PERFORMING AT FRISKY
PARTY NYC - JUNE 28TH
Alluring, Brazilian singing sensation
Nikki Valentine (known as Nikki) is an
effervescent bundle of vibrant talent
and sensuous excitement. One of the
finalists on “The Voice Brasil,” Nikki
sings at huge circuit parties and has
been invited to sing at New York during
World Pride this year. Best known
for her electronic music and her selfwritten
song “Cha Cha Boom,” she
has performed at The Week, one of
the most grandiose clubs in the world,
made her U.S. debut last year at the
White Party and has already performed
at World Pride in Madrid.
With nearly more social media followers
than God, she quickly made her way
in the hearts of the gay community
globally. Her excitement and her love
from the community is genuine. I spoke
with Nikki and fell in love with her
instantly.
What do you have planned
coming up for the next couple of
months?
First of all, I’m very excited to be
in New York for the very first time
for New York Pride. Next month
I should go to Brazil; there is
Carnival. I must go there to visit my
family, and then when I come back
I have a show here in Los Angeles.
Then in April I’m going to Europe
on my European tour, and then I’m
going to Bangkok. It will be the
first time I will be in Asia. I will be
doing the biggest party in Bangkok
called Songkran. It’s going to be
amazing. I am filled with new places
to perform, and I’m so excited. I will
be in Bangkok for the first time, and
that will be April 13. I think I will stay
the whole month of April in Europe
and hopefully will be booking
something in Portugal and Paris,
but they are not confirmed. Also,
the last weekend in April I have the
White Party in Palm Springs. I’m
going to perform there as well.

So you are actually performing at
World Pride in New York?
Yes, and I’m so, so excited about that.
I’m so proud, because two years ago
the World Pride was in Madrid, and
that was my debut in Madrid. I did
two shows in Madrid for World Pride.
So being in World Pride for New York,
I feel very happy to be part of this
event.
I think you are massively popular
with all those hot gay men in your
videos.
Oh, I love them. I live for them. I
always say that I’m a gay man stuck in
a woman’s body.
I always say that too.
Then we are sisters.
We are! Are you planning to visit
Fire Island?
I’ve never been there, but I think it
would be so fun!
I just came to the U.S. one year
ago, so I’m still finding out
different places.
You were a finalist on “The
Voice” in Brazil?
Yes, I was! It was so cool. It
was a beautiful moment in my
career. I was already doing gay
festivals all over Brazil, and
outside as well. When I did
“The Voice,” all kinds of people
knew me: old ladies, the little
girls, because my hair was pink.
The little girls wanted my hair. It
was so nice. I went to the finals,
so I spent like three months
really getting experience to
be in a reality show—to be
nervous, to have all the pressure
of being in a competition, to
have to prove myself every
week. It was super fun, and I got
so much out of that experience.
It was very good for my career.
We really are sisters, because
I have pink hair too. You have
done a lot and will be doing a
lot. Is there anything that you
wish to do along the way?
Oh, there’s so many things that
I didn’t do yet. I want to travel
to all of the places and do all of
the gay festivals and all of the
gay prides in the world. I want
to go to Tel Aviv Pride, because
I have so many friends there
like Eliad Cohen, who owns the
PAPA Party. So I’m really willing
to go to Tel Aviv Pride. Also,
I’ve never been to Australia,
so I think it would be amazing
to go there. There is so many
places that I haven’t gone to
yet. I haven’t gone to Italy, I still
haven’t gone to Germany, so I
have so many places to go, so
many festivals to do. I want to
be everywhere. I love traveling. I
love being surrounded by these
amazing people; they are so fun
and so happy.

