Dear Readers, 

Changing times 

I had a lovely message from Jonathan last month, I am glad you enjoyed reading my 

article and here is the answer to your question. You can read my pages from previous

This month I had to take a step back in time. I am writing this article today on a laptop 

which is older than my 9 year old dog as regrettably on a recent trip away, my normal 

laptop broke and I am waiting for Lenovo to come and repair it. I was dreading making 

the service call as my Spanish isn’t great but it was actually very simple and could be 

done online. However, the machine I am presently using is about 10 years old and 

running Windows 7 which I love. I had forgotten some of the nice things about this 

programme having moved to Windows 10 some time ago. 

Anyway, yesterday was my twin girls’ fourth birthdays. I have been thinking about how 

their lives have changed in the last four years, and equally how things have changed in 

the PC world. In 2015 Apple Pay became commonplace on new iPhones and I don’t 

know where I would be without it now. I often leave my “man bag” at home when 

shopping or eating out and just take my phone as it’s so easy to make secure 

payments. Smart devices started to take off and the introduction of “Smart Home” 

devices became available to the common man. Alexa and Google Home came out the 

year before, and the technology in the area of VA (virtual assistants) exploded 

overnight. Only this year Amazon announced they have sold over 100 million devices. 

We have an abundance of smart devices now. We were away last week, and I logged in 

to the CCTV system to make sure everything was OK, turned on different lights around 

the house, remotely turned on Alexa to play music reasonably loudly and we even 

spoke to the bird, much to his surprise! 

I wonder where we will be in four years’ time? Things are progressing so fast and there 

are a number of predictions. Solar technology will increase massively, electric cars will 

be everywhere (not hybrids), high speed space travel and even AI (artificial intelligence) 

could be in every shopping center. Will we have any privacy? What do you think?

A competitor’s impressions on 

the Lands End Trials from 1929 

….. Entering the check at Lynmouth we were 

immediately signalled on, and continued our 

climb of Lynmouth Hill, keeping well over to the 

right. 

BEGGARS ROOST We were delayed for a few 

minutes on Barbrook Mill, and on being signalled 

on, moved up to the starting line for the climb of 

Beggars Roost. The re-start here this year was 

with the front wheels, definitely on the "gradient" 

and on being given the signal to •• go " we 

began our climb in the first gear, in which we 

remained until well over the dreaded hump. The 

surface of Beggars Roost this year was certainly 

in bad condition, and the crowds on the left so 

great that few competitors had a chance of 

missing the hump. These two reasons probably 

account for so many failures, one in five failing. 

After climbing Beggars Roost, we found the 

refreshments at Lyn Cross very welcome whilst 

waiting for the time to re-start. …..

£30m of transport infrastructure approved 

More than £30 million of major transport infrastructure was approved by Devon 

County Council’s Cabinet in April. The programme of transport schemes aims to 

deliver infrastructure priorities across the county and continues support for 

sustainable travel to encourage growth in walking, cycling and public transport. 

Relevant to the North Devon area are the following schemes: 

 

 

 

Preparatory work will continue on the Full Business Case for improvements to 

the North Devon Link Road after the Outline Business Case was approved last 

summer. Walking and cycling routes are also being improved. 

Designs are being drawn up for a planning application for a pedestrian and 

cycle bridge at Seven Brethren in Barnstaple which will support the 

development of an east-west cycle route across the town. 

Pedestrian crossing improvements will be provided on the A379 Rydon Lane, 

Landkey Road in Barnstaple 

The programme of improvements in Devon uses a range of grant funding including 

the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership Growth Deal, Housing 

Infrastructure Fund, National Productivity Investment Fund, Growth and Housing, 

Safer Roads Fund, Large Local Majors Fund and Major Road Network.

retirement. Isabel has served as a nurse for 45 years, 11 of which have been here in

Diabetic Reviews 

There has been a change to the way we will be conducting reviews for diabetics this 

year. You will be contacted to make your appointment for your blood test by our Patient 

Service Team. Please bring along a urine sample to your blood test appointment 

(specimen pots are available to collect from reception). Following your blood test you 

will be contacted again by Patient Services who will book you in for your Diabetic Review 

with the nurses. You will have a patient plan to complete before this appointment and 

bring with you to the appointment. This will be available to collect from reception prior 

to your appointment. 

Local Groups and Clubs ….Please Help! 

Our Patient Group are assisting us with a project to advertise the local groups and clubs 

in our practice area. If you run any of these could you supply us with the name of the 

group, meeting times and contact details. These will be displayed in the waiting room.

What would you do to improve local health services? 

