‘No to racism’
NTSIKELELO QOYO
The National Union of
Metalworkers of South
Africa (Numsa) led a
protest march last week on
behalf of its members who claim
they suffered unfair treatment,
including racial abuse by their
former employer – the Sasol
franchise in Komani.
“We organised our members
and the public against the owner
who is racist towards his workers
and the public,” Numsa regional
secretary Mziyanda Thwani said.
Loyiso Gidimi – who has a case
of unfair dismissal at the
Commission for Conciliation,
Mediation and Arbitration
(CCMA) against the Griebenhouw
family who are the business
owners – claimed he suffered
racism at the business for years.
He recalled an incident in 2013
when a monkey or a baboon skull
was allegedly brought to work by
one of the family members,
saying the skull was compared to
the anatomy of black people.
He also accused the
Griebenhouws of insisting that
staff must direct black customers
outside if they wanted to use
restrooms, only white customers
were to use the ones inside.
Heinrich Griebenhouw has
dismissed the claims, adding he
would be willing to take a
lie-detector test against claims of
racially abusing his employees
and challenged those who accuse
him, to do the same.
He added that Sasol does not
have a policy that separates
c u st o m e r s .
Among the claims Numsa
levelled against the business, is
that workers are kept on casual
status for periods longer than the
ones stipulated by law.
The union demanded that
workers be hired permanently
after three months.
Griebenhouw disagreed,
saying, “We ’ve got a programme
at Sasol where we get young
guys, straight from school. They
don’t have any experience. We
take them in and they sign
volunteer contracts with us. We
give them the opportunity to get
trained as petrol attendants.”
He insisted that they are not
hired as casual workers.
However, he did not specify the
volunteering period. He said it
depends on the individual as
candidates take different times to
learn. He said Sasol can offer
exceptional candidates contracts
after a probation period.
“The problem is that in our
roster it says casual, it should
have said volunteer. But it is
something I am starting to
reconsider. Even though we went
out with good intentions, they
have turned it now.”
Numsa claimed Griebenhouw
made it difficult for his employees
to join unions and has pushed
those who have, out – harassing
them over minor offences just
because they joined unions.
Griebenhouw said he has never
had an application from Numsa
for any of his employees which he
rejected.
“I would challenge them to
bring any proof that they brought
such an application of which I
made sure it did not happen.”
Local Numsa organiser
Siyabulela Maselani said, “It is
because we told them not to
because we know they will get
victimised.”
However Sasol manager Mhleli
Gwebeshe claimed that when
they approached their employees
after receiving the notice from the
union the day before, none of
them knew about it. He said he
had never witnessed any of the
racial acts alleged to have been
committed by the owners.
The owners denied that a
monkey or baboon skull were
brought to work by a family
member and compared to the
anatomy of black people. He also
specifically denied that Sasol
ever insisted black people use
the outside bathrooms. He said
Gidimi sought to damage their
reputation after his dismissal.
Minister of Human Settlements Nomaindia Mfeketo
visited Ilinge resident Johnson Pongwane, 94, at his
home to personally hand over his long awaited title
deed for his RDP house last week.
Mfeketo was accompanied by the local authority’s
officials, including human settlements manager
Liseka Bam who indicated the plan was to hand
over 50 title deeds, but due to recipients having left
the venue after a long wait, they would receive
theirs on another day.
Pongwane told Mfeketo as he received his deed
that the houses built by the governing party were
not worthy to be lived in by anti-apartheid struggle
veterans like himself, who spent years in Robben
THE REPRESENTATIVE 26 April 2019
Long wait delays
deeds handover
From page 1
Island for the future of the country.
“We were promised bigger houses than
what I live in today. The house I had before
this one which I had built myself, was much
bigger and accommodated my family. It is
sad that the ruling party showed its
gratitude to the people who fought for the
liberation of this country like this.
“However, I spent my youth fighting with
and for the ANC and there is no other
political home for me. I say this with a
heavy heart because the party we love is no
longer what it used to be. I have no choice
but to be thankful for at least getting this
house because many people do not have
home and I will have something to leave to
my family one day when I pass on.”
Meanwhile, hundreds of residents who
hoped to also receive their title deeds, left
the Ilinge Community Hall due to the late
arrival of the minister.
Ilinge resident Nayisi Xaba said they had
been waiting for the minister since 1pm but
she only arrived after 4pm which Xaba said
was a sign of disrespect for the people of
Ilinge.
“I wasted my time here and left without
receiving the title deeds we were promised.
They instead told me to go check my status
on a list at the municipal offices. When
some people go check the process with
regarding to their title deeds, they
sometimes find out their houses are
registered in someone else’s name.”
Reacting to questions from residents
regarding the standard of the RDP houses
and how they cracked before owners moved
in, Mfeketo indicated the department was
working with the National Home Builders
Registration Council (NHBRC) to look for
contractors who would ensure proper and
rigid houses were built.
“The department makes provision for 10%
of the total grant meant to build houses per
province to fix existing RDP houses with
problems. We are working tirelessly to
ensure the houses built are strong enough
to last for generations, hence our
partnership with the NHBRC.”
Mfeketo said her department would
continue building houses for those who
needed them the most and understood the
grievances from residents regarding the
process of receiving a house, and that
government was decisive in rooting out
problems that deprived the people from
obtaining houses.
Mlungisi residents beat robber to a pulp
ZINTLE BOBELO
Another case of mob justice
played out in Mlungisi on
Saturday when a man
accused of robbery was
beaten to a pulp by residents
of Thulandivile who claim
they have had enough.
The Rep spoke to a
frustrated parent whose
20-year-old son was robbed
on his way back from town on
Friday evening.
“It was his birthday and his
friends had bought him gifts,
so he went to go fetch those
from his friends in town.
“On his way back at around
7pm, he said he was robbed
by two guys near the Gauteng
informal settlement. He said
they took his gifts, R800, his
bank card, student card, ID, a
USB flash drive and his new
cellphone.”
The parent, who did not
want to be named, said his
son went to go report this at
the Mlungisi police station,
but the door was locked.
“He said he knocked, but
the door were not opened.
This happened at around 3am
on Saturday.
“We woke up in the
morning to search for the
perpetrators because my son
said he recognised one of
them. We found him and he
denied everything – t h at ’s
when everyone started
beating him.”
She said police arrived on
the scene and took the
alleged suspect to hospital.
Other residents, who did
not want to be named, said
cases of robbery and
housebreaking were common
in the area, indicating they
were not safe and they have
had enough.
The parent said she was
disappointed as the police
showed no care.
“There is a shack situated
at Gauteng informal
settlement where all of these
criminals get together, do
drugs and then rob people.
Residents have once tried to
burn it down, but it is still
there,” she said.
Ward 17 councillor
Mncedisi Mbengo
encouraged the act of mob
justice, indicating this would
serve as a signal to others
who were violating the law.
“I have been informed by
the ward committee and the
sector forum about this
occurrence. I have called a
community meeting today
[April 26] to discuss and
address this issue.
