THE MOUSE'S INVITATION CARDS
‘Come at seven,’ ‘Come at nine,’
‘Come whenever you want.’
On the shelf the printed cards
Seem kind in their intent.
But the mouse will always stay at home,
He will never venture out,
No matter how the cards insist
Friends are all about.
One's from a cat, one's from an owl,
And both are intent
To draw him from his nest and then
Have him where they want.
