Mike Flint arrived in Bathurst a few years ago and immediately ingratiated himself into the community. His northern English accent was just one of the things people knew him for, and his often sarcastic manner meant either replying in kind or being cowed into submission. Needless to say, Bathurstians are seldom cowed by anyone so he got along with most people there. When he joined 43 Air School on contract to manage their Wright Place restaurant, he seemed to do a great job, popularising the establishment while opening it up to visitors and setting up a delicious menu that had locals from miles around looking forward to the Sunday lunch. He organised the Wright Place to be open in the evenings for open mic nights and shows and the restaurant really buzzed, especially at special occasions such as Christmas, Easter, “Christmas in July” and at other times. Yet all the time, Flint held onto a secret that, once revealed, came as a complete shock and caused a great deal of head-shaking among the residents who thought they knew him. Mike Flint was actually Gary Pyatt, a conman who had been on the Interpol list of wanted people for at least 10 years and who had for 22 years evaded capture by the British legal system that had sentenced him to six years imprisonment for fraud. While on a recent visit to Pretoria to obtain travel visas, Flint was identified as a felon who was on the Interpol watch list and arrested and taken to the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court. The residents of Bathurst were
Crime stats
show an
increase in
copper theft
NTOMBENTSHA MSUTU
Crime stats showed an increase
between February and March at the
Port Alfred Rapid Rural Response and
the Community Policing Forum (CPF)
meeting at the Port Alfred Police
station on Tuesday afternoon.
Although crime in general indicated
an increase, housebreaking showed a
decline over the last two months.
In the stats it was also shown that
Sector 3A (East Bank) has been the
busiest sector for the past month, and
that there had been an increase in
property crimes.
CPF chairman George Galbraith
expressed concern over the spike in
copper theft over the past couple of
months. Based on cases that were
reported, the theft of copper in the
areas has shown a drastic increase.
“There has been an increase in
copper theft, so much so that the
police have been put under pressure
by the community to stop the crime
by doing thorough investigations, but
we have a special action plan put into
place to stop this once and for all, we
also need to ask the community to be
our eyes and ears. Please report any
suspicious movements in the
communit y,” Galbraith said.
Head of detectives Lt Colonel Yogan
Reddy reported that there had been a
number of arrests made in the past
months and a murder case between a
girlfriend and boyfriend. The murder
accused was due to make a
statement at the station on Tuesday
af ternoon.
“In the arrests made there will be
court appearances soon. We are still
trying to make efforts to curb the
housebreaking cases as they have
also been our main priority as well in
all of the sectors,” Reddy said.
MultiSecurity reported a fairly busy
month with a number of reports and
arrests made. There were also quite a
number of phone-ins, of which some
were to report sightings of suspects.
They also reported that theft of
copper is an ongoing problem.
It was also discussed in the
meeting that the increase in certain
crimes was caused by political unrest
and protest actions were inflating
crime stats, particularly in cases of
malicious damage to property and
arson. It was also highlighted that
during load shedding hours criminals
take advantage and break into
properties. Neighbourhood watches
were applauded for doing a good job
in the communities, working closely
with the police.
During the Easter weekend the
town will be full of visitors, and
people are urged to be wary of their
surroundings. The next CPF meeting
will be held on May 21.

From dancing and
shooting to therapy
Occupational therapist serves elderly with love
BOB FORD
From representing
South Africa at
dancing and
bisley shooting as a
school girl to making
a huge difference to
the lives of the
elderly as an
o c c u p at i o n a l
t h e r a p i st .
This is the
r e wa r d i n g
achievement of a
young Port Alfred
farm girl and mother,
Mariska Vermeulen.
Born in Kempton
Park in Gauteng, she
also started her
schooling there.
It was during her
primary school years
that she became
interested in both tap
and modern dancing
and took this up “fo r
the fun of it”.
But this was taken
seriously by her
dancing school and
her team was entered
to dance in a national
competition at Sun
Cit y.
This proved highly
successful when they
won their age group
section and, as such,
qualified to represent
South Africa at the
world championships
in Germany in 2007.
Competition was
obviously tough and
they finished 18th in
what Vermeulen
called an “amazing
experience.”
She was also keen
on singing and sang
in the East Rand
Youth Choir for
several years.
The family moved
to the Port Alfred
area when her father,
well-known farmer
Frik van Rooyen,
bought a property
near Kleinemonde.
She completed her
schooling at PJ
Olivier High and it
was here that she
was successful in the
more robust sport of
h o c ke y.
She represented
the school for two
years, captaining the
team in 2010.
With her father
being a keen hunter,
it was not surprising
this young girl also
became interested in
the sport.
As the school
offered bisley
shooting as a sport,
she took this up and
soon excelled even
though it was
considered more
suitable for boys.
It came as no
surprise when she
was selected for the
Eastern Province
schools side to
compete in the South
African
championships in
Bloemfontein at the
end of 2008.
A modest
Vermeulen said she
managed to achieve
a lot of full houses
during this
competition. As a
result, she was
included in the South
African team that
competed in the
world championships
in the UK in 2009.
She explained that
they shot with .22
caliber rifles from
distances of 50, 80
and 100 meters. “The
competition lasted a
week and it was an
amazing experience,”
she said.
Once school was
over, Vermeulen
obviously had to
decide what she was
going to do with her
l i fe .
“This was not
difficult as I had a
passion for people
and a desire to serve
and help them. I
decided I wanted to
become a physio
t h e r a p i st , ” she said.
However, she was
BSc degree in 2014.
Still not qualified,
she did her
community service
for a year in
K i m b e r l e y.
It was here that she
met her future
husband and moved
to Hopetown in the
Northern Cape when
they married. She
This was not difficult as I had
a passion for people and a
desire to serve and help them
persuaded to do a
degree in
occupational therapy
and, after a strict
selection as only 40
students were
accepted, she started
her degree at the
University of the
Orange Free State at
the beginning of 2011.
A four-year course,
she completed her
opened her own
practice in the town
and ran this until the
couple moved to the
Eastern Cape at the
end of 2016.
Again she opened
her own practice, this
time in Makhanda,
where she also did
work at Kingswood,
Graeme and Victoria
Primary schools.
In September 2018,
Vermeulen took up
the position of
o c c u p at i o n a l
therapist at Settlers
Park, where it would
seem she has found
the true purpose of
her occupation.
“I love it here. It is
very rewarding to
serve the elderly, to
love them, and give
them the opportunity
to engage in
meaningful activities
and to give them a
purpose in life
instead of just sitting
in their rooms,” she
concluded.
By all accounts,
she has proved very
popular with all the
residents she works
with.
Rhodes celebrates
success of graduates
SID PENNEY
Of the 2,321 Rhodes
University students and
candidates who received
their degrees and diplomas at
the university’s six graduation
ceremonies over three days
last week, 61% were women
and 19% were international
st u d e n t s .
The graduation venue was
the edifice on Gunfire Hill, at
the 1820 Settlers National
Monument, and its Guy Butler
Theatre was packed at each of
the six ceremonies with
graduating students and their
parents and families.
