Queer Eye ran for five successful seasons. 

It’s hard to believe that it’s been sixteen years How do you reflect on the show and that era? 

since I first met Jai Rodriguez in the patio of

Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast 

The event seeks to bring together all who 

support equality and justice to celebrate the 

memory of this influential civil rights activist. 

Presented by: Lead organizers Greater Palm 

Springs Pride, Equality California Palm 

Springs, and The Desert AIDS Project and the 

Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast Coalition. 

When he was elected to the San Francisco 

Board of Supervisors in 1977, Harvey Milk 

(1930- 1978) became one of the first openly 

gay men to be elected to political office in 

the United States. On election night, Harvey 

Milk reminded his supporters: “This is not 

my victory – it’s yours. If a gay man can win, 

it proves that there is hope for all minorities 

who are willing to fight.” He was assassinated

Veterans Affairs 

The navy makes headway with more 

gay history! 

In 2016, the then Secretary of the Navy 

Ray Mabus officially announced that 

three naval vessels would be named after 

Murray-Ramirez explains the shipbuilding 

process in a quote to San Diego Gay and 

Lesbian News. 

"There are three official ceremonies for a 

building of a ship," he explains. "One, the 

official first cutting of the steel ceremony. 

Two, the keel laying ceremony and three, 

the official christening of the ship." 

Harvey Milk is known mostly for his 

activism in the San Francisco Bay area as 

a politician, but he also has a connection 

to San Diego. He was stationed here in the 

1950s while serving in the Navy.

include Congressman John Lewis, gay 

rights activist and politician Harvey Milk, 

and U.S. Senator Robert Kennedy. 

City Commissioner Nicole Murray- 

Ramirez who, with the International 

Imperial Courts Council led the successful 

national letter-writing campaign to name 

a Navy ship after gay politician and LGBT 

activist Harvey Milk. That ship, a Military 

Sealift Command fleet oiler, will also be 

constructed in San Diego. 

Commissioner Ramirez, who also serves 

on the National Board of the Harvey Milk 

Foundation, has been speaking with Navy 

brass and Nassco President Kevin Graney 

concerning the upcoming ceremonies and 

christening for the USNS Harvey Milk. 

Other names in the class include former 

Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren 

whose court ruled to desegregate U.S. 

schools, former Attorney General Robert 

F. Kennedy, women’s right activist Lucy 

Stone and abolitionist and women’s rights 

activist Sojourner Truth.

Today the Harvey Milk Breakfast again 

smashed the glitter ceiling with approximately 

1000 in attendance.

gay people young and old. It is likely that kids 

getting inspired today will become the LGBT 

leaders of tomorrow and they will be the bridge 

between the gay leaders of today with the gay 

leaders of the past. 

From a small dedicated group, now a significant 

moment not only in Pam Springs, but new 

cities every year. It has become bigger, not 

better. This event is where the boots really 

meet the ground. We are reaching schools and 

offering a better choice to nurture and educate 

our society because some time in the future, 

society will reflect them. 

While I am an annual sponsor, I was also a 

beneficiary of groups and organizations like 

this, as I expect many marginalized people 

often are. 

I was not fortunate to have many role models 

in my life or even spirituality. I learned by the 

bitter lumps of experience and by not wanting 

to be like most of the people in my world. 

There was no escaping my world either. I had 

to endure it and find a way to continue on. 

Because some people saw reason to make the 

lives of some people like me better, I survived 

and I thrived and I gave back. Those people 

up on the stage where not looking down at us, 

they where thanking us for our support we

think that was a giant step forward in terms of 

LGBTQ+ acceptance, 

but we still have an incredibly long way to go. 

Do most people realize that way before Queer 

Eye, you played ‘Angel’ in RENT when you were 

eighteen years old? 

Most people don’t know that Netflix’s Queer 

Eye is a reboot lol. I did RENT for five years 

and Queer Eye for three. To me, I’ll always be 

that boy from RENT. I did host the RENT 

LIVEscreening as Angel in Weho. It was fun 

throwing on the look 21 years later. Mama still 

got it. 