“Criminals must be
punished and if need be, they
must be beaten to the point
of death. This will warn other
criminals not to practise
criminal activity in our areas.”
Mbengo said he had
received information about the
shack that was identified as a
drug den and a spot where
criminals were residing.
“These informal
settlements must be
destroyed. I am yet to get full
details from the community
members during the
meeting,” he said.
In response to whether he
was aware about claims made
Joint operation yields results for Komani police
In a successful joint police operation recently,
Crime Intelligence working with the Stock Theft
Unit and K9 followed up on information of firearms
that were stolen during housebreaking cases
reported in Komani between February and March.
On Good Friday, members received in formation
of the firearms hidden in the bushes near Roydon.
A search was conducted and firearms were
recovered. These were two 22 caliber rifles, a
30,06 caliber rifle, two 12 bore short guide, about
200 live ammunition and 100 spent cartridges as
well as a short gun licence.
According to Komani police spokesperson,
Namhla Mdleleni, no arrests were made and all the
firearms were booked by police for safe keeping.
EFF MP ditches political home for AT M
ANDISA BONANI
EFF MP and Komani local Zolile
Xalisa officially crossed-over
and joined the African
Transformation Movement (ATM)
where he took jabs at his former
party leader Julius Malema in his
resignation letter last Thursday.
The event that took place at the
12 Apostles Church also saw former
Bizana mayor Zoleka Busuku and
two EFF members from Ezibeleni,
Thulani Bukani and Xolani Ngxathu
join the established party.
During his speech, Xalisa made
serious corruption allegations
against Malema including how he
flouted taxes.
“With the 6% we achieved in the
2014 elections which got us 61
seats across all legislatures in the
country, you deducted R7,000 from
each MP and MPL without
consulting them which amounted
to R427,000.
You argued we were in those
positions because of your
popularit y.”
Xalisa alleged Malema failed to
disclose his expenditure of the
par t y’s funds to members despite
the fact that the constitution
demands accountability from party
leaders.
“If you are willing to go the extra
mile to escape accountability about
organisational funds, what are your
motives and what must we make of
them should the people of this
country give you political power
over state resources,” he asked.
Xalisa said he resigned because
Malema intimidated members who
dared to ask him questions about
party funds and threatened to have
them removed from parliament.
Former DA whip in the province’s
legislature and now ATM premier
candidate, Veliswa Mvenya, said
the issue of service delivery in
municipalities across the province
would improve only if decent
people from various political
parties joined them in clean
governance.
“We call ourselves servants and
not fighters because we preach
peace in our land and not fighting.
The reason there are so many
protests in the province is because
people are not satisfied with how
things are done.
“When you call yourself a
servant, that means you lead from
the back and allow the people who
put you in the position you serve in
to give you the mandate. We want
to do away with people who forget
what their job is and the people
who elected them when they
assume positions of power.”
Mvenya said Xalisa and Busuku
needed to recruit the “fighters and
comrades” from their respective
previous political parties to join the
faith-based party to grow in
numbers.
Controversy as special council meeting is cancelled
ANDISA BONANI
An Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality (EMLM) special
council meeting meant to discuss the future of
administrator Vuyo Mlokothi was cancelled due to its
illegal convention on Tuesday.
A council document indicated that members
wanted to be afforded an opportunity to reconsider a
decision taken against the placement of Mlokoti.
The Rep reported (“Xasa digs in his heels despite
administ rator’s ‘sacking’”, April 18) the MEC for the
department of co-operative governance and
traditional affairs (Cogta) Fikile Xasa rubbished
council’s decision to remove administrator Mlokothi
in a reply letter to council, following a resolution to
have him sacked.
“The replacement of the administrator may only be
considered if it were shown that he acted beyond his
scope as prescribed by the terms of reference,” read
the letter.
Squabbles began when United Front councillor
Aaron Mhlontlo raised the fact that the council
meeting had not met the 48-hour notice period that
is required by law before a sitting takes place.
“We received notices via SMS about this meeting
last Thursday and according to the standing rules of
council and the legislation of the country, public
holidays do not count, which means Easter Friday
and Monday do not count as working days. Therefore
if we continue with this meeting and make decisions,
we will have done so in an illegal one.”
ANC councillor Luleka Gubula said the rules of
council did not specify whether the 48-hour period
did not include public holidays and weekends, and
that according to her interpretation of the rules the
meeting had met all requirements for it to sit.
DA councillor Chris de Wet echoed Mhlontlo and
also indicated that when counting the 48-hour period
one would start counting the following day. He asked
for council to do the right thing and cancel the
meeting and a new notice be sent.
The local authority’s acting municipal manager
(MM) Gcobani Mashiyi tried to minimise the quarrel
and read out the rules which indicated the days to be
counted when calculating the 48 hours.
EMLM mayor Sisisi Tolashe said it should then be
noted that Mashiyi misled speaker Bongiwe van
Heerden as her adviser.
“If the acting MM advised the speaker differently
and correctly this would have been avoided. If this
meeting gets cancelled it will have financial
implications and therefore must not be taken lightly.”
ANC councillor Nkululeko Ngcefe suggested
council ignore the standing rules and continue with
the meeting because the sole item on the agenda
was pertinent and urgent.
DA councillor Zuko Mandile said the mayor was
wrong to put blame on the acting MM because he
was not the custodian of council rules.
“The person responsible to uphold rules is the
Speaker and she signed off the agenda knowing
what the rules said. It would be unfair to put the
blame on the advisor when the actual custodian of
the rules did not query this before signing off the
agenda.”
Councillors agreed that the meeting had been
incorrectly convened and that a new notice would be
sent. The council meeting was rescheduled to Friday.

Singing a new
song to the Lord
NTSIKELELO OYO
A message of love and hope –
one song at a time.
This is the message of
Whittlesea-born and
Komani-based music artist
Thandokazi Pearl Khoza.
The songbird has released
two new gospel songs in her
EP spurred by her belief that
“music should inspire love, joy
and peace”.
The songs follow a
contemporary approach to
worship with a jazz influence,
which allows Pearl to show off
her celestial voice.
The songs are the smooth
Faithful is our God” and the
up-tempo Don’t Even Think
About it, to keep parishioners
dancing for Sunday.
Pe a r l ’s love for singing and
worship goes far back. She has
been singing since high school
and sang in choirs in her alma
mater, Fort Hare.
According to her, music runs
in the family.
“Both my father and
granddad were great singers.
One of my fondest memories is
FUN AND HEALTH: It was fun and enjoyment for community members of
Zola and Mabuyaze Location in Dongwe last week. The community hosted
an Easter 5km Fun Run and Fun Walk competition with categories for
both adults and the youth. The event was a partnership between
businessman Mxolisi Aganda, the owner of Dali’s Tarven, along with
Whittlesea SAPS, sector manager Zuko Qonde and Mandilakhe Khoba.
