Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure 

Code, will come into force on May 

15, the state government said. The 

order has been issued in view of the 

southwest monsoon, which is at Goa’s 

doorstep. The move is likely to come as 

a relief to motorists. 

The ban on digging will apply to private 

agencies, government departments and 

semi-government undertakings. It also 

applies to civic bodies. During the threemonth 

period, any digging or cutting of 

public roads and their shoulders, including 

all city and village roads, will require prior 

written permission from the collector. 

The order also states that any such 

digging will immediately be covered 

within six hours and properly paved or 

celented within 24 hours.

The surfacing of tar balls on the Goan 

beaches is not just a concern for 

tourism, but the preliminary study by 

CSIR-NIO has expressed a possibility 

of impacting the humans due to 

presence of hazardous pathogens 

nurturing on them. 

After conducting detail study on the 

reasons for tar-ball deposition along 

Goa coast, Scientists from CSIR- 

National Institute of Oceanography 

(NIO) has embarked on a three-yearlong 

project under State Directorate 

of Science and Technology to 

unearth the impact of tar balls on 

marine biodiversity. The study will 

also identify the presence of microorganisms 

on the tar balls, which 

usually surface during pre-monsoon 

period, mostly in the last week of May. 

A tar ball is a semi-solid blob of 

crude-oil, and it is formed due to 

weathering of crude oil in the ocean. 

The tar ball deposition is basically due 

to off-shore oil exploration, oil tanker 

accidents, release of bilge and ballast 

water from ships, etc. 

Goa has been witnessing tar-ball 

phenomenon for nearly a decade now. 

The latest incident was reported last 

month along Candolim and Anjuna 

coast.

A team of NIO scientists comprising 

of Rakhee Khandeparkar and Sameer 

Damare are now working on the 

project to identify its impact. 

They have been sampling water 

and sediments from the beaches like 

Vagator and Morjim in North Goa and 

Cansaulim and Betul in South Goa, 

which are the hotspots for tar ball 

arrivals along the shore. 

Senior Scientist working in 

Biological Oceanography division, said 

that Tar balls contain hydrocarbons 

including polycyclic aromatic 

hydrocarbons which poses significant 

environmental risk. 

She said the kind of pathogens that 

are coming on the beaches due to tar 

balls is not good. 

“It is indirectly changing biota of 

marine waters, which might affect 

planktons, zooplanktons and thereby 

affecting fishes which we humans eat,” 

she said. 

Pathogens are a bacterium, virus or 

other microorganism that can cause 

disease. 

“Marine organisms are affected. 

Also, if human body come in contact 

with these tar balls, then it can cause 

serious infection and hence poses being 

hazardous,” she explained further. 

Khandeparkar however, said that 

these are just preliminary findings and 

unless the study concludes on the type 

of pathogens, we cannot exactly spell 

out its impact in large. 

The study on this would be completed 

by 2021. Along with listing its impact 

on the marine life and biodiversity, the 

NIO will also recommend government 

that needs to be taken to tackle the 

menace. 

Scientist said that the “preliminary 

study has reveals that the bacterial 

diversity changes a lot due to tar balls.” 

“What we see before tar balls entry 

is different from what we see when tar 

balls are present. The types of bacterias 

differ and mainly pathogens are 

increasing,” she added. 

“Unless we come to the conclusion 

about pathogens we cannot say 

whether they are hazardous. But oil is 

there so on that micro organism grow. 

There are reports that they enrich on 

tar balls. They utilized oil as food. So it 

is harmful,” she stated. 

Khandeparkar urged the beach 

cleaning agencies and locals to 

ensure that the tar balls are discarded 

properly once removed from the shore. 

“What many do is that, they just clean 

the shore and don’t discard it properly. 

They just burry it and during high-tide, 

it again gets washed away,” she said. 

Air India gets Jet's 

unused foreign 

traffic rights 

New Delhi: State-run Air India seems to 

be finally getting its preferential rights 

in allocation of traffic rights over foreign 

routes after losing it to private carriers 

in the previous UPA government. 