On the vast stage of the
auditorium sat scores of
gown-clad academics, creating
a colourful backdrop to the
capping proceedings, and
thunderous applause and
cheering accompanied the
fo r m a l i t i e s .
Among those making their
way onto the stage were 89
PhD candidates, whose
number included a 77-year-old
botanist who received her PhD
in botany, Yvette van Wijk.
The university celebrated a
new record of 30 PhD degrees
for the Faculty of Humanities,
up from the previous record of
26 achieved in 2018.
TOP HONOURS: The ‘top brass’ of Rhodes University were
present when University of Cape Town academic
development director Professor Ian Scott, seated, signed
the honorary doctorate register at the first of six graduation
ceremonies at the 1820 Settlers National Monument last
week. Standing are, from left, Honourable Justice Lex Mpati
(chancellor), Dr Adele Moodly (registrar), Dr Sizwe Mabizela
(vice-chancellor) and Dr Peter Clayton (deputy
vice-chancellor)
Picture: SID PENNEY
The faculty of science
produced 38 PhD graduates,
the faculty of education 16, the
faculty of commerce three, and
the faculty of pharmacy two.
During 2019’s g r a d u at i o n
ceremonies, Rhodes also
conferred five honorary
doctorates upon Professor Ian
Scott, Professor Glenda Gray,
Professor Emeritus George
Ellis, Professor Pumla
EXPLAINING THE PLAN: DA shadow minister for energy, Kevin Mileham,
spoke of his party’s plans should they be voted into power in the May
elections. Mileham was speaking at the Royal Alfred Marina clubhouse
on Friday evening
Picture: ROB KNOWLES
Gobo-Madikizela and Chief
Oyenike Okundaye.
Rhodes vice-chancellor Dr
Sizwe Mabizela said during
proceedings that the
graduation ceremonies were
important highlights on the
university calendar, affording
it a special opportunity to
recognise, honour and
celebrate the academic
success and achievements of
CLOSE KNIT GROUP: Damant Lodge knitting ladies recently donated 10 of
their blankets to Sr Marietha Petzer, for use in the lodge’s frail care unit.
Mileham says DA has plans to fix SA’s woes
ROB KNOWLES
An enthusiastic crowd
of DA suppor ters
attended the election
campaign fundraiser
held at the Royal Alfred
Marina clubhouse last
Friday evening.
Mileham, the shadow
minister for energy, was
accompanied at the
election get-together by
his wife Natasha
the new graduates.
Mabizela said: “On behalf of
our chancellor, council and the
entire Rhodes University
community, I offer our
warmest congratulations to
each one of you – our
graduands – on your
wonderful achievements.”
In a bid to make education
accessible and inspire pupils,
Rhodes live-streamed the
graduation ceremonies to
Makhanda schools.
Aimed at grade 11 and 12
pupils, the initiative started in
2018.
“We are very excited about
pioneering this vital
educational initiative,” said
communications and
advancement director Luzuko
Jacobs.
Graduating students studied
for their degrees and diplomas
at the faculties of e d u c at i o n ,
humanities, pharmacy, l aw,
commerce, science and social
sciences.
Rhodes University is the
smallest university in SA and
enjoys the best undergraduate
pass and graduation rates of
any South African university,
also boasting the best
research outputs per
academic staff member in the
countr y.
Mazzone, who is the
DA’s shadow minister
for public enterprises.
The couple spoke
individually about their
par t y’s plans to rescue
SA from its predicament
regarding corruption,
wasted expenditure and
the apparent
non-accountability of
those responsible for
looting the state and
causing huge holes in
the fiscus.
Mileham said ANC
cadres had collapsed
many of the country’s
state-owned enterprises
and brought them to
n e a r - b a n k r u p t c y.
He also explained
how many failed
municipalities had been
combined with others
that were working well,
ending in the financial
mismanagement of
b ot h .
“You cannot take a
badly run municipality
and combine it with one
that works well and
expect good results,”
Mileham said.
“People say they
would like to give [State
President Cyril]
Ramaphosa a chance to
put things right by
voting for the ANC this
time around, but that is
incorrect.
“You do not vote for
Ramaphosa, you vote
for the party, and it’s
the party that decides
who will be the
president.
“Do you really think
that Ramaphosa would
still be the president if
the ANC factions that
support Zuma have
their way?
“And remember,
Ramaphosa was Zuma’s
deputy for 10 years. It’s
hard to imagine he
wa s n ’t aware of what
was going on.
“He was also the
minister in charge of
Eskom for five years but
was still ‘s h o c ke d ’ to
learn it was imposing
load-shedding on the
public,” he said.
Mileham went on to
describe those he
thought should not be
on the election roll for
the ANC including
Bathabile Dlamini for
her role in the Sassa
debacle, Faith
Muthambi for the
collapse of the SABC
and lying to the
parliamentary probe
into the corporation’s
finances, Nomvula
Mokonyane for
controversy during her
time at water and
sanitation as well as the
alleged R50k per month
she received from
Bosasa, Malusi Gigaba
for his time at Home
Affairs, Ace Magashule
for allegations against
him when he was Free
State premier.
He said the list
showed the ANC was
not taking state capture
s e r i o u s l y.
Besides decrying the
ruling party, Mileham
and Mazzone spent
more time explaining
how their party will fix
the problems that the
country finds itself in.
“When the DA finds
someone responsible
for corrupt practices we
suspend them
i m m e d i at e l y, ” said
Mileham, who was
referring to DA-run
Midvaal Municipality
corruption allegations
where several DA
councillors along with
directors and the
deputy municipal
manager were
suspended after
corruption allegations
were made against
them in a “j o b s - fo r -
pals” scandal.
“Where the DA is in
power unemployment is
far lower than the
national average. The
national average is 37%
unemployment but only
26% in the Western
Cape and just 12% in
M i d va a l , ” said Mileham.
“T h at ’s because we
build infrastructure and
encourage business.”
OPINION
We must
preser ve
memor y
Aweek ago, April 11, was the 74th
anniversary of the first Nazi
concentration camp to be liberated
by US armed forces during World War 2.
It was Buchenwald, and although
described as large by Captain Fred Keffer
of the US 9th Armored Infantry Division, it
was actually the smallest of the Nazi
concentration camps.
You can find Keffer’s full description
online, but he begins, “Above the
entrance was a German sign that read
‘you get what you deserve’. What we
found there scared us more than a hail of
machine gun bullets ... thousands of
human skeletons walking around ... we
had never seen such horror ... not even
the horror of war could surpass it.”
The Jewish prisoners, despite their
skeletal bodies, were so overwhelmed
with joy that they made frantic attempts
to lift their liberators into the air, shouting
with joy at their survival.
More than 50,000 did not survive; they
were used as human “lab rats” to test
typhus injections, enduring white
phosphorus poured over their bodies, then
timed to see how quickly they died. Some
of the dead were skinned to make
lampshades for the Nazi elite. More than
1,100 were shot in the back of the head,
1,000 Jewish women were sent to the
camp whorehouse.