People with disabilities were also part of the programme and Aganda’s
message to the community was to encourage the youth to participate in
sport and better their lives
VLV-program. Sy het haar praatjie
opgedeel in die volgende
onderwerpe: “Lekker Kos”; “Mooi
Huis” en “Modieuse Klere”.
Lekker kos: Verlede jaar was die
jaar van spysverterings-vriendelike
kosse, geaktiveerde
houtskoolroomys, poke-bakkies (‘n
tipe sushi), en “Reënboog-Alles”!
’n Paar nuwe eetgoed waarna ons
vanjaar kan uitsien, is: a) Sampioene
(daar was ‘n sampioentert ook vir
teetyd!), selfs as bestandeel in
sjokolade-nageregte en in
koffiedrankies; b) Beesstert; c)
Pegan-kosse – deels v e g a n i st i e s
Paleo/Steentydperk (maer vleise,
vis, vrugte, groente, suiwel, olies van
olyf en klapper, neute en sade); d)
Hawermelk as suiwel-alternatief; en
e) Tuisgemaakte konfyte.
Mooi Huis: Die volgende is gewild:
a) Geverfde vloer/muurteëls –
sommer bo-oor jou bestaande teëls
met ’n stensil, regte verf en ‘n
seëlaar; b) Tekstielkuns – soos die
gee tekstuur aan ’n muur; c)
Kontemporêre vuurmaakplekke –
vergadering hierdie tegniek te oefen;
f) Tin is klaar in patrone gedruk en
word opgesit waar verkies word,
byvoorbeeld teen jou dak of teen
spatmure in die kombuis; g)
Keramiek is altyd ’n wenner – hetsy
as ornamente of ’n eetstel, en kan
ook buite gebruik word; h)
Muurpapier is baie gewild, maar
baie duur; i) Geometriese patrone
geverf op mure kan met ’n stensil of
jou eie idees gedoen word; j)
Mosterdgeel is die in-kleur vanjaar.
Mooi Klere: Gewilde kleure is ‘n
lewendige koraalkleur en salmpienk.
Die vroeëre bottelgroen word vanjaar
vervang met ‘n sagte saliegroen.
MAAR: Vind wat vir jou werk en
Edlelweni Primary shines in choral competition
ZINTLE BOBELO
Edlelweni Public Primary School scooped eight
awards at the ABC Motsepe Schools
Eisteddfod recently hosted at Mzingisi
Skweyiya Hall.
Principal Zukisani Sondlo said the pupils
have yet again done the school proud with the
junior choir making it to first position for the
English piece and were placed second for
v e r n a c u l a r.
The boys’ choir, recently introduced to the
school, also obtained first position for the
English piece and second place for vernacular.
The intermediate phase was on the number
one spot for the Western piece and number
two for the vernacular piece.
“Last year we collected many trophies from
music competitions. We are always grateful for
these achievements. We will be staging for the
Circuit Management Centre competitions on
May 3 and this gives us strength to prepare for
other higher competitions,” said Sondlo.
He said music generally brought great
enthusiasm at the school. “The pupils get
excited and are steadily getting into that tune
of winning these choral competitions. More
confidence is gained especially when they
have to get on stage to compete with other
schools. Even the atmosphere here at school is
positive and vibrant because of these trophies
brought by our children.”
Sondlo said the pupils had managed to get
the awards through producing good work and
dedicated teachers. “Educators were present
even during school holidays. They made sure
that pupils were organised and were kept
away from wrongful activities. We have a team
that is committed and I must also mention the
support from parents. They were very assistive
and they made sure that the uniforms were
kept clean.”
Choir coordinator Nombulelo Mpela said
preparing the pupils for competitions came
with challenges but with the unwavering
support from other role players in her team
they overcame those challenges. “It is
sometimes hard to get them to practice
sessions but ultimately they have made me
proud. They enjoy singing and this has
motivated them a lot.” Mpela said they have
started preparing for the next competition and
reckons the choir will again be in first place.
Alcohol consumers challenged to go sober
ANDISA BONANI
The Eastern Cape Liquor
Board took to Komani
streets to educate
residents about the dangers of
the Alcohol Foetal Syndrome
(FAS) before it concluded its
alcohol awareness month last
week.
Representatives from the
liquor board visited clinics,
taxi ranks and schools to
teach the young and old about
the danger posed to an unborn
baby if the mother consumed
alcohol while pregnant.
Liquor Board spokesperson
Mgweba Msiya said the
company realised a growing
trend of pregnant women
drinking alcohol, which in turn
affected their children’s brain
growth.
“Research which was done
in several schools in Port
Elizabeth recently showed that
in every 100 pupils, 30 were
born with FAS and it affected
their academic progress.
“The issue with FAS is that it
is often realised later in a
child’s life because its
symptoms are not always
visible when a child is still
young.
“However, some children are
born physically impaired due
to excessive drinking from the
m ot h e r.
“Other children would be
hyper active, not do well in
school or have crossed eyes
among other signs.”
Msiya said the main
problem was that people
lacked knowledge about FAS
and during their campaign,
they found out that a
significant number of ordinary
citizens did not know about it.
“Hence it was important for
us to do this campaign this
month as it is dubbed the
alcohol awareness month. We
want to reach out to all kinds
of people and across the age
barrier to teach them about
FAS and ultimately encourage
people generally to decrease
their alcohol consumption.
“We also reached out to
people in villages because we
noticed that alcohol abuse was
not only in cities but had also
infiltrated areas where access
to information was limited. We
do not only focus on women
but on men as well for them to
be custodians of healthy and
normal drinking and them to
influence others and pass on
the knowledge about the
danger of FAS.”
Msiya said the general
populace was encouraged to
go sober in the first and last
week of April as a way to push
the campaign so it reaches
other people who might not
have heard about it.
“Hence we were abuzz in
the streets of Komani and
surrounding areas, reaching
out to taxi drivers, commuters,
the layman and the educated
because even they tend to be
ignorant about issues related
to alcohol abuse.”
Excitement as new practice opens in Queenstown
Dr Nombulelo Fani- Sigcu
I am Dr Nombulelo Fani- Sigcu and would like
to take this opportunity to share my sense of
gratitude to everyone who has had a positive
input towards this practice. In short, I would like
to say thank you.
I say this with the pleasure of informing you
of the success your positive input has provided
our practice. The practice was registered on
my birthday on 3 March 2014 but was officially
advertorial
Dr N. P. Fani-Sigcu
opened on the 14 March 2014. The main goal was
to come home & plough back to my community
the values they have taught me. The mission was
to open a general practice with special interest in
obstetrics and gynaecology as I have acquired a
diploma in that field.
The aim was to offer all health services to
the community. But due to my special skill and
interest, I was hoping that one day the practice
could grow into a women’s clinic.
As it stands now, we celebrated our 5th
anniversary on 14 March 2019 which marked the
beginning of another milestone for me as on 3
March 2019. I was entering into a 40th decade of
my life. I always taught myself that anything in my
life should have progress in five years and should
move a step further after that. I get bored with the
same challenge that has no change/change in the
Consulting rooms: 10 Calderwood Street, Whittlesea
role it played after five years.