The government has decided to 

allot it about 5,700 weekly seats out of 

grounded Jet Airways' unused quota on 

the lucrative India-Dubai route. 

The public sector airline has also 

been promised over 5,000 seats on 

India-Qatar route besides about 4,600 

additional seats to and from London 

following the re-allocation of grounded 

Jet's unused international traffic rights. 

A Civil Aviation Ministry told IANS 

that Air India will get preference in 

allocation of bilateral seat entitlements. 

"The allocation would be for the 

ongoing summer schedule and considered 

temporary given that efforts are on to 

revive Jet Airways," said a reliable source. 

Amid faint possibility of grounded 

Jet Airway's revival anytime soon, the 

ministry had on May 3 held a meeting 

with local carriers to discuss re-allocation 

of the airline's foreign traffic rights. 

Private carriers SpiceJet, IndiGo, GoAir, 

Vistara and Air India had pitched for 

bigger share of the pie in the last meeting. 

While IndiGo co-founder Rahul Bhatia 

had suggested for allocating foreign traffic 

rights in proportion to various airlines' 

fleet capacity, Vistara argued that smaller 

airlines be given bigger share. 

Jet Airways had last month 

withdrawn operations due to severe 

fund crunch and remain grounded in 

absence of a viable revival plan. 

While re-allocation of traffic rights 

would ensure additional capacity on 

various popular foreign routes thus 

reducing fare level, it will significantly 

affect the valuation of Jet Airways.

sanctions, India, 

China join hands 

on oil 

New Delhi: Acting against the US 

backdrop on sanction on Iranian Oil 

imports, India and China are closely 

working on these common trade 

concerns which also includes buying 

oil and gas said sources with direct 

knowledge of the matter. 

The two countries who happen to be 

the world’s second- and third-largest oil 

importers are reported to be working 

on finding a common ground where the 

two nations can collectively bargain 

for better prices from producers said a 

source on condition of anonymity. 

The two nations have created a 

joint working group on oil and gas 

following a visit by Li Fanrong deputy 

chief of China’s National Energy 

Administration to New Delhi in March. 

This arrangement between the two 

sides to cooperate will be the first 

institutionalized arrangement apart 

from other cooperation on issues such 

as counter-terrorism and the boundary 

dispute, HT reports. 

“A meeting between petroleum and 

natural gas secretary MM Kutty and 

the vice minister of China’s National 

Energy Administration, Li Fanrong, 

was held on March 26 in New Delhi 

to discuss cooperation in the oil and 

gas sector,” a government official said 

while another added “both sides are 

closely discussing” cooperation in key 

areas such as oil purchases. 

Iran remained the most important 

source of energy security for India 

and China as it is one of the largest 

suppliers of crude to the two major 

economies and with the US imposed 

sanctions on Iranian oil imports, the 

supply is disrupted causing huge 

economic loss to both countries.

The demand for destination weddings in Turkey rose eight times 

compared to the previous year.

and Wedding Forum (IMWF) 2019 in 

the resort city of Antalya, Necip Fuat 

Ersoy, Managing Partner IMWF said 

that India has become the main market 

of wedding tourism in the world. 

"The Indian weddings are a segment 

in Turkey with high added value," 

Ersoy said. 

He also said that following the last 

year's IMWF event, the demand for 

destination weddings in Turkey rose 

eight times compared to the previous 

year and that Turkey has already 

hosted five big Indian wedding events 

since the beginning of 2019.

tourism events in 2019, and expects 

demands two or three times more

size discovered 

NASA has amazing news for the Space 

lovers. The new satellite from the 

agency has found an Alien planet. This 

newly discovered planet is almost the 

same size of the earth. The satellite

Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite 

(in short TESS). 

