The Secretary’s Jottings
Good afternoon everyone.
We welcome the match officials and our visitors for this last match of the 2018 2019 season
who are our good friends from Guernsey.
This message is a little bit different than the normal last games of the season because of the
position that Guernsey find themselves in at the moment where they really need at least one
point from this game. It may be however that because of other influences, today's Match may
be meaningless, as it is still possible that with other step 4 teams dropping out around the
country no team will be relegated from this division . For more information on this see Peters
notes further on in the program.
These are my first notes for a few weeks because I've been away on holiday and despite very
limited Wi-Fi have kept up with all the goings-on in the Bostik league. I was obviously delighted,
that despite a poor run of results, Sittingbourne managed to get away from the foot of the
table. Since Chris took over we have all seen new optimism for the future.
Chris and his team now have the task of building Sittingbourne football club for hopefully a
crack at the title or at least play-offs for next season.
Chris has the full support of the board and we are confident that we have the right man to
lead us to success in the future.
It's been an up-and-down season for the Brickies as Tony Rickson testifies further on in the
programme. Aslan Odev did his best and worked tirelessly to find a winning combination. Unfortunately
his efforts were in vain but I'd like to personally wish Aslan all the best for the future
and I'm sure that what he's learnt from his experience with us will hold him in good stead
for his next managerial job.
We have a great bunch of people here at Sittingbourne. Certainly some of, if not the best,
supporters in the league and certainly a managerial team that we, as a board, are very
pleased with.
At this time of the season there are so many people to thank. So many help me do my job,
people like Faye and Jackie on the turnstiles. Our stewards who are so helpful on match
days and also 1tother times when we need them.
I would also like to thank our Chairman , Maurice Dunk, who goes above and beyond what
would be expected of him being a football chairman. Make no mistake without Mo and Woodstock
there would be no Sittingbourne football club. Also at Woodstock we have one of the
nicest people I've met in the shape of Phil who runs the Woodstock club. Nothing is too much
trouble for him and he and his team are certainly one of the reasons why our hospitality is as
respected as it is. Talking of hospitality I would like to thank my wife Sandra, who manages
the boardroom, and she is another reason clubs enjoy the hospitality we provide. Thanks also
to Ken, Glen and Mick for assisting when needed and providing hot food.
Hope to see you all again next season we have our first friendly booked, which is away at
Sheppey United on *the 16th July.
Keep a look out on our Twitter feed and on our website for more pre season friendlies
Don’t forget that our first team presentations take place after today’s game. Also We have an
early bird offer on season ticket renewals where you save £5 on last seasons prices if you
take out your season ticket up to the 31st July. Forms are available from Jackie.
See you all next season and thanks for supporting the Brickies.
John

From the Programme Editor
So we reach our last match of the season and
the final programme of the season, so its time
to thank all those who have contributed to it,
and of course to all of you who buy it. Some
clubs now only produce an electronic copy but
I believe that a printed match day programme
is part of the football experience!
My first thank you goes to Tony Rickson who
consistently produces class match reports
honed by his vast experience of being sports
editor of the local East Kent Gazette stable of
local newspapers. Next is our First Team manager
Chris Lynch who gives his review of the
is done by the secretary and his wife Sandra,
so thanks to them. Talking of the production of
the programme I also give a big thank you to
Kieran Payne for supplying much of the paper
that the programme is printed on. Thanks also
to Ken Medwyn for his photographs and finally
a big thank you to Jackie Mount for selling
them.
Plenty of thanks are also elsewhere in this programme
together with a retrospective look
back of the season by Tony Rickson.
You have to be prepared for late changes to
the programme when you are programme editor
and just as I was about to print, the news
that Greenwich Borough had been docked 3
points came in so it meant a hurried change to
the league table—it’s a good job we print our
own programmes!
