Netradyne, a provider of artificial intelligence

Traditionally, vision-safety systems within commercial

The further context protects drivers who may
have been rear-ended or side swiped, which until
now, would only be a speculative case for certain

manager and providing increased litigation mitigation,
the addition of VisionPRO takes it a step further.

maintenance system, Fleet Center,

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s
(CVSA) International Roadcheck will take
place June 4-6.
Over that 72-hour period, commercial motor
vehicle inspectors in jurisdictions throughout
North America will conduct inspections on
commercial motor vehicles and drivers.
Each year, International Roadcheck places
special emphasis on a category of violations.
This year’s focus is steering and suspension
systems. While checking vehicle compliance
is always part of the North American Standard
Inspection Program, CVSA is highlighting
steering components and suspension systems
this year as a reminder of their importance to
highway safety.
“Steering and suspension are safety critical
systems for any commercial motor vehicle,”
said CVSA President Chief Jay Thompson with
the Arkansas Highway Police. “Not only do they
support the heavy loads carried by trucks and
buses, but they also help maintain stability and
control under acceleration and braking, keeping
the vehicle safely on the road. Furthermore,
they keep tires in alignment, reducing chances
of uneven tire wear and possible tire failure, and
they maximize the contact between the tires and

the road to provide steering stability and good
handling.”
During International Roadcheck, CVSAcertified
inspectors will primarily conduct the
North American Standard Level I Inspection, a
37-step procedure that includes an examination
of driver operating requirements and vehicle
mechanical fitness. Inspectors may opt to
conduct the Level II Walk-Around Driver/
Vehicle Inspection, Level III Driver/Credential/
Administrative Inspection or Level V Vehicle-
Only Inspection.
The vehicle inspection includes checking
critical inspection items such as: brake systems;
cargo securement; coupling devices; driveline/
driveshaft; driver’s seat (missing); exhaust
systems; frames; fuel systems; lighting devices
(headlamps, tail lamps, stop lamps, turn
signals and lamps/flags on projecting loads);
steering mechanisms; suspensions; tires; van
and open-top trailer bodies; wheels, rims and
hubs; windshield wipers. Additional items on
buses, motorcoaches, passenger vans or other
passenger-carrying vehicles include emergency
exits, electrical cables and systems in engine and
battery compartments, and seating (temporary
and aisle seats).
Drivers will be required to provide their
driver’s license (operating credentials), Medical
Examiner’s Certificate and Skill Performance
Evaluation Certificate (if applicable), driver’s
record of duty status and vehicle inspection
report(s) (if applicable). Inspectors will also
check drivers for seat belt usage, sickness,
fatigue and apparent alcohol and/or drug
impairment.

violations are found during a Level I or Level V

Inspection, a CVSA decal will be applied to the
vehicle, indicating that the vehicle successfully
passed a decal-eligible inspection conducted by
a CVSA-certified inspector; however, when a
rear impact guard is required and violations are
present, a CVSA decal shall not be issued.
If an inspector does identify critical vehicle
inspection item violations, he or she may
render the vehicle out of service if the condition
meets the North American Standard Out-of-
Service Criteria. This means the vehicle cannot
be operated until the vehicle violation(s)
are corrected. A driver can also be placed
out of service for driver credential-related
issues or driver conditions, such as fatigue or
impairment.
Out-of-service orders and the number,
type and severity of safety violations affect
a motor carrier’s Compliance, Safety,
Accountability (CSA) score and its Safety
Fitness Determination rating. CSA is the safety
compliance and enforcement program of the
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
designed to improve safety and prevent
commercial motor vehicle crashes, injuries and
fatalities by holding motor carriers and drivers
accountable for their role in safety.
“International Roadcheck is a high-visibility,
three-day commercial motor vehicle and
driver inspection and enforcement event,” said
Chief Thompson. “However, aside from the
increased inspections, we are not doing anything
differently than any other day. The inspections
performed during International Roadcheck are
the same inspections that are conducted the day
before International Roadcheck starts and the
day after it concludes, as well as any other day
of the year.”
“It’s important to remember that inspections
are conducted 365 days a year. We publicly
announce the dates of this three-day enforcement
and awareness initiative in advance because we
want all vehicles on our roadways to be safe and
compliant,” Thompson said.
International Roadcheck is the largest targeted
enforcement program on commercial motor
vehicles in the world, with around 17 trucks and
buses inspected, on average, every minute in
Canada, the United States and Mexico during
a 72-hour period. Since its inception in 1988,
more than 1.6 million roadside inspections have
been conducted during International Roadcheck
campaigns.
International Roadcheck is a CVSA program
with participation by FMCSA, Canadian
Council of Motor Transport Administrators,
Transport Canada and Secretaría de
Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT) (Ministry
of Communications and Transportation) of
Mexico.

quick, easy updates, more uptime
Volvo Trucks’ new Parameter Plus Package
allows for up to 50 parameter updates annually
per covered vehicle, providing significant value
to customers’ bottom lines through maximized
uptime, the company said in a news release.
“The Parameter Plus Package is a notable
example of Volvo Trucks’ emphasis on
delivering connectivity solutions dedicated
to maximizing uptime for customers,” said
Ashraf Makki, product marketing manager at
Volvo Trucks North America. “Providing the
opportunity to complete numerous parameter
updates remotely per year is fundamental for
certain customers to ensure their fleets reach
peak performance and uptime potential.”
Makki said the pace of change in the
transportation industry is more rapid than ever
and customers are demanding faster ways of
communication through connectivity.

