fig.1.5 Chapel of the Holy Sacrifice Locsin became well known after the emergence of the third generation of architects during the 1950s. And up to that point, nobody has really answered the question of ‘What is Philippine architecture?' In 1955, the Church of the Holy Sacrifice also called as ‘the flying saucer’, the architect’s first project was built. The dome like structure that encapsulates the complexity of the Philippines’ colonial past and seen as a modernist expression received a lot of love from people around the world. 15 The design’s floating quality reminded fellow architects and architecture enthusiast of the Nipa Hut, although originally a Malay influence was one of the country’s traditional houses. 16 It is a house built above water using stilts of wood on all edges as a support. fig.1.6 Traditional Bahay Kubo, 1989 A duality formed through a series of horizontal or vertical slicing 17 creating an illusion of a floating volume kept reappearing in his works after his initial project. These include the Davao Insular Hotel (1961), Manila Memorial Park Chapel (1965), Locsin Building (1966), Hyatt Regency Hotel (1967) and Church of Saint Andrew (1968). And on one interview, Locsin said ‘at the time I was designing the theatre (The Theatre of Performing Arts) I was obsessed with massive forms. I wanted something that was massive yet light. Two things might sound contradicting but I felt we could do something that would not be overbearing. It has to have a certain floating feeling.’ 18 1n 1969, the Theatre of Performing Arts was built, becoming the peak of the paradoxical architectural language the Filipino architects were trying to pursue – A traditional yet contemporary approach to design which adapts to our geography, climate and culture.
