Note From The Editors
Owning a horse means having a lot
of responsibility, and we would know.
From cleaning their stalls to
grooming their fur, it’s like a roller
coaster of challenges. You always
have to make sure your horse is
treated well, and that you still make
way for the fun things. Horses have
different points of views as explained
pages 14-17. They see the world in a
different ways than we do, which
makes things more of a journey. We
are always enjoying our time with our
horses, no matter what we may be
doing. It’s the feeling of freedom
when riding a horse, and happy
sensation when you are next to
them, that really makes it magical.
Even with the cost of feeding, and
cleaning up after your horse, it is still
worth the time. If there is one thing
we have learned from owning
horses, it’s that even though it is a
challenge, it is also a whole new
adventure.
I
magine. Today is your
first day of horseback
riding, you’re nervous but
excited. When you walk in,
everything is friendly,
smells like animals, and
then you see a woman
petting a horse. That's
when you realize that
that kind woman will be
your new instructor. She
will teach you everything
you know about loving
and taking care of her
horses. Here goes a long
addition to horses for
you.
The Start of a
Dream
Opening a loving barn
has always been Sue
Edelburgers dream. That
dream came true about a
year ago. She has always had
a passion for horses, and
then soon enough, it was one
of her many careers. In an
interview with Sue herself, she
said “ My biggest goal is to
give each student the best
horse experience I can based
on what they want while
keeping everyone safe so they
can learn to be partners with
the most amazing creatures”
From the day she started her
business, to today, she’s given
all her heart into making
Dancing Shadows a home.
Sue Edelburger
Sue Edelburger is a very
hardworking person who put
her two passions together.
Teaching and horses.
Sue is currently a
full time third grade
language arts teacher.
On top of lesson
planning on nights and
weekends, she also
teaches horseback
riding lessons. When
Sue was asked the
question, “How did you
get into your business”,
She responded with,
“From the age of 7 I
rode and worked on the
various farms I rode
with. After taking a
break to raise my kids, I
decided I wanted to get
back into riding.” She
started to teach some
lessons to help out
another instructor, and
soon, after a lot of
convincing from family
and friends, she
opened Dancing
Shadows Equestrian
Center. Sue now has a
busy, chaotic, but joyful
life to live in with her
husband, two kids, four
horses, and many dogs.
The Barn as a
started.

Step Tack Box Craft
1.
You will start off by getting
five 6 inch x 17 inch long
slabs of wood. They should
look like this:
⇩
2.
Then, lay one of the slabs
flat on a surface, and get 2
other slabs. With those 2
slabs you will screw them
on to the sides of that faced
down slab.. It should look
like this:
⇩
3.
Next with your remaining 2
slabs of wood, you will cut
part of the top in a
triangular shape and screw
in a medium sized hole at
the top, the size you want
your handle to be. Just
make sure that you don’t
screw all the way through.
This slab of wood will then
be screwed onto the end of
your box, triangle side
facing up. The cut should
look like this:
4.
After all those steps, your
tool box should be looking
like this but with holes on
the triangular shaped
areas:
5.
Your next step will be to
create a handle for your
tool box. Get a skinny 16.5
inch long metal bar (Can Be
Wooden), which should
look like this:
6.
Once finished getting the
handle, place it on the
upper part of your box into
the holes that you screwed
in before. It should look
like this:
10
Then you have your tack box!

Behind
Horses have many types of actions
that they do, and a very different
way on how they see. Pawing,
kicking, and seeing out the sides of
their head, it’s about time we see
the meaning behind it all. -Aileen
Alfwaress

A horse throws up it’s legs in a snap, other
horses pawing at the ground. The horses can’t see it all.
The process just repeats like a routine, a never ending
cycle. Why does it happen? Why do horses drag their
feet and kick each other? What's the story behind it all?
Pawing In Silence
Horses are always sliding their feet across sand,
over and over, but why? Why do they do this? Well,
according to, “WagWalking.com”, they say it’s for
many reasons. When a horse is nervous, angry, bored,
in pain, hungry, impatient, or just wanting attention,
they are known to paw at the ground with their front
hoof.
They always are doing it, and it can get pretty
annoying. Well, a way to end all this pawing is at our
hands. Also according to the website,
“RainyScorner.com”, they state, "Adjust surrounding
conditions, tend to the horses stance, use reward
training, and stay positive” (Scorner 6). These are all
methods to calm down and stop a horse from pawing,
each one useful depending on the situation of the
horse.
As we can tell, horses paw at the ground for
countless reasons. Each reason having a way to be put
to an end. If your
horse is pawing, you
now know why, and
can overcome it all.
Hoofs skimming the
sand over and over, is
now understandable
in countless ways.
Kicking From The Rear
Horse legs are always flying up at
each other, and the cause can go in many
directions. The main ones, according to,
“EquusMagazine.com”, are like
messages, and these can be: “If they feel
like they are threatened, they just feel
good, they are in pain, they are angry,
they want their own space, or they just
want to show off, stating that they are the
boss” (Williams 5).
Knowing why horses may kick
each other, it’s time to end it. Another
resource, “WagWalking.com”, states,