It’s not only about the parties, but
showing the message of love, and
just to be together with people
who love music.
You write your own songs as
well?
Yes, I write my own songs. I started
to write when I was very, very
young. I always like writing English,
and I like electronic music. In Brazil
it’s very hard for you to release a
song in English. When I started to
do my music in English, some of
the DJs started to listen, and they
offered to remix it. Suddenly I was
doing electronic music in clubs. I
didn’t expect that; it was a surprise
for me. I didn’t plan it, but it was
amazing. My biggest dream was to
play at The Week, which is one of
the biggest gay clubs
in the world. I love
the club, and it was
my dream one day to
perform there. Then
one day the owner of
The Week called me
said he listened to
one of my songs, and
then he asked me to
perform there. I was
shocked. It was my
dream to be there,
and I wondered what
would I be doing
next if this was my
first show. It was
super cool, and I
started to do a show
there every month.
They taught me so
many things. After
that I started to do
clubs and music all
over.
What a cool story.
It’s so exciting. So,
if you could say anything in the
world to your fans and followers,
what would that be?
I would say to keep being so happy
and keep making people so happy.
Despite all the problems that we
have, all the homophobic people,
all the laws that sometimes don’t
protect the gay people, despite all
of that, they are the most happy
people that I’ve ever met in my
life. That’s why I fell in love with
them, and that’s why I say that I
am a gay man in a woman’s body.
They make people happy. They
are always smiling. And if I could
say something, I would say keep
smiling, and I will keep doing my
songs for them, because I have so
much love for them, and they give
so much love back.
My Words on safeword.
When I first set out to write
safeword., my husband warned me that
I may be pigeonholing myself as the
playwright/director who only makes
work about sex. The truth is, safeword.
isn’t about BDSM, just as Afterglow
wasn’t about polyamory. Both plays
discuss those topics, but they are
ultimately plays about relationships.
While safeword. is an exploration of
power dynamics through BDSM and
food, it’s also about love - the love we
give give to each other and the love we
give to ourselves. BDSM is the device,
not the subject. This is a play about the
sacrifices we are willing (or unwilling) to
make for each other and for ourselves.
I’d be remiss to not mention the
extraordinary team that came together
to build this piece. Whereas Afterglow
was derived from my life experience,
safeword. is complete fiction. The team
was keenly aware of the necessity of
making this play as honest as possible.
I personally know a lot of people in the
kink community.
It is one of the most tender, loving,
and caring communities I have ever
encountered. It is also spectacularly
misunderstood, demonized, and,
ironically, fetishized. Popular culture
has not done the BDSM community
justice; most people’s exposure to it
has come through poorly researched
books and movies in which it is used
exclusively for its shock value and
whose creators clearly never bothered
talking to the very community they
were representing. In addition to doing
extensive and necessary research, many
members of our team are intimately
involved in the kink community; it was
important to all of us that we got this
one right. safeword. is a love letter to
the BDSM community.

Ultimately, all of us are looking for
someone else to publicly address the
things we privately explore. I remember
what shame feels like. I remember what
it feels like to not be proud of myself. I
know there are a lot of people who are
ashamed of parts of themselves they
should be proud of. I hope that these
plays foster dialogue about issues that
people are afraid to talk about.
I hope audiences glean a more nuanced
understanding of the world around them
from seeing this production. Ultimately,
I want audience members to leave the
theater and have a difficult conversation;
whatever that may be. We live in a time
in which the truth has been trivialized.
We sensationalize and tear each other
apart over minutiae; facts have become
irrelevant. The notion that the truth
doesn’t matter is terrifying. Honest
and open communication will be our
salvation.
I look forward to sharing this piece with
the world and cannot wait to hear the
conversations it inspires.
Flamingoes and Jockstraps
The other day, while my
boyfriend and I got frisky while
watching Netflix, I started to
think about all of the weird things
I’ve listened to while having sex.
It makes sense that you’d listen
to music, and I do, often. My goto
used to be “The XX,” low and
slow and sensual, even enough
that it’s not jarring when the next
track starts. Recently (mostly
because of my boyfriend and not
me) I’ll put on Troye Sivan. If my
boyfriend gets home from work
and I put on “Bloom,” he knows.
A lot of times we don’t put on
any music at all, left to fuck to the
sounds of the house: screams of
victory from our Call of Dutyplaying
roommate, construction
workers cat-calling each other
just below our window or the
upstairs neighbor playing scales
(and only scales) on their piano
for hours. It’s the piano playing
that drives me the most insane,
hearing scales ascend and descend again
and again and again while I’m trying to
give a blowjob.
Once, when I was 19 or 20, I had sex
with my then-fiancé in his parents’ house.
Their room was just across the hallway,
so we had to be completely quiet (not to
mention he forgot the lube, so we had to
get creative). Sex in silence, when you also
have to be silent, isn’t exactly my idea of a
great time.
If I’m totally, 100% honest, most of the
time I have sex to the sounds of my TV.
I’ve fucked to “Bob’s Burgers” enough
times that I get a tingle at the mere
thought of a ma and pa burger joint (just
kidding) (mostly), and “American Dad”
should probably be paying me royalties at
this point.
It’s easy to have sex to TV shows like that;
they’re just simple background noise, not
to be given any attention. But the night in
question, when my boyfriend got frisky, we
were watching “Our Planet” on Netflix.
We’d just turned it on; James wanted to
see it since it came out, and after
seeing how beautiful the fish looked
in the trailer, I was intrigued. I guess
I thought it would be like a Discovery
Channel special, filled with pretty
images of pretty animals doing pretty
things, giraffes grazing and penguins
falling down and the like.
James was giving me a massage,
and had just gotten my pants down
(revealing a jockstrap underneath)
when the narrator started talking
about flamingos. I looked up to see
a baby flamingo, all alone, struggling
to walk with salt deposits solidified
around its feet and legs. Because of
the deposits, it couldn’t keep up with
the rest of the flock.
PHOTO: STEVE BRENNAN
I sat up, erection gone completely.
“Let’s watch this later,” I said,
switching back to “Bob’s Burgers.” I
was erect again in five minutes, only
faltering for a moment when I looked
over at our Kate Spade flamingo
pillows. I turned the pillows around
and took off my jockstrap.