The vast majority just died from
overwork in Nazi factories.
Even in a country beset by violent
criminal acts, we cannot imagine the
horror of World War 2, especially that
inflicted on civilian populations, being
bombed, fleeing from their homes, shot in
the street, and the millions rounded up
and condemned to more lingering deaths
by being enslaved, tortured and butchered
in the concentration camps.
We are so far removed by years from
that conflict now that there are very few
veterans left, or anyone, who lived
through World War 2. The stories and
memories we have are all second-hand.
But it is crucial we keep the memory
alive, informing ourselves through books
and the wealth of information available
online.
I grew up having a grandfather who
fought in World War 1, and I knew people
who fought in World War 2. The
generation after me does not even have
that connection. Now they know someone
who knew someone who fought in the
wa r.
Worse than that is coming across young
people absolutely ignorant about the war
and the Holocaust that went along with it.
We all need to be custodians of history,
passing on knowledge to the next
generation so that we all take up the
Holocaust memorial mantra, “Never
again”.
the benefit of ALL South Africans and not
The cross without
the resurrection
The death of some
outstanding leader is
commemorated in
various countries, but
none compares with
the commemoration of
the death of Jesus of
Nazareth – for on
Easter Friday hundreds
of millions worldwide
will be remembering
His death upon a cross
that took place almost
2,000 years ago.
He was crucified
between two criminals,
so what is all the fuss
about? He claimed to
be Christ, the Son of
the Living God, who
came from heaven to
give His life as a
ransom for many.
He said: “My
Fat h e r ’s will is that
everyone who looks to
the Son and believes
in him, shall have
eternal life, and I will
raise him up at the last
d ay ” (John 6:40).
Many mocked and
scoffed for He said
that He would save
others, but He could
not even save Himself!
What a meaningless
tragedy His death
would have been if it
had not been for the
resurrection.
His body was taken
down from the cross,
wrapped in linen
cloths, and laid in a
tomb, which was in
What would the
It would have meant
Easter at Serenity
For Christians, Easter
celebrates an
important moment in
Biblical history when
Jesus died on the
cross, absolving
humans of sin and
opening a new era in
the way in which
C h r i st i a n s
communicated with
God – through Jesus.
No matter what your
faith or personal
beliefs, we can all
appreciate the need for
a sense of letting go of
our past sins or
mistakes, and stepping
afresh into a new way
of living or being.
This month, in
acknowledgement of
the symbolism of
rebirth associated with
Easter, we launched
our Journey of
Rejuvenation, a
treatment involving
exfoliation and
of tired skin cells, and
stimulating the
Financial planning considerations
when investing offshore
The tax paid by the life company can
be less than an investor would pay in
their personal capacity
What is a home?
You have often heard
me say, “I love my
home.”
Naturally one would
think that I was talking
about the place where
I live and that I share
with special people.
And that is what I
was talking about.
Sanlam Cumulus Investments is a savings plan that has been
designed to give you the flexibility to choose how and where
you want to invest your money. Offering you the potential to
earn exceptional returns on your money with a range of investment
funds to choose from. Great estate planning benefits and
tax-efficient for individuals with high marginal tax rates.
It offers a cost structure that is amongst the lowest in its class,
making it extremely cost-effective.
Unique features of the monthly savings option:
Qualify for an additional allocation of up to 2%.
Earn loyalty bonuses.
No alternation charges will apply if you access your
funds after two years.
Investors wanting offshore
exposure have various routes
they can take, including
rand-denominated funds and
asset swap investments, but
if they decide to use
discretionary savings to
obtain direct foreign
exposure, there are a
number of considerations
from a financial planning
point of view that need to be
taken into account.
Sanlam adviser Sticks
Stiglingh says that Glacier
International offers an
offshore life wrapper – or
endowment structure – t h at
provides a number of
benefits, some of which are
discussed below.
Estate planning
a d va n t a g e s
According to Glacier
International, when investing
via an endowment issued by
a South African life
company, investors don’t
create an offshore estate,
which means they don’t
need an offshore will nor do
they need to appoint
international representatives
to help wind up their
offshore estate (which in
most instances is both costly
and time consuming).
The wrapper also ensures
an investor’s estate is not
subject to foreign
inheritance tax, which can be
higher than the client would
pay locally.
Investors in an
endowment policy
can simply
nominate a
beneficiary or
beneficiaries –
either for the plan to
continue being
invested in the beneficiary’s
name or for the investment
to be paid out, in which case
the proceeds will be paid
directly to the beneficiary
and not be dependent on the
estate being finalised.
The proceeds will also not
attract any executor’s fees.
In some instances, exchange
control approval may be
required to transfer the
investment to the nominee.
Tax efficiency and
simplicit y
Investing via a local
But I got to thinking,
what is a home? Is it a
building I own or
perhaps a building in
which I feel safe, for
example, a church, a
library or museum
perhaps?
Is it a group of
friends that meet
regularly that share
the same interests or
sense of humour?
Is it a sports club
where you compete
and then reminisce
about what worked
and what didn’t? It
might even be the
place we work.
I would imagine it
could be any one of
these or all of them.
MYHOME
... with Simon Oliver
Home is most
probably a feeling that
we carry with us
wherever we go.
It is not something
that dies when we
move but instead, we
take with us the best
of what we had and
start rebuilding.
I have often
wondered why we
always find a buyer for
a property even
though to many it has
no redeeming
wrapper means the South
African life company is
responsible for the
calculation, collection and
administration of any tax
due, and the investor
therefore has no personal tax
administration of which he
has to take care.
The tax paid by the life
company can be less than
an investor would pay in
their personal capacity,
depending on their personal
tax rate.
Tax liabilities are also
calculated in US dollars,
which means rand
depreciation is not taken
into account.
Protection from creditors
After a period of three
years from inception date,
the life wrapper will not form
part of an investor’s
insolvent estate and cannot
be attached by a creditor.
In the event of the death of
features. It may be
that each buyer comes
with his own
memories and ideas of
what a home should or
could be.
We each know how
we could change a
property into our
home. So it may be
that we never leave
our home, because we
always carry it with us.
We use what we have
learnt and cherish to
recreate that warm,
the investor, if survived by a
spouse, parent, child or
stepchild, the proceeds of
the life wrapper may not be
used to pay any of the
e st at e ’s debts.
This protection continues
for a period of five years
from the date on which the
benefits are provided.
Stiglingh
concludes that
using an offshore
life wrapper could
make estate
planning a lot
easier and save
beneficiaries time
and unnecessary costs.
announce that Pick n
the unwanted plastic in
their stores and
donating it to Port
Veronica Collins,
store manager of Pick n
to clean up the
environment of all
unwanted plastic so it
does not end up killing
marine life or polluting
our towns and killing
land animals.
Both managers are so
impressed with the eco
bricks that PAHS pupils
are making they have
made a special effort to
collect their single-use
plastic wrap and donate
it to the school.
