WELCOME Wilnecote Warbler April 2019 HEADTEACHERS WELCOME The Wilnecote School was recently selected by the Department of Education to be a host school for the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS.) This is a survey of the educational achievement of pupils in years 5 and 9 organised by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA).The resulting report provides analysis of the TIMSS findings for England and compares England’s performance to the other 56 participating countries. The Year 9 students, selected at random by the IEA, spent a whole morning being tested on mathematical and scientific concepts and having their attitudes to learning in these subjects assessed. We are very proud of their effort and commitment, particularly so given that they will not receive individual feedback and nor will the school. Instead they have given value to a wider educational research tool. The challenging tests and their remit made me reflect on the testing culture so prevalent in our education system. We know and understand why certain subjects and their rigorous testing to an international level are important but at The Wilnecote School we also know how important other things which shouldn’t be tested are; developing a love for the arts, a capacity to enjoy making music, maintaining healthy and fit bodies, experiencing things beyond the curriculum. As I welcome you to this half term’s Wilnecote Warbler it is wonderful to see so many of these important areas of the curriculum and activities beyond it being showcased in such abundance. I urge all our students to grasp the opportunities to go above and beyond here at Wilnecote. Mrs Hartle MA(Oxon) PASTORAL WECOME We can’t believe that it is already the end of Spring Term and it’s time for a welldeserved Easter break. At the beginning of term, The Pastoral Team welcomed Mrs Ager as the new Head of Grazier and Mrs Hill as Director of Student Standards, both have brought valuable experience and knowledge to the team. Well done to each and every one of you who was invited to the Celebration Cinema Club to celebrate outstanding behaviour during the Spring Term. You all should be very proud of the positive approach you demonstrated to your studies, lessons and the school community. We really enjoyed celebrating this success with you all. If you didn’t receive an invitation this time, then you need to make sure that you focus and apply yourself next term so we can celebrate with even more students. After our Easter holiday we will only have 15 school weeks left, our Year 11s will be starting their final GCSE exams, Years 9 & 10 will be continuing their studies for their GCSE subjects and mock exams. Year 8s will be finishing KS3 and will start looking forward to starting their GCSEs in September and Year 7s will be finishing their first year at The Wilnecote School. Finally, we will all be welcoming our new Year 7s during transition. 2 We hope you all have a fantastic Easter break, relax and enjoy spending time with your friends and family. See you in a few weeks!
