Founder's Message
Dear Readers,
I've find that being able to rise above all the drama that
happens in community living is essential in order to allow
everything to natuarally fall into place.
So now we have a name change to 'Community Living'
emazine. We've gone through an upgrade and are now
focusing on readers who are interested in living healthy
lives, and co-creating abundance and sharing it in the
community. Valencia will lead the way, and we will also be
including stories from time-to-time from other inspiriing
communities around the world.
FOSTERING ANIMALS OUT
OF SHELTERS
As we know, there is a real problem with
animal well-being in Spain and that is
also true for dogs and cats in the city of
Valencia. By fostering an animal out of a
shelter, you do your share by freeing up
some valuable space and resources so
that the shelter can welcome more
animals in need.
THE RISE OF CLIMATE
CHANGE ANXIETY
Experts have predicted, that by 2050,
the amount of plastic in the ocean will
weigh more than the amount of fish in
the ocean. Climate change anxiety as a
term is relatively new. It is described
as an anxiety about the future and a
trauma we haven’t yet experienced but
we know is coming at some point.
This a fear about our survival.
ANIMAL
MAGIC!
Above: Toffee
It's a Cat's Life!
Written by Sandra
The colony is close, something akin to an extended
family. On a cool morning four or five adults snooze on,
all bundled up together. Toffee, Iggy and Panterita sit
together on the roof of their shelter, soaking up the
early rays. Cielito Lindo, the dominant male and the only
ex-domestic in the group, takes a walk with Sakura.
They rub bodies to transfer scent. There is little
aggression in this colony of some twenty feral cats;
1
friendships are nurtured and social routines respected.
More meerkat than feline, Sakura strikes a sentinel pose
at the merest hint of human intrusion, her pretty
head bobbing or cocked to one side. Running through
the grass in the large lot, she scampers and bounces,
light and bright as cherry blossom. Sakura is one of five
sterilised females.
Sterilise, neuter, spay—ugly, clinical words that can spark
emotional debate.
What happens when feral cats are left intact?
A quick search online produces many graphic
iterations of a popular but unsubstantiated claim
that a single breeding female will produce
30,000 to 370,000 cats in just seven years. More
reliably, a US study reported 1.4 litters per
season with an average of three kittens per litter,
while Celia Hammond in the UK provides a
simpler perspective: ‘a cat and a litter of kittens
can easily grow to a colony of fifteen to twenty
within a year and forty the next’ . 3
A female cat can reach puberty at just four
months of age. I learned this recently when
fostering two motherless siblings. This means
that a young queen 4can have her first litter at six
or seven 5months, when she is really no more
than a kitten herself. A sexually active female
can have two or even three litters in one season.
Even nursing mothers are not immune to
pregnancy. And with females going into heat
every two or three weeks from spring through to
autumn, there are plenty of opportunities for
resident and wandering tomcats.
This season in Valencia, we are seeing litters of
four or five. Clearly, not all kittens are female
and not all survive the first six months. Our own
calculations suggest a slightly lower rate of
expansion than Hammond’s, but a considerable
one nonetheless.
1 The colony was observed from an apartment overlooking
the vacant lots over a period of 7 months.
I T ' S A C A T ' S L I F E
What is the size of the problem?
In 2014, the RSPCA described the UK cat
population as being at ‘crisis point’. Here in
Spain, Alicante reports some 6,000 ferals,
while Barcelona recognises 700 colonies with
a population of 9,000. Valencia, counted 500
colonies or 12,000 individuals in 2016.
8
6
9
7
More recently, studies using computer models
have promoted the use of TVHR (trap–
vasectomy–hysterectomy–release) as an
alternative. With their sexual drive and social
status intact, the treated males continue to
defend their territory and ‘mate’ with the
colony’s females rather than leaving a vacuum
for wandering toms to take advantage. But this
11
What are the options for population
control?
Removing cats does not work. Other ferals
move in and take their place. 10Besides, even if
animal shelters had room for ferals, these
are outdoor cats. They hate to be confined
and most are too wild to be homed except as
farm cats. In the past, they were often
euthanized as a result. Trap–neuter–return
(TNR), now the preferred approach in many
communities around the world, more
humanely returns sterilised individuals to
their home territory and their kin. In Spain
this is known as CES (captura–esterilización–
suelta).