You are involved with Positively Fearless, a HIV 

advocacy organization. Tell me about that. 

The movement is about being fearless about 

keeping yourself safe, staying healthy if you’re 

positive and empowering everyone to remove 

the stigma around HIV. Even with PrEP 

and knowing that U = U (undetectable = un 

transmittable) there are people who still see 

positive people as other. When my aunt passed 

from AIDS related complications in the 90’s I 

knew I would make it my life’s mission to not 

let her passing be in vain. That’s why I’m an 

advocate for the HIV community. 

Tell me about your talk show, The Morning 

Beat, on Channel Q. 

I host on air with Mikalah Gordon (American 

Idol). She’s a lesbian and I’m queer, (but really 

she’s more of a drag queen and I’m an old 

man). It’s a funny mixture of talk radio and 

great music. We laugh a lot. I get a lot of DMs 

and texts saying “you guys are killing me this 

am”). We like to think of our hours on air as 

a party with a purpose. We cover informative 

stories that impact the community while also 

keeping it fun with games, give-away’ s and 

celebrity interviews. 

Channel Q is a new source for LGBTQ+ talk, 

news and music across the nation. How is it 

being part of this new queer network? 

It’s been really remarkable to launch this 

alongside our other radio fam. KROQ, JACK 

FM, AMP Radio, The Wave, etc. are all on 

our floor. There were only a small handful of 

LGBTQ employees at the company until we 

showed up. I’ve been amazed at how warmly 

we’ve been accepted by the sister stations. 

Even in this era of post-marriage equality and 

on the 50th anniversary of Stonewall, LGBT 

media is as important as ever. How do you 

see your role within Channel Q in regards 

to all the important conversations that are 

happening? 

I’m in control of the narrative. Finally. My 21+ 

years of working in entertainment and being a 

go-to person to tell LGBTQ+ stories through 

my work is now broadened. I get to give my 

opinion and tackle topics I previously might 

have been fearful to unpack. At Channel Q we 

are giving everyone in our community a voice 

and aren’t afraid to take our adversaries to task. 

Name three persons that you would like to 

have on The Morning Beat that you haven’t had 

yet. 

J-Lo (she’ll be 50 I’ll be 40 a week a part in 

June). She was a big Queer Eye fan and it 

would be cool to reconnect. 


Gaga. Feels weird we HAVEN’T had her on yet 

since she’s such an advocate for the community. 

Plus, I’m in the “Telephone” music video so 

that’s my in - lol. 

Cher. Cause, c’mon it’s Cher. 

Bonus folks would be Michelle Obama and

I’ll be guesting on a new Hulu comedy called 

Doll Face opposite Kay Dennings. I’ll also be 

hosting two one-hour specials for Lifetime’s hit 

series Dance-Mom’s and I’ll be on season four 

of Eastsiders.

We are headed toward a Presidential 

campaign soon. Does anyone stand out from 

the rest at this point? 

Mayor Pete. I JUST saw speak him at The 

Abbey. I’m keeping my eye on him. I really like 

Kamala Harris as well but I’m holding out until 

the debates and when people start rolling out 

policy before I make firm decisions. 

Aside from Positively Fearless, what are some 

other charities and causes that are important 

to you? 

I’m currently in San Francisco doing an event 

for EQCA. I think the work they do is so vital. 

I love Lambda Legal and the great Legal work 

they do for the LGBTQ+ community. GLAAD 

Has helped me when my character was 

misgendered on a TV series. They’re statement 

of “words and images matter” is something I 

couldn’t agree more with. Of course the Trevor 

Project is always on my mind with the high 

number of LGBTQ suicides. It’s hard not to be 

thankful we have them making a difference. 

But then my mind goes to FREE MOM HUGS 

and brave faith-based organizations who are 

PRO LGBTQ. We need more of that.

DON BACHARDY 

Don Bachardy was the partner 

of British Author, Christopher 

Isherwood, from 1953 to 

Ishwerwood's death in 1986. They 

met on the beach in Santa Monica 

in 1953. Isherwood was a successful 

writer and co-writer with authors 

such as Truman Capote and Aldous 

Huxley. His early stories about WW 

II inspired "Cabaret", the musical and 

movie. He had come to the United 

States during WWII after leaving 

Germany prior to the war. 