I haven’t got room to include a page on promotion
and relegation in this copy so will use
my notes to update you . This season at step 4
two of the 7 play off winners will miss out because
there aren’t enough vacant places at
step 3. The 5 play off winners to go up will be
based on the points per game in their respective
leagues. Next season there is to be an extra
step 4 league that will be part of the Northern
Premier League set up. However instead of
making things, worse promotion is back to normal
next season with the Champions and play
off winners of the step 4 leagues being promoted.
This is being made possible by more relegations
at step 3:- The Bottom two step 3 sides
from each division will be relegated to Step 4.
Another two “third bottom” clubs will be relegated
on a Points Per Game (PPG) basis. If there
are any reprieves available then one of the relegated
PPG sides will get that reprieve. The
bottom club of each division will not be eligible
for a reprieve
At Step 4, the bottom side will go into a playoff
against a Step 5 side. The match will be hosted
by the Step 4 side and the winner will play at
Step 4 the following season with the loser playing
at Step 5. Are you still with me!
performance like no other manager has done
in all the 20+ years that I have been involved
with the club. Some printing and proof reading
Finally have a great close season and come
back fresh to Sittingbourne FC next season!
.
Peter

Guernsey— A Brief History
Guernsey Football Club was formed in 2011 to
offer the island's elite footballers the opportunity
to progress and test themselves on a regular
basis outside of the Channel Islands. The
proposal to establish the club and seek to join
the English national league pyramid system was
developed by the Guernsey Football Association
in an attempt to further advance development
opportunities for the island's current and
future players by playing at higher levels on a
regular basis.
We are an independent, community amateur
football club which play in the Bostik Isthmian
League Division One South at Step Four in
English football's non-league pyramid system.
The club is owned and run for the benefit of the
local Guernsey community and it plays its home
games at the Footes Lane Stadium.
The club's vision is to create, develop and maintain
a sustainable, successful, financially viable,
democratic football club that creates and maintains
real and lasting benefit to its members and
the local Guernsey community. We are a registered
charity and will remain a non-profit organisation
with any financial surpluses being re- invested
for the future viability of the club and
hence the benefit of the local community.
The initial idea to establish Guernsey FC was
developed during the 2009-10 season when
Guernsey's Senior County Division One
representative side enjoyed a successful run
in the FA National League System Cup (for
league representative sides at Step Seven on
the non-league pyramid system and below,
since renamed the FA Inter-League Cup), culminating
in Guernsey beating the Liverpool
County Premier League 5-2 in the final in May
2010. Along the way, Guernsey defeated representative
sides from the Kent County Premier
League, the Northampton Premier League, the
Southern Amateur League, the Hertfordshire
Premier League and the Dorset Premier
League. The final was held in Guernsey in front
of a crowd of over 2,500 and was the first time
ever that the FA had allowed one of its competition
finals to be held outside of the UK mainland.
Following a 1-0 victory over Jersey to reclaim
the Muratti Vase in May 2010, the prize for winning
the FA National League System Cup for
this same squad of players was to represent
England in the UEFA Regions Cup preliminary
round in Croatia in September 2010.
This was a fantastic experience for the players
and coaching and medical staff and, although
Guernsey enjoyed mixed fortunes by beating
Wales 3-0, drawing with hosts Croatia 1-1 and
losing to group winners Turkey 3-0, it provided
football at a higher standard, was very motivational
and gave our players a great desire to improve
further and to play more regularly at higher
levels.
Over the course of the following few months,
the club's founding directors, Steve Dewsnip
and Mark Le Tissier, received encouragement
from the Football Association, the Guernsey FA,
the Combined Counties League (which we were
introduced to by the FA), our former official
main club sponsor Sportingbet, the island's government
(the States of Guernsey) and the island's
local football community to develop our
plans for the new club further and were delighted
when the member clubs of the Combined
Counties League voted by a significant majority
on 20 June 2011 to allow Guernsey FC to join
Division One of their league.