With growing pressure on the NHS – people living longer, more people living with longterm 

conditions, and lifestyle choices affecting people’s health – changes are needed 

to make sure everybody gets the support they need. 

The NHS has produced a ten-year plan setting out all of the things it wants health 

services to do better for people across the country. Now your local NHS needs to hear 

from you about what those changes should look like in your community. Healthwatch in 

Devon, Torbay and Plymouth are working together on a special consultation entitled 

‘What would you do?’– to encourage people to share their views about what changes to 

NHS services should look like locally. 

As part of the Long Term Plan, people are being asked for their views about how 

support services such as cancer, heart and lung and dementia care could be improved. 

They will also be asked to share their ideas on how people can live healthier lives and 

what improvements they think could be made to help people access services quickly. 

The research is part of a national survey which is being collated by Healthwatch 

England. The survey is also available in British Sign Language and Easy Ready formats,

BHWT breaks ground on the UK’s 

first hen welfare & education centre 

The British Hen Welfare Trust, the country’s leading hen rehoming 

charity, is pleased to announce that work has now commenced on 

its first facility dedicated to the welfare of ex-battery hens. 

Affectionately named “Project Vicky” the 250 square metre 

contemporary building will offer a state-of-the-art rehoming centre as well as space for 

educational institutions, businesses, vets and other professionals to visit and learn more 

about how the charity revolutionises the lives of hens rescued from slaughter. 

Situated at the charity’s headquarters in Rose Ash, North Devon, the building has been 

designed and will be furnished purely with chickens in mind. It will boast a fully-equipped 

veterinary clinic and will have access to specialist veterinary surgeons to treat any 

chicken that requires extra care and attention. Most of the hens rehomed by the BHWT 

have lived in cages for 18 months, standing on nothing but wire and most have never 

had access to the outdoors. The centre will comprise two distinct parts allowing one end 

to be used for rehoming while the other will feature a central coop for hens with a 

walkway around the outside to allow for demonstrations. The walkway will include oneway 

glass so as not to overwhelm the hens when their visitors arrive. In addition to the 

downstairs elements of the building it will also feature a second floor with ample office 

space, future-proofing the charity’s expansion. 

Project Vicky will allow the charity to help hens not just in Devon, but also in a much 

broader sense via its educational work. The charity’s Education Team is putting together 

information and course material with a view to training veterinary students around the 

country both online and with instructional visits to the new facility. It is expected that 

Project Vicky will be welcoming its first batch of hens rescued from slaughter by the end 

of 2019. Project Vicky has been fully-funded by public donations. 

Jane Howorth MBE, Founder of the British Hen Welfare Trust and the driving force behind 

the new centre, said: “Project Vicky has been a long time coming and it’s thanks to every 

single person who has ever rehomed hens from us, fundraised for us or simply spread 

the word about our beloved hens to their friends and family. Vicky was among the first 

flock I rehomed in 1995 and the bond I formed with her led me to realise that chickens 

are far from being just farm animals. They are intelligent, full of character and 

individuality and make the most wonderful pets - in the same way as cats and dogs. Vicky 

would be so proud of what has been achieved in her name.” 

Local building firm, Woofenden Construction, is the main contractor on this innovative 

build. Neil Woofenden, Managing Director, said: “As a family-run business whose core

Lynton Police May 2019 Newsletter 

Police Surgeries Lynton Police hold surgeries so that residents 

and visitors can come along and chat with PCSO 30366 

Grace Cleverdon about anything that might be worrying them. 

Lynton Surgery is held on a Tuesday afternoon 3-4pm every week 

for 3 weeks out of 4. Challacombe Surgery is held at The Black 

Venus Inn once every 4 weeks from 2-2.30pm. Brendon is held once every 4 weeks in 

The Staghunters Inn 5.30-6pm. PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A NEW DAY & TIME we are trying out 

to see if it suits residents better. Come along and have a chat, sometime just talking helps.

Pavements are for people not cars Lynton Police recently received several complaints 

about vehicles parked on pavements in different locations in the area. Pavements are not 

designed to carry the weight of a vehicle and parking on them can cause damage and trip 

hazards for pedestrians as well as increase maintenance costs. To report a vehicle parked 

on the pavement complete an online form at www.devon.gov.uk or call 0845 155 1004. 

If pavement parking is causing a wilful obstruction or there is a danger, phone the police 

on 101. The police can issue tickets for obstruction and Civil enforcement officers can 

issue parking tickets for parking on double yellow lines. 