Besides this Alien world, TESS also 

discovered a sub Neptune world. This 

world is revolving around HD-21749. The 

sun Neptune lies almost 53 light years 

away from earth. This has been reported 

by a new report from the agency. 

Johanna Teske, who is the co-author 

in the study, informed TESS is already 

playing a significant role in planet 

hunting. Johanna is a part of the 

Department of Terrestrial Magnetism 

(DTM), Carnegie Institution for 

Science in Washington DC. TESS 

flew above SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket 

and started hunting for planets right 

from the Earth’s orbit. It is exploring

Facebook mulls its own 

Bitcoin currency - report 

Facebook is all set to create a fuss 

in the economy with its all new 

concept of digital coin for transaction 

purpose. This indeed is a hot issue for 

all Facebook users. The Wall Street 

Journal has disclosed Facebook’s plan 

to launch a new method of payment for 

its billions of users all over the world. 

This crypto-currency will use a type of 

a ‘digital coin’ similar to that of Bitcoin. 

But with an aim to keep the currency 

value stable. This is superior to the 

other crypto-currencies as their values 

are known to be unstable. Facebook is 

planning to launch this new currency 

together on the platform of WhatsApp, 

Messenger and Instagram. The name 

and further details are not known, but

up as small flashes of light when these 

cross the respective host planets. 

Before TESS, Kepler space telescope 

from NASA also followed the same 

approach to identify Alien worlds. 

Kepler is no more in use but it has done 

a great job in identifying 70% of 4000 

exoplanets which have been discovered 

till now. NASA predicts that TESS will 

identify more such space bodies and 

will cross TESS. 

The astronomers are hoping that 

TESS will be able to identify such 

Alien worlds which lie near to other 

NASA instruments, like James Webb 

Space Telescope. This will help them 

carry out an in-depth study. For this 

purpose NASA is installing James 

Webb in 2021. This space instrument 

will have the capability of inspecting 

the atmosphere of the Alien Worlds. 

For example, it will look for gases as 

these are symbols of life.

India to get 

another 'eye 

in the sky' on 

May 22 

NEW DELHI: India is set to get 

another ‘eye in the sky’ as Indian 

Space Research Organization (Isro) 

will launch its latest radar imaging 

satellite (Risat-2BR1) from Sriharikota 

in Andhra Pradesh on May 22. 

Risat-2BR1 is more advanced than 

the previous Risat-series satellite. 

“Its launch is due on May 22. Though 

the new satellite looks like the old 

one from outside, its configuration is 

different from the first one launched. 

Therefore, the new satellite has 

enhanced surveillance and imaging 

capabilities,” a source in Isro told TOI 

Risat’s X-band synethic aperture radar 

(SAR) possesses day-night as well as 

all-weather monitoring capability. 

The radar can also penetrate clouds 

and zoom up to a resolution of 1 meter 

(means it can distinguish between two 

objects separated by 1 m distance). 

“The Risat satellite can take images of a 

building or an object on the earth at least 

2 to 3 times a day, “the source said.” So, it 

can help keep an eye on the activities of 

jihadi terror camps in Pakistan-occupied 

Kashmir (PoK) and infiltrators at terror 

launchpads along the LoC.

keep an eye on infiltrators. 

The synthic aperture rudder uses 

the motion of the radar antenna over a 

target region to provide a comparison 

of conventional beam-scanning radars. 

The distance the SAR satellite travels 

over a target in the time taken for the 

radar pulses to return the antenna to 

the large synthetic antenna aperture.

Chinese tech major Xiaomi on Monday 

announced the Mi Express Kiosk 

initiative across India. The new Mi 

Express Kiosks are essentially vending 

machines that allow consumers and Mi 

Fans to purchase Xiaomi smartphones 

and mobile accessories directly. 

Xiaomi Global VP Manu Kumar Jain 

inaugurated the first kiosk at Manyata 

Tech Park in Bengaluru. The kiosks are 

designed to accept all forms of payments 

across credit cards, debit cards, cash 

and UPI. A touch screen lets buyers 

interact with the vending machine and 

select the device of their choice. 