Although our club is very young, football in
Guernsey has a long history dating back to
1893 when the Guernsey FA was established
and since then has produced several players
who have graced the highest levels of the
English professional game, including Bill
Spurdle (Manchester City), Richard Le Flem
(Nottingham Forest & England U23), Ron
Farmer (Coventry City), Len Duquemin
(Tottenham Hotspur) and, more recently and
more famously, our former club president Matt
Le Tissier (Southampton and England).
Guernsey — A Brief History Cont
Saturday 6th August 2011 was a historic day for
Guernsey FC and the island in general when
the club played its inaugural game at Footes
Lane against Knaphill FC in the Combined
Counties League Division One. That historic
day turned into an historic season with the club
winning the league title, having lost only 2 of its
34 league matches, with a 7-1 win against second-placed
Bedfont Sports in front of 2,143
supporters at Footes Lane in March 2012 and
then going on to secure the double in its first
season by winning the Combined Counties
Premier Challenge Cup following a 2-0 victory
after extra-time over Premier Division side Colliers
Wood United.
The 2012-13 season was a tough campaign.
The Green Lions reached the semi-finals of the
FA Carlsberg Vase in the club’s first season in
the competition, breaking its record attendance
twice in the historic run. A crowd of 4,290 was
at Footes Lane for the semi-final first leg
against Spennymoor Town. The league campaign
saw countless postponed fixtures due to
adverse weather and the cup run. In April,
Guernsey FC played a staggering 16
games in 30 days. The May bank holiday
weekend saw GFC play four games in four
days and remarkably secure all 12 points to finish
second in the Combined Counties Premier
League and gain promotion to the Ryman Isthmian
League
The club's first season in the Ryman Isthmian
League ended in a respectable fourth place but
we lost 3-2 away to Leatherhead in the play-off
semi-final. During the 2013/14 season the
Green Lions also became the first team from
the Channel Islands to play in the FA Cup,
when they took on Crawley Down Gatwick
away on 31st August 2013. GFC won the game
3-1 but went out in the 2nd qualifying round to
Conference South’s Dover Athletic 3-2.
Guernsey's second season in Ryman South
was much tougher. Injuries and unavailability
left the Green Lions struggling through October
and November and it wasn't until just before
Christmas that results picked up. The Green
Lions eventually finished 10th in the league before
many of the squad were part of the Guernsey
FA gold-medal winning side at the 2015
NatWest Island Games in Jersey.
Despite some indifferent form in the first half of
the 2015-16 season, the Green Lions found
themselves third in the table in the new year
and equalled their Ryman South unbeaten record
of nine games. A six-game losing run
though saw our play-off challenge fade away.
However Robbie Legg becoming the club's
youngest goalscorer at 16 when he netted
against Whyteleafe in March. GFC were finally
drawn at home in the FA Cup against Lewes in
the first qualifying round, but unfortunately a replay
defeat to Phoenix Sports in the preliminary
round meant they were unable to fulfil that particular
goal. We beat our points total and wins
total from the previous season, but finished
13th.
The 2016-17 season was GFC's most challenging
yet as they battled against relegation for the
first time in their history. It took until the end of
September to secure the first victory of the
campaign and bad luck hit Tony Vance's squad
with several lengthy injuries and absences to
key players. They didn't manage to win
home game after Christmas, but finally ended
their winless away run (that had gone on for
over a year and nearly 30 matches) when they
beat Chipstead in February and, ironically, it
was their away results that kept them up as two
more wins and a draw were enough to keep
them ahead of their rivals. There was change
off the field as Mark Le Tissier took over as
Chairman, but the main highlight was the FA
Cup coming to Guernsey for the first time in August
amidst a tremendous fanfare that included
the famous trophy being displayed at Footes
Lane. Dave Rihoy’s second-half brace in the
first ever FA-Cup match to be contested outside
the mainland secured a replay, but GFC eventually
went out on penalties at Thamesmead
Town. More youngsters made an impact as
Thomas Dodds went on to become a key player
having only made his debut at the start of the
campaign at just 17 years of age. He went on to
scoop five awards at the end-of-season gala.