Louca and her
would like to thank
their sponsors and
would also like to urge
the community to help,
by dropping all two litre
plastic bottles and
unwanted clean plastic
off at their school. The
eco bricks will be made
from them and put to
Nkwinti aims to uplift the local
community by bringing
much-needed revenue to the area
to help resolve its manifold issues.
But Nkwinti, who has a vast
experience in sport and recreation,
believes that sports development
begins with the children. Even
when working for the provincial
department of sport, recreation,
arts and culture he always
supported childhood development
and would like the RSAH Amanzi
Challenge to inspire youngsters to
become involved in the sports on
display, from surfing right through
to inflatable boat racing. We wish
Nkwinti and the entire team
behind the RSAH Amanzi
Challenge all the best as the event
kicks off with an 8km trail run at
the Royal Port Alfred Golf Club on
Friday morning.
AS for sport, don’t forget the
Pre-primary School (story in next
week’s edition). It was a really
pleasant time with all the
businesses that had contributed to
the work in terms of materials and
labour, and specifically Brian
Knight of CM Heunis who
coordinated the entire thing. It’s
really nice to know that, even in
these tough economic times,
people are willing to help out a
worthy cause.
Then, a little later that evening, the
DA held a fundraiser at the Royal
Alfred Marina clubhouse where
former Ndlambe councillor, Kevin
Mileham accompanied by his wife,
Natasha Mazzone, explained how
the DA was going to fix the
problems caused by the ANC. It
was good to see Mileham again
and one was reminded of when he
sat on council and gave the ANC
no quarter when he thought they
were doing things wrong. It seems
that, ever since Mileham resigned
to take a position at Buffalo City
Council, things are a lot calmer at
Ndlambe Council meetings, but
maybe the ruling party are allowed
to get away with too much?
ON Tuesday evening we were
again at the Royal Alfred Marina
Clubhouse, this time in celebration
of the Marina’s 30th birthday.
There is a lot of history regarding
the building of the Marina and the
only surviving developer, Pamcor’s
Justin de wet Steyn, gave a history
of the marina development from
the early ’80s until 1989 when the
marina was opened. Happy
birthday. TotT will be featuring 30
years of the Royal Alfred Marina in
next week’s edition. While it is no
secret that many still have
reservations regarding the marina
development, according to De wet
Steyn the amount of e.coli in the
lagoon it replaced was a risk to
health. He said an environmental
expert from Cape Town was
brought in and confirmed that the
marina development would benefit
the ecology of the area, not
destroy it. On this basis the
government of the day had no
option but approve its
const ruction.
CONGRATULATIONS and happy
birthday greetings to everyone
enjoying a special day in the week
ahead. Good wishes for the year
Fever-pitch excitement on Sunshine
Coast in Amanzi Challenge build-up
To all our residents and visitors, the Sunshine
Coasts biggest water-sport event, the Royal St
Andrews Hotel Amanzi Challenge is almost
here, and athletes from around the country and
overseas are ready to descend on Port Alfred to
participate for the R1m in prize money sponsored
by the Royal St Andrews Hotel (RSAH).
The town is expecting record crowds at this
year’s event as they support the local athletes
compete in this prestigious event. Previous years
have seen first-class surfing, bodyboarding and
inflatable boat (rubber duck) racing and this year
there will be the addition of beach handball.
The Royal St Andrews Hotel Amanzi Challenge
begins on Good Friday (April 19) and continues
through the following week culminating with a
closing ceremony on Sunday April 28 at the RSAH.
The event kicks off with an 8km trail run starting
at 7am at the Royal Port Alfred Golf Club, through
the indigenous bush and along the unspoilt
beaches which makes the run (or walk)
worthwhile just from a scenic perspective.
At the same time as Friday’sTrail Run
the SA Bodyboarding Championships will
take place at West Beach. There is also
lots of fun to be had for the children at
Kiddies Beach every day throughout the
entire challenge, including an Easter egg
hunt and many other exciting games for
the kids to enjoy.
The official opening ceremony will also
take place at the RSAH at 6pm.
Bodyboarding continues at West Beach
on Saturday April 20 and the SA Handball
Championships will begin at West Beach
from 7am. An “Anything that Floats” race
will begin at 9.30am at MyPond Hotel. At 12 noon
the Marina Mile Swim will take place at the
Halyards Hotel. This one-mile swim in the Marina
canals is well supported by the peole of the area.
On Sunday April 21 as the
bodyboarders are whittled down, the
excitement builds to see who will be
crowned this year’s champion. While
children enjoy the games at Kiddies
Beach the handball championships will
be played at East Beach, with the
prize-giving at 1pm. At 6pm the final
registration for the surfing competition
will be held at the Royal St Andrews
H ot e l .
The SA Bodyboarding Championships
continue at West Beach on Monday April
22 and the RSAH Port Alfred Classic
Surfing competition begins at East
Beach at 7.30am.
Surfing continues at East Beach on Tuesday
April 23 as does the SA Bodyboarding at West
Beach. The events will showcase some excellent
surfing and bodyboarding as SA finest take to the
Bringing comedy
and music in a
brand new show
My First One-Man Show, with Guests will see
local comedian Rob Knowles performing with
singer Kathleen MacDonald and muso Claude
Samuel at Harry B’s on April 27.
Samuel is a regular performer in gigs around
the area and will be accompanying Knowles
and MacDonald throughout the show.
MacDonald is an experienced singer who has
performed at many functions in and around the
area.
“My aim was to have no backing tracks
during this show, but I relented when I was
given the chords to the songs Kathleen wanted
to sing,” said Knowles.
“I only know three chords and, although
t h at ’s okay for most Status Quo songs, it’s not
much help in providing backing music.”
The evening at Harry B’s will include stories
from Knowles covering why the Sunshine Coast
is South Africa’s best-kept secret, the problem
with being a sex symbol and Millennials, along
with songs from the 1970s onward from
MacDonald and Samuel.
Knowles and Samuel will also be singing
some of their own compositions and all three
will collaborate on a final few numbers.
“I’m like a living segue between the good
st u f f, ” explained Knowles. “I’m there to give the
talent time to get ready, as well as providing an
opportunity for guests to get their drinks.”
Knowles said he was looking forward to the
show as an opportunity to get a few things off
his chest.
“It’s been a while since the last show and I’ve
been storing it all up. It’s bound to come out on
the stage on the 27th,” he said.
“I hadn’t realised how much effort it is to put
a show on. Flame always did that stuff. Still, as
I began to plan the show, I discovered just how
much talent there is in this area. This first show
only involves two of the many local artists who
I have spoken to but, if it’s a success, I will be
holding more shows with the same and
different artists in the future. We need more
entertainment in the area.”
Profits from the show will be donated to
Rotary to be used in their many social
upliftment projects.
Tickets at R150 include a choice of three
meals that you select from a menu at the door
before the show begins. Tickets can be
purchased at Harry B’s, as well at Laura-Kate’s
Gallery in Van der Riet Street or by contacting
Knowles on WhatsApp at 078-391-4701.
