From the Programme Editor
A warm welcome to our visitors Hastings and
also to the match officials.
Our Secretary John continues to sail the High
Seas so it is left to me once again to do the
welcomes and introductions.
We have lost our way a bit in the last few
games and Chris has explained it better than I
could in his article. Today will be an extremely
difficult game seeing as we were well beaten at
Hastings earlier in the season and Hastings
are very much in with a chance of reaching the
play offs.
Unless there is an avalanche of goals for
Greenwich Borough and against us in the last
three games and Greenwich win their two remaining
games we are now safe from relegation,
as we have a 16 goal difference advantage
on Greenwich and they can only equal
our current points tally. Its now between
Guernsey, Greenwich Borough and Faversham
Town to drop out. Both ourselves and Hastings
could have a say as Hastings finish the season
Home to Greenwich whilst we are Home to
Guernsey on the last day of the season. I
would think that Faversham Town will be safe.
We are of course now playing for pride as we
will want to finish above both Faversham Town
and Herne Bay, the team we play on Easter
Monday at Herne Bay.
This is the penultimate home game and its exciting
times for those clubs in the play off
chase. Cray Wanderers of course have
clinched the title and are now certain to be promoted,
but its not so cut and dry for the play off
winners. The Non league paper tomorrow will
tell you why, but I have done my own investigation
and so you can read in this programme
what a pigs ear promotion is for this season at
our step, step 4.
Also included in the programme is an article
that my wife wrote for the Tunstall Church
magazine. I have been writing a monthly article
for the church magazine for a couple of years
now but this month I handed that honour over
to the wife! She has, I believe, captured the
joys, woes and work in running a non league
club at this level. Alan Pinnegar, the vicar at
Tunsatll is a staunch Sittingbourne supporter!
The Bostik leagues charity for this season is
Save the Children and so they have asked all
member clubs over the Easter programme to
have a bucket collection for that charity, so
please give generously.
Don’t’ forget the music quiz at Woodstock on
the 26th April. Full details are in the ad in this
programme.
A very Happy Easter to you all and enjoy the
game today.
Peter

From the Manager
"Not Good Enough" - is the only message
which can be sent out after our fifth straight defeat.
There can be no excuses here, and nowhere to
hide. Simply put the lads know we have not
been good enough over the past few weeks.
When your low on confidence and the little bit
of luck we all get from time to time just isn't
happening, things can be extremely hard to
take some times. Especially when we are creating
chances at the other end, but for whatever
reason/s a large majority are either going just
wide or hitting the bar/post on a regular basis.
Yesterday, we decided to change things up a
little and start in a very attacking 1-3-5-2 formation
utilising our strengths going forwards. It
was a game I felt we could and should win,
sometimes the best form of Defence is Attack.
Unfortunately, after 15 minutes we had to
change it back to a more familiar 1-4-4-2 as we
were just getting carved open down the right
wing far too easily. Even so, I felt we still had
more than enough to compete and return with
all three points. However, this was just not
meant to be. We have a real issue at present,
this has been a consistent theme all season,
we are gifting goals away to teams through our
own mistakes. If you look at the stats 92% of all
goals conceded since January 2019 have come
from unforced errors. This is an area we have
to address going into next season, as no club
can survive with percentages like these.
Here are some more stats which show a telling
picture.
We have conceded 37 times from 42 games in
all competitions so far this season. We had
kept only five clean sheets in all competitions.
This is why we are in the position we are in.
None of us can hide from the facts. We concede
too many and do not score enough. I
wanted desperately for us to comfortably survive
on our own terms. However, today we
found ourselves awaiting the result of the Gurnsey
v Greenwich match to give us a clearer picture
of exactly what we now have to do to ensure
our league status. Thankfully the match
ended 1-1 which means Greenwich have to win
their two remaining fixtures and we have to lose
all three of ours as well as having to concede
more than 16 goals in the process. The percentages
are with us, the relegation battle now
looks to be between Greenwich/Guernsey &
Faversham.
As it stands this is still not an acceptable position
to be in, the strange thing here is though
that should we win our last three games technically
that puts us inside the top ten, results depending
elsewhere. Its a very strange situation.
So, now we have to focus upon the next three,
and this week we will set the lads their last remaining
challenges for this season.