So, we are now celebrating this in combination
with the opening of our new practice in Queenstown.
We realised that maybe Whittlesea, as much as it is
a hometown, might still be too rural to understand
the idea of a fully flashedwomen’s clinic. The vision
is that all women know where to go, where to talk
about problems related to their health in terms of
reproductive health and children. We don’t doubt
that Whittlesea will remain our mother practice as it
has given birth to Queenstown, but our hope is that
Queenstown will do better in that regard. Whittlesea
has proven its success in the past five years and
we are happy about where it is at present. Now that
we will be having two practices, I suppose it is your
concern how we are going to run them. This is how
it’s going to work: The surgery in Queenstown is at
No 39 Grey Street, opposite Avis Car Hire.
It will open officially on 29 April 2019 at 8am. We
will take appointments in the morning until 10am,
then at 10:30am I will be at Whittlesea until 3pm,
expected to start again in Queenstown at 3:30pm
till 5:30pm. This will definitely be challenging
at the beginning but we will try by all means to
make it easy for our patients. When I leave for
Queenstown, Whittlesea will remain open for
medication collection, injections RE family planning
and appointments for the next day until 4pm. Any
patients that need to see me on the day can be sent
to Queenstown for my attention. Let me go through
the appointment system. Once your name is booked,
you’ll be first on the list but that is only for the first
hour of the practice. Should you arrive after 12 noon,
you forfeit your place. Telephonic bookings are also
acceptable.
We hope that this arrangement will benefit both
any way. The staff at Dr Fani-Sigcu Medical Centre
thank you to my husband, in-laws, parents and
THE REPRESENTATIVE 26 April 2019
EDITORIAL
OPINION
Spin doctors
must do job
Spin doctors need to come to the
par t y
Media spokespeople have a
tough job.
Journalists seek information on
a regular basis, all the time, quite
f r a n k l y.
Spin doctors, as media
spokespersons are often referred
to, don’t always have the
information at hand. They also rely
on various other sources for
information and obtaining the
necessary details can be a
struggle. These professionals are
also expected to carry out
administrative duties and juggling
the various tasks is a challenge,
especially if one adds another
problem – lack of resources,
especially for government spin
doctors.
But this is no excuse for the
mouthpieces to neglect their
responsibilities.
Government communicators get
paid pretty well, not to mention
those who are employed by
private companies – they get
enormous salaries. So they need
to do their work. It is
unacceptable that a spokesperson
is unreachable.
Journalists have every right to
report communicators whose
cellphones just ring and there is
not even a way of leaving a voice
message and e-mails and
WhatsApp messages go
unanswered. Editors ought to take
this up with their superiors.
Colonel Sibongile Soci, to whom
SAPS spin doctors in the Eastern
Cape report, proactively engages
journalists and editors by visiting
their media houses to discuss
challenges and improve relations.
The impact of this engagement
makes a world of difference.
Journalists have been patient
enough.
Even when they have tried all
the avenues mentioned earlier
and came back with naught,
journalists are not quick to pass
judgment. Sometimes they will let
their readers know through a
statement at the end of a story
that reads, ‘the spokesperson had
not responded to questions by the
time of going to print’. In certain
instances the line reads, “the
spokesperson was not available
for comment” or “attempts to
reach the spokesperson proved
futile”.
All these are journalists’
attempts at being reasonable and
understanding. It takes several
attempts before the line will read,
“the spokesperson failed to
respond to questions sent to
him/her”. By this time, the
journalist has had it, tried all the
necessary avenues, and is left
with no choice but to tell the
reader in no uncertain terms.
Spokespeople and journalists
need each other. We have a
common goal – to disseminate
information to communities out
there. We need to work together
to achieve this goal. Answering
your cellphone or returning my
call, replying to my e-mail and my
query sent via WhatsApp, will go
a long way in ensuring
information is shared with the
public.
At a local level, it has been
refreshing to learn that Enoch
Mgijima Local Municipality has
resolved its quandary regarding
its spokespersons. See Page 11.
Countdown to the polls
We have 12 days before the national
and provincial elections to usher in
the sixth administration are to be
held. By all accounts this promises
to be the most fiercely contested
election yet in the history of our
young democracy.
Since 1994, the ANC has been
enjoying an overwhelming majority
in all provinces except the Western
Cape which they got to rule for one
term only after they swallowed up
the National Party. On the national
polls they have been very dominant
and have done
exceptionally well.
In 2014, ANC
got 62.15%, the
DA 22.23%, the
EFF 6.35%, the
IFP 2.40% and the
remaining 6.87%
was split amongst the smaller
parties. The most striking part about
the last elections in 2014 was the
decimation of COPE which fell from
7.4% or 1,311,27 votes to a dismal
123,235 or 0.67% of the votes and a
spectacular entrance of the EFF.
The EFF at first attempt made a
grand entrance and has in the last
five years maintained the momentum.
The question one has is how big
will their gain be this time around?
Many have estimated that they will
double their support and hover
around 12 to 13% – whether that
comes to pass is everyone’s guess.
Judging by what has happened
with the DA in the last few months, I
will be surprised if they make a
significant gain from their last
performance in 2014.
The enigma and a potential bolter
will be the IFP who are slowly
regenerating themselves in their
IN
TOUCH
... with Phumelele P Hlati
stronghold of KwaZulu-Natal, but it
remains to be seen if this will
translate to any significant gain from
the 2.4% they got last time.
The IEC’s figures reveal that about
36.5 million people are eligible to
vote out of the population of about
55 million people.
Disturbingly, there are 9.8 million
unregistered voters which makes up
26.8% of all eligible voters.
Interestingly, about 14.7 million
registered voters, or 55%, are
female, and 12 million are male.
So
n u m e r i c a l l y,
women hold the
winning hand
and they have
the power to
determine who
the leaders of
the country might be.
Whether the women as a voting
block realise the power that they
have, is not clear. Many of the
parties contesting elections do not
spell out a quota of women on their
election list, unlike the ANC which
has a 50/50 split at all levels.
Could the loose arrangements
other parties have be a decisive
factor in getting the crucial women
v ot e ?
It is not apparent so far that
women see themselves as a voting
block and potential kingmakers.
Consequently, many parties have
not really focused on them
separately, but have tailored their
message to resonate with the
general population of which women
are one part of.
So what are my predictions for the
May 8 elections? I will let you know
this time next Friday.
YOUR VOICE
Question: What do you do?
Answer: I am the media director of
Komani-based commercial farm called
Dicla training and projects.
Q: What do you enjoy about the work
you do?
A: Mostly I enjoy that I represent a
black-owned large scale farm that
provides means to better the agricultural
knowledge and skills of aspiring young,
black farmers.
Q: In what way do you think initiatives
such as Dicla are helping the youth and
our unemployment crisis?