Board 4: Dealer W, both vulnerable
There is a downside to making overcalls in that although you are giving information
to partner, you are also helping your opponents to place cards, if
they win the auction. In the auction shown in the table, the overcall in clubs
helped declarer to make 12 tricks. South makes a perfectly normal lead of the club 3 and declarer
considers how to play the contract. South has not led the 4, 7 or 9, which would indicate a doubleton
and you can see the 2; so it is almost certainly a singleton. Therefore you win with the Ace, cash
the heart Ace and play the Jack, intending to run it if North shows out, or ducks. This neutralises
South because he/she will be unable to lead a club if he/she wins the second heart and cannot
reach the North hand before trumps are drawn. In this case the heart Queen falls, so you win with
the King, cash the heart 10, drawing the last trump; then play the spade Ace, followed by the Jack.
ÀÀ
two minor suit aces for a 12 trick haul. Some North’s may bid 2NT over the 1S opening showing
either 5:5, or 6:4 in the minors, but this will probably push E-W into game when N-S compete up to
4D. South duly leads the club 3 and declarer makes 12 tricks.
WELL DONE: An elated Rhodes University student receives his
SMILE PLEASE: Photographers – both amateur
and professional – were out in force during
the weekend. Here, an assistant holds up the
CRITICAL
The water position in Makhanda (Grahamstown) is no
longer at a serious stage, it is at a critical stage.
In fact, within the next fortnight or so it is likely that
the city’s main water supply dam, Settlers, will run dry
and the entire Makhanda will be reliant on the water
emanating from the Orange-Fish River scheme, via the
James Kleynhans waterworks.
It is common knowledge that this alternative supply
will not meet Makhanda’s daily needs, and water
rationing will need to be put in place. This means that
parts of the city will be without tap water for up to 12
hours at a time.
For many months, residents have been urged by the
municipality to use water sparingly, with harsh
restrictions in place. Yet, residents are quick to point out
that the municipality itself is wasting water in the form
of leaks that seemingly go unattended to for months on
end, despite being reported. The leaks are all over the
place – in streets, on sidewalks and on other municipal
proper t y.
The message to Makhandans is quite clear – use
water sparingly and brace yourselves for rationing.
Oh, incidentally, Settlers dam is down to a little more
than 7% of its capacity, and very soon it will no longer
be possible to extract water, what with all the mud and
silt at the bottom of the dam
THE OTHER SIDE OF GRAD
Once the more serious and formal side of bestowing
degrees, diplomas and doctorates upon students and
candidates was concluded at each of the six sessions of
Rhodes University’s 2019 graduation ceremonies at the
weekend, it was time for hugs, handshakes and
embraces.
Then there were a multitude of “smiley” p h ot o g r a p h s
taken by hand-held Canon, Nikon, Samsung Galaxy and
Huawei devices that were flashing all over the fountain
and foyer areas of the 1820 Settlers National Monument
on Gunfire Hill.
A total of 2,321 students received their degrees and
diplomas at the ceremonies, each of which was
conducted in an auditorium filled to capacity with
gowned academic staff, students, family members and
friends.
It was a very special occasion, and the intense
applause and cheering certainly showed it. Indeed, the
Monument was filled with some very proud moments
and stories of achievement.
Local photographic business FotoFirst was kept busy
throughout, with photographers clicking away on the
fringes of the stage, as well as at four temporary studios
set up adjacent to the fountain.
Once the six graduation ceremonies were done and
dusted at about noon on Saturday, it was time to think
about the traditional graduation garden party on the
copious lawns in front of the university’s main
administration building, with the sky-reaching clock
tower keeping a watchful eye on proceedings.
When party proceedings got under way at about the
3pm mark, there were some 300 to 400 guests seated
and standing under the trees. Within half-an-hour this
had grown to an estimated 3,000, and Rhodes catering
staff were still bringing in tray upon tray of savoury
snacks and sweet treats, like the ever-popular
ko e k s i st e r s .
It was a pretty hot afternoon and the juice gazebos
were also proving popular.
Just off the main walkway is a concrete performance
area, and it was here that the Graeme College steelband,
under the direction of music teacher Sylvester Appollis,
treated guests to some foot-tapping music.
The garden party guests included academics
(professors and lecturers), graduating students, family
members (in some cases extended family), friends and
dozens of smartly-attired children.
The food trays kept on coming, and paper plates were
being piled high. The steelband played on. Cameras
GARDEN PARTY SOUNDS: The Graeme College steelband provided
background music in its inimitable style for the estimated 3,000
people attending the traditional garden party at the conclusion of
Rhodes University’s formal graduation ceremonies at the weekend.
Those attending the garden party included academics, graduating
students, their families and friends
continued to click away. Proud parents were smiling
b r o a d l y.
That was graduation for another year, a most
successful and fulfilling event by all accounts.
TOURING THE PENINSULA ON FOOT
There were past occasions when upwards of 25 local
athletes would head for Cape Town at Easter time to take
part in the annual Two Oceans ultra-marathon and
half-marathon over 56km and 21km respectively. This
has dwindled to just nine Makhanda (Grahamstown)
entrants this year, six in the ultra-marathon and three in
the half-marathon.
Both races start at the corner of Main Road and Dean
Street in Newlands on Easter Saturday, the
half-marathon in stages from 5.50am and the
ultra-marathon at 6.40am.
Of the six Makhanda runners tackling the 50th Old
Mutual Two Oceans Ultra-Marathon, three have no less
than 53 Two Oceans ultra-marathon medals between
them.
Stephen Penney (Kowie Striders) has completed 26
consecutive ultras, having run his first while in matric at
Graeme College. Terri-Lynn Penney (Nedbank Athletics
Club) will be running her 15th this year, while veteran of
the road Richard Foss (Albany Saints & Sinners
Multi-Sport Club) has completed 13 and will be running
his 14th.
Also lining up for the scenic ultra will be Sally
Price-Smith (Albany) who has completed four Two
Oceans ultras, and first-timers Ryan Bruton (Albany) and
Nhlakanipho Mthembu (Rhodes University Athletics
Club).
Running the Two Oceans half-marathon will be Albany
members Colin Price-Smith (completed 13), Karen Meyer
(completed eight) and Colin Meyer (completed four).
AWAY WIN FOR GRAEME
In an inter-schools’ First XV rugby match played in East
London on Saturday, Graeme College defeated
Cambridge High School by 36 points to 19.
FILLING IN
Residents may have noticed workers out in the streets
repairing potholes in recent weeks and months. Chances
are pretty slim they are municipal crews. However, it’s
more likely to be workers engaged by Makana Revive to
improve the state of Makhanda’s streets. Makana Revive
is a trust that relies on donations from the public.
Late last week Makana Revive repaired some really
big potholes in Scott’s Avenue between New Street and
High Street.
Oh, and there have been those residents and business
people who are sick and tired of the state of Makhanda’s
streets, and who have taken it upon themselves to fill
potholes, whether with tar or concrete.
ZEBRA ON DONKIN
This is a request to the local traffic department to have a
look in its storeroom. Maybe, just maybe, they’ll find a 5l
tin of white paint to bring the pedestrian crossing
outside Carinus Art Centre in Donkin Street back to life.
