The year 1889 was an eventful one: the construction
of the Eiffel Tower was the crowning
glory of the Paris World Exposition, the
Moulin Rouge opened its doors, Gustav Mahler
wrote his 1 st Symphony and the Edelweiss
welcomed its first guests.

Prof. Auguste Piccard, 1931

THE CENTRE OF PUBLIC ATTENTION
The emergency landing of Prof. Auguste Piccard‘s
stratospheric balloon made Obergurgl famous
overnight. Journalists laid siege to the little
village to report the event on the Gurgler Ferner
glacier. The Swiss scientist gave his interviews
from the Edelweiss. The Piccard Suspension
Bridge is a memorial to the 27 th of May 1931.
In 2017 the 142 meter long crossing was opened
to foot traffic after a year under construction.

Erich Scheiber led the hotel into a new era.
The indoor pool was opened in 1978 and has
been continuously expanded to become an oasis
of well-being. The Glacier SPA and outdoor

CLUB HISTORY
The Obergurgl Ski Club has been a training
ground for successful ski racers since its
foundation in 1911. Edelweiss & Gurgl is a
hotel with a long tradition closely bound to the
history of the ski club. And it‘s also of international
significance – the US ski team regularly
trains here to get into Olympic shape.

Ramolhaus, 1881

FROM MOUNTAIN VILLAGE
TO HOLIDAY PARADISE
In 1881 Martin Scheiber – a brilliant alpinist
– laid the foundation stone for tourism
in Obergurgl when he established the first
refuge hut in the Ötztal valley. Ever since, the
Ramolhaus has been sitting proud at 3,006
meters. Under commission from the Alpine
Club, he planned further accommodation.

Built as a refuge hut, the Ramolhaus sits like
an aerie above the tongue of the Gurgler
Ferner Glacier. From June to the end of September,
the hut keepers serve up delicious
highlights of Tyrolean cuisine. The panoramic
terrace offers a breathtaking view
across the magnificent mountain scenery of
the Ötztal Alps.
New, quaint, modern – the Zirbenalm is the place
to be in Obergurgl. Situated right on the piste and
only 15 minutes from the hotel, a rustic hut with a
modern twist awaits. In the open kitchen the chef
prepares traditional family recipes, spiced with a
pinch of zeitgeist. Enjoy this unique mountain style
as you swing in at the end of your run, enjoy an
afternoon snack or some apres-ski.

World Cup Feeling
guaranteed.
The start house instead of the finish area, the piste rather than the car park, ski boots not moon boots – the
unique Audi quattro Ski Cup offers amateur skiers a stage normally graced only by World Cup professionals.
Things launch off onto the slopes at the beginning of December 2017 in Obergurgl.
After its great success last season with over 3,000 participants in
the Alpine countries, the Audi quattro Ski Cup will also take place
across 2017/18. There ambitious amateur skiers will be able to
experience the intense excitement of a World Cup run – with a
specially constructed start house like those seen on TV, professionally
prepared slopes, modern timekeeping technology, and an
enormous finishing arch. Just like the World Cup then.
All amateur skiers aged 18 or above who can negotiate a red
piste are invited to take part in the qualification races that are
set up as a giant slalom run. In order to be able to offer a fair
amateur skiing race event, (former) ski instructors and FIS point
holding skiers are excluded from the ranking. Every amateur skier
will have the opportunity to qualify for the grand final at the
end of March 2018 in Kitzbühel.

The Audi quattro Ski Cup gets underway between the 1st and 3rd
December 2017 in Obergurgl. All of Audi’s partners will be giving
everything they’ve got to make the event a success: the experts
from the Obergurgl Ski School will be supervising the participants
and giving them valuable tips and advice on the pistes, increasing
speed, and equipment. The Hotel Edelweiss & Gurgl, as well as
The Crystal Hotel, will ensure restful nights before the big day. The
Ski-Club Gurgl, together with the Audi Team, is responsible for the
organisation and professional running of the skiing race. The lift
company Obergurgl will bring the participants to the start point.
Audi driving experience @ Obergurgl
The professional experience is not only to be had on two skis, but
also on four wheels. As part of the Audi quattro Ski Cup, the Audi
driving experience @ Obergurgl will take place from the 30th November
to the 3rd December 2017. Drivers can test the latest Audi
quattro models with professional guidance from expert driving instructors
in the car park immediately adjacent to Audi’s partner hotel,
the Edelweiss & Gurgl, and will experience first hand that driving
fun and safe driving are not mutually exclusive. Furthermore,
there will also be an Audi driving experience event @ Obergurgl
during the “Audi White Carpet Day” from the 18th to the 22nd