A: Companies such as Dicla ignite hope
for the youth and the unemployment crisis
by offering in-service training, internship
and permanent jobs to university students
and graduates. Furthermore, we offer short
courses and learnerships that equip one
with more opportunities of being
e m p l o ya b l e .
Q: Do you think black women are given
enough opportunities to impact the
media space?
A: You know what, there could never be
enough opportunities given to black
women. We are competent and capable
enough to impact the media industry and
we deserve all the recognition and
chances we get.
with Lilitha Bolani
Media Practitioner at Dicla in Komani
Q: What is your favourite team?
A: Locally, Kaizer Chiefs, internationally
and whole-heartedly, Real Madrid.
Q: How do you feel about Bafana’s
prospects in the Afcon?
A: I don’t have faith in the team passing
through the group stages. They have fierce
competition in Morocco and Ivory Coast
and as much as they have threatening
players like Tau and Dolly, they can’t keep
relying on them to do well in the
tournament.
Q: Are you registered to vote? Will you?
A: Of course. I will be exercising my
right as a South African citizen to vote.
Q: Do you think the country is going in
the right direction?
A: In some aspects. We have come far to
get to where we are as a nation today, but
certain factors like corruption, racism and
sexism are preventing the further
betterment of our country.
Q: When you are not working, what do
you enjoy doing?
A: If I’m not watching football and
movies with my family, I’m caught up
reading some book or magazines.
Q: Place to go before you die?
A: Madrid, Spain and watch my team
Fighting crime through sport
ZINTLE BOBELO
Nonesi Development
Forum celebrated
Easter by hosting a
sports tournament at
Khundulu sports
ground which aimed
at combating crime
and substance abuse
in villages of Cacadu.
Secretar y-general
Ayanda Ncinane said
the vision of the
newly formed forum
was to plough back
and improve the
living conditions of
Lady Frere
communit y
members.
He said the theme
was motivated by the
escalating criminal
activity in the area
which was a
contributing factor to
the high pupil
absence rate in
schools.
“Crime is rife in our
area and villages are
divided due to young
boys fighting
amongst each other.
“A week before the
tournament, there
was an incident
where a young boy
was killed in one of
the areas. With this
theme we were trying
to go back to the
basics by keeping
the youth busy with
spor t.
There’s a lot that
we are hoping to
achieve by assisting
local government
with the facilitation
of educational
activities, skills
development and
t raining.”
Ncinane said they
were confident that
they had achieved
their goal, indicating
that the opening
ceremony which was
attended by
representatives from
the South African
Football Association
focused on
addressing unlawful
activities that seem
to have taken their
toll in the area.
Teams in various
sports codes such as
soccer, netball and
rugby participated in
this first annual
tournament. Ncinane
said the handing
over of prizes was
postponed due to
bad weather
conditions and teams
were to be informed
on the actual dates
of the special event.
The first prize
amounted to
R10,000. In second
place, Teenagers
Football Club will
walk away with
R5,000 and in third
place Fast Eleven
Football Club will be
awarded R2,500.
All prizes include
sport kits. Seven
Tigers netball team
maintained first
position in their
category and will be
receiving the first
prize followed by
Teenagers Netball
Club in second place,
leaving the Home
Defenders in third
place.
“We have made
provision for the
teams that did not
win by providing the
top nine with sport
kits and soccer balls.
ANC must act on wrongdoings of leaders
Unsurprised resident writes: I was not
surprised by the reaction of some in the
ruling party to reports that ANC
secretary-general Ace Magashule paid
R400 to a woman while out campaigning
in Cape Town recently.
Many ANC supporters have come out in
defence of their man, claiming he was
simply being kind and concerned about
the resident’s empty fridge.
Quite frankly, I don’t care how
kind-hearted or generous Magashule is.
The fact remains – there are rules
governing payment of money during
campaigning.
The rules and regulations of the IEC are
clear on this matter – offering any
inducement or reward to a person to vote
for a party is prohibited conduct in terms
of the Electoral Code of Conduct and
breach of the code carries a hefty fine of
R200,000 and other penalties.
I just think ANC supporters and leaders
will do anything to protect one of their
own even if it was clear they were
breaking the law.
We all know how they defended their
disgraced former president Jacob Zuma.
It’s going to be interesting to hear how
the IEC rules on this matter.
I see the commission has already made
a ruling on the matter between the DA
and Patricia de Lille, in favour of the
lat ter.
Unless the ruling party stops defending
its disgraced leaders and instead take
drastic action against them, it will
continue to suffer losses in numbers.
I do acknowledge the efforts of the
Veterans League who have called on the
party to take action against Magashule.
But will the party take any action?

LUVUYO MJEKULA
There was a jovial mood at John Noah High
School in Mlungisi Extension last week as
pupils took part in a brightly set up beauty
pageant.
Both boys and girls took part and
teachers and other pupils watched proudly
as the future models showed off their
talents.
Acting deputy principal Lindiwe Ntulini,
who is also the convener of the school’s
events committee, explained that the
school held the competition to welcome
new pupils.
“We had a Miss Freshette as a rite of
passage for those who have recently joined
our school,” she said.
But that was not all.
“Part of this is to try and make learning
and teaching meaningful, searching for
talents as not all of our learners will end up
being academics. Some will be future Miss
SA or turn out to be models,” Ntulini
added.
The competition also served as a
confidence booster. “So we are trying to
train them to gain confidence and be able
to face the public as some will be
politicians, which means they will need
confidence in public speaking.”
Ntulini said the school also sought to
mould the children’s behaviour, seeing that
a lot of pupils had behavioural problems
which could be attributed to exposure to
social ills and challenges that come with
growing up in child-headed homes.
SHEILA THYSSE
A few weeks ago, a friend in my painting
class mentioned the Love of Art charity art
exhibition in Komani and I thought this was a
great way of raising money for an old age
home, so I happily submitted a few pieces of
my art.
For more than 30 years, I’ve dabbled in all
sorts of art. I started with embroidery with
Lorna Bateman when we were all teaching
together and she is about to publish her
second embroidery book in the UK.
I had often thought of the idea of having
LOVE OF ART: Artist Serano Whittaker’s love for wildlife is
evident in this drawing of two lions
Self-taught artist excels
at doing what he loves
Self-taught artist Serano
Whittaker was born and bred
in Komani.
He was introduced to art
by an older cousin and
immediately fell in love with
creating images. Whittaker
said he was inspired by
comic books, as well as
artists such as Vincent va n
Gogh and Leonardo da Vinci.
He later came first in an art
competition and the next year
he got second place.
He gave up for a while, but
was motivated to return to
being an artist by his wife
and daughter and now can’t
keep up with producing
commissioned artworks.
He specialises in graphite
and charcoal, and draws his
inspiration from the beauty of
everyday life.
Value of art for heart, soul and community
my own arts and crafts studio and then in
about 1998, I was able to do this.