Summer Madness Motorcycle safety Devon & Cornwall Police are urging motorcyclists to 

stay safe on the region’s roads this summer. The Royal Society for the Prevention of 

Accidents (RoSPA) lists five main types of collision involving motorcycles and at number 

one is failure to negotiate bends on rural A roads. Here are Devon & Cornwall Police’s top 

tips for motorcycle safety: Always wear protective clothing : Always be visible : Take extra 

care when riding on unfamiliar roads : Be aware of other vehicles : Adhere to the Highway 

Code and ride to the level of your ability : Never stop learning – continually improve riding

Polite reminder to local businesses - Have you got a licence 

to put out tables and chairs on the pavement? 

As forecasters predict warmer weather Devon County Council is reminding cafés, 

restaurants and pub owners that a pavement licence is needed before they’re able to put 

out tables and chairs. It’s to avoid footpaths becoming blocked to wheelchair users, 

buggies or prams or causing difficulty for people with reduced mobility. 

Sometimes pavements are too narrow to have tables or chairs so the licence application 

considers the width of the footpath and the impact there would be on the public. The 

licence sets out how many tables and chairs can be put out and where they should be. 

Neighbouring businesses or residents are asked whether they would mind before an 

application is decided. And highways officers can ask business to move tables or chairs if 

a licence hasn’t been permitted or if they’re putting out furniture that isn’t as per their 

permission. And there could be a fine. 

A licence costs £85 a year to renew or £200 if it’s new. They are non-transferable so a 

new licence would be needed if there’s a change of business ownership. They are 

available from Devon County Council, except Exeter, Teignmouth, Newton Abbot and 

Totnes where local councils administrate them.

A treasure trove of nostalgic toys from the 1960’s to 1980’s waiting to be 

rediscovered. See games, toys, action figures and especially original Star Wars toys. 

This is a new venture for owners, Tony and Lorraine, who moved to Lynton from 

Bristol last July. Tony left a 30 year career in the aerospace industry to fulfil a 

dream to house his large toy collection. Lynton was the perfect choice as they had 

always wanted to live close to the sea. 

The museum and shop are now open and already generating interest amongst locals 

and visitors. Every visitor to the museum is heard to say “I had that!” There is an 

entrance fee to the museum, prices can be found on Facebook or their website. 

The shop also buys and sells retro toys. If you have anything you want to sell, why 

not pop in and see Tony. Why not visit and take a nostalgic visit back to your 

childhood?

The Vintage Mobile Cinema: Audrey – August Availability 

Over the last few years the Edinburgh Festival has 

been a key part of Audrey's schedule. 

It's been a massive endeavour and the financial 

benefits have been essential in helping raise the 

funds to cover her overall running costs. 

Very late in the day Edinburgh Council sadly decided to increase the rates for the 

George Street closure to such degree that Audrey cannot attend the Fringe this year. 

And things don't bode well for her returning in future years. 

This is very bad news and to happen at such late notice is unacceptable. 

To mitigate the situation a little we need to find as many events as we can to fill the 

August schedule. We've had a number of August enquiries in the past but been unable 

to accept these due to Edinburgh Festival.

Every so often Sam at the 'Ancient Mariner bar' 

decides to exercise her awesome powers of 

persuasion and galvanise people into action. On 

this occasion she decreed that there should be 

a jam session. Everyone who could more-or-less 

hold an instrument was told to report for duty. 

And didn't they just! A serried rank of eager (or 

were they just scared of Sam) guitaristas lined 

the wall, flanked by an accordianista and a 

Cajun drummer. There were actually TEN guitarists who just kind of clunked along, the 

accordionist squeezed and the drummer banged. Fortunately it wasn't the usual sort 

of jam session. Sam was in the middle of the melee and held the whole thing together 

and provided suitable songs for the clunkers, squeezers and bangers to play to. It 

always feels like a privilege to be around Sam when she is performing; her amazing 

voice blends perfectly with her beautifully crafted guitar accompaniment to leave the 

listener with the memory of a song that would cause the writer to exclaim ‘I hadn't 

realised how good that song was until I heard Sam play it.’ 

But despite her abilities Sam didn't 'hog it'. Every 

so often she would say 'Does anyone fancy doing 

a song? Come on! It's an open session, come and 

have a go!’ Several did and a wealth of talent 

slowly emerged from the ranks. However, things 

changed when it was decided that 'Old-Geezer-

'never' he happily grinned and dribbled his way 

through some old rock numbers. The rank of guitarists clunked along but Sam averted 

disaster by dropping exquisite harmonies into appropriate bits of the song. It was a 

great night, much enjoyed by a pub full of drinkers and players alike and there will now 

be a regular jam session on the second and fourth Sunday of each month. Come along 

with your favourite instrument, even if it is only your voice, and you will be sure of a 

great night of musical fun.