It’s also worth noting that owner reluctance
to sterilise domestic cats contributes greatly
to feral overpopulation as many kittens end
up being abandoned. The RSPCA report
advocates a 92% rate of domestic
has yet to be properly trialed and may not be
effective in urban neighbourhoods.
What’s in it for the cats?
Quite a lot, it turns out. Despite common
misconceptions, there is no scientific evidence
that neutering cats renders them more
susceptible to disease. On the contrary,
sterilised females and males are far less likely
to contract STDs and there is a reduced risk of
uterine, ovarian, breast and testicular cancers.
Repeat pregnancies with little time in between
are exhausting for queens. They can become
malnourished and diseased as their immune
systems are weakened by the physical toll of
gestation and nursing. Intact males—as their
human neighbours will readily attest—fight for
dominance. Many tomcats sustain injuries that
become infected, causing pain and suffering.
Territory, food and charity are finite resources.
Stabilising a feral population so that numbers
reduce over time means that cats are less likely
to starve or attract the wrong kind of attention.
12
sterilisation to maintain a stable population.

FOSTERING
Written by Celine and John - Postcards from Valencia

Looking for a way to do your part in making the world a better place? Fostering a
dog or cat is a great way to start.
By fostering an animal out of a shelter, you do your share by freeing up some
valuable space and resources so that the shelter can welcome more animals in need.
Some people think they should foster once they are ready to adopt. That is not the
case. Fostering can be for a short time and it plays such an important role in
successfully re-homing dogs and cats. You will be saving a life when you open up your
home. Fostered homeless dogs and cats learn what it’s like to be part of the family
which helps in finding their forever home.
One of the great benefits of fostering is the length of commitment. It’s up to you. For
some of the people I interviewed for this article, it seems to be quite a mix.
In the case of our friend Aj, someone reached out to her because they found 2
puppies in a bin. At the time, Aj was away skiing with her son in France but offered to
take over as soon as she was back home. She is a kind-hearted soul and committed to
keeping the puppies until they were at least 10 weeks old and ready to be adopted.
The puppies have become a wonderful addition to her home and The Art of English, a
school she runs in Xativa. On certain days, she brings the puppies to school where the
children learn to interact with them including feeding them with a baby bottle. Her
students learn about responsibility and gentleness along with learning English. For
Aj’s 7-year old son Taran, it has meant a new playmate along with the rest of their zoo
that includes a white German shepherd, 2 cats and a rabbit.
With our other friends, Wolfgang and Agata, someone must have known they love
animals because someone tossed 5 kittens into their garden along with some food.
Sadly, they couldn’t keep them because they too have a zoo that includes a large
shepherd dog, 2 cats and a turtle. Happily, they were able to find forever homes for
all 5.
Our other friend, Lisa, travels a lot for work and in spite of her busy schedule and
having 3 grown cats of her own, she somehow finds the time to volunteer at animal
shelters around the world…..wherever her work takes her. Whenever she travels, she
makes sure someone is available to look after her cats. As of this writing, she is
fostering 4 kittens until the middle of May. I asked her what fostering means to her
and she answered: “I love fostering and feel like it is my way of helping with the
irresponsibility of humans who do not get their animals spayed. It is so important to
spay your animals so they do not have more kittens or puppies.....there are too many
in the streets and many suffer or have to be euthanized in terrible circumstances.

Humans domesticate these animals and it is our responsibility to take care of
them. I am weary of people who only want a kitten and so we have to
interview them more than someone who wants an adult cat. I see so many
people dump their cat or dog for the most selfish of reasons (a vacation, the
pet gets big/older, etc.). There is a reliable website to get house-sitters to
stay with your pet if you go on a trip
(https://www.trustedhousesitters.com/house-and-pet-sitters/).”
So as you can see, fostering is a great way for people to experience what its
like to have an animal at home and vice versa. As a foster, you will learn
things about the dog/cat (sleeping habits or favorite toys) helps gives
potential adopters more information that can lead to better matches and
successful adoptions.
Also, staying in touch with the fostering contact to ensure that expectations
are met. An example could be the experience requirements for fostering a
special needs animal (i.e., do you have time and experience for a special
needs animal (kittens who need to be fed every 4 to 5 hours, dog that needs
socializing).