1. Can we finish the season on a high.
2. Can we win all three games of football.
Right now some would say this is near on impossible,
given our recent run of form, but I say
this is where we will see the true character and
desire of the current group. Can we dig in and
make ourselves hard to beat, three more times,
can we give the fans, the town, the club a finish
worthy of their continued support?
These are the questions each player will be
asked this week.
My apologies to all the travelling fans yesterday,
for us not immediately, going over to you
as you are accustomed too at the final whistle. I
instructed all players to gather around at the
end of the match as I felt so disappointed, I
wanted to talk to all the players there and then
in order to put across my immediate feelings on
what I had just witnessed.
When all is said and done, its 11v11 and the 11
who want it most will succeed. Talk Is cheap,
actions will always speak louder than words.
To the fans, I simply say this:
The lads will you need your support more than
ever going into the three remaining fixtures,
and we know with you behind us, (the best set
of fans in the league by a long shot), that we
will fight for every ball.
Finally I wish you and your family a very Happy
Easter
Chris Lynch

Hastings United— A Brief History
The present Hastings United Football Club has
existed continuously since 1901 having undergone
three changes of name. One consequence
of those name changes has been that
the club’s history has become inclined to be interwoven
with that of other clubs with similar
names and only recently has its history been
disentangled which is why it may now read
somewhat differently to previous versions.
The origins of the club begin with the founding
of old town side Rock-A-Nore in 1894; however,
five years later they became defunct but in 1901
a new club started-up using the same name.
They won the East Sussex League Championship
in 1907/08 and were to be amongst the
foremost local sides regularly winning trophies
until World War One called a halt to proceedings.
The club has previously played under the banner
of Hastings & St.Leonards and, until the
2003/04 season, played under the name of
Hastings Town.
The club joined the Sussex County League in
1921 and in their first season finished runnersup
to Worthing.
The club joined the Sussex County League
again in1952 finishing second in Division Two in
the 1959/60 season.
After changing the name to Hastings Town, and
in the 1979/80 season, clinched the Division
Two Championship and won the divisional cup.
The following season, the club won the County
League Cup. The 1984/85 season was to be the
last as a member of the Sussex County League.
Following the decision of the then Hastings
United to cease trading, Town applied for membership
of the Southern League and were elected
to the Southern Division. At the same time,
the club negotiated a long term lease with Hastings
Borough Council for the Pilot Field Stadium.
The 1984/85 season had seen Hastings United
struggling against relegation from the Premier
Division and it was a combination of the last day
of the season results—United beating Welling
United 2-1 and Crawley Town doing the U's a
big favour by beating Witney Town - that saw
that Premier Division spot retained by the narrowest
margin. Having done the business on
the pitch, it was to be off-field matters that
caused the demise of Hastings United in June
1985, when financial problems became insurmountable
and the club ceased trading.
Following the demise of United, Town applied to
join the Southern League. Peter Sillett was to
return to The Pilot Field, where he had enjoyed
great success as manager.
Everything fell into place in the 1991/2 season
and they headed the Beazer Homes League
Southern Division table for virtually the whole
campaign, leaving Weymouth, Havant Town
and Sittingbourne to fight over the runners-up
spot.
Peter Sillett was dismissed in December 1991,
with the side at the wrong end of the table.
Dean White was appointed as manager and
successfully steered Town to safety.
Town were to play Premier Division football for
the next six years.
Lottery winner Mark Gardiner became involved
with the club at the start of the 1997/98 season,
but success on the pitch was frustratingly hard
to attain and managers came and went.
By the end of 1999, Town were in turmoil, having
resigned from the Southern League, with the
budget slashed, and players leaving, Town
were placed into administration and the Southern
League refused to accept an attempt to
withdraw the resignation. An appeal to retain
Town's Premier Division status was
unsuccessful but a final effort by a local consortium
was to be successful at the very last moment
and Hastings Town Football Club was
saved.
Hastings Utd — A Brief History Cont
Town kicked off the 1999/2000 season in the
Eastern Division.
