It’s ‘safe to drink’
JON HOUZET
Ndlambe Municipality has assured
Port Alfred residents that the
tapwater is safe to drink. This
affirmation was stated with
confidence by infrastructural
development director Noluthando
Vithi-Masiza and repeated by manager of
water Enoch Jobela at a media briefing
last Thursday on the state of water in Port
Alfred.
This follows numerous complaints from
residents about the dirty water coming
out of their taps and an accompanying
chemical and vegetable odour which
some people said made them nauseous.
In recent weeks, residents have posted
photos of the brown and yellow water
coming out of the taps on Talk of the
To w n ’s Facebook group. Many said they
had suffered skin irritations from bathing
or showering in the water.
Present at the briefing with
Vithi-Masiza and Jobela, were
infrastructure deputy directors Thulani
Maluleka and Sipho Babama, community
protection services director Nombulelo
Booysen-Willy and communications
officer Cecil Mbolekwa.
Vithi-Masiza said there were water
shortages as a result of drought and they
could even be attributed to the water
table dropping due to borehole drilling in
the Makana area.
She said Kowie River levels were so low
at the Waters Meeting weir that the
Ndlambe Municipality assures Port Alfred residents on water quality
municipality was pumping water directly
from the Sarel Hayward Dam, which is a
storage dam and not on the river.
She said as of April 4, the dam level
was at 40%, having dropped a staggering
20% in just three days from the 60%
measured on April 1.
She attributed this in part to schools
reopening and using water.
“We ’re sucking up everything that’s
settled in the dam, including the algae,”
Vithi-Masiza said.
She also said the municipality was
bypassing the balancing dam just outside
Port Alfred, something already
established by Talk of the Town when we
visited the balancing dam a few weeks
ago, as the pump and sluice is inactive
and the water level there is so low even
the bases of the measuring pillars are
exposed.
“We ’re pumping directly to the water
treatment works,” Vithi-Masiza said,
explaining that the downside of
bypassing the balancing dam was that
the water was not getting aeration.
Rather, water had to be aerated at the
water treatment works.
Jobela explained the process, saying in
pre-chlorination HTH chips were added to
the water and then flocculent, called
Polly, which addressed the turbidity of the
water, drawing together the impurities
which sink to the bottom while the water
is in holding tanks. After that, the water
goes through a sand filter and granular
chlorine is added before the final stage of
gas chlorine and from there to the
reser voirs.
Booysen-Willy said water from the
water treatment works tested a zero
count for E.coli and faecal coliforms when
samples were taken on April 1, providing
a copy of the results to Talk of the Town.
While admitting that the colour of the
water was “still a challenge”, Vithi-Masiza
did not address the smell of the water.
She did however say: “The results told
the water is fit for human consumption.”
She was echoed by Jobela who said:
“Our water is consumable, as the director
said.”
The municipality had no chemical
analysis results of the tapwater, but
Booysen-Willy said these tests were being
done and the results would be available
soon.
Vithi-Masiza said the central boreholes
would supply an additional 0.8ML a day
and the municipality was also upgrading
the dune wells on the East Bank which
would provide 0.4ML.
She said Amatola Water’s bulk water
scheme, including the “quick wins”,
remained incomplete, and funding was a
problem.
“We are praying for rain – without rain
we’re in trouble,” she said.
Local scrap dealer speaks out
in wake of ongoing pipe thefts
ROB KNOWLES
Following last week’s
front page story on the
theft of copper pipe in
Port Alfred, a scrap dealer
on the R67 just out of
town came forward to say
that his company was
operating with the correct
registration documents
and was completely
l e g i t i m at e .
In the article, and
based on information
received, it was reported
that no registered scrap
dealers operated in Port
Alfred.
Scrap dealer Attie
Adlem explained that,
although out of town, PJ
Scrap Metal was
completely legal.
He said he couldn’t
speak for other dealers,
but knew of four
operating in Nemato.
“Every time someone
comes to us with scrap
we take a copy of their ID
and keep a file for the
police to inspect, which
they do on a regular
basis,” Adlem said.
He and his wife
employed three residents
to assist at the scrapyard,
ROB KNOWLES
he said. “I also take a
copy of all the papers,
including a complete
inventory of all the scrap
on our vehicles when I am
transporting scrap, as
that is the law,” Adlem
said.
If someone selling
scrap could not prove it
was theirs, it was
rejected.
He said there had been
occasions he received the
same ID from different
people, and it was also
rejected.
SAPS spokesperson
Captain Mali Govender
said increased incidents
of copper theft had been
reported since March
2019.
“A task team has been
established to investigate
these cases, which also
entails visiting
second-hand dealers to
ensure compliance,”
Govender said.
“Several arrests have
been made.
“At this stage there is
no indication that a
syndicate is operating,”
she said, adding that the
cases against various
scrap dealers were still on
the court roll.
CRIMEBRIEFS
Reported crime was scarce this
week, going by reports received
from MultiSecurity.
However, those responsible for
copper theft were out and about
again in the past week as reported
in two separate incidents.
On Saturday April 6, just after
6pm, it was reported that thieves
had stolen copper pipes from the
Port Alfred High School tuck shop,
necessitating a quick repair and
prompting school principal Clive
Pearson, to request a guard be
stationed at the premises.
Then again, on Sunday at around
Businessman assures his company is registered and legal
2.30pm, another home in Bromley
Street reported that copper pipes
had been stolen, but it was difficult
for the residents of the property to
establish when the crime had
actually taken place. The residents
also asked that SAPS not be
involved.
Colonel Lizette Zeelie, station
commander of the Port Alfred SAPS,
supported by George Galbraith,
chairman of the Port Alfred
Community Policing Forum, has
asked that all crimes be reported
as, without sufficient information
the police are unable to develop a
complete picture of criminal activity
and develop plans to prevent it.