Ready to get started? Here are 2 puppies that will need a home…
Please note: children are not included
My own low waste journey started a few years back with the introduction of recycling bins in the UK.
At that time we were given one big blue bin from the local council and were told we could only recycle
paper, tins, foil and some plastic. This was revolutionary and it certainly made me start to think,
probably for the first time about what I was putting in my landfill bin.
Jump forward to 3 years ago when I was packing up my house and getting rid of a lot of “stuff” I’d
accumulated from a number of houses, 3 children and a lifetime of keeping stuff “just in case”.
So how easy was it, to get rid of all my stuff? Getting rid of all that stuff wasn’t that easy at all. I
recycled towels to the local homeless shelter and thought I could give them my lovely clean bedding.
But they weren’t allowed to take that.
I was finding it really difficult to get rid of those broken toys and little things that kids collect and
never play with. What on earth was I going to do? I took as much as I could to the local charity
collection and I then had to take stuff to the local tip. There they have skips where you can separate
the rubbish, but I was quite annoyed and worried seeing how much was going into landfill.
My husband and I lived on Ibiza for a couple of years and spent a lot of time on the beach. It wasn’t
unusual for us to pick up lots of rubbish and even whilst out kayaking, it was difficult to escape from
the floating bits of mainly plastic. So much so we would take out a fishing net and bucket to pick up
stuff as we paddled.
It’s only recently that I have reflected, that over the past few years I have developed worry about the
amount of plastic we use, landfill waste and how much people seem to care little about the
environment.
It got me thinking and I have started looking into Climate anxiety a bit more.
‘Climate change is here; it’s happening,” seems to be the overwhelming
sentiment. After yet another summer of heatwaves and historic wildfires,
devastating hurricanes, typhoons, and tsunamis, scientists are reporting rising
sea levels. Glaciers are melting at an alarming rate.
On hearing of these natural disasters people are describing ” a sense of loss,
sadness and anxiety”
more recently I have been doing my own little
Much
into just how much plastic we use. We recycle as
survey
as we can and its scary how much plastic there
much
We know this, don’t we? I’m using the “we” but
is.
how much does the average man or woman
actually
is really useful and we use it every day, but it’s
Plastic
estimated that more than five trillion pieces of
it to break down. Plastic isn’t biodegradable, it
for
break down and rot like paper or food. Each
400 million tonnes of plastic is produced and 40%
year,
that is single-use – plastic we’ll only use once before
it’s
horrific to think that more than eight million
It’s
of plastic enter the world’s oceans each year
most of that escape from the land. It can be blown
and
the sea from ships and beaches, or carried there
the river. People are still flushing plastic down the
40 years ago, when Valencia decided to create a beautiful garden
instead of a motorway…
Written by Laurence Lemoine
Once upon a time there was a
horrible motorway project that could
have existed in Valencia, but thanks
to good fairies, the projet was finally
abandoned. Instead, was born an
iconic park, the famous “Jardine del
Turia”, this beautiful “green flow” that
has become the lungs of the third
largest city in Spain and that
everyone envies.
The tale of the “Jardin del Turia” is a
tale that starts badly, but ends well!
It began with a river that regularly
overflowed during periods of heavy
rain, up to October 1957, when the
floods were more deadly than ever,
with a death toll of 81. This “riada”,
was one to many, this forced the
authorities of the time to make the
decision to divert the course of the
river to prevent it from going though
the city.
A completely new riverbed was
therefore built on the outskirts of
Valencia: which left, a dried up
riverbed, full of bad memories, a sort
of useless scar. It was necessary to
make something of this new space …
But what?
A 6-lane highway as the authorities of
the time wanted? A long and large green
park with playgrounds for the
population? … The debate was animated
and the mobilization and the obstinacy
of the inhabitants made the difference:
with the slogan, “the riverbed is ours
and we want it green”(” el cauce es
nuestro y lo queremos verde “) the civil
society has lobbied and obtained the
rejection of the highway project.
Thus, just 40 years ago, in 1979, in a
Spain that discovers democracy, the
mayor Ricardo Pérez Casado (1979-
1989), with a simple signature put an
end to years of uncertainties and
especially gave reason to the good
sense of a majority of valencianos.
