Message To Reader
The three of us, (Alex, JD, and Owen) wrote
this magazine because we wanted to cover
a lot of current pop culture and things going
on in the world right now because there’s so
many big events that have happened
recently that have interested us. We didn’t
want to only cover one topic like sports, we
wanted to go over a lot of current events that
were happening so that we could all write
about what we wanted to and not limit
ourselves to just one topic. On pages like
page 8, we wrote about Lebron James and
on another page, page 28, we wrote about
current popular youtubers like Pewdiepie.
We were very interested in various topics
and wanted to write about them. We came
up with this by thinking of a way to
incorporate all of our ideas together. Then
we realized that most of what we wanted to
write about were things that were currently
happening. So we came up with titling our
magazine “Current Times,” so we could put
all of our ideas in it.

heartbreaking. Well, this

people in California and

are facing more because
of the increase in
wildfires. These fires are
also causing more
significant damage to
places than before in
years past. Read on to
find out how destructive
these fires are getting.
Wildfires Are Changing
Wildfires have been getting worse in
the past few years. The large wildfires
today are twice as big and a lot longer
than wildfires in 1970. The average
wildfires season has also extended 78
days since then. A 1-degree Celsius
increase from global warming is
increasing the normal amount of
burned area by 600%. Even tactics used
by firefighters to lower the destruction
caused by wildfires isn’t changing.
Wildfires are expected to become even
more dangerous in the future with the
climate in areas increasing, causing
more areas affected by wildfires. Even
when humans start wildfires, they’re
getting worse because of warmer
temperatures and drier conditions
spreading fires out more to make them
harder to put out. Because the wildfires
are becoming bigger, they’ve been
creating their own weather disasters
like fire whirls with the strength of a
tornado with 143 miles per hour around
neighborhoods.

California Wildfires Are Being Made
Worse By Humans
Humans are actually a big cause of wildfires. 84% of
wildfires are started from humans. 95% of wildfires
in California are from humans! Many of these
wildfires are started from campfires left unattended
in forests or discarded cigarettes from humans.
They’re starting to happen in unnatural areas where
wildfires aren’t supposed to happen naturally. These
places are normally too wet to be burned or where
lightning isn’t common. Us doing this is also
extending the wildfire season by 3 months. Many of
these human made wildfires are from arson which is
starting a wildfire on purpose which is a serious
crime. You’d might have to face life in prison. Many
of these fires that have been started are from arson.
The most recent have been the Holy fire and the
Cranston fire. Because of humans starting fires, it is
affecting more places and happening more frequently
along with causing more damage than they should to
places.
How Wildfires Are Affecting
Humans And Animals
Because wildfires are getting worse, they’re
affecting humans and animals more. The
population in California is growing and new
people are going to have to be closer to things
that can easily burn from fires like forests. This
can cause more damage and destruction
because of people being more close to these
flammable substances. The air quality is
getting worse as well in the western part of the
United States. This can worsen living
conditions making it harder to live there. For
animals, wildfires benefit them a bit because
animals can hunt their prey that are trying to
escape the burning forest. Wildfires also can
reset forests along with the animals and plants.
This can change the forest completely and
cause the area to have new animals living in it.
Animals do still die from wildfires because of
the smoke and flames and will probably
increase because of the wildfires getting worse.
These wildfires will continue to get worse and
affect us more if we don’t do something to stop
them. We don’t want to return to our homes
destroyed like the people in California, do we?

In 2017, the wildfire season was
very above average. The deadly
fires happened throughout the
west in California, Montana,
Oregon and Washington state. In
2015, the wildfires burned over
10 million acres all over the
United States and half of it in
Alaska by itself. It was the
highest annual total acreage
burned ever since 1960 when the
record-keeping started. In 2012,
wildfires burned 9 million
acres. Colorado had it’s two
most destructive wildfires ever.
They were the Waldo Canyon and
High Park fires. The year before
that the Las Conchas fire in New
Mexico was the state’s largest
in history by a factor of three.
Just next year, the record was
broken by the Whitewater-Baldy
Complex fire that burned almost
twice as much acres.

between solid platforms to different positions of the screen) where you play as character named Madeline that is determined to get to the
summit of a mountain called Celeste to get over her self-doubt and anxiety. You play to get to the summit of the mountain by doing a lot
of different moves like dashes, climbing and wall jumps. Your character fights against the physical embodiment of her self doubt which is
an evil her on her journey to find herself. This game came out on January 25th of 2018 for PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC.

and are able to do what they did back then with plenty of action and adventure. Some of those things are hunting, fishing and
robbing places and much more. You can also find items and animals to use like horses and guns. Some of the items are more
rare than others in the game. There’s also a lot of collectables in the game you can unlock. The game is very realistic with many
aspects of the American West that existed back then. The story to the game is very well done and will spark your emotions with

One major political question in the world right now is if
teachers should be allowed to carry guns. According to
most of the kids, teachers should not be allowed to carry
guns at school. This makes sense because teachers
walking around school with guns isn’t the most
reassuring thing especially if your teacher doesn’t have a
liking for you. However, some kids might feel more
reassured with teachers having guns incase an intruder
entered the building or some other problem. People like
Trump agree that teachers should have guns but most of
the American people believe that the best hands to carry
guns are police officers.