George Wakeling was appointed as manager
early in the 2000/01 season, following Dean
White's move into the Nationwide League with
Brighton & Hove Albion. Promotion was gained
to the Dr Martens League Premier Division
football, and the club enjoyed a maiden trip to
the first round of the FA Cup, following a stunning
5-0 replay victory at Conference side Kettering
Town in the final qualifying round. A 1-0
defeat at Stevenage Borough, also from the
Conference, ended United's interest in the competition,
however the club was relegated to the
Eastern Division.
Chairman Mick Maplesden and George Wakeling
resigned at the end of the 2002/3 season
Steve Lovell taking over as manager, and relegation
was avoided.
The club switched to the Ryman League Division
One for the start of the 2004/05 campaign.
After a good start there was a dip in league
form followed leading to Steve Lovell leaving.
Neville Southall was appointed and the club finished
in eleventh place.
The 2005/06 saw Southall and the entire management
team leave. Player Nigel Kane taking
over after sharing the manager role.
The U's began the 2013/14 season as title favourites,
John Maggs was appointed manager
at the end of August 13 but Maggs was sacked
in January and Terry White took over for his
second spell as manager.
Two other managerial changes were made during
the season when results were disappointing
especially as many had tipped the club to be
challenging for a play-off place.
Towards the end of season 2014/15 the club
changes hands when a new board of directors
was appointed. Garry Wilson was appointed as
manager during the close season with Danny
Bloor joining as assistant manager.
Garry Wilson and Danny Bloor stepped down at
the end of the 2015/16 season to be replaced
by former United player Darren Hare who had
previously been with Gillingham FC undertaking
a number of rolls including caretaker manager.
Darren rebuilt the squad during the closeseason
with a number of new signings.
After an excellent season which ended with a
play-off semi-final defeat, on penalties, away to
Dorking Wanderers, Darren Hare resigned. His
replacement was Adam Hinshelwood who once
again had to rebuild the side as a number of
players moved on. Adam resigned during September
to take on the managers role at
Worthing FC and was replaced by his assistant
Chris Agutter.
In 2016/17 Hastings reached the paly offs but
were defeated 4-3 by Dorking Wanderers. Hastings
finished in 9th place last season.
Promotion From Step 4 This Season
There is a complication this season because there are 7 step 4 Divisions, (our non-league
step), but only 4 step 3 divisions. 3 clubs from each step 3 divisions will be relegated to step 4,
however only 5 out of the 7 play off winners will be promoted to step 3, (are you still with me!!)
This means that 2 play off winners from the step 4 leagues will lose out. Points per games of
the play off winners will be used to decide who the 5 lucky step 4 clubs will be. The table below
shows the current points per games of those clubs who are currently in the play-off positions or
near them. I have highlighted the Bostik South East Clubs.
From The wife’s Perspective!
First let me introduce myself, my name is Jackie Pitts and I have been married to Peter Pitts for
42 years! He has always been interested in football along with his twin brother John and they are
now both Directors of Sittingbourne Football Club, all Directors are volunteers!
As you can imagine that is quite a big commitment every week! That doesn’t worry me…well
sometimes, as he seems to spend so much time in his office in front of the “magic machine” the
Computer, and I think to myself what
can he possibly be doing now! I call
out “what are you doing now?” the reply
comes back ““Putting the match
report on the web”, or “writing an article
for the Tunstall church magazine!!”,
or preparing the match day programme”,
it goes on and on. And then
there is the music he prepares to play
over the PA at home matches as Peter
is also the match day announcer. This
is all without the work that goes on at
the ground by a dedicated team of volunteers.
I have been to matches - both home
and away, and used to help out on
match days when Sittingbourne played
at Bourne Park when I was the hostess
for the mascot and their families. I
have to say that the atmosphere can
be exciting, more like one big happy
family, a place of belonging.
Although watching football is not my thing, I do enjoy the social functions that take place, especially
the annual league ball (which sometimes involves a few days at the seaside), and I mustn’t
forget to mention local band Marvellous Mo and the Back Line Ferrets whose lead singer Maurice
Dunk is the chairman of Sittingbourne FC and he and the band put on a number of shows at
Woodstock, in support of the club.
Thank goodness though I too have my hobby of horse riding. My passion for horses started as a
teenager and I have been lucky enough to have owned my own horse. I continue to ride locally at
Callum Park after losing my horse some 5 years ago to colic, he was a true gentleman and he
didn’t have a bad bone in his body and at least I had seven happy years with him.
