Goodbye to Windows 7 

Dear Readers. 

After a fairly busy month installing Windows 10 on almost 200 school computers, I will 

be glad to see the back of May! Windows 7 has gone into its “end of life” time frame 

and what does this mean? In short, on 14 January 2020, Microsoft will no longer offer 

support, you will still get your security updates but no other updates. I was surprised to 

read whilst researching for this article that Windows 7 has been around for 10 years as 

it was released in July 2009. This is making me feel old as I remember Windows XP, 

Windows ME, 98 and 95, and in the dim recesses of my brain, I have some vague 

memories of Dos 3.1. 

Anyway, what do you need to do? Ultimately Microsoft wants you to upgrade to the next 

version, ideally Windows 10, but 8.1 will do as well. However, I would recommend 

avoiding 8.1 as it was as much of a let-down as a balloon with a hole in it. 8.1 also is in 

its “end of life” state as of January 2018, and by 2023 it will be gone as well. You have 

options. If you were feeling brave you could move to Mac, or keep hanging in there until 

the very last possible moment, or upgrade sooner than later. 

There are options for buying your next version of Windows. You can walk into any local 

supplier and buy a copy, some will even include a backup and restore service with your 

newly acquired system, or you could buy a brand shiny new computer complete with 

the latest software on it, or you could buy online and install it yourself if you have a 

basic knowledge and understanding of what you have to do. Installations have become 

a lot easier over the years, but if you do try it for yourself you do so at your own risk. 

Finally, you can download direct from Microsoft. Have a look at the link here

download your upgrade and buy online as an option too. Good luck with whatever route 

you choose!

Message from the Nurses! Isabel Tomlin retires after 40 years in the NHS 

Lynton Integrated Nursing Team are sorry to be losing one of our experienced trained 

nurses, Isabel. She is one of our Queen’s Nurses, receiving the title alongside Alison 

and Amy in 2012. The Queen’s Nursing Institute is a professional organisation, 

committed to raising the profile of community nursing and maintaining high standards. 

A 4th member of the team has recently applied for and been awarded the title – Jo 

Sutton. Congratulations to Jo. 

Isabel has worked for the NHS for over 40 years - she has worked as a Theatre Nurse, a 

Practice Nurse, and for over 10 years here at Lynton wearing the 3 hats of District, 

Practice and Minor Injury nursing. Her kind, compassionate approach to both patients 

and colleagues will be sorely missed, as will her mentoring and teaching skills. Many 

students have worked with Isabel as their mentor over the years and have thoroughly 

enjoyed the experience, often deciding to make the community their home on 

qualifying. She is an inspirational member of our team, and a great role model. 

Isabel’s last working day was Friday 24th May all of us in the nursing team and 

everyone else at Lyn Health, would like to send our very best wishes to Isabel and her 

husband Mike, and hope she enjoys retirement with her family. Lots of love to you, from

When you think of all of the energy, skill and knowledge that growing vegetables takes, it’s shocking 

that approximately one third of all food produced in the world for human consumption is lost or wasted. 

Something as simple as reducing food waste is a powerful thing, and is the third most effective way to 

tackle climate change. 

One of the ways to combat food waste is the so-called ‘compleating’ – simply put, it’s about eating the 

whole ingredient or food, and letting no edible parts go to waste. Making your veg go further by using more 

of the plant is a wonderful way to explore new recipes, pack more nutrients into your meals, and save 

money too. 

Carrot top pesto Last summer a surprising recipe was a real hit at Riverford - carrot top pesto. Feathery 

carrot tops are full of flavour and if they’re in reasonable condition they’re good to eat, so there's no need to 

throw them on the compost. This pesto is great tossed through pasta or drizzled over roasted carrots, new 

potatoes or greens. Try crumbling mozzarella or sheep’s cheese over the top too. You can freeze the pesto 

in ice cube trays for portion control,or keep covered with a layer or olive oil in the fridge for a few days. 