What would Valencia be without its
famous “Rio Seco”?
40 years and a few million pesetas and
euros later, “el rio” or el “cauce” (the
riverbed del Turia) comes first place in
the ranking of the best parks in Spain
that Google has just published.
These 110 acres of green land, bike
paths, playgrounds, sports and
conviviality are simply unique in the
world and are now part of Valencia’s DNA.
Each year, 3 million people take advantage of
this Mediterranean vegetation composed of
olive, orange and palm trees, pines and
cypresses to mention only the most
noticeable since hundreds of plant species
cohabit harmoniously.
Between the decision in 1979 to make it a
green zone and the first shovel in 1986, many
political, financial and technical problems had
to be solved, but every year, stretch by
strecth, section by section, kilometer after
kilometer, the riverbed is also used as a
haven to build emblematic infrastructures
such as the Palau de la Musica, Gulliver Park,
and more recently the City of Arts and
Sciences, Opera or also Hemisferic …
There are still a few kilometers left to go, the
last, so that the 18 sections (a total of 12
kilometers are planned) are developed and
allow to connect Mislata to Nazaret … For
this, a few years and a handful of million
more euros will be needed, because it will be
necessary, among other things, to bury
railway tracks …
In the meantime, the spectacular park of
Valencia, whose existence seems obvious
today, continues to welcome enchanted
visitors who sometimes, even, do not know,
that not so long ago, a river ran through it.
Arrancapins … Do you know?
Written by Laurence Lemoine
Centric, but not over crowded, fashionable, but not (yet?) “Hipsterized” … This is Arrancapins, the urban area of Valencia that is
moving up, up, and up …
Spotlight on this “barrio” that is beginning to attract attention, because when it comes to Ruzafa, Ensanche, Cabanuyal and
Carmen they are not necessarily the most popular when you are looking for a neighborhood that is easygoing and not to hard
on the budget, and the wheel keeps turning … Today, this district located between the Gran Vía Fernando el Católico and the
Avenida Pérez Galdós (Extramurs district) evolves quietly, imposing itself as a lively, pleasant, cosmopolitan and practical
district, because perfectly connected by metro and buses. Unlike Ciutat Vella or Ruzafa, Arrancapins is not a victim of mass
tourism and offers a nice balance between family life, neighborhood life, shops, bars and restaurants, all near the center and the
famous “Rio Turia”, this riverbed diverted to become an 8 kilometers long park.
While randomly walking through the streets of this area you will be surprised by the number of bars and famous restaurants
found there! Starting with the famous Raussel (Calle Angel Guimera 61) celebrating its 70th anniversary, a bar of “toda la vida”
as they say here! Not far away, a good Basque restaurant, Easo Berri, honors Spanish cuisine as also do Orson, Cracovia, Paula’s
Taula or the famous Pamibori Tapas.
Among the hotspots, is the famous Abastos market, where there now is a sports center (with an indoor swiming pool), a police
station, a school and an annex of the town hall. Inaugurated in 1948, this market was an arrival and distribution platform for
fresh products for the whole city. Another interesting building is the famous “finca roja” located in Calle Jesus (not very far from
“Dulce de Leche” for true pastry lovers!), one of the emblematic building of Valencia, because besides its red-ocher color, and its
imposing facades, the “Finca Roja” completed in 1933 contains nearly 400 homes with a large community area in the center.
Arrancapins has a discreet charm, but is attracting more and more attention , proof of this is the steady rise in real estate prices,
both for renting and buying: the average price is 1,928€ per square meter, which is 5.85% more than 3 months ago, the price of
the average square meter, all areas combined, is established in the city of Valencia around 1 200 euros.
A lively Neighborhood and interesting by its geographical position almost strategic (nothing is far!) Arrancapins is begining,
slowly, but surely to make its place in the sun.
HYPERBARIC
OXYGEN THERAPY
I am always up for trying out New things and after a busy few weeks I
was feeling quite tired and my energy levels a bit depleted.
I had read and heard about Oxygen therapy and my first thoughts were I
bet it’s really expensive.
I got in touch with Delta 02 in Valencia and made an appointment. The
best way to fully experience the benefits of this therapy are to plan three
consecutive sessions.