By introducing these vending machinestyle 

kiosks, the brand has yet again 

developed a new retail strategy in reaching 

out to its consumers directly, eliminating 

operational and cost inefficiencies for 

the consumers. According to Xiaomi, 

Mi Express Kiosks serve as a highly 

effective initiative for consumers to 

easily access and buy Xiaomi products

NEW DELHI: India is increasingly becoming a focal point 

for fashionistas with more than 300 international brands 

expected to open stores in the next two years, according to 

McKinsey Fashionscope. 

A rapidly growing middle-class, increasingly powerful 

manufacturing sector and strong economic fundamentals make 

the country too important for international brands to ignore. 

"Economic expansion is happening across Asia, but we 

expect that 2019 will be the year in which India will take 

centre stage," said McKinsey's report titled 'The State of 

Fashion 2019.' 

The country is being propelled by strong macroeconomic 

tailwinds and is predicted to grow at 8 per cent a year between 

2018 and 2022. The Indian middle class is forecast to expand at 

19.4 per cent a year, outpacing China, Mexico and Brazil. 

"As a result, India is set to move from being an increasingly 

important sourcing hub to being one of the most attractive 

consumer markets outside the Western world." 

India's apparel market will be worth 59.3 billion dollars 

(about Rs 4.12 lakh crore) in 2022, making it the sixthlargest 

in the world and comparable to Britain 65 billion 

dollars (Rs 4.51 lakh crore) and Germany 63.1 billion 

dollars (Rs 4.38 lakh crore), according to data from 

McKinsey's FashionScope city-level growth forecasting 

tool. The aggregate income of the addressable population 

(individuals with over 9,500 dollars or Rs 6.6 lakh in 

annual income) is expected to triple between now and 2025. 

"Given these dynamics, it is little surprise that more 

than 300 international fashion brands are expected to open 

stores in India in the next two years." 

But the report said India remains a complex market 

which presents challenges as well as opportunities. 

The apparel business is still largely unorganised with 

formal retail accounting for just 35 per cent of sales in 

2016. Its share is likely to reach around 45 per cent by 

2025, still a relatively low proportion. 

Significantly, China will for the first time in centuries 

overtake the United States as the world's largest fashion 

market. "It will be a year of awakening after the reckoning of 

2018 -- a time for looking at opportunities, not just challenges."

Instagram testing 

new Stickers with 

song lyrics 

Facebook-owned messaging app 

Instagram is testing a new Sticker 

feature that will show music lyrics of a 

song playing in the Stories background. 

Still in development, the feature 

was predicted in April on Twitter by 

reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong, 

who even demonstrated its working in 

a short music video from Rick Ashley’s 

“Never Gonna Give You Up” along 

side its lyrics, The Verge reported on 

Saturday. 

Details about what exact region is 

the app testing the feature in remains 

unclear as of now. Information about 

its public availability also remains 

undisclosed. 

In 2018, the photo-messaging app 

brought music to its Stories feature, 

allowing users to add background 

music to accompany their posts and 

customise their Stories with specific 

clips for certain pictures or videos. 

In December, Instagram added some 

additional musical features, allowing 

users to respond to questions with songs, 

along with countdowns and question 

stickers for live videos, the report added. 

Madonna defends eurovision performance, says 

she won’t be silenced by “Political Agenda” 

Madonna has defended her upcoming performance at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv, Israel, 

amid a call from Palestinian and human rights activists for artists and viewers to boycott the competition. 

Last September, more than 100 artists 

co-signed an open letter asking the 

Contest to move the competition from 

Israel, citing an incident in May where 

the Israeli army killed 62 Palestinian 

protesters and injured hundreds more 

in Gaza. 

The Boycott, Divestment and 

Sanctions movement has grown 

recently in artistic circles — most 

notably, Lana Del Rey and Lorde 

cancelled concerts in Israel when fans 

asked them to. 