On Monday, following
a tip-off received by
the Port Alfred K9 unit
that a truck that had
been hijacked on the
that the truck was
apparently delivering
SHOWING SUPPORT: The children of Port Alfred High School, led by Interact president Sheena Louca, assisted Coastal Ghost
Walker, Stefan Graunke, at the back, to collect refuse from West Beach last Friday morning. Graunke, accompanied by his
mom and his three dogs, have travelled along beaches from Richards Bay to Port Alfred and will end his journey at Port
Nolloth. Graunke said he was grateful for the assistance
ROB KNOWLES
Walking along
the sand, from
Richards Bay
to Port Nolloth, Stefan
Graunke is cleaning
up the beaches and
would like people to
join him and assist in
making things a little
better for everyone.
“My walk has not
entirely inspired
people yet and I often
walk alone,” G r a u n ke
said.
However, this was
not the case on
Thursday when
Graunke arrived at
Port Alfred’s West
Beach and was
greeted by an
enthusiastic crowd as
well as over 100
intermediate phase
pupils of Port Alfred
High School who
assisted him to clean
the beach of debris
and refuse.
The social
responsibility event
was organised by
Sheena Louca, head of
the Port Alfred High
School’s Enviro Club
and president of
Interact. Louca said
how grateful she was
to all the sponsors
that helped the
Coastal Ghost Walkers
to continue the
fantastic job that they
are doing promoting
beach clean-ups
across SA.
Graunke also
wanted to offer a big
thank you to those
who had sponsored
his arrival at West
Beach including Pam
Golding, Pick n Pay,
Super Spar, Kowie Vet,
Kowie Toyota and Port
Alfred High School’s
Interact Club.
Graunke, who is
shadowed by his mom
Valeria as well as his
three border collies
Altair, Zephyr and
Ksora, mentioned that
Port Alfred has very
clean beaches,
compared to other
beaches that they’ve
cleaned up.
They were also very
impressed with the
Port Alfred community
for keeping their
beaches clean.
They will be back
next year to visit Port
Alfred’s beaches again
for a clean-up and
urged more of the
community to join
them. Graunke said he
was so impressed and
touched at how
friendly and giving
Port Alfred people
were, especially the
Port Alfred High
School students who
arrived in two school
buses and that he will
never forget their
generosity, support
and warm welcome to
the Town.
He also gave a big
thank you to Louca for
her passionate
suppor t.
His is the fifth of 21
planned for her term
of office and was a
great success.
DA rallies members at campaign meeting
JON HOUZET
With the general election just
weeks away, the DA held one
of its “Let’s Engage”
meetings at St Paul’s Anglican
Church hall last week, with DA leader
in the Eastern Cape legislature Bobby
Stevenson going through the DA’s
m a n i fe st o .
Stevenson was introduced by DA
MPL Jane Cowley, who said he had
spent his entire career in politics,
going back to the old Progressive
Federal Party.
He was the youngest councillor
ever appointed by the PFP and has
served four full terms in the
provincial legislature, having spent
25 years in Bhisho.
“All of us need to be guardians of
democracy and involved in politics in
some way. The moment you let your
guard down and leave it to someone
else, it all slides away,” Stevenson
began.
“Everybody thinks it’s the worst
time to live in – worse than only the
time before,” he said.
“I’m optimistic about the future
and the DA’s growth. I wouldn’t still
be involved in politics if I didn’t
believe in what the DA stands for.”
He said three things were driving
down support for the ANC – the state
of the economy, corruption and
crime.
“Never has the ANC been so close
to losing an election on a national
scale.”
He said the DA was planning to
reduce the ANC’s support in the
Western Cape and retain it, and also
to take the Northern Cape.
He referred to how well the DA had
been doing in by-elections.
Making his point local, he said in
2006 the ANC had won 77% of the
vote in Ndlambe, and by 2016 they
were down to 62%. In the same
period the DA went up from 19% to
31%.
“In Nelson Mandela Bay we went
from 24% to 47%.”
“Your municipality is heading into
coalition territory. It’s not unfeasible
to believe that in 2021 a coalition
would govern Ndlambe,” he said.
He described the Eastern Cape as
a “broken province”, with much that
needed fixing – roads, education,
Making his mark in the radio industry
N TO M B E N TS H A
MSUTU
Former Port Alfred
resident Songezo Mabece
has been appointed to the
presenter’s chair as host
of The View Point on
SAfm, and is ecstatic
about the opportunity.
Mabece’s radio career
took off in 2012 when he
literally walked into the
567 Cape Talk studios in
Seapoint to hand in his
demo for them to listen to
his work, telling them
how how he wanted to be
Not unfeasible that ‘coalition would govern Ndlambe in 2021’
health, housing and water among
them.
He spoke about improvements the
DA had brought to Nelson Mandela
Bay over the two years it governed
the metro, from inheriting a
municipality in debt to leaving money
in the bank.
One of the concerns that came up
in question time is how the DA
chooses its coalition partners, seeing
as how it had lost NMB.
Stevenson said the DA had been
betrayed by one of its own members
in NMB, but in 2021 was going to
campaign all-out for an overall
majorit y.
“Last time I don’t think people were
overly convinced we could win, so
they didn’t turn out to vote. Now that
they’ve seen how we governed, we
involved in radio.
“They listened to my
demo, after that they got
me to do some basic
radio training for a few
weeks, and thereafter I
was given a slot on the
overnight show (midnight
until 4am). This all
happened in a matter of
some six weeks,” he said.
“This lasted for about 19
months [between June
2012 and December 2013]
before I left Cape Town
for Johannesburg.
“It was in
Johannesburg that I had
to cut short my
developing radio career
because employment
conditions [in another
job] did not allow me to
do both.”
In 2013 while still in
Cape Town, he attended a
business breakfast where
he met with radio legends
such as Nada Wotshela
and Andile Noganta.
While he was talking to
them, telling them about
his interest and love for
radio, they inspired him
and led him to believe
that he definitely had a
He said two big things were
hurting the economy. The first was
Eskom, with the impact of
load-shedding being self-evident.
“The DA has a plan to fix Eskom.
The key is allowing independent
power producers to sell to
municipalities and to privatise
Eskom. Eskom won’t fix Eskom. It will
have to come from outside,” he said.
The second big thing hurting the
economy was corruption, he said.
“It’s a deterrent to investment.
Nobody wants to do business when it
involves back-handers and shady
business.”