In fact, the markings are almost totally faded, and that
crossing is used by school pupils every weekday during
term time.
MOTEL BUFFET
Back in the mid-1970s, according to the Grahamstown
Publicity Association’s “Coming Events” brochure of
September 1976, the Settlers Inn Motel below the 1820
Settlers National Monument offered Sunday buffet
RUBBING SHOULDERS: An estimated 3,000 people attended Saturday
after noon’s garden party at the conclusion of the formal Rhodes University
graduation proceedings. The garden party was held on the lawns between the
main administration building, above, and the Drostdy Arch
lunches at R2,95 per person.
Not only was The Mot (as it was affectionately known
back then) well known for its catering, but its pub held
keen fascination for regulars and visitors.
In the coffee-table book Grahamstown Reflected
published in 1995, author Emily O’Meara wrote: “Ye olde
English Flare Path Pub keeps the home fire burning in
winter and is filled with photographs assembled by
ex-Rhodian RAF pilot Bert Leach, who got the enterprise
(Settlers Inn Motel) off the ground in 1968.”
In a photograph appearing with the article, Tim Leach,
son of Bert, is seen admiring the framed photos.
The former motel is now Rhodes University’s Gavin
Relly Post-Grad Village, and Tim Leach has retired to the
Sunshine Coast.
EVERY UNIT VITAL
The SA National Blood Service (SANBS) visited
Makhanda (Grahamstown) last week when 67 units of
the life-saving fluid were collected. Although the figure
was not as large as in recent months in Makhanda, staff
members were grateful for every unit.
Their next visit to the Dutch Reformed Church hall in
Hill Street is from 12 noon to 6pm on Tuesday May 14,
and the SANBS is hopeful donors will turn out in force
on that day.
HONOURS AND COLOURS
Graeme College has conferred Honours awards upon
Josh Pamphilon (swimming) and Siphesihle
Madlongolwana (cricket), while Colours for cricket have
been awarded to Garwin Dampies, Riaan Labuschagne,
Aaron Richardson and Lakhanya Sam.
DRAGSTER IN THE SUBURBS
I found myself up there in the area just below Sugarloaf
Hill the other day, driving down Miles Street and into
Haider Street.
Looking at the house on the left-hand corner I
remembered, as I always do when I’m in that area, that
Victor Banks lived there in the early 1970s.
Now, why would I remember that?
Vic and I were members of the Grahamstown Car Club
back then, and we were the conveners of the Castrol
Quarter-mile Drag Races that took place between 1971
and 1973 from the aerodrome entrance to the military
base.
Who remembers those drag sprints?
Well, it was Vic Banks who, not too many years before
that, raced his Renault Gordini on the Killarney race
track outside Cape Town, and who managed to entice
three Johannesburg drag racers to come to
Grahamstown (now Makhanda) to compete. They were
Tony Berridge (V8 dragster), Tony Viana (Vauxhall Viva
V6) and the legendary Willie Hepburn (highly modified
Chev V8).
I remember very well that for three days Berridge’s
dragster was parked in Vic Banks’ garage on the
property on the corner of Haider and Miles. On the
Friday afternoon Berridge and his technician needed to
do some fine-tuning, and they drove that roaring
monster up and down Haider Street.
I was present and was expecting traffic cops to
appear at any moment, but fortunately they had better
things to do. But neighbours aplenty had gathered in the
st reet.
Vic and Margaret Banks also lived at 12 George Street
on the other side of town for a while, either before or
after Haider Street, and Tony Berridge parked his
ultra-long dragster there too. I would love to have seen
him doing trial runs up and down George Street that
year!
Oh, memories!
GRAEME IN GAUTENG
TAKE ONE FOR THE PAIN
Who remembers the days back in the 1970s when there
were no less than four pharmacies and chemists in the
then Grahamstown (now Makhanda) CBD?
RET Butler Chemist and LL Wallace & Co Chemist
were in Bathurst Street, Arthur Griffin Pharmacy was at
84 High Street, and Harrison’s Pharmacy was in the
Carlton Centre.
A few years earlier there was also Miller’s Chemist at
31 High Street, across the road from the Grand Hotel.
These days there’s Clicks Pharmacy on Church Square,
Grahamstown Pharmacy at 117 High Street, and
Port Alfred
Bowling Club
The Vernon Smith 101
Singles was completed
and won by Bill Wragg
with Julie Sliziuk coming
in as runner-up. Well done.
On Tuesday April 9 we
were happy to welcome
Mark Gibbs and Carl
Vermeulen from Personal
Trust when they joined us
for a game of bowls. The
winners of the sponsored
competition was Dallas
Cowie, Woza Williams and
Julie Sliziuk. Second place
went to Rod Wilson and
his team with John
Hodges and his team
coming third.
We said a sad farewell
to our retired greenkeeper
John Bennett at a
memorial service held at
the club on Friday April 12.
He will be missed by all
our members as he was
such a keen bowler. Our
thoughts and prayers are
with his wife Carolynn.
The PA Settlers Plate
GBS was played on
Sunday and we
congratulate the winners
Rodney Austen, Dave
West, Stuart Clarkson and
Pippa Swift. Second place
went to Rod Wilson and
his team with third place
going to Trevor Frost and
his team. Thanks to GBS
for their continued support
as well as a big thanks to
all the participating teams
as without them we could
not hold a tournament. A
big thanks to John Hodges
for his organisation and
doing the scoring as well
as to all members who
worked on catering and
manning the bar.
We welcome Build-it as
our new sponsor. Their
sponsored competition
played on April 13 was
won by Trevor Frost and
Julie Sliziuk, with
runners-up being Elzabe
Rodrigues and her team.
Well played.
Welcome back to Jane
Armitage and her team of
Wendy, Noelene and Sue
who participated in the
Ladies’ All Cape held in
Port Elizabeth.
Please support our
Spud Evening which will
be held after bowls on
Saturday April 20.
Kowie Bowling
Club
Watching bowls from my
various vantage points on
our greens I have been
struck by how many
bowlers play their first
bowl narrow and then
have to adjust their grass
with the second bowl.
It is almost as if they
have a fixation about the
green having a narrow
draw. Most of the better
players have the ability to
estimate the speed of the
green from the “message”
they receive through their
feet. The texture and
hardness of the surface
will give them an idea of
the speed, and therefore
the amount of grass to
take even before they have
played their first shot.
The amount of grass
one has to take depends
on (a) the speed of the
green and (b) the amount
of bias the manufacturer
has built into the bowl.
On a fast green the
bowl will take longer to
come to rest with the
result that the initial
direction of delivery must
be wider than would be
the case on a slower green
where the bowl does not
BOWLSBANTER
... what’s happening
have much time to turn
before it comes to rest.
The manufacturer’s
input: Before 1968 a bowl
started off as perfect
sphere. A portion was
lopped off from one side
making the bowl rather
lop-sided with a centre of
gravity slightly off-centre.
