Time for Joy, Jubilation and Journey
HARI RAYA IS THE DAY OF CELEBRATION FOR MUSLIMS. THERE ARE 2 SIGNIFICANT HARI
RAYA FESTIVALS IN A YEAR. THE FIRST, HARI RAYA AIDILFITRI OR HARI RAYA PUASA, IS A
CELEBRATION AFTER THE HOLY MONTH OF FASTING. THE SECOND, HARI RAYA HAJI OR HARI
RAYA AIDILADHA, FALLS ABOUT 2 MONTHS LATER. KNOWN AS THE FESTIVAL OF SACRIFICE,
THERE ARE SACRIFICES OF ANIMALS WHOSE MEAT IS DELIVERED TO POORER PEOPLE.

Similar to Muslims worldwide, Malaysians
celebrate Hari Raya in full force. Among
the activities are visiting relatives,
cleaning ancestors’ tombs, and handing
out sweets to children and neighbours.
It is a real festival of joy and jubilation.

KUALA LUMPUR
The capital of Malaysia is modernised
with high-rise buildings and department
stores such as the luxurious Pavilion
Kuala Lumpur, Suria KLCC in Petronas
Twin Towers and 1Utama, the world’s 4 th
largest shopping centre.
The metropolis is also rich with
historical attractions including the
Merdeka Square, Kuala Lumpur railway
station and Istana Negara or the old
palace of Malaysia’s monarch.
Putrajaya, a city built in 1999 covering
nearly 50 sq km, is remarkable for its
modern architecture, a vast man-made
lake and 5 spectacular bridges. The
Putra Mosque, made of pink granite,
accommodates 15,000 people. It is
crowded with Muslim worshippers during
Hari Raya.
PENANG
One of the 13 states of Malaysia,
Penang is proud of its charming capital
George Town which is distinguished for its
Sino-Portuguese architecture. UNESCOlisted
George Town is the magnet that
draws travellers and earns the reputation
of a street art city. Penang also boasts
interesting historical sites including the
century-old City Hall and Town Hall, Fort
Cornwallis and Kapitan Keling Mosque
which is lively during the Hari Raya
celebration.

Penang Hill which offers a
panoramic view of the town and the
sea is a favourite mountaintop. It is
accessible by trams or cable cars.
MALACCA
The state of Malacca with the
capital of the same name had been a
flourishing trading post. The city’s
architecture is unique with a combination
of Portuguese, Dutch and British styles.
Malacca was listed by UNESCO as a
World Heritage Site in 2008.
A visit to Malacca is like a journey
