National reference in basketball, <strong>Mogi</strong> <strong>das</strong> <strong>Cruzes</strong> invests in sport<br />
as a tool for social transformation<br />
“We do not just invest in professional sports. The<br />
city also offers its residents free classes in more than<br />
30 different sports activities, ranging from children to<br />
seniors. There are thousands of <strong>Mogi</strong> <strong>das</strong> <strong>Cruzes</strong> citizens<br />
attending classes, held in parks, sports centers and other<br />
public spaces,” says Secretary Nilo Guimarães, who was<br />
a player of Brazilian Basketball Team.<br />

The city parks are an additional attraction. <strong>Mogi</strong> has<br />
the City Park, designed by the architect Ruy Othake,<br />
and Leon Feffer and Centenary parks. Together, the<br />
three parks receive nearly 15.000 people each weekend.<br />

The men’s basketball team is a national reference<br />
in the modality, with recent titles such as South<br />
American League and Paulista Championship. The<br />
love of <strong>Mogi</strong> <strong>das</strong> <strong>Cruzes</strong> population for their team is<br />
demonstrated in practice, with the best public average<br />
in NBB games, the main competition of the country<br />
in the modality.<br />
The City Hall support to the team happens with the<br />
availability of the Municipal Sport Gymnasium “Professor<br />
Hugo Ramos”, considered one of the main stages of Brazilian<br />
basketball and that has already received matches of the<br />
Brazilian National Team and events such as the Game of<br />
the Stars. The Gymnasium quality is also reflected in other<br />
sports equipment, such as the recently remodeled stadium<br />
Prefeito Francisco Ribeiro Nogueira, and it is becoming<br />
reference for the whole state, and <strong>Mogi</strong> Skate Park.<br />