At that time the Hensellite
Heavyweight De-Luxe had
the widest draw where the
centre of gravity was 6mm
off centre. Today the
manufacturer is granted
much more liberty in
shaping the bowl to
perform differently.
In 1968 the bowling
greens in Australia were
so fast that for anyone
playing with a standard
Hensellite the ordinary
full-length draw would
have to travel over the
adjacent rink to come
back to the centre of the
green. Play was often
delayed while players on
adjacent rinks had to wait
their turn to play their
s h ot s .
The authorities were
given the choice – either
you make the rinks bigger
or you alter the bowl so
that the draw will be
contained inside your own
rink – that was the birth of
the narrow bias bowl.
Originally the narrow
bias bowl was only meant
for those countries where
the bowl encroached on
the next rink. It was never
meant for South African
play but once the
manufacturers got the bit
between their teeth they
sold the new bowls
anywhere
Last Tuesday we had a
good turn out and some
close games. One team
must have thought that
the game stopped at 11
ends because they never
scored again. Jonty
Alexander, Lawrie May,
Rob Walker, and Gavin
Muir had the big win for
the day.
Thursday brought
another good turn-out and
some good bowls. Rob
Owsley, Pee-wee
Tomlinson, Martin
Slatterley, and Andy Stuart
brought in the best card.
Playing for SPAR
Vouchers on Saturday we
had some close games
until Steve Minnaar, Bugs
Wilmot, and Gill Turner
completely upset the
apple cart with a massive
35-5 win. The hapless
losers are still wondering
how they scored 5.
AN AWAY WIN: The Kenton team that won the Port Alfred GBS
competition on Sunday, from left, Dave West, Pippa Swift, Stuart
Clarkson and Rodney Austin with Bessie Mears from sponsor GBS
Congrats to Jackie Kriel
and her All Cape team on
qualifying for the bowl
event. Unfortunately they
were knocked out in the
next round.
It was gratifying to see
Kowie provide 5 teams for
our neighbour’s GBS
Tournament. Unfortunately
their achievements did not
match their eagerness to
at tend.
Kenton Bowling
Club
A great fun filled week at
the club with some special
social occasions, lots of
great bowling in our club
competitions and a win for
Kenton at the Port Alfred
GBS competition.
Ted Birch celebrated his
90th birthday after bowls
last Wednesday evening
and provided a fantastic
seafood feast for all
present. Ted, we wish you
a hearty and healthy 91st
year and thank you for a
great evening, you
certainly have set the bar
high for our budding
nonagenarians!
Last Thursday we were
pleased to celebrate
Desiree Green’s 60th
birthday together with her
friends from our
neighbouring tennis club
when they popped into the
club for a “cleansing ale”
after her birthday lunch.
Rob Wallace treated
club members to a
delicious Indonesian
dinner on Friday evening,
turning our normally great
Friday get together into a
fantastic evening. Thank
you Rob for a meal with a
d i f fe r e n c e .
It was wonderful to see
Ollie Davis back at the
club last week and we
look forward to seeing him
more often, unfortunately
he wasn’t around on Friday
evening for the attendance
draw and missed out on
the R500 jackpot.
The van der Merwe
family had a second
opportunity to hunt the
Joker down, Glen this time
getting it wrong and
thereby ensuring another
bumper turnout next
Friday. Marianne and
Gerald Brown deserve a
special vote of thanks for
their fine bar service
during a very busy week.
We d n e s d ay ’s Dias
Jackpot was once again
very well attended and
keenly contested with Ruth
Low, Lee Slater, Pippa
Swift and JP du Toit
pipping Dave West, Rob
Bowker, Stuart Clarkson
and Gert Immelman to
take first prize on the day.
This result is sure to
tighten up the standings at
the top of the Dias
leaderboard which will be
available at the club and
on our website.
We had five mixed
teams participating in the
Port Alfred GBS
competition on Sunday
where some heavy
downpours in the
afternoon sent bowlers
scuttling for cover on a
number of occasions.
New skip Rodney Austin
and his team of Dave
West, Stuart Clarkson and
Pippa Swift managed to
trump both the conditions
and the competition,
winning the tournament
and wrapping up a great
Kenton bowling week.
Unfortunately we didn’t
have any rain in Kenton on
Sunday but all of our
bowlers were more than
happy to wring out their
sopping wet clothes in
their gardens when they
returned home.
Thank you to all who have contributed to the
May 4.
Preparations are ongoing for the Allan
Wilson Classic. We have 47 players coming
from around South Africa. Reminder to our
social players that the greens will be closed
from Wednesday April 24 until the close of the
competition on May 4.
GREAT GALA RESULTS: Four Port Alfred High School swimmers were
invited to attend the Level 3 National Championships gala during the
holidays. They were Kate Tinley, pictured, Emily Beatt, Scarlett
Tweedie and Will Beatt. Will however opted to go the Level 2 National
Gala instead. This was on the advice of his coaches and parents. Kate
achieved 10 top 10 places, including six places in the top three. They
were for the 200m backstroke, 50m backstroke, 100m butterfly, 100m
butterfly, 100m breaststroke and a third place as part of a medley
relay team

L ADIES’ R E S U LTS
April 9: Great weather for a
change for the ladies
competition which was an
individual Stableford for the
second round of the Easter
Shield sponsored by Viv
Jordan. The competition is
... the results
played as an eclectic over
two rounds off 75% of one’s
handicap. Twenty-eight
players participated in the
second round.
The winner with 38 points
after shooting a great nett 69
in the second round (and
nett 66 overall) was Shirley
Heny. Maureen McGarvie
came home second with 37
points and Ingrid Griffiths
third with 36 points.
Two-clubs were sunk by both
Linda Dobson and Yvonne
Hill on the eighth. Linda
Dobson’s drive was closest
to the pin on this hole
sponsored by Colin Mavuso’s
Rosehill Driving Range. Lady
Captain Pogs Smith’s was
nearest on Top Carpets’ 6th
as was Lynn West’s on
Wimpy’s 11th. Sandy Fryer
was “closest-for-t wo” on
River Spa’s 13th.
The longest drive
competitions were held on
the 17th and struck by Shirley
Heny and Sue Roll in the
lower and higher handicap
sections respectively.
Another notable individual
round other than Shirley’s
was the nett 69 shot by
Maureen McGarvie.
There were also six players
taking part in a “bunnies” or
beginner’s competition for
the first time with Verene
Burger winning this event.
The Eastern Province Medal
championship is held
annually measured as a
mean of the four best medal
scores recorded by all
players in the seven clubs
that make up the province.
Kim Gardner came third in
the Silver Division and Sonia
Reynolds 1st in the Bronze
Division. Well done to these
local players.
PORT ALFRED MIXED
April 13: Saturday dawned
perfect for golf, overcast and
cool and 19 players turned
out for the early morning
draw in the weekly 2-to
count mixed Stableford
alliance competition. The
field was drawn into four
four-balls and one three-ball.
Margie Reid, Adrian Reed,
Kevin Maree and Philip van
der Byl’s 87 points pipped
the 85 carded by runners-up
Yvonne and Rick Hill, Carol
Lee and Terry Harris to win
the morning’s competition.