I was really pleased to know that one hour in the chamber would be
equivalent to 4 hours sleep and as a fairly new second time Mum this
benefit alone was brilliant.
The Guys who run Delta 02 were really welcoming and even
accommodated me with Ethan (5 months)
After the first session I felt energized even an hour later. I slept deeper
that night and woke without that groggy feeling after waking a few times
in the night to breast feed Ethan.
Above: Emma Coyne after experiencing
oxygen therapy at Delta o2, Valencia.
The feeling stayed with me and after three sessions my skin was
glowing, I felt more relaxed and my energy had bounced back so much
so that at the end of the day when I normally fall into bed I could have
kept going.
So this definitely gets the thumbs up from me and when looking into the
benefits more I was really surprised how many people can benefit from
this..........

SPIRITUAL
GROWTH,
AWAKEING
AND
ASCENSION
BY RICH VOLLER

O W T O B E R I C H
H
This year I feel that everything is just naturally falling into place. I am
trusting more now in the Universe, as there seems to be some sort of
Divine Plan at play and it seems to have a better idea of what is going on.
Living at my Hapi Zen sanctuary (off grid) near the mountains of Chullilia, is
a perfect location for doing lots of writing, creating and planning... as well
as walking and gardening. I've just finished my new ebook and published it
online called 'How to Be Rich', it's about how to stand out from the crowd
and enjoy being yourself.
When you love being your Self, life becomes such an enjoyable experience
no matter what you are facing! Problems become challenges which you
know you can overcome. Life becomes a learning experience from which to
grow. And friendship evolves into a supportive, caring and thriving
community spirit.
So I thought that I would start writing this monthly blog and share with you
more insights into how I perceive reality, how I transform my reality
through positive thinking and how I get into action experiences special! So
let's dive straight in to what is happening with me at the moment.
Understanding the importance of negative energy
Quite often- I hear people who are on their spiritual journey saying that we
need to put our boundaries in place and disconnect from all negative
people. Well I think this is BS to be quite honest, because the truth is that
we all have negative and positive energy within us. Actually everyone of the
50 trillion cells in our body is negative on the inside and positive in the
outside (ref Dr. Bruce Lipton). Our body is actually like a battery. So we
have negative and positive energy within us, just like we all have a light side
and a dark side. Most of us just want to see the good things in us and don't
want to see our ugly side.
So when we get confronted with people who are angry, aggressive, rude
and abusive towards us, first you need to check-in with yourself. If I really
hate what I am seeing in them, then to me, that means that there is
something within me that I do not like and I am projecting it onto the other
person. So we become a mirror.
If on the other hand, I do not react to the person and just watch and
observe them, then I can tune into my own feelings and workout why
emotions have been triggered in me? And what I need to do to heal them
so I can release the uncomfortable energy from my body and return to a
place of harmony and balance. Or I might not feel anything and all I can
feel is love in the moment.

AWARENESS IS
KEY
So if we just accept them for being angry, abusive and rude towards
us, then we understand that actually their behaviour has nothing to
do with us. It is about the way they have been brought up and the
way that there groups of friends have allowed them to be, so they
think that there behaviour is OK towards everyone.
So once you are aware of certain types of behaviour, then you also
become aware of the 'mirror' and this then brings you into a place
of integrity. Because if you want to change things, then you have to
make sure that you are not doing the same thing that you don't like
to see in other people. That is why Ghandi said "Be the change you
want to see in the world." So first of all, if you want to change
anything in your life, then you have to be self-aware and start by
changing your self. We can't go around blaming other people for
our problems, we are adults and we need to behave like adults. So
first we need to tell people what is acceptable beaviour towards us
and what is not. Then if necessary take your distance, but leave the
door open so if they change they are Welcome back. We all deserve
another chance.
Our journey through life is not about how much money we can
make and how much material wealth we can accumulate, I have a
deep knowing that it is about the evolution of your soul. Every soul
has a different life purpose and a unique mission, together we are
all making up the Divine Plan.
Through walking your spiritual Path
you become more aware of your
personal connection with the
Universe and as you start to Awaken
you understand you are connected
with Source and that everything is
spiritual in its very nature!
