From The wife’s Perspective!
First let me introduce myself, my name is Jackie Pitts and I have been married to Peter Pitts for
42 years! He has always been interested in football along with his twin brother John and they are
now both Directors of Sittingbourne Football Club, all Directors are volunteers!
As you can imagine that is quite a big commitment every week! That doesn’t worry me…well
sometimes, as he seems to spend so much time in his office in front of the “magic machine” the
Computer, and I think to myself what
can he possibly be doing now! I call
out “what are you doing now?” the reply
comes back ““Putting the match
report on the web”, or “writing an article
for the Tunstall church magazine!!”,
or preparing the match day programme”,
it goes on and on. And then
there is the music he prepares to play
over the PA at home matches as Peter
is also the match day announcer. This
is all without the work that goes on at
the ground by a dedicated team of volunteers.
I have been to matches - both home
and away, and used to help out on
match days when Sittingbourne played
at Bourne Park when I was the hostess
for the mascot and their families. I
have to say that the atmosphere can
be exciting, more like one big happy
family, a place of belonging.
Although watching football is not my thing, I do enjoy the social functions that take place, especially
the annual league ball (which sometimes involves a few days at the seaside), and I mustn’t
forget to mention local band Marvellous Mo and the Back Line Ferrets whose lead singer Maurice
Dunk is the chairman of Sittingbourne FC and he and the band put on a number of shows at
Woodstock, in support of the club.
Thank goodness though I too have my hobby of horse riding. My passion for horses started as a
teenager and I have been lucky enough to have owned my own horse. I continue to ride locally at
Callum Park after losing my horse some 5 years ago to colic, he was a true gentleman and he
didn’t have a bad bone in his body and at least I had seven happy years with him.
Don’t get me wrong I don’t dislike football completely:- I used to love watching David Beckham
play! Back in the days when he played for Manchester Utd. But now I prefer the six nations Rugby
Union! I think that the top football players get paid far too much and I’m not keen on a lot of
their hair do’s! The rugby players are so big and burly and aren’t worried about their hair!!I don’t
really understand the rules of Rugby Union though but I find the game strangely exciting.
I suppose what I do like about Sittingbourne Football club is the fact that it caters for both sexes
and youngsters as well as the main team…and its all run by volunteers!
