CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
W
ell, another AGM has taken place. Thank you to those who came to support the
club and its committee. I am hoping that this year will be forward-looking and
enjoyable. The Committee is formed from those willing to continue and some
new or returning people. Thank you to John Duffy who is standing down this year and to
Dave Oliver, Paul Hodder and Brian Payne who join us. You will see the full list and roles in
the Newsletter. To you, I hope you will feel able to talk to me or any committee member if
you have a concern, or an idea. Let us know what you would like the club to do.
Now to the purpose of our club:
The Twilight Run was well received, so thank you to Frances for her time plotting and planning.
Puhoi Pub made a good venue to finish.
The Club night presentation “Life in the Funeral Service” was fascinating. Nichola Morrison
talked about her role with interesting examples. There were lots of questions that could
have continued into the night. Many thanks to Jason and Nichola.
The Triple Combined was poorly attended, and considerable work had gone into plotting
each of the 3 sections. The Riley finally made it to the start, and I managed 2 sections before
arms and neck had enough. Chris Harvey was a supportive navigator ignoring the gear
crunches! Lots of fun. Thank you to Leon and Karl who set the first 2 sections and Richard
Lloyd who set the 3 rd . There will be a discussion about the future of this event. Any ideas?
We now look forward to the new year with Paul setting the pace. We have a shed raid
planned in late June. July is Winter Woollies Wander time and August is the Daffodil Rally.
So, lots to get involved in; volunteers will be needed. Also volunteers to do some decorating
for our Winter Festival Dinner on 13 th June’s Club Night. Anne and Dennis McDonald
are leading this so get in touch with them, especially to book your place with a contribution
to the meal.
Further on at Club Nights, don’t forget the annual Prize Giving on 14th August. The club
year for activities finishes at the end of June. After that the points will be tallied and cups
awarded ready for the night.
So, a happy new motoring year to everyone, I hope to see many of you joining in the
events and coming to Club Night for a natter about all things motoring and otherwise.
BRIAN PARKER MEMORIAL RALLY
M
id-April and we hadn’t had a decent run in the Model A for a while so we entered
the Brian Parker Memorial Rally run by the Far North Branch. When he
became ill and knowing that he had but a short time left, Brian Parker went
looking for a car that he could use and in 1974 bought the Model A which we now own and
which, at that time, was in original condition and unrestored.
This year’s rally started at Mangamuka Bridge at 11.30 a.m. with a stop for lunch at Kohukohu
(pictured above). From there we wound our way up Rakautapu Rd, a very scenic road
with great views and just a light garnish of gravel over the clay. The Hokianga’s backroads
have changed little in the 35+ years since we lived there, which seems further proof that
Council amalgamation has offered little benefit to the smaller rural areas. However, these
roads do make for great vintage motoring! After finding the seal again, we passed through
Broadwood and Herekino followed by a short tour around Ahipara before finishing at
Oturu School east of Kaitaia. The rally was a mix of questions, a few photographs to place
in the correct order and silent checks. We found it a most enjoyable run. The rally dinner
was at the Mangonui Cruising Club and was an excellent meal at a very reasonable cost.
Sadly, like many, this rally has not been well supported in recent years. However, if in April
you find yourself with withdrawal symptoms, we can recommend the Brian Parker Memorial
Rally. A great run with a welcoming and friendly bunch of people.
CLUB CAR OF THE MONTH
JASON & NICOLA’S 1936 CHEVROLET MASTER DELUXE HEARSE
I
t’s unlikely that you will remember the
ride if you choose this lovely vehicle for
your final journey, so appreciate it now
while you can!
The Chevrolet was built in 1936 as a hearse by
the coachbuilder Mund, Cotterell & Neilson of
Petone for Funeral Directors Symes, Fleming &
Dick in Wanganui and it subsequently went to
Boyd & Sons in Martinborough where it continued
active service for many years. Paddy
Ryan, daughter of Laurie Boyd who owned it
until 1968, recalls that it was also used as the
family car and this caused a lot of amusement
amongst the general public when the family went to the races in it.
Following a period of ‘rest’ in Cambridge where it was largely dismantled, the hearse—
named Oliver—fell into the hands of Howard Porteous who poured more than just time
into its restoration over a period of ten years in order to get it back into working condition.
The body was basically sound but the bottom 150 mm of both doors had to be replaced
and the rear door was missing so a new one had to be made from scratch. Internally the
body was fitted with lovely macrocarpa
tongue and groove panelling which imparts
a warm and elegant atmosphere.