Leafy tops from 1 bunch of carrots, larger stems discarded, feathery leaves chopped 

Small handful basil leaves, or try parsley or chervil for a different flavour 

50g walnuts, hazelnuts or almonds 

25g Parmesan, or vegetarian equivalent 

1 garlic clove 

Approx. 100ml or so olive oil 

Salt & pepper 

1. In a food processor, blitz the carrot tops, basil, nuts, parmesan and garlic. 

2. Gradually add enough oil to make a pesto consistency. 

3. Season to taste. 

Be a breadwinner It’s not just veg that is found in British bins - a massive 22.4 per cent of all bread is 

thrown away, so here is a delicious recipe that will transform your crusts into a really special dish. 

Poor man’s Parmesan, or pangrattato, is made from breadcrumbs fried with garlic and chilli. It’s 

traditionally used to sprinkle over pasta dishes like this Linguine with purple sprouting broccoli and chilli, 

with poor man’s Parmesan. 

200g linguine (or use spaghetti) 

4 tbsp olive oil, plus some for drizzling 

2 anchovies (optional) 

1 large garlic clove, finely chopped 

4 tbsp coarse breadcrumbs 

Finely grated zest of ½ lemon 

½-1 red chilli, deseeded & finely chopped 

200g purple sprouting broccoli, cut into even-sized pieces if large 

Small handful fresh parsley, chopped 

Salt & pepper 

1. Cook the pasta in salted boiling water according to the packet. 

2. Meanwhile, gently heat 4 tablespoons of oil in a pan, add the anchovies if using and mash them in with 

a wooden spoon. Add the garlic and breadcrumbs and stir until crispy. Stir in the lemon zest and chilli. 

3. Steam or boil the broccoli for 4 minutes until tender. 

4. Drain the pasta and stir in a good drizzle of olive oil and the parsley. Toss with the broccoli and 

breadcrumbs. Season to taste.

Trading Standards – Beware of rogue traders 

Rogue traders often offer driveway and tarmacking repairs or white-line painting 

services to businesses but charge far too much for a poor-quality or unfinished job, or 

take the money up front and vanish without doing any work. They may also fail to give 

the customer the correct paperwork they are legally required to provide. Rogue traders 

may say they are working for the council or other authority and show identification 

cards to try to look legitimate. They may say they have leftover tarmac from resurfacing 

roads but council or highways authorities would never offer leftover materials to the 

public. Not all traders who ‘cold call’ are rogue traders, but remember: 

Never agree to work from someone you think might be a rogue trader. 

If you're not sure, don't make a contract with them. 

If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. 

Properly check the identity of callers. 

If you think a crime is being committed now or you are in danger, call the police on 999 

immediately. For non-emergencies, call the police on 101. If you want to have work done: 

Get three quotes from reputable businesses you trust. 

Ask other businesses, friends or family for recommendations. 

Use a scheme or association to find reliable businesses eg ”Buy With Confidence” 

or an appropriate trade association..

Silent 999 calls Silent 999 calls are not automatically transferred 

to the Police as they may have been dialled accidentally. However 

there is a procedure which the Police request the emergency 

operator to follow for silent 999 calls. PLEASE NOTE – we do not 

recommend anyone calls 999 silently. DIALING 999. You will be 

asked “Emergency which service?” If you do not respond you will be 

asked “Do you need Fire, Police or Ambulance?” If you still do not respond the operator will 

say: “What number have you dialled please? I cannot release your line until you say that you 

do not need an emergency service” and then: “If you are unable to speak but need an 

emergency service please tap the handset, cough or make a noise” the operator will wait 45 

seconds. If the operator does not get a response to any of the above questions the call is put 

through to a Police automated message, PRESS 55 when prompted. There is more information

Dogs die in hot cars Never leave a dog unattended in a vehicle even on a mildly warm day. 

Dogs can die when left unattended even when a vehicle is in the shade, a window is open and 

there is water available. The British weather can switch suddenly so even on cloudy days 

leaving a dog in any vehicle can prove fatal. Every year the Kennel Club hears reports of dogs 

being cooked alive after being left in vehicles in hot weather, a situation which can so easily be 

avoided. For those travelling with their dogs during the summer months the Kennel Club has

Jam-pecked June will see over 14,000 hens break records 

This summer is set to be a record breaker for a national hen welfare charity, with 

more than 14,000 birds being saved from slaughter – 1,100 of which will be rehomed 

in Devon. The British Hen Welfare Trust’s network of 900+ volunteers will be flocking 

to farms all over the UK to take hens out of their cages, with the end goal being to 

rehome them in people’s back gardens. BUT the charity needs the public’s help! 