The longest walk was made
by Danny and Gaby Tarpani
playing alongside Sue and
Steve Kennedy who between
them could only muster a
lowly 77 points.
Nevertheless, Steve Kennedy
did birdie the par three 11th
as did Tim Shanks the 13th.
Carol Lee enjoyed her
morning by both shooting
the lowest nett score (70)
and hitting her ball
closest-to-the-pin on the
eighth to win the bottle of
wine on offer courtesy of the
R PA G C .
KGB RESULTS
Tuesday April 9: P l ay e r s
were literally hitting the ball
out of sight as the 38
participants teed off on
Tuesday morning, such was
the thickness of the mist that
pervaded the course and
only lifted very slowly.
The early morning chill
turned into warmth and only
gentle westerly breezes
interfered with play for the
two three-balls and eight
four-balls drawn to play in
the usual two-to-count
Stableford alliance.
Len Bohnen netted a superb
65 to lead his covey of Don
Thomson, David Groenewald
and Heinz Czepluch to
victory with 87 points.
They were 2 points to the
fore of the 85 carded by
runners-up Jimmy van
Rensburg, Matt Chadwick,
Dale Wisener and Ian
G at e n by.
At the other end of the points
list were Dave Curran, Dave
Rose, Eric Segers and James
Weisters who’s tally of just
75 points were insufficient to
avoid the custody of the
much to be avoided Hamer
en Sukkel trophy.
Two clubs were sunk by Cecil
Grobler (sixth), Steve
Kennedy and Heinz Czepluch
(11th). Apart from Len
Bohnen’s exceptional, round,
Paul Fryer and Brian
Hayward would both have
gone home happy after
netting 70.
Friday April 12:Hot weather
returned on Friday morning
to the point where it could be
described as uncomfortable.
Nevertheless, 41 players
turned out to be drawn into
10 four-balls and one
three-ball to play a
two-to-count Stableford
alliance.
Bob Shaw, Russell Warren,
Andy Barnes and Don
Thomson carded a superb 93
points to win the morning’s
proceedings.
They were closely shadowed
by both (1) Don and Maureen
McGarvie, Nick Oosthuizen
and Arnie Schultz and (2)
John Crandon, Gerald
Churchley, Eugene Erasmus
and Mike McNamara who
tied in the runners-up slot
with 90 points apiece.
There were a number of good
individual nett scores, the
best being Bob Shaw’s 64
after grossing 79, John Dell
68, Arnie Schultz (69), Andy
Barnes, Donald McGarvie,
Gerald Churchley, Eugene
Erasmus and John
Muggeridge (70).
Eugene Erasmus had a good
day on the par threes by
birdying the sixth and the
11th while Andy Stembridge,
John Dell and Chris
Niebieszczanski all had
two-clubs on the eighth.
KOWIE
STRIDERS
... runners with pride
Please do not forget
tomorrow (Friday) is the
Amanzi 8km trail run. Let’s
all go out there and make
it a well-organised race
and fun morning.
Last week we had Lulu
Mceka running the
Mercedes-Benz 15km race
minutes while Marietjie
Robb was up in
Johannesburg running the
Germiston Callies 15km.
Jean and Carol Nepgen
walked a 10km race at
Pildich Stadium in Pretoria
in 1:30 and 1:28
respectively, and then did
the Birchwoods 21km in
Boksburg the following
day. Carol completed it in
3:04 and Jean in 3:16.
This Saturday is the 50th
Young archers take a
bow at country club
READY, AIM, FIRE: Pupils hoping to gain selection to the Eastern Cape provincial archery team competed in their monthly competition at the Port Alfred Country Club last Saturday Picture: ROB KNOWLES
Pupils from local schools show off competitive skills
ROB KNOWLES
From the enthusiasm shown by
the participants in last
S at u r d ay ’s schools archery
competition, held at the Port
Alfred Country Club, it seems that
archery is gaining popularity among
schools in the Eastern Cape.
NASP (National Archery in the
Schools Programme) is an
international programme to advance
the sport of archery and encourage
pupils to participate in the sport.
Many schools in SA are already part
of the programme and Eastern Cape
schools are currently preparing for
the national championships that will
take place in November this year
where pupils will be vying for
selection to the Eastern Cape
provincial team.
On Saturday the Buffalo Archery
Club from East London, which
includes schools such as Hudson
Park, Clarendon Girls High School,
Selborne College and Beaconhurst
High competed against local
schools El Shaddai Christian
Academy and Port Alfred High
School in the monthly competition.
Parents of children participating
at the sports club on Saturday,
sisters Bev Kent-Brown and Tracy
Pook, spoke about the competition.
“It’s gaining in popularity,”
explained Pook.
“The fact is that archery doesn’t
depend on athletic ability, strength,
size or gender so everyone can
participate. All the NASP bows are
the same, just the tension is varied
depending on the strength of the
a r c h e r. ” The bows themselves are
potentially lethal weapons so safety
is one of the overriding
considerations during the
competition and non-competitors
are kept well away and behind the
archers at all times.
Archers fire at either standard
bullseye targets or at models of
animals (called 3D archery) and
scores out of a possible 300 points
are awarded for accuracy and “kill
s h ot s ” on the 3D models.
The top primary girl in the 3D
section on Saturday was Hannah
Ford with a score of 238. Top
primary boy was Casper Bekker. In
the bullseye competition, the top
primary girl was also Hannah Ford
with a score of 264 and the top boy
was Hein-Carlo Smith with a score
of 271. Top junior high scores for 3D
were, for the girls Celeste Crouse
(287) and for the boys Jason Botha
(282). As for the junior high
Bullseye competition, Janeke
Grossman won the girls competition
with a score of 279 and Jason
Botha scored highest for the boys
with a score of 290.
On the day, the top girl archer
was Celeste Crouse with a
combined score of 563 (out of 600)
and the top boy archer was Jason
Botha with a combined score of 572.
MEDAL WINNERS: Port Alfred High pupils participated in Interschool’s Archery
Saffron Tweedie won a silver medal for Primary Girls Bulls Eye and a bronze for Primary
PAHS hockey girls beat PJ Olivier
The Port Alfred High School first
long-time rivals, Hoërskool PJ
In other rugby fixtures played
earlier in the week, the PAHS
U13B and the U13A teams won
their matches against Port Alfred
Primêre while the U9 team lost
5-10.
On the netball courts PAHS
afternoon of netball against Port
Alfred Primêre midweek with the
U9s winning 2-0, U10s winning
3-2, the U11s winning 9-2, the
U12s winning 7-3 and the U13
been selected to represent EP
Netball and to Tasmyn Cannon
who came first in the Kata and
second in the Kumite during the
EP Karate trials.
Grade 9 pupil Kate Tinley
participated in the Jendamark
toughest 5km Indian Ocean
commended on her results. Kate
swimmers, 10th woman overall,
third in the 0-18 year section and
was the only U14 to take part in
the event.