I taught many women – and a few men –
decoupage, ceramic painting, 3D mounting of
pictures and material covering of boxes. It
was a very happy, fulfilling time, but I had to
return to teaching as my long leave was over.
After resigning as a teacher, I managed the
studio alone and met many lovely people. At
this time, I also started watercolour painting
lessons with a great teacher, Val Roux.
After a few years, our teacher retired and
so did most of the artists. As always, my
hands were itching for a different medium.
I tried oils and then fortunately was
accepted by Shirley Pittaway in her acrylic
classes. This is “me” time as painting is so
good for the soul.
I try many different subjects which you’ll
see at the exhibition and the joy of acrylics is
that it is easy to correct and easy to blot out
and to start again. I do enjoy the classes and
the inspiration we are to one another.
May my simple paintings inspire others!
Slatem a woman with curiousity, flair for art
I have always had an interest in design and art.
As a young married woman, I spent most of
my spare money on art pieces and over the
years have obtained a collection of fine
artworks, my favourite being an oil painting by
Adriaan Boshoff, which I purchased with my
pension fund when I left the bank to have
children.
I always wanted to try my hand at painting,
but really did not have the time as I pursued a
career in property, following in my mom’s
footsteps. Due to an accident 20 years ago, my
entire life changed. It was then that I realised
how vulnerable we are as people, and how we
truly take life for granted. In an instant your life
can change.
I started to question what my life was all
about. This was the start of my spiritual
MARIANA BENSON
journey. God had shown me the light
in the person of Jesus Christ, and my
life has never been the same again.
I had to give up my career and
started on the road to physical and
spiritual healing. This led me to pick
up a paint brush and express our very
creation on canvas. I was then able to
afford the time to attend painting
classes. As a beginner I always
wanted to paint in oils, but after two
or three years realised that painting
wet on wet was just not “my thing”. I
wanted results and I wanted them
quickly. My husband, Garth and I enjoy
travelling around the country, so take every
opportunity to combine workshops and meet
artists in other cities.
Ar tist’s passion for flowers pays off
My love for art started at school.
I have been taking art lessons
since 2015. I started off with
lessons with talented artist Karen
Flood and have been at tending
classes with Shirley Pitaway
since 2016. I have also had some
classes with Itai Vangani as it is
NOELENE
S L AT E M
good to learn different styles and
techniques from the artists.
My passion to paint flowers
originated from the fact that I did
a lot of floral art and was
involved at functions at Grey
High School while our sons
attended the school.
Our most recent trip was to Clarens,
where I picked up a wonderful find by
Joe Kotze, which she had painted 30
years ago. All her details were on the
reverse of the painting so I contacted
her and we travelled to Rosendal to
meet her and husband, Kobus Kotze.
Needless to say . . .we walked away
having purchased two of Kobus’s
paintings. I have a keen interest in
photography, so my camera goes with
me on all our trips, but it can sometimes
be frustrating for Garth as I want to stop
all the time, especially if I think this
mountain, or that field, or even a “rundown”
pondok looks like material that I can use.
I am so privileged to be able to exhibit at the
Queenstown event.
I enjoy painting in acrylic
medium. I believe that a creative
mind creates a positive, inspiring
mind.
My paintings have found some
happy homes in the UK, Canada,
USA, Ukraine, Italy, Australia and
New Zealand.
It has long been said that the Queen’s
College Old Boys’ Association is one
of the biggest and most widespread
organisations of its kind in the world,
with thousands of members in most
countries, bound together by one
common thing – the fact that they
attended Queen’s College.
The following item which was placed
on Facebook is just one illustration of
the bond that exists between these men:
“It is with really mixed emotions
(emotional, grateful, proud, relieved etc)
that I feel the need to share the
following with this group.
“I am part of a very tight-knit Class of
‘87 group and before our 30th reunion in
2017, I started looking for one particular
classmate with whom I had had no
contact since we matriculated. For
confidential reasons I will refer to him as
Adam.
Class of ‘87 members help former classmate in distress
“Adam was naughty, a good
sportsman who played a particular
musical instrument extremely well, but
was not the most popular person
around. I managed to locate him via his
second wife on Facebook and since then
I have only had contact with him on
about two occasions.
“Last week I received a distress call
from his wife (soon to be ex) informing
me that Adam was not in a good space
and basically destitute, living in his car
in Krugersdorp, Johannesburg.
“I was very sceptical but I phoned her
back to ask some personal questions, as
I do not believe in financially supporting
bad habits.
“She assured me he had sober habits
and was a re-born Christian, but could
no longer provide for their family due to
work drying up in the town where they
lived in the Free State.
“I posted a message on our WhatsApp
group and sent an e-mail to the group.
We have many others on the group who
were not part of the ‘87 group.
“I sit here typing with goosebumps
and a lump in my throat at the response
I received. Since then, Adam has been
moved from a shelter to a backpacker’s
guest house, has three meals a day, has
money for petrol that will help him in his
attempts to find work and a huge
number of Old Queenians are trying to
do the same. He says that due to the
fact that he was not a popular person at
school and had not kept in contact with
the lads, he could not understand that
they have now got his back.
“Why do I share this with you? It is
not about me. It is about the Class of
‘87, together with our adopted
classmates, it is about us being Old
Queenians and the Lord working
through people. The way in which the
guys came together to help a brother in
distress is just mind-boggling.
“This was taught to all of us from an
early age and I personally cannot thank
Queen’s College enough for instilling
good manners, respect, camaraderie,
love, Christianity and so much more in
us. I will also be forever grateful to my
late parents for sending me to a school
like QC when they could not afford it.
“I am one very proud Old Queenian
and I know that my brothers have got
my back. Esse Quam Videri.
“When Adam is settled I will make a
point of trying to convince him to give a
motivational talk/testimony at the
school. I am sure that this will give the
current boys at the school food for
thought. I now speak to him on a daily
basis and you can just hear in his voice
that he is going to rise above the
situation that he has found himself in
and has a new zest for life.”
Pet-proof your
garden space
The average plot size of new properties
is ever-shrinking which makes a neatly
manicured back garden one of the
biggest drawcards for potential buyers.
According to RE/MAX of Southern
Africa regional director and CEO Adrian
Goslett, those who choose to leave their
back garden poorly maintained are
missing out on a huge opportunity to
add value to their property.
However, for those who own pets,
maintaining a back-garden might be
easier said than done. “Fo r
homeowners, pet-proofing a garden
requires a double-sided approach. On
the one side, homeowners need to
protect their garden against their pet.
On the other, homeowners need to
protect their pet against their garden,”
Goslett advises.
For those unsure of the risks their
garden and their pet pose to each
other, RE/MAX of Southern Africa have
compiled a few tips for peaceful
co-existence between the two:
SELECTIVE PLANTING
Homeowners ought to be very
selective when choosing what to plant
in their backyard.
Certain plants (such as lilies and
daffodils) and fertilizers are actually
toxic if consumed by pets. Others (such
ascitrus or chili plants) can act as
natural repellents that will keep your
pet out of your flower beds.