“It’s critical to grow the economy
and create jobs.”
He also touched on the need to
eradicate corruption in SAPS. The DA
future in radio.
“Six years since that
first meeting, we have
wants to bring back specialised
units, like the anti-drug, anti-gang
and rural safety units that former
police commissioner Jackie Selebi
had done away with, he said.
He said the DA also believed in
enhancing police work with
technology, like body cams and
number plate recognition cameras.
Another policy plank is wanting to
secure SA’s borders, as presently
porous borders allow easy access for
criminal syndicates involved in drug
smuggling, human trafficking and
stock theft.
At the same time, Stevenson said
the DA wants to use social cohesion
programmes to combat the scourge
of xenophobia, of blaming foreigners
for all ills.
In question time, he said securing
this opportunity owes
itself much to them too,
as it does to those who
love me.”
“Getting an opportunity
like this has been
humbling, firstly. I am
under no illusions the
great magnitude of the
honour and privilege it is
major public broadcast
platform. I am, as a
result, under an
obligation to respect
the listeners by
being diligent in my
preparation and
polite (yet
engaging) when on
a i r, ” Mabece said.
borders would start with cleaning up
the department of home a f fa i r s .
The DA also wants to make it
easier for tourists to come to SA by
cutting down on waiting periods and
having online visas.
He reiterated the DA mantra
against “wasting your vote” on a
smaller party. He said parties like the
Freedom Front Plus and ACDP had
never had representation in province.
“You vote for them, that vote is
wasted – a vote that could have
strengthened the DA,” he said.
“There’s no new dawn in SA.
Ramaphosa is just the new driver of
the same broken old bus, the ANC.
“SA’s problems started long before
Jacob Zuma,” Stevenson said. “Yo u
can’t change the ANC, you can only
get rid of it.”
OPINION
Wate r
crisis
lo oming
Three years ago, I wrote a series of
articles on the spiralling expenses,
questionable contracts, abuse of
resources and failure to deliver by Amatola
Water on a project that was meant to solve
Ndlambe’s bulk water needs.
Among those failures which involved
dubious sub-contract work was the reverse
osmosis (RO) plant and huge new reservoir
just north of Port Alfred, which with related
infrastructure for incoming raw water and
outgoing brine, cost about R200-million –
at the time.
We have heard different stories – that it
was never completed and has been sitting
there like a white elephant, or that it was
actually completed but the contractor was
never paid so he will not release the plant.
We have never received a straight
answer from Amatola Water. In fact we
never received any answers from Amatola
Water or the department of water a f fa i r s
(DWA) about the issues we raised at the
time of those stories.
They just ignored them.
One little gem that emerged from
documented minutes of meetings leaked to
this writer, was how an official at the DWA
had a husband who won a contract for a
R13m pipeline from Cannon Rocks to
Alexandria, and she sat in on this bulk
water project’s meetings until she thought
it better to recuse herself.
No problem, said the rest of the
stakeholders at the meeting, we’ll give you
the minutes afterwards. I kid you not.
Then, this same DWA official left the
DWA to take up a job with Amatola Water.
Not even the municipality can get
answers out of Amatola Water.
Eight or so years after this bulk water
project and its “quick wins” started, we still
have the same undrinkable tapwater Port
Alfred has always had. There’s just less of
it now because of drought, and – if our
director of infrastructure is to be believed –
apparently the water table has been
lowered by the drilling of boreholes in
Makana.
Where we know such cause and effect to
be fact, is how Amatola Water’s deep
boreholes in the Oliveburn area detrimentally
affected surrounding farms, drying up
their own boreholes and wetlands. Some
have never recovered, and Amatola did not
even get their anticipated yield.
Our tapwater has been worse than usual
lately because the municipality has been
drawing water directly from the Sarel
Hayward Dam rather than the weir at
Waters Meeting, and bypassing the
balancing dam.
It is of grave concern how rapidly the
Sarel Hayward is dwindling. Residents
need to take seriously that we are on water
restrictions. But our municipality and
government need to intervene now before
we reach a Makhanda water crisis
scenario.
Thank you, Pig
great evening
With all the bad news
– corruption,
load-shedding, petrol
price increase, etc – I
have a gem I would
like to share.
Last Wednesday
evening, we were at
the Pig and Whistle
and they have an
Asian/Continental
evening on
We d n e s d ay s .
They have a separate
menu for specials on
theme days, and we
decided to have the
paella. What a special
surprise the meal
turned out to be –
totally awesome.
A great combination
of fish, mussels,
chicken, awesome
prawns, etc, and
wonderfully spiced
rice. And as for the
price – well in this day
and age that was a
bonus
We were told that on
the previous evening
they had a “build your
own burger” and some
great concoctions
came out. That can
only be fun – taking
my taste into
c o n s i d e r at i o n .
The ambiance and
atmosphere there is
always great.
So this is my thank
you for a great evening
– hats off to the
management, chef and
staff. Please carry on
with your excellent
Excellent service
from plumbers
We arrived at our holiday home on
Sunday afternoon April 7, to discover a
substantial amount of external copper
plumbing pipes had been stolen.
An early Monday phone call to
Jacques Krige of Krige Plumbers,
resulted in Jacques being on site by
lunchtime and all immediate repairs
necessary to reconnect our rainwater
supply and en suite bathroom, were
completed by late Monday afternoon.
Many thanks to Jacques for his
excellent service.
On behalf of all the residents
pianist Pam Gush for the many
once a week.
Even that pitiful performance has
proved to be beyond the
capabilities of the postal service,
and now every third week there are
no deliveries at all.
But it gets still worse, as it has
now been two weeks since post
Drug lords run riot in Bathurst
With reference to the letter by
“anonymous” in the TotT,
edition of March 21, I wish to
comment.
Before moving to Bathurst,
friends mentioned that Bathurst
is the “drug haven” of the
Eastern Cape. I personally took
it with a pinch of salt. However,
having lived in the village for
the past six years, I have been
horrified and seen the open
selling of drugs in the street.
This is a real cause of concern
for citizens of the village.