A little more than two-thirds of the kids said that taxes should not be raised on the rich which is another big political question
in the world. That would make sense because it wouldn’t be fair for the people who worked hard for that money and then having
to pay more of the money to the government than people who worked less hard. Higher taxes could also discourages a
business from opening or expanding more. However, it would make sense to says yes to this because a lot more money can be
used to help the poor or other government related things like the military.
Arguably the most important and biggest question currently going on is if the government should make more moves to
prevent climate change. 80% of the kids said that we should because eventually if we don’t climate change could get a
lot more worse and cause even more damage in the future which will especially impact them the most. The argument for
the other side would be we shouldn’t because other places like China, India, and Brazil are the big reasons of why
climate change is happening so they should have to fix it.

Another big question in the world right now is whether there should be a border
wall. 80% of the kids said that there shouldn’t be a wall on the southern border of
the US. This makes sense because there’s some people from corrupt countries that
need to get to the US to be safe. The wall would also cost a lot and has also caused
a government shut down already. Also most of the immigrants enter legally they
just overstay their visas. Saying yes would make sense though sense a lot of drugs
are coming here from Mexico and it could protect us from terrorists trying to get in
illegally.
A more religious question in politics right now is whether the government support a
separation of church and state by removing references to God. Saying no makes
sense because we’ve had references to God for a long time and many people are
catholic or christian in the US. Some people might just not mind it at all. Some
people would say yes though possibly because they are a different religion or have
no religion at all and it goes against their beliefs and what they think.

An even bigger question in the US right now is
there being more restrictions on the current
process of purchasing a gun because of a lot
of shootings have been happening recently. It
makes sense to say yes to this because it’ll
help cause shootings to happen less, saving a
lot of lives from possibly being taken. Some
people could possibly say no because it could
be harder for people to get guns who just want
to go hunting or some other casual activity.
People also might argue that it might mess up
or cause problems with our second
amendment right of the right to own a gun.

It Can Happen To Anyone
Death is unavoidable. Even the
people that we look up to die
someday. I know it's hard to believe
but death happens. We lost some
very special people this year but here
are just a few who should be
recognized.
George H. W. Bush
"History will point out some of the
things I did wrong and some of the
things I did right," commented George
H. W. Bush when asked about his legacy.
He definitely will go down in history. He
was our 41st president and has done so
much for us. Bush’s political career
started when he was elected to the
House of Representatives in 1966. He
then was selected as Ronald Reagan’s
vice president. Mr. Bush finally became
president in 1988. He also helped fund
and create many organizations after he
was president. Unfortunately on
November 30, 2018, George H. W. Bush
passed away. He was age 94. A form of
Parkinson’s disease took his life. It is
sad to see anyone die but especially a
person so important to our nation.
Stan Lee
Have you ever seen any Marvel movies
or read any Marvel comics?

If so, you would think
the stories and
characters were so
intricate and the
extensive amount of
superheroes could not
have been dreamt up by
just a few people. Well if
you thought that, you
would be wrong. Along
with Steve Ditko and
Jack Kirby, Stan Lee
created one of the
greatest comic series
ever. Stan Lee’s first
breakthrough was in
May 1941. From then
success followed. He has
written hundreds of
stories and has created
numerous characters.
His stories have turned
into movies which is
adding to the total
revenue of his career. He
has appeared in many of
his movies acting as a
cameo. Unfortunately on
November 18, 2018 Stan
Lee died from
congestive heart failure.
His life work still
thrives; there are many
movies still coming out
about his stories.
Although he has passed,
his legacy still lives on.

Kate Spade
Kate Spade was the CEO of one of the biggest
purse brands ever. She died on June 5th, 2018.
Her cause of death was suicide. Through a series
of trial and error and getting her handbags in to
retail outlets, Kate Spade created a multi 100
million dollar business. She had everything going
for her, at least that's what it seemed. Kate Spade
suffered lots of anxiety and depression. However,
there was no indication that she was going to
take her own life. It all may seem fine on the
outside but you never know what is happening on
the inside. Kate Spade’s legacy still lives on. Her
brand is still worth millions and it is continuing
to thrive. We will always remember Kate Spade as
one of the greatest handbag designers.

Paul Allen
Bill Gates gets most of the fame for founding Microsoft. But Bill Gates
couldn’t have done it without Paul Allen. Paul Allen was the co-founder of
Microsoft but he was so much more. He was an American business
magnate, investor, software engineer, humanitarian, and philanthropist.
He even was the owner of the Seattle Seahawks, a professional football
team. Paul Allen was just an all around good guy. It is sad that his life has to
come to an end. On October 15, 2018, Mr. Allen’s life ended. It was due to
Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. It is a cancer that affects the lymph nodes.
Paul Allen started charities, helped bring us something we can’t live
without, and just gave back. Paul Allen gave back what he earned. It is heart
wrenching that we couldn’t give back to him and save his life.
Stephen Hawking
Black holes. Do you know anything about them besides that they are
black and a hole? If you know something about them it is probably due
to the studies that Stephen Hawking conducted. Stephen Hawking gave
us so much knowledge that we never knew about. Stephen Hawking
studied cosmology, general relativity and quantum gravity. Without his
research, we would know virtually nothing about black holes. Stephen
Hawking wasn’t your ordinary scientist though. He was diagnosed with
ALS in 1963. ALS gradually paralysed Stephen Hawking to a point where
he had to be in a wheelchair and couldn’t talk. He had to use special
tools in order to talk and continue with his research. Stephen Hawking
was not supposed to live as long as he did. The average life expectancy
of ALS is 2 to 5 years but he lived for 55 years with the disease! It is
incredible how he persevered through all his obstacles. On March 14,
2018, Stephen Hawking’s life came to an end. His research has helped
continue our knowledge about black holes. He will certainly go down as
one of the greatest scientists ever.