Do your research beforehand or chat
to an expert at your local garden store
to find out which is which.
JUST LISTED
DESIGNATED PLAY ZONES
Homeowners should make it clear to
their pet which areas are out of bounds
and which are entirely their own. For
example, homeowners can put up
chicken-wire fence or decorative flower
bed walls to keep pets out of their
garden beds. They can also create a
designated sand pit and leave their
pet’s chew toys inside to let Fluffy
know that’s his space to dig and play
as he pleases.
PET-APPROPRIATE FURNITURE
To keep your pet from chewing up
your outdoor furniture, avoid wooden
deck chairs and tables and opt instead
for aluminium or iron furniture. It might
also help to set up a pet bed next to
your outdoor set so that your furry
companion has a spot of his very own.
However you choose to go about
pet-proofing your garden, Goslett
encourages homeowners never to
sacrifice their pet’s health and wellness
in order to keep their garden in good
condition.
“Responsible pet owners would
rather see their garden somewhat
unkept than risk their pet getting hurt
on spiked flowerbed walls or dangerous
pet-repellents. If your garden is more
important to you than your pet, then
rather avoid adopting any animals,”
Goslett concludes.
CHDA looks at upskilling suppliers to develop
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
The Chris Hani Development Agency (CHDA)
hosted a suppliers’ day to assist small, medium
and micro enterprises at the Thobi Kula Indoor
Sports Complex recently.
CHDA acting CEO Nontobeko Nomnganga said,
“Municipalities usually use this event to inform
entrepreneurs about the most recent regulations,
changes or processes. Today we organised
stakeholders, such as Sars, banks and the office of
the Treasury, to give out information to empower
suppliers.”
Nomnganga said in 2019 the CHDA had sought
out a different way of assisting SMMEs to develop,
with presentations such as the incubation
programme from the office of the Treasury
introduced for them.
“I believe most people did not know about this
programme and we plan to grow the supplier day
programme by incorporating other key
components other than just arming them with
financial knowledge.
“We are also going to create a structure for
service providers where emerging suppliers such
as contractors, caterers, events and entertainment
businesses will be placed on databases,”
Nomnganga said.
“The plan is to also place local suppliers in an
incubation programme that will upskill them with
in-training based on their individual sectors.”
The acting CEO indicated that it remained
CHDA’s responsibility to develop the SMMEs after
the suppliers’ day where interactions with the
different businesses to determine their needs and
challenges would continue.
“We had a programme where Chris Hani District
Municipality executive mayor Kholiswa Vimbayo
had funded 10 SMMEs with R5m recently. Some of
the SMMEs had marketing issues and we helped
them with the branding of their organisations.”
“We have VanCleave companies, such as the
one in Cala, that have recently branched out to
Cradock and Black Spot in Komani – beginning to
stand on its feet as one of the companies we had
supported and which we plan to continue
supporting until they are a sustainable business.”
Nomnganga said they want to take the event to
other local municipal areas in Chris Hani from
2020 and that CHDA would be working closely
with municipalities in their local economic
development departments to see what gaps the
agency could fill to empower suppliers.
Msindwana assumes acting
spokesperson position in EMLM
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
Gcobani Msindwana is the new acting Enoch
Mgijima Local Municipality (EMLM) spokesperson.
This follows a period where local journalists
complained about uncertainty lack of clear
communication from the municipality since the
suspension of former spin doctor, Fundile
Fe ke t s h a n e ’s in January.
The news of Msindwana taking up acting duties
was announced on social media recently.
After Feketshane’s suspension, media queries
were referred to Msindwana as the EMLM
c o m m u n i c at i o n ’s officer.
However, after sometime the position was
occupied by EMLM executive mayor Sisisi Tolashe’s
spokesperson, Butsha Lali, on an acting basis.
Feketshane was given his suspension letter after
he returned to work from the December holidays.
Lali had indicated that Feketshane had received
three months’ precautionary suspension due to
alleged misconduct that bordered on the disclosure
of information without authorisation.
Fe ke t s h a n e ’s suspension followed the
suspension of municipal manager Chris
Magwangqana in October and former corporate
services director Siyabonga Nkonki’s resignation in
N o v e m b e r.
In the past few months, getting information from
the municipality has been a struggle, but with
Msindwana back in charge, it is hoped
communication will run smoothly.
Meanwhile, EMLM’s acting municipal manager
Gcubani Mashiyi, has indicated that over the past
12 months, the municipality has established
systems, procedures and controls that inform and
guide its operations.
Mashiyi said the council of Enoch Mgijima Local
Municipality appointed him to head the
administrative function of the municipality,
including the communications function in line with
municipal policy and the Municipal Financial
Management Act of 2003 and the Municipal
Systems Act of 2000.
“The communications department of EMLM is
properly functioning and performs its mandate as
derived from the Integrated Development Plan of
the municipality. All the officials in the unit perform
their duties, as derived from the council-approved
service delivery budget and implementation plan of
2018/2019 financial year,” he said.
“The systems established make it possible for the
communications unit to function optimally.”

SPAR Eastern Cape will
use the Women’s
Challenge in Port
Elizabeth next week to
introduce a new
weapon in their ongoing
fight for the
environment in the
bubbly figure of Zisa,
the STOP Plastic
campaign mascot.
Zisa will be present at
the Kids’ Challenge on
May 1 and the Women’s
Challenge 10km and
5km events at Pollok
Beach on May 4 to
remind all competitors
about the damage
plastic pollution is
causing in the world.
SPAR EC
sponsorships and
events manager Alan
Stapleton said this was
a wonderful opportunity
to maintain awareness
about the campaign in
a fun way.
“This will be the first
chance to introduce
Zisa to the people of
Nelson Mandela Bay,”
he said.
“Zisa will also be at
the Kids’ Challenge and
will be bringing some
surprise friends for all
the children taking part
to meet.”
The campaign got
under way a year ago
and besides the
awareness created by
figures such as SPAR
EC STOP Plastic
ambassador Sarah
Ferguson, the
immediate impact was
felt with 3-million fewer
plastic bags being sold
in the last few months
of 2018.
Now, said Stapleton,
they wanted to continue
educating the public
about their efforts and
to encourage all to join
in the fight.
“We have various
plans in place to keep
the Women’s Challenge
a litter-free event,” he
said.
“But more
importantly we want to
change mindsets about
how we use and re-use
plastic. Yes, we have a
plastic problem but it is
caused by a people
problem and we just
want to remind people
of the role they can
p l ay. ”
He added that STOP
Plastic bins would
“lit tered” all around the
course and at the start
and finish area. There
will also be some new
re-cycling bin stations.
“There will be more
than enough bins on
the route for runners to
throw their sachets
away, ” said Stapleton.
“We also want to
remind people that
there is an EP Athletics
Association rule that
runners can be
disqualified for littering
on the route.”