Having personally witnessed
the hooting of cars of
Thanks all for support
The Bathurst Agricultural
Show is now the fourth or
fifth largest in the
country and the Bathurst
Agricultural Society
would like to thank every
person who was there.
It was a pleasure to
host you.
To all our sponsors, the
show would not be
possible without you, so
we are very grateful.
I must congratulate the
stock section – from the
pigs, poultry, small stock
and all the way up to the
cattle – it was
our community.
We do appreciate all the
practice and commitment that
went into each show. Thank
you.
Sadly, as time moves on and
due to circumstances these
was last delivered to our complex.
Given the high rate of
unemployment, one would have
thought it would be an easy matter
to recruit staff to deliver mail daily.
That this has not been done, must
mean that the Post Office cannot
afford to employ sufficient staff to
provide an efficient service.
prominent people of the village
and others, outside the drug
lords’ homes, it has angered
me as lives are being ruined
due to the “easy come easy go”
availability of drugs.
Village folk have reported it
to the relevant authorities on a
number of occasions and if
they had acted upon it,
Bathurst would become a
peaceful haven for people of all
ages, especially children of the
village who would not be
subjected and intimidated to
participate in this despicable
act.
spectacular. One
comment was that it was
an upmarket show.
To the farmers who had
stock at the show, it was
a privilege to have you
there. “Eaten Today?
Thank a Farmer.”
We don’t know if we
can top the 2019 show
but we sure are going to
try! The Bathurst
Agricultural Society
salutes you all, it was a
privilege. Best regards,
DANNY WEPENER, Bas
president and the Bas team
special shows will no longer
be with us. We all understand,
but want you to know you will
all be sorely missed.
Our best wishes to all for the
future.
GILL PROBART
This in turn points to a problem
with top management and that is
where the pruning shears should be
applied.
I would have written to the Post
Office on this matter, but I feared
my letter would not be delivered, so
I have e-mailed you instead.
DERRICK FELLOWS
SAPS know who the drug
lords are but simply turn a
blind eye as it is apparent that
some members of the force are
in cahoots with them.
The crime rate in Bathurst
has increased and while these
drug lords continue to trade,
from early morning to late
evening, there is no light at the
end of the tunnel.
We as law-abiding citizens
living in the vicinity of the
drug-lords live in fear and have
lost all hope of these
perpetrators being arrested.
Cutting wheat from the
chaff with nutrition
When it comes to wheat you really need
to know its true nutritional value.
You may be aware that white and
sometimes brown bread is not worth
much to your health compared to whole
wheat bread.
Without wheat it is difficult to picture
the current western diet.
Wheat is so well incorporated into
various western processed foods such
as breakfast cereals and sometimes
sausages and hamburger patties.
Due to intensive farming and the
hybridizing development, the grains of
wheat have changed from the by-gone
days of when the Bible spoke of bread
as being the “staff of life”.
There are many varieties of wheat,
including spelt and bulgur wheat which
have more nutrients and a more
digestible form of gluten.
Spelt is versatile, when fermented it’s
made into spelt milk.
When Johann responded to
a plea to collect a dog and
her puppies who were being
surrendered we had no idea
that he would return with
four adults and 16 puppies.
Quick preparations were
made to section off an area
at Retreat 2 Eden where the
mothers could nurse their
pups unhindered by the rest
of the rescues.
The pups have grown into
beautiful adolescents who
will be medium to large size
when full grown.
Spelt flour does not rise as easily and
highly as wheat, but the gluten in wheat
is much harder to digest.
In fact, highly processed wheat bread
consumption has been linked to
constipation and other bowel related
problems.
Modern wheat has more gluten and
far less vigorous husk surrounding it.
This tough outer nutrient coating
makes it harder to harvest but protects
the inner grain from pests and insects.
Plus without this tough coat of husk,
more pesticides are needed to keep out
pests. Anyone with celiac disease
forms of wheat.
While anyone with gluten intolerance
should avoid wheat but sometimes oats
and rye are accepted as the gluten in
these cereals is in a different form.
The actual cereal grain consists of
three basic parts, known as bran, germ
and endosperm.
Endosperm is mostly starch, while
bran is high in fibre and nutrients.
The germ component has nothing to
do with germs, but is rich in nutrients.
Typically white wheat flour is mainly
crushed endosperm.
Sadly manufacturers now need to
spend more to nutritionally enrich
refined flours to replace what was lost
in processing.
It seems after all the processing with
wheat, food just got poorer in value to
your body but more expensive for your
budget!
Question: Tell us about your job.
Answer: I am the proud
co-owner and manager of Serenity
Day Spa at Rosehill Mall in Port
Alfred. I work with a dedicated and
diverse team, who make going to
work a pleasure. Our talented
therapists offer a wide variety of
results-driven treatments, in a
relaxing environment.
Q: What made you get into this
line of work?
A: The idea of helping people
feels better about themselves. I
also love the fact that I get to
build meaningful relationships
with people – in this industry you
get to know your local community,
but you also meet and learn from
people from other cities and
countries – it’s awesome! There
are also always new things to
learn – I love growing my
knowledge and skills as a
therapist and manager.
Q: Describe the most memorable
experience that you have had.
A: On a personal level, it would
have to be the birth of my son, of
course. On a professional level, it
would have to be opening my own
business. To know that after 14
years in the industry, everything I
had learnt and worked so hard
towards could culminate in
achieving this kind of dream really
meant a lot. And then, of course,
to have the hard work that we
have put into Serenity rewarded by
receiving positive feedback from
clients and the award of Top New
Business 2018 from Dermalogica,
well, it just feels pretty amazing!
Q: What makes you happy?
A: Seeing people happy and
content, smiling faces and love.
Q: What makes you angry?
A: Dishonesty and betrayal;
however, I do believe we all have
to go through this in our lives to
make us stronger.
Q: What do you think of the
youth of South Africa – do you
have any advice for them?
A: The strength of our future as
a nation lies within our youth. I
would advise them to think
strategically about what they
would like to achieve and then
pursue their goals without
compromising their values. Always
treat yourself and others with
respect and be kind. Also know
that things take time, so work hard
and be patient. Our values at
Serenity pretty much some it up –
exude passion, take pride, act with
integrity, exhibit excellence and
show commitment.