Don Bachardy was only 18 when 

he met Isherwood who was 48. 

Isherwood was a compelling influence 

on Bachardy's aspirations to be an 

artist. He was asked by the Desert 

Sun Outlook Magazine in 2015 

about Isherwood's influence on his 

artistic career. He answered, " ..In 

every way possible. I never would 

have the nerve, the courage to be 

an artist, even think of myself as an 

artist without his encouragement 

and support. At that time I was 

doing drawings of movie stars from 

photographs. It was at that time that 

Chris asked have you ever worked 

from life?" I said no and he said "If

you would like to try, I will sit for 

you" and that is what got me going." 

Since that time Don Bachardy has 

competed paintings and drawings of 

numerous celebrities. He completed 

a painting of former governor, Gerry 

Brown, which hangs in the capital 

building in Sacramento. 

Bachardy admitted that he is nervous 

when painting celebrities, indicating 

that getting them to sit for him for 

long periods of time is usually most 

challenging. His work has been 

primarily of face portraits however, 

Don said that the suggestion of doing 

nudes came from Theresa Russell and 

Teri Garr who suggested themselves 

that he do a nude painting of them. 

Since Don has completed many full 

body nude paintings of celebrities and 

non celebrities both male and female. 

His work has a simplicity about it that 

is an aspect of the uniqueness. He 

does not work from photographs or 

preliminary drawings only directly 

from the model posing.

documentary, "Chris and Don: A Love 


Story"vSeveral books on Bachardy's 

work have been published, including:

THE LAST WORD 

Lets be clear, illegal unsafe abortion 

is the termination of a pregnancy by 

people lacking the necessary skills, or in 

an environment lacking minimal medical 

standards, or both. Some states have 

proposed a ban on all abortions. Anyone 

old enough to remember the trauma that 

faced a pregnant family member knows 

that people, especially young people, are 

going to get an abortion as sure as a family 

will risk separation. 

All unsafe abortions are life-threatening 

procedures. It includes self-induced 

abortions, abortions in unhygienic 

conditions, and abortions performed by a 

medical practitioner who does not provide 

appropriate post-abortion medical care. 

About 25 million unsafe abortions 

occur a year, of which most occur in the 

developing world. 

But somehow, we have a faction in this 

nation that think it's wrong and should be 

against the law. 

They have only a pagan idol on their side. 

They feel that gay marriage is the slippery 

slope of letting women choose. 

The US Supreme Court has declared 

abortion to be a “fundamental right” 

guaranteed by the US Constitution. The 

landmark abortion case Roe v. Wade, 

decided on Jan. 22, 1973 in favor of 

abortion rights, remains the law of the 

land. The 7-2 decision stated that the 

Constitution gives "a guarantee of certain 

areas or zones of privacy," and that "This 

right of privacy... is broad enough to 

encompass a woman's decision whether or 

not to terminate her pregnancy." 

You and everyone I know, counts the day 

your were born, not when it is embryos or 

independent, self-determining beings. 

Abortion then is the termination of a 

pregnancy, not a baby. A person's age is 

calculated from birth date, not conception, 

and fetuses are not counted in the US 

Census. The majority opinion in Roe v. 

Wade states that "the word 'person,' as 

used in the Fourteenth Amendment [of 

the US Constitution], does not include the 

unborn." 

So why so much energy now? It's very 

likely that the GOP now thinks the tide has 

turned them in 2018 losing the House. It is 

all bluster now because they are losing in 

every poll across the nation while Trump 

jumps with glee for every percent in his 

high disapproval rating. 

Someone is fueling hate and sewing the 

venomous seeds of division. It could even 

be the devil himself. 

I don't think it is the rich hating the poor 

or the poor hating the rich. It may be the 

poor hate the poor and the rich hate the 

rich. 

But its more likely the result of poor 

education, employment equality. One thing 

for-sure, it is creating frustration in a large 

group of liberal people that seek justice.