Many artists continue to play 

Israel while condemning the ongoing 

bloodshed in the Israeli/Palestine 

conflict, including Nick Cave, who last 

year wrote an open letter calling “the

its app to India that is built for low-end 

Android smartphones. 

After successful tests in markets

look and feel to the main app is now 

available in Beta for the Indian users.

participate on the stage, but without 

the contract, it can’t happen.”

continues with the second semi-final 

on May 18, and the finale airing live on 

SBS at 5am Sunday 19 May. Australian

A new 'Mortal Kombat' 

movie will start filming 

this year 

'Aquaman' and 'Furious 7' director James Wan is 

producing the reboot. 

More than two decades after the last 

movie, another Mortal Kombat film 

is on the way. Pre-production will 

start this month and the cameras are 

scheduled to start rolling in Adelaide, 

Australia later this year. South 

Australia Premier Steven Marshall 

said it'll be the biggest film production 

in the state's history. 

Aquaman and Furious 7 director 

James Wan is producing the film, 

while Simon McQuoid is making his 

feature directing debut. They've both 

been attached to the reboot for several 

years. McQuoid has some experience 

with games-related projects. He 

directed a fun PS3 ad featuring 

a parade of famous PlayStation 

characters several years back. 

Given the previous movies didn't 

exactly bowl over critics in the '90s, 

McQuoid's take perhaps doesn't have 

the highest of bars to overcome to 

enshrine itself as the best film in the 

series. With the games still thriving 

-- Mortal Kombat 11 arrived just last 

month -- and the 25th anniversary of 

the first Mortal Kombat movie coming

Kangana Ranaut’s sister files 

‘assault, exploitation’ complaint 

against Aditya Pancholi, he files 

counter complaint 

Rangoli Chandel, actor Kangana 

Ranaut’s sister, has filed an application 

before the Versova police station, stating 

her sister was exploited and abused by 

actor Aditya Pancholi at least a decade 

ago. Pancholi, in turn, has filed a counter 

application in the same police station, 

claiming Ranaut’s lawyer threatened to 

file a rape case against him. 

“We have asked both of them to record 

their statements. We will conduct an 

inquiry before registering an FIR,” said 

a senior officer from the police station. 

Ranaut, through several interviews 

in 2017, accused Pancholi of physically 

and sexually abusing her when she was 

new to the film industry. She alleged he 

kept her confined to the house and she 

had to escape by jumping off the firstfloor 

window. After the allegations, 

Pancholi filed a defamation case 

against Ranaut. 

Pancholi, on Tuesday, said: “Reacting 

to the defamation case, Kangana, 

Rangoli and their lawyer, Rizwan 

Siddique, decided to file the complaint. 

Siddique even threatened me with a 

rape case on January 6, 2019.” 

Pancholi claimed he had a number 

of videos and phone recordings that 

purportedly show Siddique threatening 

him. His statement was recorded on 

Sunday. “I submitted my application 

with the police against Siddique, 

Kangana and Rangoli earlier this 

month. I have submitted the video in 

the police station and court. Rape is the 

worst kind of crime that can happen [to 

any woman],” he said.

Rajnikanth! 

Akshay Kumar who plays a villain in 

Rajnikanth's next movie 2.0 has reportedly 

charged more than the superstar 

Rajnikanth himself. The news has been 

confirmed by Bollywood trade experts and 

Filmfare magazine. Akshay Kumar has 

charged Rs 2 crore per day for the shoot 

of Enthiran's sequel 2.0. Akshay has been 

paid a higher amount for his Tamil debut 

in Shankar's mega budget movie. 

Robot 2 or 2.0, an upcoming Indian 

Science Fiction film is produced 

by Lyca Productions and directed 

by Shankar. The film stars Akshay 

Kumar, Amy Jackson and Rajnikanth. 