Q: If you could change one thing
about Port Alfred…
A: The look of the town. Port
Alfred is so beautiful, but a lack of
maintenance can detract from
that. I do believe we need to
spend more time looking after our
community and working together
to improve the look for the
communit y.
Q: What do you like most about
Port Alfred?
A: The community and how
everyone supports each other –
we have a strong community. It’s
really special.
Q: What is your favourite music
of all time?
A: The golden oldies.
Q: Name three people you would
like to invite for dinner.
A: Debbie Merdjan, a strong
business woman in my field; Helen
Purdon, a client of ours at Serenity
and such a positive person with a
great attitude; my mom, because
she knows how to laugh, loves the
golden oldies like me, and takes
an interest in everyone who she
sits down with.
Q: What do you do to unwind
when you are not working?
A: Time with my little boy is the
best, walks on the beach and
being surrounded by family and
friends.
Q: Three wishes for South Africa
A: Positive leadership stripped
of corruption, to rid it of poverty
and for us to stand together as a
n at i o n .
The Lord Jesus Christ
entered Jerusalem riding on
the back of a colt.
The street before Him was
strewn with people’s cloaks
and with branches cut from
surrounding trees.
The joyous singing of the
multitudes that followed Him
filled the air. The prophecy of
the Old Testament was now
being fulfilled.
“Rejoice greatly, O
Daughter of Zion! Shout,
Daughter of Jerusalem! See,
your king comes to you,
righteous and having
salvation, gentle and riding
on a donkey, on a colt, the
foal of a donkey”
(Zechariah 9:9).
The Bible says that
all the starry host, the
sun and the moon, the
seas, mountains and
hills, trees, animals
and birds all praise the Lord.
Creation acknowledges the
Creator through the
symphony of praise it
continually brings before its
M a ke r.
But what about us human
beings, created in the image
of God, and the only part of
creation capable of true
worship? The Lord Jesus
“was in the world, and
I N S P I R AT I O N A L
INSIGHTS
... with Pastor Theo Snyman
though the world was made
through him, the world did
not recognise him. He came
to that which was his own,
but his own did not receive
him” (John 1:10, 11). What a
t ragedy!
“Blessed is the king who
comes in the name of the
Lord!” “Peace in heaven and
glory in the highest” was the
song the disciples sang as
they entered Jerusalem
(Luke 19:38). The
religious leaders
tried to stop
them; to quieten
their rapturous
song of praise!
For the past
2,000 years the world has
endeavoured to silence the
voice of the church by any
means possible.
We should not allow
anyone or anything to stop
us from declaring His
praises. The Lord Jesus said,
“If they keep quiet, the
stones will cry out” ( L u ke
19:40).
N E I G H B O U R LY NOTES
E-mail Rob Knowles at knowlesr@tisoblackstar.co.za or fax (046) 624-2293
or drop in at 29 Miles Street from 8am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday
NDL AMBE is certainly fortunate to host two
nationally important events in April, bringing
much-needed revenue to our area and
putting the Sunshine Coast on the map.
The 111th Bathurst Agricultural Show, one of
the biggest events of its kind in the country,
took place last weekend and, according to
reports received, was an unmitigated
success.
Thanks to Danny Wepener and his team at
the Bathurst Agricultural Society for all their
hard work in putting the show together as
well as for all their preparation work that saw
animal stalls repaired and painted, new
paving laid and even a new borehole dug.
EVERYONE seems excited about the
upcoming Royal St Andrews Hotel Amanzi
Challenge that will take place over 10 days
from Good Friday (April 19) to April 28.
Zwelinzima (Sxeaks) Nkwinti, owner of BS
Sports who is the overall organiser of the
challenge, has managed to put on a fantastic
variety of water sports – from international
surfing to bodyboarding and beach handball
– that can rival some of the other
competitions held at the major centres in SA.
The event that a lot of people are looking
forward to most (see our Vox Pop question on
page 5), is the inflatable boat races on the
Kowie River, at East and West beaches and
out to sea.
See our article on page 18 for all the events
and when and where they will take place.
IT seems like it has always been there to
many, but the Royal Alfred Marina celebrates
its 30-year anniversary in April and will be
hosting a party for invited guests at the
Marina Clubhouse on Tuesday April 16.
Although some might say the ecology and
natural beauty of the area suffered because
of the development, there is no doubt that
the marina has generated funds for the town,
and we would like to take his opportunity to
congratulate the residents of the marina on
reaching this important milestone.
THE Keiskamma Music Academy will hold a
concert at St Paul’s Anglican Church on
Saturday evening, and the Keiskamma Art
Project will also be selling artworks made by
previously unemployed women in the
Hamburg area. Refreshments wil be on sale.
For details of these and other events taking
place in the area, see our Diarise This section
b e l o w.
OUR copper pipe theft story on the front page
of last week’s edition highlighted a possible
organised crime syndicate operating in the
area.
Although police are investigating and say
they have no evidence of any syndicate, the
DIARISE THIS
CROQUET ANYONE? Roger and Sue Darke from the Port Alfred Croquet Club arrived at Damant Lodge recently to arrange a game of croquet for the residents
which was played on the lawns in front of the flats. Benches were placed outside for the spectators and juice and biscuits were served. Residents, most of
whom had never played before, had a fun morning under the direction of the Darkes. In the photo Thelma du Preez is in action while, from left, Ragel
Fleischack, Roger Darke, Peter Fleischack and Mary Walker looked on
fact that copper pipes have been targeted by
criminals over such a short period of time is
certainly evidence that some scrap dealers
are ready to purchase the stolen pipes.
However, since the article we have
discovered at least one scrap dealer that is
legitimate in the area. It would be interesting
to know if there are any others.
A SPECIAL shout out to Talk of the Town
news editor Jon Houzet, who will pass his
50th milestone on Sunday 14.
FURTHER success and congratulations to the
following businesses celebrating another
anniversary and may these lead to many
more, especially Independent Property
Consultants (Van der Riet Street), L.P Gaz
(Bathurst Street), Petticoat Lane (at their new
premises in Pascoe Crescent) and the
Presbyterian Church which is celebrating its
31st anniversary in Port Alfred.