From the Chairman
Another season comes to an end and we continue to move forward together as a group making
closer ties and relationships with our players, management, fans, helpers and committee members.
Thanks to you all for your help.
Thanks to Chris Lynch and his management team for doing what we asked by keeping us in the
division with relegation looking very much on the cards. The whole club is looking forward to
starting next season with Chris at the helm. Very exciting times ahead.
Thanks to the fans which are easily the best in our league. They are always our 12th man and
never give up. All the time we have them we will have a good club. It is great we have the supporters
club up and running again and Mark Chapman has done a splendid job getting our
crowds up and awareness of the Team.
Thanks to my committee. Don't think I could get a more dedicated group of volunteers. The time
money and effort you put in is priceless. Special thanks to Roger Pudner and his ground team
for their splendid work.
Thanks to all the match day helpers, stewards, turnstile boardroom hospitality and fund raising.
Our welcome to other clubs is always first class.
Sadly, we have lost two Brickie heroes this year. Our President Alan Crowshaw and our Boardroom
fundraiser Sonya Crayford. Alan selling cans and paying referees from his own funds is a
big loss as are the great conversations I had with him Alan always sat in the same place and
this summer we will put a bench there in his honour. Sonya’s fund raising was fantastic and the
new changing rooms will be named after her as per the builder’s request.
The boardroom hospitality, lottery and various other roles within the club that never get mentioned
fall upon another unsung hero Sandra Pitts and Sandra was the winner of my first Chairman’s
award this year.
Thanks to all the input from our fantastic ladies’ teams with additional thanks to Ian Jackson for
all the extra stuff he does for us.
The youth teams and development squad continue to go from strength to strength and special
thanks to Glen Parkes and Michael Sayce for all their hard work. This has been a year where
we have grown closer together and thanks to Ashleigh Taylor and many others for the enthusiasm
which pulls us along.
Another guy from the youth and development set up to come to the fore is Greg Mchardy.
Faced with relegation because our dressing rooms were too small Greg and his guys have put
in place dressing rooms that are the best in the league. A very easy decision for me is to announce
that my second Chairman’s award this year goes to Greg who along with Chris Lynch
has kept us in the division!
Another season is over and we get to work now to attract more sponsors and others to the club
in order that we can get some success that our loyal fans and helpers truly deserve. Have a
good summer.
Tony Rickson looks back on Sittingbourne’s season
634 people – the biggest crowd to watch a Sittingbourne
match this season – fell silent when
Tom Loynes scored the opening goal in the
match at Guernsey back in September.
The only noise you could hear was Loynes
himself cheering in his goal – he later scored
the winner, too, with an excellent finish to complete
a 2-1 victory and a great day out.
What was missing, of course, was the cheers
of the Sittingbourne fans as uncertainty over
whether the match would go ahead meant
they couldn’t book flights until the last minute
and any cheap ones had gone. Such a shame
for them to miss a trip they’ve always loved.
Apart from that one afternoon on the Channel
Islands, the season has otherwise been
played out to the noise, full-voiced singing and
general exuberance of a very loyal group of
supporters.
Continued on the next page.

Tony Rickson looks back on Sittingbourne’s season—Cont
They say Sittingbourne are the best supported
team in the league and having seen every one of
their matches, home and away, I have to agree
that they’ve never been out-sung or out-shouted.
But what I like even more is that Sittingbourne’s
fans are always positive. They don’t moan about
tactics, team selections, substitutions, mistakes –
they just get on with what they see as their job to
offer their whole-hearted support and treat every
setback as an opportunity to hope for something
better the following game.
To me, the fans have been the stars of this season.
Followed closely by the club committee. Sittingbourne
FC is lucky to have a team of decent,
honourable, level-headed, likeable people who
give their time and energy to running the club.
And never take that for granted - you don’t have to
look very far to see other clubs running out of money,
pulling out altogether, or ripped apart by rows
fed by social media squabbles.