“To begin modifying your horse’s
behavior, implement a more
intensive exercise program and
evaluate your horse’s feeding
program. A horse that is energetic or
inquisitive will need active exercise
at least five times a week. Each
exercise session should include
games that make your horse think as
well as games that require stamina.
While within their stall, your horse
should be given things to occupy
their time. Stall balls and other toys
or puzzles are available for horses
that need constant stimulation.
Puzzles made specifically for horses
can be attached to the stall walls”
(11).
In summary, in order to allow your horse
to stop kicking, you have to get it to exercise.
Allow your horse to train and run around, and
play with some equipment like balls. This will
help calm your horse. The kicking will be
stopped, and it will be time to move on. Take care
of many other things, besides the horse legs that
always go flying into the air.
Seeing The World
Horses have always had a different way of
seeing the world. With eyes at the sides of their
heads, it’s kind of obvious. Except, there is more
behind it. There is more than meets the eye.
According to, “HorseTalk.com”, they state,
“The horse’s view has been likened to that of a
colour-blind person with problems in the
red-green spectrum, but with variations in gray
regions. The researchers say the illustrations give
only a sense of the colour world of the horse”
(Clarkson 12).
So basically, horses don’t exactly see color.
They also have a blind spot directly in front, and
behind because of their eyes being at the sides of
their head. “HorseandRider.com” states, “As a
prey animal, your horse has monocular vision,
meaning he has one eye on each side of his head”
(Hayes 11). With eyes in that location, a horse's
vision can be a little tricky to understand.
Horses don’t see everything, and what they
do see isn’t colorful. We have also learned that
horses kick and paw for many reasons, and know
how to stop it. Going in depth has showed us what
we never saw before. What’s behind the horse.
Owning a horse is amazing, but it comes
with some challenges. Such as expenses
and proper health care. As fun as it is,
taking care of a horse isn’t the easiest.
We are going to tell you all about it, the
good, and the bad.
- Aileen Alfwaress and Alexis
Huebner

Have you ever begged and begged your parents
to get you a pony? Did they tell you how
expensive that would be? How much thought
and care would have to be put in for that? Well,
they aren’t wrong. Horses are hard to take care
of, and it takes a lot of time and effort. It does
however come with amazing experiences, and
lot’s of passion.
Expenses
Horses come with a lot of expenses, which can add up
quickly. When all of that money adds up, you have to
be cautious of your spendings. Most horse owners
have the daily expenses of feed, bedding, vet, farrier,
dentist, and tack. Along with those simple tasks,
horses are unpredictable, which means anything can
happen, and most likely that will cost money.
Although most of the costs are not interesting, if you
want to invest in showing, lessons, bording, breeding,
trails, and additional adventures, those might attach
money. According to, Money Crashers, “The average
annual cost of horse ownership is $3,876 per horse”
(Williams 4). That is just for one horse. But it is totally
worth it!
Proper Health Care
Owning a horse means a lot of work. Not
only is there paying for lot’s of supplies,
but there is also paying for their health.
Horses need cleaning supplies so that
they stay hygenic, and don’t end up dirty.
This requires commitment, for horses
need to stay clean, and need their
everyday food. According to the website,
Articles.Extension, it states, “Proper
feeding is critical to the overall health of
the horse. Improper feeding can cause
problems such as colic, lameness,
reduced performance and increased
susceptibility to infectious diseases”
(Smith 5).

If horses aren’t fed the meals
needed, they can get sick. Taking
proper care of a horse means having
lot’s of responsibility, for if horses
aren’t fed well, or cleaned well, all
kinds of things could happen.
According to another article, The
Horse, it states, “Ranges from full
care, which includes feeding and
stall cleaning, to self-care, which
includes only a place to keep the
horse and the boarder does all of the
work and provides all of the feed and
bedding” (McCart 9). As seen, not
everything comes simple with
owning a horse. Having to take care
of feeding, a place for them to stay,
and annual checkups, lots of effort
has to be put in. Proper health for
horses is a big deal, and if
considering to buy a horse, it is
important to be aware of this.
Getting meals twice a day, having
fresh water, clean stall, good tack,
and etc, owning a horse means
means having passion. Something
very important.
Entertainment
Now that you’ve heard all about the
hard parts of owning your own
horse, here is the fun part! You may
choose to just have a pasture
companion, or you might take it to
the next level of showing. Or, go to
the medium of playing around, trial
riding, and bonding. What ever you
choose, you and your horse will be
best buds. There are many options of
fun, and entertaining activities, for
you and your fuzzy friend to take
part in. You can go to your local farm
to find out more information about
activities near you. Some of the most
common are egg on spoon races,
riding lessons, community trail rides
and more! According to, 100 Things
to Do with your Horse, “Desensitize
your horse to a tarp (or a water
jump)
1. Try to touch your toes while in
the saddle
2. Learn how to ground drive
your horse
3. Ride a cloverleaf barrel
pattern” (Lisa 3)
In the end, owning a horse
comes with lots of things.
Challenges in taking care of
them, and excitement in all
the fun things. With all the
combinations, having a horse
is magical