THE South African economy is almost in a
holding pattern, but it’s not just the national
elections that investors are waiting for.
The trade deal between the US and China is
causing nervousness and things will only
return to “normal” once the deal is signed.
Yet our elections and problems arising as a
consequence are certainly not helping inspire
confidence in the future of the country.
Aside from marches and road closures, the
latest book burning of the Gangster State
book by journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh
advocated by ANC Youth League provincial
secretary for the Free State, Reagan Booysen,
has investors nervous as to the future of free
speech in our country.
Booysen’s defiance of the ANC’s
condemnation of the act is ample proof that
certain so-called leaders have their own
agenda and will not listen to authority.
The ruling party must impose tougher
sanctions on anyone who disrespects the
constitutional rights of all citizens and
quickly act against the guilty or else lose
votes in the upcoming elections.
Failure will not only mean a loss of votes, but
is also a red flag to investors.
With 2018’s figures in brackets to compare at
the time of going to press, the rand was
trading at R13.97/$ (R12.07), R18.29/£
(R17.12) and R15.75/ß (R14.94). Gold is
$1,303.05 per fine ounce ($1,354.09) with
platinum at $820.77 per ounce ($935.05).
Brent Crude Oil is trading at $71 per barrel
( $ 7 1 . 74 ) .
SPECIAL thoughts and prayers are with all
those folk who are not well, having or have
already had tests, operations and treatments.
sets sights on the future
ROB KNOWLES
Customer service is high on the
agenda of the new man in charge of
Buco’s Main Street branch, Gerhard
van der Walt, and he intends to make
the store more customer-focused.
“Where I came from, running the
Witbank Buco branch, we had lots of
competition and we all sold similar
products at similar prices. What
separated us from the rest was our
attention to the needs of our
c u st o m e r s , ” said Van der Walt. “T h at
means a new layout for the store and
improving our sales and after-sales
ser vice.”
He said he and his family, wife
Rozaan and children Kaylin and Logan,
having travelled the 1,200km to get to
Port Alfred, are happy they made the
right move and look forward to
becoming part of the community. “My
wife and I wanted a better life for our
two girls,” said Van der Walt.”
Asked for his first impressions of the
store, he said he could see great
potential for the future his job was to
create a complete “c u st o m e r
experience, and that means
friendliness and attention to service.
“People love the brand but, if we do
not provide them with a better
shopping experience they may go
elsewhere. For example, there is only
nine parking outside the store. We are
a small rural town but we need to
develop a big-town ethos.”
While van der Walt says he looks
forward to enjoying all that Port Alfred
has to offer, his primary focus is to put
energy into improving the store and
increasing its customers base. “Thank
you all for the loyal support and I ask
for patience during the next couple of
Are rental properties a valuable investment?
Many of us who own and
love our homes wonder
whether there isn’t merit
in owning more
properties that we can
let to generate income
and create capital
a p p r e c i at i o n .
I have just read two
articles on this subject.
While there are risks
associated with owning
properties, for example,
it could take time to
realise your investment
if you need to, on
balance over the
medium to long term,
property is a great
I am a property bull
because land is
becoming more scarce
and I believe that
properties in our area
are relatively
undervalued, especially
in Port Alfred.
If you decide to build
a profile there are a
number of products
available which will help
you buy your first
investment property and
then slowly accumulate
more.
The secret, of course,
is to speed up your
repayment programme
so that you accumulate
value to put down on the
next property.
months with all the changes,” he said.
“It will all will be worth it.”
The most important
aspect of any investment
is that you get a secure
return.
You need to be sure
that your tenant is
reliable and will pay in
time to settle your bond
r e p ay m e n t .
This is not always easy
to achieve, particularly
in an environment where
the percentage of
defaulting tenants is
increasing.
In an article from
PayProp they claim that
over the last year many
Protecting one’s income
Disability, illness
injury don’t only
happen to others
I have mentioned in
previous articles that
one’s ability to earn an
income, most certainly
can be regarded as
one’s biggest asset.
Some persons may
see the fact rather
differently, but once you
sit down and add
together what your total
monthly income, during
one’s income earning
life, will amount to, I am
certain that all will
agree.
As an example,
without taking salary
increases and inflation
into consideration, we
can calculate R20,000
per month times 12
equals R240,000 per
annum times 40 years.
This simple
calculation already
amounts to R9.6m. One
can only imagine what
the total possible loss of
income over a lifetime
can amount to, if
inflation is taken into
c o n s i d e r at i o n .
I can further assure
you that very few
persons earning
R20,000 per month will
tenants have been
affected by
overcommit ting
themselves, increases in
VAT and a relatively low
business confidence
environment.
It is important that if
you are considering
developing a property
portfolio you surround
yourself with legal,
accounting and property
exper ts.
Please contact me on
simon.oliver@seeff.com or
082-653-5643 if you
would like to discuss
developing a property
portfolio or managing
your rentals.
We are looking to start
our winter warmer
exercise next week. I will
own any asset exceeding
R9.6m, thus confirming
that one’s ability to earn
an income most
certainly will be one’s
biggest asset.
Most people will have
insurance covering their
residential and/or other
fixed property, as well as
their motor vehicles
against damage and
also total loss.
Yes, very few of us
own a house or even a
car worth R9.6m, but to
be protected by full
comprehensive
insurance against all
possible events, is of
extremely high
impor tance.
Having made my
point, I need to ask: “Are
you insured against loss
of income due to
disability, illness or even
an accident?”
This could be a
temporary loss of one’s
earning ability, or even
more serious, a
permanent loss of your
ability to earn a living.
An income replacement
policy has certainly
become an extremely
give you details in my
next article.
Please start looking
for anything warm that
you would like to give to
people who are going to
struggle through this
w i n t e r.
important aspect to be
considered and added to
any insurance portfolio.
There are people who
might argue that “it only
happens to other
people”, but I can assure
you that it can happen to
any person, including
ourselves.