Don’t get me wrong I don’t dislike football completely:- I used to love watching David Beckham
play! Back in the days when he played for Manchester Utd. But now I prefer the six nations Rugby
Union! I think that the top football players get paid far too much and I’m not keen on a lot of
their hair do’s! The rugby players are so big and burly and aren’t worried about their hair!!I don’t
really understand the rules of Rugby Union though but I find the game strangely exciting.
I suppose what I do like about Sittingbourne Football club is the fact that it caters for both sexes
and youngsters as well as the main team…and its all run by volunteers!
I hope you have enjoyed reading this and I wish you all a Happy Easter.

Match Reports by Tony Rickson
Saturday 23 rd March 2019
Bostik South East
Sittingbourne 0 Hythe Town 0, Att 192
Hythe completed the double over Sittingbourne
and retain their interest in the play-offs.
Sittingbourne worked hard and created some
excellent goalscoring chances but at the other
end the defence was carved open just a little
too easily.
It was an even start between what looked twowell
matched teams.
On 26 minutes Roman Campbell’s superb run
was finished by keeper Coxall blocking his
shot. The loose ball ran for Timmie Babbington
and though he beat the fallen keeper his effort
was kicked off the line by covering defender
Dickenson.
Up the other end and Sittingbourne’s defence
was split between the centre-backs and leftback
for ex-Brickie Sal Kisitu to race into the
area at full speed. Out came Lee, down went
Kisitu, and the assistant referee immediately
flagged for a penalty. From where I was, it
looked a good shout but those closer to the action
were adamant it was never a foul. Top
scorer Ansah converted, though only off the
underside of the bar.
Six minutes later and the defence was split
again, this time through the inside-left channel,
and Tom Carlton, whose dad Paul used to play
for Sittingbourne, scored confidently inside the
far post.
Sittingbourne came roaring back and Billy Lewins
looked as though he’d scored but the ball
ran agonisingly the wrong side of the post, and
the keeper made a good save from Chris Barnard,
both chances coming from great play by
the excellent Campbell.
And the Brickies started the second half where
they’d left off with Izzy Adebayo shooting just
over and Barnard also going close, though
when Hythe did get forward Ansah’s shot rebounded
back out off the post. Hythe scored a
third, on the break.
Chances continued for Sittingbourne but nothing
to show for the effort.
Bostik South East
Greenwich Borough 2 Sittingbourne 1, Att
103
Lex Allan returned and played bravely and confidently
as if he’d never been away.
And that was that for the good news, though, to
be fair, Sittingbourne did get better as the
game went on.
Already without Tom Loynes, Tommy Fagg
and Josh Spencer, they were also missing
Kwasi Amoah and Jack Morrell, who has been
a key player in recent weeks.
Sittingbourne got off to a nightmare start with
Roman Campbell, Chris Barnard and Allan all
booked in the first 20 minutes – a couple of
them very harshly. In addition Lewis Chambers
played only two minutes before going off injured,
and to cap it all they also conceded a
poor opening goal.
Greenwich had made the more positive and
intensive start and got their reward when a free
-kick was played to Paul who headed in from a
narrow angle.
The home side continued to have the better of
the play but Sittingbourne gradually got a foothold
in the game forcing a succession of corners.
Sittingbourne were much more positive at winning
the ball back and controlling the game.
In the second half but they conceded a second
on the break when Harry Barkaway risked a
challenge near the edge of the penalty area
and the home player went down. Walter comfortably
converted the penalty for 2-0.
There was almost an immediate comeback
when Woods beat the keeper with a shot that
was going into the far corner only for a slight
deflection off a defender to send it up onto the
bar.
Sittingbourne halved the deficit when sub Izzy
Adebayo worked his way into space on the
right and pulled it back for another sub, Billy
Lewins, to finish with a neat first-time Effort.
Sittingbourne: Patrick Lee, Chris Webber,
Rob Lofting (Billy Lewins, 45 min), Lex Allan
(Johan Caney-Bryan, 4 min), Kane Phillip
Match Reports by Tony Rickson
Saturday 6th April 2019
Bostik South East
Sittingbourne 1 Horsham 6, Att 182
Sittingbourne were outplayed and outfought
and ended up on the end of a devastating defeat.