The diff was in ‘a million pieces’ in a bucket
of water so that needed replacing, so too
did the engine and gearbox. Howard took the
grille to be rechromed but when it was dipped
in preparation for chroming half of it
disintegrated so he had to build a new
one. Howard also did all the paintwork and
the two-tone colour scheme works a treat
and in many ways is much nicer than the
traditional sombre black of most hearses.
12
Jason & Nicola happened across Oliver by chance and instantly fell under his very obvious
charms Within a heartbeat of meeting this glorious example of craftmanship they knew he
was right for Jason Morrison Funeral services, from the classic style, graceful proportions
and handsome looks. They took ownership on 8th November 2015 and Oliver was at work
the very next day. However, it hasn’t all been a bed of roses because Oliver threw a conrod
recently: the block & sump were severely damaged and a replacement engine installed.
It’s the usual 206 c.i./ 3.4 litre six-cylinder motor but it has been fitted with a larger
fan to improve cooling when travelling at funeral speed.
TRIPLE COMBINED RALLY 19 MAY 2019
N
o doubt the early rain put off many people and the turnout for the rally was disappointing
for the organisers who put a lot of effort into it. However, the sun
came out and the views from the high ridges of Kaipara Hills Road were stunning,
particularly from an open car with 360 degree views. The first leg ended at Glorit and
the second leg through the fresh forests around Makarau and then the views from the
heights of Krippner Road were also impressive. The lunch stop was at Wenderholm and
sadly the return of the rain put an end to the rally for some with open cars and no hoods.
MYSTERY MOTORS
W
hat car is this?
Last month’s Mystery Motor was the Holden EFIJY concept car which was
inspired by the 1953 Holden FJ. It was designed and built as a labour of love and after
hours by a group of enthusiasts at the Holden factory in Melbourne. It was intended to
celebrate the 50th anniversary of the FJ but cost constraints and delays meant that it
debuted two years later at the Australian International Motor Show in 2005.
The Efijy is based on a lengthened Chevrolet Corvette floor pan and features a 6.0 litre LS2
V8 engine with a Roots supercharger producing 480 kW (644 hp) at 6,400 rpm and 560 lbft
of torque at 4,200 rpm. Power goes to the rear wheels through a rear mounted 4-speed
automatic transmission with a limited slip diff. It rides on an air suspension system that
lowers the car when it is stopped, and also has electronic instrumentation, including a
multi-use display screen that disappears into
the dash. It’s 5.2m long,(800mm longer than
the FJ) and almost two metres wide (300mm
wider than the FJ). The roof is a only 1.27m
off the deck with its airbag springs dumped
for show, compared to 1.6m for the FJ.
The car was named the US concept car of
the year for 2007 and there have been numerous
attempts to buy it but it is not for
sale and it remains in Australia.
his years VCC Targa Time Trial will be held from the 28th of October (starting in
Taupo), to the 2nd of November (ending in Palmerston North). Peter White in Dunedin
is promoting the event on behalf of Rob Corbet and wrote of last year’s event
“My wife and I participated in this event. It was a wonderful week's motoring, with likeminded
people in an array of vehicles including a 1929 Rolls-Royce, a 1935 Ford Coupe, a
1955 MG TF, a 1956 Jaguar XK140, a 1972 Austin 1100 and sundry other post-vintage vehicles
... all traveling at road-legal speeds. It wasn't a race but a time trial, where you nominated
the speed you planned to average. The options were 50km/hr or 70km/hr.
“Having participated a number of times, in the full Targa Rally some years ago, when the
norm was being up most of the night fixing what you had broken during the previous day's
rallying, last year's Targa Time Trial, by comparison, was a real joy.... normal motoring at
road legal speeds.... nothing broken at the end of each day.... which usually finished with a
meal out with the other participants and a glass of wine or two.”
Cost: Substantial 30% discount of standard entry fee for VCC members with VCC/VIC eligible
THOSE WERE THE DAYS
A VALIANT WRITE-OFF
B
ack in the early 1980s I owned this 1974 V.J Valiant in partnership with my father
– I was still single and living with my parents at Mahurangi Heads.
It was a nice tidy car which I purchased from the Car Salesman at Wilmot Motors.
It was his personal vehicle and it had been well cared for and was rustproofed etc
from new. We had only owned it for a short time when this event occurred.
At this time I was courting Gloria and she had invited me to dinner with her in Wellsford.