A few months ago, I
was involved in a “freak
accident” and shattered
my shoulder. It was
really not fun walking
around with my arm in a
sling for 10 weeks and
MONEY
M AT T E R S
also not being able to
work and to earn an
income for three months.
The specialist’s, X-ray,
as well as physiotherapy
bills, kept on arriving in
droves.
What a catastrophic
situation, but I need to
repeat, “it does not only
happen to other people”.
It is of vital
importance that
everybody should obtain
advice from a qualified
and experienced
financial adviser to add
income replacement
cover to your existing
insurance portfolio.
Ghanaian born Pastor
John Amoah at the
Christian Men’s
Association breakfast
last Saturday.
Amoah, has been
ministering in East
London since 1984, and
has a church in
Mdantsane called
Mdantsane Community
Church.
The church has other
branches around the
Eastern Cape, and he
recently launched
branches in Marselle
and Alexandria.
He started off his talk
telling the crowd about
his younger days before
he accepted Christ as
his saviour.
He lost his mother at
a young age, and his
father rejected him
when he was still
young.
His aunt took him
and he grew up at his
aunt’s house until he
was a qualified teacher.
“Growing up I knew
nothing about God and
his word, I only knew
how to pray when I was
only in trouble, but
when things went my
way I completely forgot
that there was Jesus.
Then I would live my
life, without
acknowledging His
presence in my life,”
said Amoah.
When he struggled
getting a job and his
life in order, he became
addicted to drugs and
alcohol as means of
coping with difficulties.
He faced challenge
after challenge and
when he was at his
lowest he started
praying to God, asking
Him to save him and
that he will do anything
to serve Him and his
word.
“I accepted Christ the
hard way, because it
was during the most
difficult time in my life,
I was getting drunk
almost every day, just
to cope with life, until I
got tired of it and told
myself I need to make
some changes in my
life. I accepted God, left
Ghana and went to
Swaziland to start a
church because I
believed I was called to
help His people,” he
said.
“When I arrived there,
asking people for help
to start was a huge
mission for me because
I got a lot of no’s,
people just didn’t want
to cooperate. Then I left
and went to East
London – that is when I
opened a church, got
called to be a principal
in Inkwenkwezi High
School, then after that
my main focus has
been on youth. We need
the youth in church,
they need to get closer
to God,” Amoah said.
His main focus is the
youth because they are
the ones faced with the
most difficulties
through drugs and
alcohol. He also
believes that Christ
specialises in
impossibilities.
“Drug addiction
among our youth is at
its highest rate, digital
addiction, teenage
p r e g n a n c y,
pornography, and
suicide glares at us
through the eyes of
teenage suicide,
illegitimacy, and
fatherlessness. If only
the South African
government and other
nations had spent their
millions on spreading
the true gospel of Christ
throughout the nation
and the world, what a
different story would
there have been to tell,”
he said.
“The Lord Jesus
Christ can save and
change you, this is a
big thing to say but it is
true. There is an old
proverb which says,
‘You can change many
things, but you can
never change nature’. It
is time the old proverb
itself was changed for
in the light of the
Gospel it is new nature,
that is the kind of
saviour Jesus is,”
Amoah said.
A RATHER SPECIAL OCCASION
Rhodes University’s 2019 graduation weekend, which
commenced on Thursday (today) morning, will comprise
six separate ceremonies on the cavernous stage of the
Guy Butler Theatre of the 1820 Settlers National
Monument on which will be seated a large number of
the university’s academic staff.
T h u r s d ay ’s ceremonies are at 9.30am and 2.30pm,
Friday at 9.30am, 2.30pm and 6.30pm, and Saturday at
9.30am.
The traditional garden party will be held on the lawns
between the main administration building and Drostdy
Arch on Saturday afternoon.
STRIKING WORKERS BACK AT WORK
Municipal refuse collection workers returned to work on
April 1 after being on strike for more than two months,
without the public being notified in advance for them to
place refuse bags on sidewalks.
A Sunnyside resident who spotted a refuse truck
doing its rounds, said workers’ overalls “looked new”
and they were wearing safety gloves.
Many residents did not leave refuse bags outside their
properties for the Sunnyside collection on Mondays.
Then, in a statement issued later in the week, Makana
executive m ay o r councillor Mzukisi Mpahlwa, apologised
to residents affected by the two-month strike, and at the
same time thanked those who “helped keep the town
clean” during this period.
The statement confirmed that striking workers had
received protective clothing and “tools of trade” on
March 29.
“This means employees can now perform their duties
e f f i c i e n t l y, ” stated Mpahlwa.
He concluded his statement with the words: “Wo r k i n g
together in unison we shall be able to make our city the
cleanest in the province.”
HEFTY SENTENCE FOR POACHERS
There was jubilation inside the courtroom, outside the
courtroom, on the streets, and indeed across the country
– particularly amongst those connected with game
reserves – last week when the three-member ‘Ndlovu
Gang’ were sentenced.
Jabulani Ndlovu (41), Forget Ndlovu (38) and
Sikhumbuzo Ndlovu (39) were sentenced in the High
Court in Makhanda (Grahamstown) to an effective 25
years’ imprisonment each on 55 counts related to rhino
poaching in the Eastern Cape.
The courtroom was packed with Green Scorpions
members, staff from game reserves, poaching unit
members, Eastern Cape Parks & Tourism Agency staff
and members of the public.
HUGE COUNTRY OCCASION
Not too far from Makhanda, as the crow flies, is
Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, and the Signature
Wildlife Auction held there on March 30 was a huge
success.
The sellers were Kwandwe Signature Wildlife, Woody
Cape Wildlife, Buffalo Kloof Private Game Reserve and
Piet du Toit, while buyers came from across the country.
There were 72 lots on auction in the mammoth marquee
that accommodated about 900 people
Also contributing to the success of the event were
sponsors Pam Golding Properties, Kuda Insurance,
Meadowfeed, Smartview and Settler City Toyota. Other
“locals” on the reserve for the auction were Rotarians
who sold their famous burgers, and the Victoria Girls’
High School choir members who were much appreciated.