Programming, the new Parameter Plus
Package was designed with thorough feedback
from customers to meet the demands of their
applications via over-the-air (OTA) updates
while significantly increasing uptime and
maintaining a firm cost control. Previously
parameter and software updates, where the
trucks needed to be brought to the service
point, could in all require two or more days
of downtime, along with the added work and
costs of acquiring a supplementary truck and
managing driver logistics. The new Parameter
Plus Package with OTA powertrain software,
updates can be completed in under 20 minutes
and parameter updates in under 10 minutes,
Makki said.
There are nearly 122,000 Volvo trucks with
embedded connectivity technologies on the road
today. Just a year ago, approximately 1,300
Volvo trucks were receiving OTA software and
parameter updates; today, nearly 16,000 Volvo
trucks have OTA update capabilities and the
population is growing rapidly.
Leveraging Volvo’s factory-built embedded
telematics platform and connecting to the Volvo
Uptime Center, these updates can take place
during a short meal, an operational break or
while dispatching a truck virtually anywhere a
cellular connection is available. The embedded
telematics platform also supports Volvo’s latest
Remote Diagnostics, which coupled with SAS’
analytics platform, helps reduce diagnostic time
by 70 percent and repair time by 25 percent.
This system delivers more precise data allowing
Volvo Action Service agents to proactively
analyze trouble codes and deliver actionable
information to decisionmakers and repair
facilities, maximized vehicle uptime.
Parameter updates enable owners to switch
between operating modes for a multitude of
optimizations, including maximizing truck
performance, balancing fuel usage and
performance, maximizing fuel efficiency and
configuring maximum road speeds. If fuel prices
rise, a fleet may decide to change its trucks’
top speed settings. A fleet may also choose
to switch programming on a transmission or
engine to accommodate application changes,
such as switching from dry bulk to liquid
tankers or running multiple routes with different
topographies.
The multitude of parameter update options are
helpful for companies with trucks that operate
between areas governed by different regulations.
For instance, trucks traveling between Ontario,
Canada, and the United States may require Road
Speed Limit parameter changes in order to be
legally compliant in Canada, while benefiting
from higher speeds permitted in the U.S.

Intelligent Imaging Systems technology used
to find CMV parking at truck stops in Midwest
Intelligent Imaging Systems (IIS)
is now providing state departments
of transportation with its IIS Smart
Parking solutions for trucks at rest
stops.
Installations were recently completed
in Ohio as part of the Mid America
Association of State Transportation
Officials (MAASTO) initiative, which
unites eight Midwestern states in the
nation’s first Regional Truck Parking
Information Management System
(TPIMS).
Through IIS Smart Parking, 18 rest
stops along Ohio’s Interstates 70, 75
and U.S. Route 33 were fitted with inground
sensors, which provide information
on how many parking spots are
open and available for use. That information
is then relayed and broadcast

of parking spaces at the upcoming rest
stop.
The IIS Smart Parking locations join
others implemented through MAASTO to
provide truckers with parking availability.
The TPIMS was deployed along the
region’s high-volume freight corridors
through Indiana, Iowa, Kansas,
Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio
and Wisconsin. Its goal is to have all
truck drivers, dispatchers and others
see and benefit from a cohesive parking
availability system that crosses
state borders. In addition to dynamic
highway message signs, websites will
provide information on parking space
availability.
“This service is badly needed in the
trucking industry,” said Brian Heath,
president and CEO of IIS. “Parking is a
huge concern for drivers. Studies by the
Federal Highway Administration show
that 83 percent of drivers routinely take
30 minutes or longer to find parking
and that 37 DOTs reported problems
with commercial parking.”
According to Heath, the real-time display
of parking spots at rest areas gives
drivers time to plan. “In Ohio, it’s set up
where a highway reader board shows the
number of spots available at the upcoming
rest area,” he said. “And in many
cases, it shows the spots available at the
rest areas that are further down the road.
This takes out a lot of the guesswork of
‘where do I park?’ Plus, if a rest area is
full, the driver doesn’t have to pull in
and search – wasting time trying to find
a spot that doesn’t exist.”

parking issues to take advantage of the
funding to make highways safer, and
drivers more productive. If a driver
can’t find a spot, and their hours of service
are about to expire, they’ll often
resort to using unauthorized parking
spaces, or park on highway shoulders
or ramps. By providing real-time information
on parking spots, states have
the ability to make an impact on the