Netball teams battle it out at tournament
ZINTLE BOBELO
Unicorns Netball Club from
Sterkstroom took first prize at the
Chris Hani Easter Tournament held
at Thobi Kula Indoor Sport Centre on
M o n d ay.
The club which played in a final indoor
match against Komani-based netball
team Inkwenkwezi Netball Club beat their
opponents with a tight score of 13-12.
The Unicorns went home with a R1,500
cash prize, a trophy and gold medals.
Inkwenkwezi occupied second place
and received R,000 and silver medals for
all team players.
The one-day tournament had seven
netball clubs including Cosmos, Tarka
Spain, Tarka Stars, Komani Saps and
Eagles.
Sesona Ngciki of the Molteno-based
Cosmos was named player of the
tournament. The best defender award
went to Siyahluma Hlahla of Inkwenkwezi
and top scorer was Nwabisa Ngxathu
also from Inkwenkwezi.
Chris Hani District Netball Association
chairperson and Unicorns netball coach
Zukiswa Witbooi said dedication and
enthusiasm were some of the qualities
displayed by the players during the event
making it a success.
“These tournaments assist us
especially with the recruitment process
where we always identify the strongest
players who will represent us in the
championships. Currently, our focus is
more on the U19 who are now preparing
for the national championship games
which will take place in Cape Town.”
Witbooi applauded all teams that
par ticipated.
Inkwenkwezi coach Siyasanga Mselana
said although they did not retain first
position, the team was excited to have
been awarded for winning second place
and regarded themselves as winners.
“The tournament was exciting. We
started very well and we did stick to our
game plan during the round robins up to
the finals. We were practising four days a
week and we had morning sessions
dedicated for preparation on weekends.
“However, we were rushing throughout
which I think that is what led to the loss.”
Mselana said the team will be working on
a few changes and will be refocusing
their game plan for the next games.
Last weekend cricket fans were left
disappointed when the Komani T20
Easter tournament which was
supposed to be played at Dumpy
Adams Complex was cancelled
because Sunday and Monday were
rained out.
No games were played on
Saturday as some teams were
participating in a separate
tournament.
Fr i d ay ’s fixtures were the only
ones played, defending champions
Vintage XI losing by eight wickets
to Warriors and Siseko Dalamba
winning by five wickets against
Bangladesh Cricket Club.
On the other side, Sada Cricket
Club hosted a tournament to
honour Zandile Gwana, who is
credited with cricket development
in Whittlesea. It was played on
Saturday. Four teams participated:
Sada Cricket Club, Siseko
Dalamba, The Warriors and
Dongwe Cricket Club.
It was mired in controversy after
Siseko Dalamba wanted to field
players that did not play in the
local league. The tournament was
supposed to start at 09:00 but was
delayed till 12 noon after rules had
to be reaffirmed and Warriors
players disqualified.
Sada lost against The Warriors
and Dalamba won against Dongwe,
setting a final of the two Komani
clubs.
It was worn by Warriors after
they bowled out Dalamba for 71.
They clinched it on the final over
with only a ball to spare.
The sponsors were Asanda
Mdwayi and Hewu Funeral
Parlours. Prizes included a live
sheep.

Controversy mars celebrations
MAXWELL LEVINE
Yet another Komani
rugby tournament ended
in controversy last
weekend, after Breakers
were handed the
winner’s cheque and
trophies after only 20
minutes into the game.
Play had to be stopped
due to a player swearing
at referee Mxolisi Mbi,
who then refused to
continue blowing the
game under such provocative
circumstances.
At the time Breakers
were leading 10-3 against
Wallabies in the final.
Komani is becoming
infamously known as a
disruptive community
when it comes to
tournaments, with this
trend of tournaments not
finishing becoming a sad
norm.
Last month, in the
Twizza Derby Cup,
referee Herman Venter
was verbally abused and
had alcohol thrown at
him after the final
whistle in a match
between Breakers and
Old Collegians.
The referee in that
match claimed he feared
for his life after pointing
out that a section of the
Breakers supporters
were baying for his
blood.
Two years ago, ugly
scenes occurred in the
African Pioneer
Tournament hosted by
Breakers as sit-ins and
dissatisfaction was the
order of the day at
Mlungisi Stadium.
Three years ago,
teams participating in a
tournament at the same
venue never received
their winnings, leaving a
lot of teams not wanting
to honour tournaments in
Komani.
Fears have already
surfaced that the
Queenstown Referee
Society is planning not to
honour league matches
involving Breakers, Old
Collegians and Shining
Stars in protest of the
shady and abusive
treatment at the hands of
local teams.
Players and
management of local
teams have been banned
before, but it seems that
they have not learnt from
previous actions.
Tournament director,
Mawethu Maseti, said,
“We are extremely
disappointed how things
ended. I feel for Shining
Stars management as it
took months to plan and
prepare for this
tournament.
“To look for funding to
plan one’s 60th
anniversary celebrations
is not easy, then a few
individuals spoil the
party in a matter of
minutes.”
Wa l l a b i e s ’ Loyiso
Simon was clearly
dissatisfied about how
proceedings were
handled over the
weekend, especially the
r e fe r e e i n g .
Judging by the
number of entries to the
tournament, it is clear
that teams from outside
Komani still do not trust
local teams’
organisational and
administ rative
capabilities.
Some in the rugby
fraternity believe that in
order to change this
ongoing mindset,
Komani rugby
administrators must
stand up and pave a
positive way forward to
lure teams from outside
to their tournaments.
Only four teams
registered in the A
section – Breakers, Old
Collegians, Shining Stars
and Wallabies, the only
team from outside,
coming from Sutterheim.
In the B Section
Progress and Shining
Stars B were the only
two teams.
The day kicked off with
Breakers beating Shining
Stars in the A section
36-6.
Wallabies won 26-12
against OC in the second
match. In the o n c e - of f
final between Progress
and Shining Stars B,
Progress eased to a 19-0
win and for their efforts
won a cool R10,000 and
a trophy. Shining Stars B
walked away with R5,000
and a trophy.
The next match saw
Old Collegians succumb
to a close 17-14 loss to
hosts Shining Stars.
In the last match on
Saturday, Breakers was
too good for Wallabies,
winning 19-12.
On the final day on
Sunday, Wallabies made
sure of their place in the
final with a 26-14 win
over Shining Stars.
Breakers annihilated
Old Collegians 42-0 in
the second match.
The final was marred
by controversy as
Breakers were made the
winners after the match
was abandoned by
referee who refused to
continue with the match
after verbal abuse.
After an agreement
was reached between
both the management of
Breakers, Wallabies and
the tournament director,
Breakers was awarded
first prize of R20,000 and
a trophy, with Wallabies
receiving R10,000 and a
t rophy.
THE WINNERS: Breakers were awarded the first prize in the Shining Stars 60th Celebrations Easter Tournament A Section
Parkrun attracts scores of visitors
Last Saturday, 117 people ran, jogged and walked the course
Congratulations to Martie Lee who completed 50 parkruns
In the event there were 16 regulars who recorded
personal-best times.
