

thousand were fallen down dead in <strong>the</strong>ir flight, while <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> multitude<br />

prevented <strong>the</strong>ir immediate death, <strong>by</strong> crowding in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> fortification. <strong>Herod</strong><br />

encompassed <strong>the</strong>se around, and besieged <strong>the</strong>m; and while <strong>the</strong>y were ready <strong>to</strong><br />

be taken <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir enemies in arms, <strong>the</strong>y had ano<strong>the</strong>r additional distress upon<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, which was thirst and want <strong>of</strong> water; for <strong>the</strong> king was above hearkening<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir ambassadors; and when <strong>the</strong>y <strong>of</strong>fered five hundred talents, as <strong>the</strong> price<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir redemption, he pressed still harder upon <strong>the</strong>m. And as <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

burnt up <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir thirst, <strong>the</strong>y came out and voluntarily delivered <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

up <strong>by</strong> multitudes <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jews, till in five days' time four thousand <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m<br />

were put in<strong>to</strong> bonds; and on <strong>the</strong> sixth day <strong>the</strong> multitude that were left<br />

despaired <strong>of</strong> saving <strong>the</strong>mselves, and came out <strong>to</strong> fight: with <strong>the</strong>se <strong>Herod</strong><br />

fought, and slew again about seven thousand, insomuch that he punished<br />

Arabia so severely, and so far extinguished <strong>the</strong> spirits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> men, that he was<br />

chosen <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> nation for <strong>the</strong>ir ruler.<br />

Footnotes:<br />

1. This seventh year <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reign <strong>of</strong> <strong>Herod</strong> [from <strong>the</strong> conquest or death <strong>of</strong><br />

Antigonus], with <strong>the</strong> great earthquake in <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same<br />

spring, which are here fully implied <strong>to</strong> be not much before <strong>the</strong> fight at<br />

Actium, between Octavius and An<strong>to</strong>ny, and which is known from <strong>the</strong><br />

Roman his<strong>to</strong>rians <strong>to</strong> have been in <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> September, in <strong>the</strong><br />

thirty-first year before <strong>the</strong> Christian era, determines <strong>the</strong> chronology <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Josephus</strong> as <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> reign <strong>of</strong> <strong>Herod</strong>, viz. that he began in <strong>the</strong> year 37,<br />

beyond rational contradiction. Nor is it quite unworthy <strong>of</strong> our notice,<br />

that this seventh year <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reign <strong>of</strong> <strong>Herod</strong>, or <strong>the</strong> thirty-first before <strong>the</strong><br />

Christian era, contained <strong>the</strong> latter part <strong>of</strong> a Sabbatic year, on which<br />

Sabbatic year, <strong>the</strong>refore, it is plain this great earthquake happened in<br />

Judea.<br />

2. This speech <strong>of</strong> <strong>Herod</strong> is set down twice <strong>by</strong> <strong>Josephus</strong>, here and Antiq. B.<br />

XV. ch. 5. sect. 3, <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> very same purpose, but <strong>by</strong> no means in <strong>the</strong><br />
