INTERVIEW
mayor
marcus melo
exclusive interview
Marcus Melo, elected mayor for
the first time, has a management
marked by the planning in the
medium and long term in order
to impact a genration
Mr. Melo and his team visiting Corredor Leste-Oeste works.
: Which are the steps taken until
you reached the position of Mogi das Cruzes
Mayor?
mArcUs melo: I had the opportunity to be
president of the Commercial Association of Mogi, and
soon after I received the invitation from Mayor Marco
Betaiolli to help him in the City Hall. I came to help
with the day-to-day administration. I participated in
projects in all areas, but mainly for health, education,
security areas. This experience prepared me. I had never
been a candidate for councilman, deputy
mayor, and neither mayor. So for me, it
was a big challenge. We were elected in the
first round with 64% of the votes, and I
have tried to continue the administration
of the city, which was very well conducted
in previous years. Today, even with the
crisis, here in Mogi we are making progress,
especially in health. I am mayor and I
have tried to work to improve people’s dayto-day
lives.
: What are the main goals of your
management?
mm: Of course we have big projects for the city, but today we
want to keep all public services working, health, education.
Safety has been a great learning experience for us, and we
are working so that, with good management, tomorrow
will be better than today. I have a law undergraduate
degree, a graduate degree in Strategic Management and
an MBA in Business Management. My head has always
been of an administrator, and I try to bring this to the city
hall, guiding my management for ethics and respect to the
legislation. Who wins it is the population. In September,
for example, we received an ONA certification for our
Municipal Hospital. This certification is like a certificate of
the good care given to the patient, who finds a hospital unit
prepared, with trained professionals, adequate equipment
and facilities. It’s all first-world.
Our health model is based on management, we have
doubled the amount of health equipment in the last 8
years. The Municipal Laboratory of Clinical Analyzes
is managed by Albert Einstein Hospital. Today, close to
25% of the demanded patients cared by our Integrated
Health System is formed by residents of neighboring
cities. Another 15% have health insurance plans. This
shows that our network is a reference in Greater São
Paulo, but it also imposes us a great challenge because
we cannot deny medical care to anyone.
: Have you visited the companies of
the city, in your opinion what contribution such
local mayor-business relationship can bring to
your management?
mm: We have tried to approach the private initiative