2.0 is the most expensive film ever 

produced in India. A.R. Rahman has 

composed the music of the film. 2.0 is 

stated to release on Diwali this year. 

Lyca Productions, the producers of 

Enthiran 2.0, were initially planning

Schwarzenegger but later Akshay 

Kumar was finalised. 

Rajnikanth's amount has not been 

confirmed yet but looking at his previous 

two films, Lingaa and Kochadhiiyaan, 

which did not work well at the box-office, 

it seems like Rajnikanth took a lower 

package for the film. In 2010, Rajnikant 

was paid Rs. 50 crore for the Tamil 

blockbuster. Robot was made at a budget 

of Rs. 200 crores while the budget off its 

sequel is a whopping 400 crores.

Deepika Padukone, who was in New 

York to attend the MET Gala 2019, paid 

a visit to Rishi Kapoor during her visit. 

The 66-year-old actor has been 

undergoing treatment for cancer in 

New York since September last year. 

Neetu Kapoor shared images from 

the visit on her Instagram account.

Mumbai, May 2: Two trains on Konkan 

railway line will get new and improved 

coaches from June. According to a 

report published in Hindustan Times, 

The Konkan Kanya Express and the 

Mandovi Express plying between 

Mumbai and Goa will get improved 

German-designed coaches. Linke 

Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches will 

replace the older coaches made at the 

Integrated Coach Factory (ICF) in 

Chennai from June 10. Tejas Express 

Cuts Down Travel Time Between 

Mumbai And Goa by 30 Minutes; Train 

to Run at Speed of 120 Kms/hr. 

The seats in the new coaches will also 

be increased from 72 to 80. According to 

the report, the LHB coaches are made of 

stainless steel and aluminium which are 

lighter than ICF coaches. “The hydraulic 

shock absorber and improved suspension 

system of LHB coaches ensure greater 

riding comfort for the passengers,” 

reported Hindustan Times quoting LK 

Verma, chief spokesperson of Konkan 

Railway as saying. The new coaches 

will also have a modular interior with 

integrated ceiling lights and luggage 

racks. Tejas Express Set to Run With New 

'Saffron' Look, CCTVs in Each Coach. 

Last month reports also surfaced 

that the Deccan Queen, which operates 

between Mumbai and Pune, will also 

get LHB coaches by the end of the 

year. The Central Railway had also

blind tourists get unique 

experience at Colva beach 

COLVA: For many, a trip to Goa is 

one of the things to check off on a 

bucket list. But for a group of visually 

impaired men, a long cherished dream 

was finally fulfilled. 

The unique tourists were from 

Muncherjee Nowrojee Banajee Industrial 

Home for the Blind, that is funded by the 

National Association for the Blind. 

The home annually organises such 

tours and this year the inmates had 

expressed their desire to visit Goa. 

"We had only heard about Goa. With 

this tour, we learnt, felt and saw Goa. Our 

dream is fulfilled," said Sunil Wankade 

and Veynath, who are both blind. 

While Wankade works at a bank as a 

screen reader trainee with special software 

(JAWS - Jobs Access with speech), Veynath 

dabbles in the share market. 

The home was established in 1956, 

says manager Mayank Shekar, and 

the institute serves as a residence and 

training centre, where the blind can 

receive residential, industrial and 

vocational training to develop their skills 

that will enable them to secure jobs. 

At present, there are 80 blind inmates 

who are imparted training in various 

vocational streams such as tailoring, 

caning and weaving furniture, candle 

making and even computer training for 

four years, free of cost. 

They are even provided financial 

help to set up their own startups after 

training, says Shekar. Those inmates 

who are employed pay a monthly fee of 

Rs 1,200 towards food expenses.

iPhone game, but it turns out that this 

wasn't just empty banter -- the game 

is real. Apple has released a Warren 

Buffett's Paper Wizard title for iPhones 

that has you tossing papers (much like 

Buffett did as a child) to earn "Warren 

Bucks" based on your delivery skills. 