So about 5.30pm I left home and headed for Wellsford. It was the winter and by the time I
reached the Dome hill on SH1 it was dark and the road was wet (it had been drizzling). I
should also add that I was sober at the time ! Also, I was only doing about 80kph. I rounded
the first left hand corner at the bottom of the hill and observed 3 sets of headlights of
vehicles coming down the hill. As they came closer I became aware that the 3rd vehicle did
appear to be heading in my direction ! I was very familiar with the road and knew that,
coming up on my left, was a clay bank and that the drain on the roadside was almost waist
deep.
I instantly headed for the bank – there was a loud crashing noise and the Valiant seemed
to leap up, crash down and stop. All of this happened in a millisecond, and I knew I’d hit
the bank and that I had avoided a “head on” accident by doing so. I also knew that this
was serious. I noticed that my seat belt had burst open so I tried to open the door – no
18
success: door was jammed. I then noticed that there was no longer any sign of the windscreen
so I climbed out onto the bonnet and onto the edge of the road. I was amazed to
observe my right front wheel, together with some steering linkage, in the middle of the
highway some 15 to 20ft further up the hill ! I took a brief glance at my vehicle and
thought: man, am I just so lucky to escape uninjured from that !
I then turned my attention to the other car – a big BMW. His front wheel ended up
amongst the foot pedals on the floor and I noticed a big dent in its roof at the top of the
windscreen on the driver’s side – looking at the right hand side of the Valiant in the photo,
I wonder if my car rode up over his right front wheel? He was in a bad state of shock and a
bit later he was taken to hospital (apparently not badly hurt). His 2 teenagers were in the
back seat and one of them had a cut lip and his wife in the front passenger seat was unhurt.
I think the BMW was going too fast for the wet conditions. The road has since been
straightened and there is no longer any deep ditch on the side. At that time those 3 vehicles
had a slight left corner to negotiate.
Amazingly a passing motorist had an early cellphone and called the ambulance & Gloria,
who then came and picked me up. She was much relieved to find me in the back of the
Ambulance and OK. The next day I visited the local Chiropractor – I had a stiff neck ! I also
had both kneecaps badly bruised. Later that day when looking inside the wrecked car, I noticed
the steel dash was dented either side of the steering column.
I felt very lucky to have been in the old Valiant as my usual form of transport was a 105E
Anglia van and I would not have stood a chance in that !
TRIP TO SABAH
A
nne Richardson joined Doug and me for a two week tour of Sabah (North Borneo).
The big attraction was the Orangutans but in reality we were rewarded with so
much more. Kota Kinabalu, the capital, was rich in history and colour. The city
was clean, quiet and with huge markets along the waterfront and oh, such lovely people.
The tour was a group of eight: three from England, two Aussie ladies and us three. Our
guide, Jeffry was friendly, helpful and so knowledgeable about his country, its fauna and
flora, and the animal inhabitants. The itinerary included a night in the Sabah Tea Plantation,
two nights in a lodge on the banks of the Kinabatangan River where we were escorted
on river cruises, a night walk in the jungle (mind the leeches!) and a stroll through a local
village. The highlights here were seeing the Pygmy elephants and a night sighting of the
elusive banded palm civet.
Our next destination was Sandakan, the original capital of North Borneo. Highlights on the
trip were the Gomantang limestone caves where swiftlets nests are harvested for birds’
nest soup, and the Memorial to the POWs who died on the death marches at the end of
WWll. Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary was both moving and hilarious as we watched the
antics of the baby orangutans learning how to adapt to jungle life, followed by a visit to see
the rescued Sun Bears that eventually will be rehabilitated and released into the wild.
These are the smallest bear in the world. Final visit here was the Proboscis Monkey
20
Sanctuary where we got up close and personal with long tailed Macaques as well.
After two nights we flew back to Kota Kinabalu for a short speed boat ride to Manukan Island
in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine National Park. Fabulous accommodation, right
on a beautiful sandy beach with its continuous stream of day trippers all decked out with
life jackets and snorkelling gear. We had three snorkel trips here and saw both fish & coral
that none of us had seen before. Unfortunately it was also jellyfish season so our swims
were a bit fraught.
We had a farewell dinner in Kota Kinabalu for our last night then we transferred to another
hotel: Anne for one night while we stayed an extra three. We all enjoyed the museum,
which was very modern with great displays of Borneo’s history, culture and people. On our
final day Doug and I visited the Lok Kawau wildlife park and enjoyed seeing animals we had
not so far encountered. We saw a good variety of the wildlife Sabah has to offer, enjoyed
most of the food, loved the temperatures and had fun.