Project to rid National Park of non-native species 

A major scheme to clear Exmoor’s waterways of harmful invasive species has been 

launched following a grant of £185,000 through a Water Environment Grant (WEG), 

which is funded through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and 

Defra. 

The new Exmoor Non-Native Invasives Species (ENNIS) project - a partnership 

between Exmoor National Park Authority, Environment Agency, National Trust, Natural 

England and Nicky Green Associates - will allow work to control invasives in the 

National Park to be radically scaled up and extended to new species, through the 

procurement of a dedicated project officer for two years along with new equipment 

and volunteer training. 

Many of Exmoor’s streams and rivers are internationally important wildlife sites, home 

to otters, salmon, brown trout, dipper and kingfisher, as well as mayflies, dragonflies 

and damselflies that provide a vital link in the food chain. But non-native invasive 

species are a major threat to sensitive habitats throughout the UK, costing the British 

economy an estimated £1.7 billion a year according to the GB non-native species 

secretariat*. 

Exmoor National Park has been pioneering in its efforts to tackle the problem, leading 

a ten-year collaboration that has cleared an area the size of six Wembley football 

pitches of two of Britain’s most invasive weeds – Japanese and Himalayan Knotweed. 

But with the plant still present across Exmoor’s main river systems along with other 

invasives, like montbretia, Himalayan balsam, skunk cabbage and signal crayfish, a 

major effort is still needed to achieve sustained results. 

Project leader Ali Hawkins, Wildlife Conservation Officer at Exmoor National Park 

Authority, said: “All over the country our native species are in trouble. Urgent action to 

curb the spread of invasive species and restore protected habitats is vital to stop the 

problem escalating. This crucial project will allow us to ramp up our volunteer effort 

and appoint a dedicated project officer, as well as extending our ground-breaking 

trials using electrocution to destroy the root system of problem plants, and control the 

signal crayfish population by trapping and sterilising dominant males. We’d love more 

volunteers to help by signing up to one of our training days, or reporting sightings of 

invasive species online through our Wild Watch scheme.” 

As part of the Year of Green Action in 2019, people are being asked to pledge how

New Exmoor Activity Breaks on Offer 

Exmoor National Park has launched a new programme of 

activity breaks running from its Pinkery Centre for Outdoor 

Learning. For the first time in the centre’s 50 year history 

the public will be able to book a stay and participate in a 

range of guided outdoor activities led by professional 

Exmoor National Park staff and instructors. 

Each break has its own theme offering participants a wide range of activities. 

Family Discovery Breaks – 28 to 30 May and 2 to 4 August The perfect opportunity for families of 

all ages with a sense of adventure! Have fun as a family with outdoor activities such as 

orienteering, low ropes, archery, grass sledging, fire lighting and campfire. Prices from £120 pp 

(based on a fully occupied family room). 

Active Exmoor Weekend – 9 to 11 August The more adventurous can get moving with mountain 

biking, hiking, wild pond swimming and mountain boarding. Min age 12. Although activities are 

suitable for mixed abilities, all participants need to be confident in riding a bike. £199 pp for adults, 

£169 children (based on a minimum of 2 to a room - discounts for higher occupancy). 

Introduction to Moorland Heritage - 16 to 18 July Join professional National Park staff to explore 

and learn about moorland heritage with guided walks, talks and visits. £219 pp (based on 2

We're very excited to announce that Exmoor Adventures has purchased a fleet of E-Mountain 

Bikes (electric!). We now have 8 hardtail and full suspension E-bikes to add to our existing 

fleet of 35 mountain bikes. The motor 'assists' you as you pedal, so you still get to exercise, 

with a welcome boost up the hills, which is needed with the steep hills of Exmoor. 

We’ll be promoting an ‘e-bike route’ which will take participants from Porlock Weir, up onto 

Porlock Hill and across the moors where you can enjoy fantastic views across Exmoor and the 

coastline, before descending back down to sea level. 

We’ve had a lot of positive interest and will be teaming up with local accommodation 

providers and businesses to offer packages and unique experiences. We'll be hiring out the 

bikes from our base at Porlock Weir, as well as running guided E-rides and other courses & 

events. 

A big thank you to Exmoor National Park who have helped to fund this new project, and local 

company Tuned Cycles for helping us get them ready for the trails! These E-bikes are perfect 

for all ages (14+) and abilities - please get in touch to find out more, and keep an eye on our