So, hopefully, it’s onwards and upwards for Sittingbourne
next season under a progressive and
ambitious manager in Chris Lynch, who won’t rest
until he’s turned a club bulging with promise into
one that’s successful on the field.
As for this season, it’s been full of ups and downs,
good spells followed by bad ones, exciting moments
cancelled out by games to forget.
Though it all started so well. For the opening game
away at sunny Horsham, Sittingbourne looked very
well organised, were full of running, and deservedly
won against a team who turned out to be one of
the very best in the league. There was one moment
when Bola Dawodu and Ira Jackson combined
with a passing move that looked so smart
and intuitive you really felt Sittingbourne could go
places this season.
Champions-in-waiting Cray Wanderers halted the
winning start to the league season, and Gosport
Borough gave Sittingbourne an early exit from the
FA Cup, but good wins against Whyteleafe and
then that away victory at Guernsey showed the
Brickies looked like they were going to be a force
this season.
Tommy Fagg secured an away draw in a night
game against Ashford with a thunderous goal, and
there was a comfortable win at Faversham in the
FA Trophy, but suddenly Sittingbourne couldn’t get
a win for love nor money.
In the middle of a horrible run of 13 league defeats,
there was just one success – an unexpectedly
easy 4-1 win over Sevenoaks in truly horrendous
conditions just before Christmas.
Players drifted away and a nightmare five first half
goals for Hastings United in the New Year spelt the
end of the year-long management of Aslan Odev,
a good man with lots of good ideas but possibly
not enough experience to keep a team together.
In came Lynch, and how welcome was it that a
group of loyal players stuck with him. Leading
them as always was Chris Webber, a great captain
all season, with others including Loynes, Lewis
Chambers, Patrick Lee, Fagg, and Lex Allan,
though by now he was out with a horrible injury.
The manager had to find replacements, and quickly,
so it was no surprise that his first three matches
ended in defeat as Sittingbourne continued to drift
perilously downwards towards a relegation position.
Then came the miracle recovery. Six wins in the
next seven games and back up to the middle of the
table. There was a great victory at VCD with a couple
of terrific goals by Chris Barnard, a seven-goal
thriller at Phoenix which started it all off, a sparkling
5-0 win under floodlights at outplayed Three
Bridges, a late winner by Liam Middleton at Sevenoaks,
and at last some wins at Woodstock for
home fans to enjoy.
The bubble burst just as quickly and six straight
defeats followed, with injured key players like
Chambers and Loynes badly missed, and strong
defender Ben Fitchett recalled by his parent club.
Who wins five in a row and then loses the next six?
That can’t have happened to many teams over the
years.
That run of losses was halted with a determined
recovery in the Easter Monday match at Herne
Bay, Sittingbourne battling back for an honourable
draw.
Despite the setbacks this season has brought,
hope springs eternal, and bet your life we’ll all be
back in August thinking: This might just be the season
when we achieve something. It’s been, after
all, quite a wait …

From the Manager
Dear Supporters over recent months (Since my
arrival) I have been humbled by your support for
the team, the club, my management staff and
myself.
Part of the reason I agreed to come here in January
was the fantastic potential I could see and
how much it meant to the people to once again
be a successful team.
I can assure you we have some of the best people
continually working behind the scenes here
to ensure this club is successful, from the Chairman/Secretary/Board/Committee/Staff/Youth
Set
Up/Volunteers and Matchday helpers.
It has been a privilege for me to be here and share some special moments with you, especially
the six game winning streak which ensured our survival.
It brings me great pleasure to say.. we have achieved our goal.. we are safe. At one point we
were very close to doing so with five games to spare going into the Greenwich fixture, unfortunately
we had to wait a little longer before we were guaranteed that all important status of Bostik
League participants once again for Season 2019/20.