With over 14,000 ladies looking to start their free-range retirements in a single 

month, they’re appealing to people who have bit of extra space in their back garden 

plus a passion for animals to get in touch. Most of the hens being rehomed have been 

living in cages for 18 months, working hard to lay eggs for supermarkets and to go 

into processed foods. Once they reach that age their egg laying slows down so they 

are sent to slaughter. That is, unless the BHWT steps in to rehome them as pets. The 

charity can’t guarantee the hens will continue laying, but nine times out of 10 you’ll 

get enough eggs to enjoy a free-range eggy breakfast. A pet with benefits!

Cliff Railway Day at Lynton and Lynmouth – 11 th May A whole day of Victorian, 

Steampunk and family events included entertainment by the ever popular Exmoor Border Morris 

dancers as well as an original street theatre drama written by John Frankish, the town‟s Mayor, 

and performed by Cliff Railway staff and local residents. The day included a Beach Clean 

provided by BeachCareSW and support from the National Park Centre and other attractions 

including Exmoor Zoo, Combe Martin Wildlife Park and Quince Honey Farm. Traditional Victorian 

organ music, ponies and other activities provided a fun packed day which was closed with music 

provided by local Ilfracombe band „Such and Vincent‟ at the Ancient Mariner. General Manager 

Ashley Clarke commented that almost 2,000 people had travelled on the Cliff Railway during the 

day including visitors from Europe and America and said “It‟s good news for the whole area to see 

visitor numbers are growing and I believe local businesses can look forward to a busy summer”.

Pilgrimage on the route to Santiago de Compostela 

On the 27th April, 2020, we propose to walk a section of the Camino de Santiago (or 

the Way of Saint James). 

Starting at Lugo, and over a period of 7 days, we will cover a distance of 70 miles, 

reaching the Cathedral at Santiago, where we will receive the traditional ‘Compostela’ 

certificate verifying we have done the Camino de Santiago. 

This will be organised through Santiago Ways, who will arrange accommodation at 

hotels , country houses or guesthouses, provide breakfast, dinner and picnic, and 

transfer our luggage daily, leaving us unencumbered to enjoy the scenery. 

The route will take us from Lugo, crossing forests and farmland, following the old 

Roman paved roads and crossing beautiful medieval bridges. 

The cost is approximately £555 per person. Our return flight to Santiago will be about 

£100 per person, or some may like to travel by car via Brittany Ferries.

Enjoy a magical Exmoor summer evening 

in aid of Children’s Hospice 

Exmoor will be the stunning backdrop for a magical evening 

of entertainment being held in aid of Children’s Hospice 

South West (CHSW) this summer. 

The charity’s special Woolhanger Manor Summer Concert on Saturday, June 8 will 

feature a performance by the renowned Ultimate Bublé – the UK’s leading Michael 

Bublé tribute artist. 

The evening at centuries old manor house near Parracombe will 

start with a glass of fizz and canapés on the lawn, which boasts 

panoramic views of the beautiful National Park. 

There will be entertainment with young Devon magician Tom 

Rose before a delicious two-course dinner in Woolhanger’s 

beautifully-restored Grade II listed music room, followed by a 

performance by Ultimate Bublé and a charity auction. 

Tickets are priced £49.50 and include a free bus service, with 

pick-ups from Ilfracombe, Braunton and Barnstaple. Dress code 

for the evening is lounge suits. 

All proceeds from the event will go to CHSW’s Little Bridge House hospice near 

Barnstaple, which is dedicated to making the most of short and precious lives by 

providing a range of medical and respite care for children with life-limiting conditions, 

as well as their families. 