Sittingbourne got an early general warning
from the referee for some mistimed tackles –
which Horsham were very quick to loudly point
out – and Kwasi Amoah was booked after just
12 minutes for a foul.
Goalkeeper Patrick Lee made a fine tip-over
save to keep it goalless while at the other end
Lawrence had an opening after a good buildup
and pass by Henry Woods, but his left-foot
shot went wide of the far post.
Sittingbourne were playing well at the midway
stage of the first half but went backwards once
Horsham took a 31st minute lead when a freekick
beyond the far post was played back in
across goal and Smith volleyed in at the far
post.
What I thought was a terrible decision to penalise
Adebayo when he seemed to stretch his
leg out and win the ball led to Horsham’s second
goal just before half-time, commanding
captain Brivio powering his header in from the
free-kick despite Lee’s half-save.
Horsham got a third early in the second half
when Smith nicked the ball off two Sittingbourne
defenders and broke clear to
smash it past the advancing Lee.
In the last 10 minutes, Horsham went to town
and added three more goals as Sittingbourne
finally succumbed to demoralisation.
Smith got the ball in from a narrow then won a
penalty as Lee fouled him when he was left
clear. The final goal was another Brivio header
from a free-kick, meaning four of Horsham’s
six goals were scored from set pieces.
Somehow, Sittingbourne gathered themselves
together to force an injury time corner, and
when Henry Woods swung it into the near
post, the keeper spilled it with sub Billy Lewins
claiming the final touch as the ball trickled over
the line.
Sittingbourne: Patrick Lee (Yellow card),
Chris Webber, Jack Morrell, Lex Allan, Tommy
Fagg (Yellow card), Kwasi Amoah (Yellow
card) (Khalil McFarlane, 36 min, Yellow card),
Izzy Adebayo (Kane Phillip, 54 min), Tom Lawrence
(Billy Lewins, 59 min), Roman Campbell,
Henry Woods, Timmy Babbington. Subs not
used: Josh Spencer, Johan Caney-Bryan.
Saturday 13 th April 2019
Bostik South East
Whyteleafe 3 Sittingbourne 0, att 103
Sittingbourne were missing the influential Gillingham
loan pair Roman Campbell and Jack
Morrell. Joshua Spencer was fit to return after
six weeks out with a knee injury and he lined
up in an unfamiliar back three with skipper
Chris Webber moved from right-back to a defensive
role in central midfield.
Sittingbourne began well, spreading the ball
about and doing a lot of running and pressing
as Whyteleafe tried to play out from the back
all the time.
There was a little to choose between the sides.
Spencer in an unfamiliar left-back role tried to
play a back pass to keeper Patrick Lee but underhit
it and Hector nipped in to take the loose
ball and score an easy goal.
One became two just seven minutes later
when Whyteleafe cut out the Sittingbourne
back four with a simple one-two, Armstrong
running clear on a neat return pass to score
comfortably.
Sittingbourne manager Chris Lynch immediately
responded by substituting both his disappointed-looking
wide players with like-for-like
replacements.
One of them, Liam Middleton, straightaway
produced the moment of the match, brilliantly
dribbling past three defenders to set up Johan
Caney-Bryan for a chance from which he hit
the bar.
Sittingbourne pressed forward in the second
half and Caney-Bryan, Woods and Lex Allan
all had efforts, Whyteleafe though added a
third from the penalty spot when Spencer
fouled on the edge of the area.
Whyteleafe then had some good chances to
extend their lead.
Caney-Bryan was injured in a heavy tackle and
couldn’t continue and with all three substitutions
already made, Sittingbourne played the
last quarter-of-an-hour with just 10 men – their
fans kept singing, though, to provide the only
atmosphere in the ground.
Sittingbourne: Patrick Lee, Chris Webber,
Lex Allan, Tommy Fagg, Joshua Spencer
(Tom Lawrence, 63 min), Chris Barnard, Kane
Phillip (Abdel Ndew,44 min), Billy Lewins, Johan
Caney-Bryan, Henry Woods, Timmy Babbington
(Liam Middleton, 44 mins). Subs not
used: Khalil McFarlane, Kwasi Amoah.