I have sent a message to both the Greenwich and Guernsey management teams this morning
wishing them the very best for the future and ensuring them both that we will be doing our best
to finish our season on a positive note with three additional points come the final whistle today.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all, I can assure you we are working extremely
hard as we speak to improve a number of areas going forwards into next season throughout the
club. This includes first team player recruitment, working hard to attract additional financial support
from sponsors, and building on the existing youth set up. The future is bright and all the time
I am here we will push for the stars.
Hopefully the people of Sittingbourne and our supporters everywhere have come out in force
today to share with us the last 90 minutes of this season, we will go out as strong as possible
and look to finish with a win for you.
Then get prepared for lots of changes next season as we are going have a real go. Exciting
times ahead.
Thank you all once again.
Match Reports by Tony Rickson
Saturday 20th April 2019
Bostik South East
Sittingbourne 0 Hastings United 3, att 264
The good news is that Sittingbourne are definitely
staying up this season and will have another
bash at Bostik League South East when
August comes around.
The bad news is that this was a sixth successive
defeat, and they’ve come up so short in
the last three games against top-half teams
that altogether they’ve let in 12 goals while
scoring just one.
None of the teams around them at the wrong
end of the table won, and Greenwich Borough’s
0-0 draw means they can’t possibly
overhaul Sittingbourne’s total of 35 points (half
of which was gained in one mad spell soon after
Chris Lynch took over as manager).
Already assured of their place in the end-ofseason
play-offs, Hastings proved effective
and determined opposition, even though they
played a lot of route one stuff and relied enormously
on set pieces and especially long
throws.
Sittingbourne weren’t outclassed in the way
they were when they lost 5-0 away to Hastings
in January, and battled hard to stay in the
game, especially for much of the second half
when they were only two-down.
But they’re still coming up short against the
better teams at this level and there’s plenty of
work for Lynch to do to really make a go of it
next season.
It was summer weather at Woodstock, with
beautiful clear blue skies, and Sittingbourne
made four changes from the team that lost 3-0
at Whyteleafe the previous week.
Roman Campbell and Jack Morrell were released
back by Gillingham to play, and Kwasi
Amoah and Liam Middleton were given starting
spots.
Skipper Chris Webber again started in midfield,
while Josh Spencer, Kane Phillip and Billy
Lewins went down to the bench, and Johan
Caney-Bryan was out injured.
Nothing much to choose between the sides for
the opening spell as Sittingbourne threaded
together a few decent moves with Middleton
shooting past the far post and the Hastings
keeper failing to get hold of a powerful 25-
yarder from the energetic Chris Barnard.
As in the game at Hastings, Black’s enormous
throw-ins were one of their main threats. He
throws it a lot further than even Lewis Chambers,
and every ball kicked out in the opposition
half was launched straight into the six-yard
area.
One throw was going straight into goal under
the bar in the 25th minute before Patrick Lee
turned it over, but from the resulting corner
Hastings took the lead, a long ball beyond the
far post headed back across goal for Rodari to
score from close in. Hastings used this over-hit
corner in the home game against Sittingbourne
so it was irritating to see the tactic used effectively
again.
Five minutes later and Hastings doubled their
lead when Azeez got possession on the halfway
line and simply raced through the middle
of the home defence to score a fine individual
goal. This one was irritating, too, as the referee
seemed to miss a clear foul on the frequentlymanhandled
Campbell that gave Hastings the
ball in the first place.
Sittingbourne stayed in the game well and had
a lot of the ball for the first 20 minutes of the
second half. Barnard headed over and had a
decent chance blocked, Henry Wood fired the
ball across goal and Campbell had a powerful
free-kick from distance that the keeper could
only punch away.
The next goal was going to be crucial and Hastings
got it midway through the half. Again it
was one of those mighty throw-ins that got the
ball into the danger area and tricky sub Ajakaiye
dummied a defender to set himself up for a
neatly-taken goal.
It was game over from then really and Lee was
the star of the final few minutes, making one
terrific save and three good ones in quick succession
to keep out more Hastings’ efforts.