CHSW community fundraiser Josh Allan said: “This really is the perfect event for a 

summer get-together with friends, family or colleagues, and a great way to show your 

support for your local children’s hospice, which currently supports nearly 200 children 

with life-limiting conditions and their families. Our Woolhanger concerts always prove 

to be very popular and this is set to be another night not to be missed!”

A guitarist/singer paired with a Cajun 

drummer/singer are unlikely to sound like 

anything other than what it says on the box. 

However, when 'High Times' played the 

'Crown’ recently they proved to be far more 

than one might expect. Their basic duo 

sound was transformed by the input of a 

brilliant young female flautist. She played 

powerful and imaginative improvised phrases around each song and raised them way 

above the usual safe 'covers' style that so many adhere to. The sound of a flute always 

seems to blend well with vocals and the excellent vocal harmony sound of 'High Times' 

worked so well that each song seemed to surpass the original version. It was an excellent 

blend of pleasant music injected with the spark and fire of a jazzy approach. The 'Crown’ 

have several interesting bands booked over the next few months; check out the poster 

just inside the door and make certain that you go along. It's an excellent venue and well 

worth a visit. 

Venues in the area are really getting behind the music scene this summer so you'll 

have to do a little planning to ensure that you take full advantage of what's going on. We 

all owe it to this wonderful community to ensure that our visitors enjoy their trip to the full 

and return time and again. Show them that this is a great place to practise the ancient 

craft of being alive and not just coasting along until the lights go out. 

Summer's here with some great weather (So Far), lots of happy visitors and an 

amazing, welcoming community to greet them. The entertainment scene is really 

humming (And singing and dancing and playing) so we're all going to enjoy another 

season. 

Genial Gary at the 'Cottage Inn' is well on the way to giving us another amazing 'Fat 

belly beer and music festival. Many venues are planning live music in some form or 

another. 'Old- Geezer- Plays- Guitar has brushed up his timeless act and his winning 

smile and rumour has it that he has got a pair of new running shoes to ensure he can 

keep up with his rapidly disappearing audience (and evade the rapidly advancing hordes 

who wish he would just go back to his pile of damp twigs and earth until winter. 

SO! Have a fun summer and keep it going by giving your full support to our 'movers 

and shakers' as they strive to keep this wonderful place alive and kicking.

News from the Exmoor Pony Centre, Ashwick, Dulverton TA22 9QE 

Due to the lovely weather, the whole of the Easter 

holidays was extremely busy and we were fully booked 

for rides on many days. We had a good time at the 

Exmoor Day in the South Molton Pannier Market when 

Linzi took Tom and Rama to meet the public. They 

attracted lots of interest from people who then visited 

us on the Sunday at our Activity Day where we made 

an Easter record breaking amount!! 

We have had two very successful Birthday Pony Parties where the children, groom, 

ride and play games with the ponies, and Linzi has given another of her very popular 

presentations, this time to the Torrs Ladies Club in Ilfracombe. If you would like 

information on how to book a party, or a presentation or talk, please do contact us. 

You may have noticed some of our re-homed ponies providing a beautiful background 

to an interview on a recent Countryfile programme. These ponies live on estates near 

Rothbury, Northumberland. Another six of our ponies are with Dorset Wildlife Trust, 

conservation grazing at their Powerstock Common Nature Reserve, tackling some of 

the tough grasses and scrub to help manage the site's biodiversity. 

We have recently acquired the use of a new yard near Bratton Fleming which we plan 

to use for the handling of new foals and for bringing on young ponies away from the 

distractions of the Pony Centre. We have already started long reining and walking 

ponies out to get them used to the surroundings. 

We would like to thank everyone who has given donations and raised funds for us, 

including Prism Equine Laundry who raised £184.50 by donating 50p to our charity 

during one month for every rug they washed. Our thanks also to everyone who 

contributed to the quiz at the Sportsman’s Inn which raised £717. Over 80 people 

took part and there were lots of generous donations from local companies for the 

raffle prizes.

LYN LAWN TENNIS CLUB is holding an AGM on the 19 th June 2019 ?pm at the Lynton 

Bowls Club to discuss the coming season, all are welcome. We would also like to announce the