Think of it as a first-person, touchscreen 

Paperboy for would-be billlionaires. 

The title is credited to "Wildlife 

Designs" in the App Store, but the splash

your furry friends 

In this searing heat, furry friends are counting on the 

warmth of your heart to help them stay cool 

Delhi’s unforgiving summer heat is 

already setting in, and one can already 

estimate just how hot it is going to get 

in the coming months. While we still 

might have roofs over our heads and 

ACs to cool us down, our furry friends 

roaming the streets won’t really have 

that luxury. But, fret not, there’s a 

lot you can do to help them out and 

ensure that they do not have to face the 

summer sun alone. Just follow these 

simple tips and give stray dogs and cats 

the ‘coolest’ summer experience. 

Setup a summer shelter 

Stray shelters can’t be the same for 

every season, especially summer. 

While plastic and mattress lined 

shelters work best for cooler months, 

you will need to build cooler and more 

spacious shelters for summer months. 

“Use a khus chataai (grass mat) as the 

lining and floor for the shed and use 

materials like cardboard and cloth 

for the walls of the shelter. Make sure 

your shelter is placed in a cool spot 

and is spacious so that it doesn’t trap 

heat. You can also add damp towels 

and sheets to cool them down during 

the afternoon hours,” says Shiven 

Budhiraja, an animal rights activist. 

Keep plenty of water around 

It is easy for animals to get dehydrated 

when it is too hot, so always keep 

water out for them. It is best to use 

terracotta bowls for drinking water as 

they remain cooler than others, and 

you could also add a cool stone in it to 

keep it cooler for long. Make sure you 

regularly clean and change the water 

to avoid waterborne infections and 

always avoid adding extremely chilled 

water too. 

Feed ‘em right 

It is very important to give your 

furry friends the right nutrition, 

and fruits are an easy and delicious 

meal for them. “Choose watermelons, 

muskmelons, cucumber, tender 

coconut or other hydrating fruits as 

they are not too heavy for the strays 

and also help maintain the water 

balance. Avoid leaving milk for them 

as it tends to get bad in summers very 

quickly. There are a variety of summer 

foods for dogs and cats available in 

stores that you can choose from too,” 

says Shweta Rohilla, a member of 

DoggoDuty. 

Clip the coats 

Ask your vet if a stray needs their coats 

clipped for summer. Heavy coats can 

often be a huge problem during high 

temperatures and can be responsible 

for a heat stroke too. Some strays 

might also require sunscreen to protect 

their skin if they have a short coat. 

Watch out for burns and infections 

It is easy for strays to burn their paws 

while walking on hot asphalt outside, 

so always keep a lookout for signs of 

burns and treat them with the right 

ointments. You could also take the 

stray to a vet once in a while so ticks, 

fleas and heartworm do not become 

an issue. “You can also purchase cool 

powders and oils and massage your 

stray’s coat and paws with it. It’ll keep 

them cool and infections free,” says 

Rohilla.

great hit with consumers everywhere.

with customisable food experiments.

TikTok overtakes 

Facebook as most 

downloaded app 

According to market intelligence firm 

Sensor Tower, TikTok recorded its 

best first quarter yet for new users 

in the quarter ended March, with 188 

million new installs between January 

1 and March 31. That's a whopping 

70% increase year-on-year. On its blog, 

the app analytics platform added that 

TikTok's growth was "largely driven 

by India, where an estimated 88.6 

million new users flocked to the app", 

posting an over eight-fold increase over 

the same quarter last year. So India 

accounted for over 47% of its downloads 

in Q1. In comparison, TikTok added 

approximately 13.2 million new users in 

the United States during the period, up 

2.8 times over Q1 FY18. 

Facebook, which is also used 

extensively on the desktop, came in 

second with 176 million new downloads 

in the same period, The Economic 

Times reported, adding that the largest 

chunk (21%) came from India. At the 

end of 2018, Facebook had been the most 

downloaded application globally.