Sometimes it seems as if the more Sittingbourne
struggle, the more their fans get behind
them, and they certainly out-sang a good
number from Hastings who helped swell the
attendance to the third largest home crowd of
the season.
So at least that was one match Sittingbourne
won, and surely they stand a good chance of
ending their losing run on the pitch, too, as
they face Herne Bay and bottom-of-the-league
Guernsey in their final two matches of the season.
Sittingbourne: Patrick Lee (Yellow card),
Match Reports by Tony Rickson
Easter Monday 22nd April 2019
Bostik South East
Herne Bay 1 Sittingbourne 1, att 408
It’s a long time since Sittingbourne fought back
from a goal down to get something from a
game, so good for them for returning from Herne
Bay with a point from their exertions on a
warm bank holiday afternoon.
It was nothing less than they deserved, but this
game had a bit of an air of a low-key end-ofseason
encounter with the edge gone, as both
teams are finally free from the threat of relegation
that has hung over them for far too long.
Amazingly, it was Sittingbourne’s first draw in
31 matches as they’d got used to winning lots
of games in a row (five at one stage), or doing
the opposite (six successive defeats going into
this match).
They made two changes from the team that
started against Hastings 48 hours earlier, Josh
Spencer and Izzy Adebayo in place of Kwasi
Amoah and Timmie Babbington, who both got
their chances to come on as substitutes.
It was a lovely afternoon down by the seaside
and Herne Bay, who have had a much better
second half to the season than they did the
first half, took the lead after less than three
minutes.
A corner from the left was played back into the
danger zone by Bay captain Ben Gorham –
one of five ex-Sittingbourne players in their line
-up. It was returned from the far post into the
middle where Addy scored a simple goal.
Not surprisingly given their recent poor run of
results, Sittingbourne seem to take it hard
when they concede a goal but they gradually
worked their way back into the game with
some decent possession, though too many
long passes forward were overhit and simply
ran out of play down the slight slope.
Both Adebayo and Liam Middleton couldn’t get
the ball from under their feet when given a
chance in the opposition penalty area, and the
closest Sittingbourne got in the first half was
when Tommy Fagg, restored to a midfield role,
hit a fierce piledriver from a good distance that
Overland did well to keep out.
Bay used their speedy attackers to hit
Sittingbourne on the break and Patrick Lee
had to make a good save when Schafer broke
free and Lex Allan, again a tower of strength in
defence, hooked the ball off the line when Bay
counter-attacked direct from their own corner.
Sittingbourne had even more of the play in the
second half and Henry Woods couldn’t make
the most of it when Roman Campbell set him
up and Jack Morrell shot narrowly wide after a
good run cut open the Bay defence.
The pressure was mounting and Sittingbourne
made it pay midway through the half when
Babbington skipped free from Woods’ headed
pass and when he tried to cut the ball back
from a narrow angle, it struck first Gorham and
then keeper Overland to find its way into the
net.
Bay were still dangerous in the odd break, Lee
again coming out well to save from Schafer,
while at the other end Babbington might well
have forced an injury time penalty with a shot
that hit a defender’s hand, and then he was
twice foiled by blocks as he drove in follow-up
shots.
So Sittingbourne finished their away programme
in front of the third largest crowd to
watch them play this season with a fairly respectable
record of six wins and a couple of
draws.
Just today’s game left now, with second from
bottom-placed Guernsey the visitors. They’ve
got everything to play for still, while Sittingbourne
could at least walk off into their
summer break with heads held high if they
maintain the energy and determination that got
them a point from this game.
Sittingbourne: Patrick Lee, Chris Webber,
Jack Morrell, Lex Allan, Josh Spencer, Tommy
Fagg, Izzy Adebayo (Kane Phillip, 55 min),
Chris Barnard, Roman Campbell, Henry
Woods (Kwasi Amoah, 79 min), Liam Middleton
(Timmy Babbington, 33 min). Subs not
used: Khalil McFarlane, Tom Lawrence.