RHODES TO CONFER HONORARY DOCTORATES
SUBURBAN GO-KART SPEEDSTERS
The Makhanda leg of the Eastern Province and Border
round-the-houses go-kart series in October 1974 saw
some high-speed racing taking place in the area above
the City Lords rugby ground, then home to Albany Rugby
Football Club.
Streets making up the track included Trollope, Fitzroy,
Wolseley, Ayliff, Livingstone and Carnarvon. Racers came
from Port Elizabeth and East London for the event, which
was organised by Grahamstown Round Table and the
Grahamstown Car Club, and promoted by the East
London Motorcycle & Car Club.
I’m afraid no round-the-houses go-kart racing could
possibly take place in Makhanda nowadays, what with
the hundreds of potholes in any neighbourhood where a
track may be laid out.
OBSERVE THE OPENING
lbany Museum management has announced that, after a
lengthy period of closure due to renovations, the
Observatory Museum in Bathurst Street is set to re-open
in June, prior to the 2019 National Arts Festival.
The R2.8m project focused on a complete restoration
of the building, including the roof, floors, walls and
fencing. The exterior has been changed to the original
colours of buttercream and green.
The restoration has been completed, and fixtures,
exhibits and furniture are presently being installed.
Resident Emily O’Meara is a former curator of the
Observatory Museum, and she wrote in the coffee-table
book Grahamstown Reflected that the museum was “the
most unusual home and business premises in the
country, with the captivating camera the cherry on the
top. Bric-a-brac galore, surprises on every floor”.
O’Meara added the building started life as a humble
structure bought by jeweller and clockmaker Henry
Carter Galpin in 1850.
With his additions, it rose to great heights, but had hit
such a low by the 1970s that it was doomed for
demolition,” she wrote.
And now, in 2019, the building has been renovated in
its entirety.
HONOURS IN THE POOL
Congratulations to captain of swimming at Diocesan
School for Girls (DSG) Toni Rafferty on being awarded
FLYING TRY: St Andrew’s College First XV player Guy Rushmere on
his way to scoring a try for his team in the closely contested rugby
match against Grey High School on Lower Field on Saturday. The
match was drawn 17-17
SALES AND SONGS: In addition to the more serious business of bidding on the 72 wildlife lots at
the Signature Wildlife Auction at Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, there was also musical
entertainment in the form of the Victoria Girls’ High School choir, seen on the right. The huge
marquee on the reserve accommodated about 900 people. See story on this page Picture: SUPPLIED
swimming honours. The matric pupil has broken
numerous records and won a multitude of medals since
her grade 8 year in 2015.
MARKET AT THE PROVOST
The Provost Café in Lucas Avenue celebrates its sixth
birthday this weekend, and teams up with SupUrban
Market on Saturday when they will offer food and drink
specials, market stalls and live music from 11am to 5pm.
FORMER BOK’S FATHER DIES
Former Grahamstonian Piet le Roux died in Port Alfred
on March 31 and his memorial service was held at
Kasouga last week. He was the husband of Tinkie and
father of former Springbok rugby flyhalf, Hennie le Roux.
As far as I can recall, Piet le Roux worked for the then
Cape Eastern Meat Co-op in Bathurst Street, while Tinkie
le Roux held a senior position in the Town Clerk’s
department of the then Grahamstown Municipality.
Meanwhile, a photo was posted on a social media
page last week of a rugby team comprising Graeme
College Old Boys/Parents and, reclining in front, is Piet
le Roux. On that occasion in 1984, the team played
Graeme Staff.
Other players in the photo, who readers may
remember, are Dennis Wicks, Ronnie Gleaves, Gavin
Reid, Angus Barnard, Fanie Maritz, Ernie Rothman, Cliff
‘Mac’ MacKenzie, Chicken Gendall, Willie Kingsley, Tony
Perry, Butch Zimmerman and John Hubbard.
SIXTIES SOCCER SCENE
Last week I wrote, under the heading “City on the Green”
about football in Makhanda in the 1960s.
Former Grahamstown City player Trevor Wiblin, now
living in Port Elizabeth, shared some thoughts on the
local football scene in those days.
He wrote that in the early to mid-1960s the East Cape
National Football League (NFL) came into being and
Saints Grahamstown (later to become Grahamstown
City) was admitted, as were Port Elizabeth and East
London teams.
In 1966 Brian Smith, Derek Smith, Smiley Moore, Toy
Rischbiter, Albert Levings and Trevor Wiblin made their
debuts as schoolboys in the ‘big league’.
Other names Wiblin recalls from the 1960s are Saints
Football Club players Turk Perkins, Bennie McLean, Franz
Marmetscke, Rodney Mortimer, Chappie Dyson, Stewart
Fullarton, Neil Eardley and Ronnie Wise, while the Bodill
brothers – Joey, Harold and Stanley – turned out for
Albany United Football Club.
NOT MUCH AT HOME
Graeme College’s remaining rugby fixtures for April are:
Saturday April 13 – Senior teams play Cambridge
High in East London, while the junior teams are at home
to Port Alfred High.
Thursday April 18 to Monday 22nd – First XV takes
part in the St John’s College rugby festival in
Johannesburg where they will play Windhoek High, St
Charles College and St David’s College.

Graeme College sports news
Graeme College were proud to
host Gill College on Saturday, for
one of Grame’s oldest rugby
derby weekends.
Matches were played from u9
upwards, which means it is a
very special fixture.
With the 1st XV participating
in the Kingswood Colllege Rugby
Festival, the Graeme 2nd XV
took on the challenge to play the
Gill 1st XV on the day. It was an
exciting encounter which ended
in a 17-17 draw. The Graeme 3rds
also had a nail biter against the
Gill 2nd XV, and snuck home
wining by one point. Graeme
seemed to dominate the rest of
the fixtures ending the day with
nine wins and one draw.
Graeme College played
against Clifton College on the
first day of the Kingswood
College Rugby Festival. Graeme
College made up a 9 point half
time deficit to win the match
27-21.
Graeme would have been
frustrated in the first half as they
made a number of crucial errors
in their own red zone which
gifted Clifton numerous
opportunities to score points.
When Graeme did eventually get
ball in their opponents half they
during the week. We wish them
good bowling. The entry form for
the Senior men and ladies singles
are on the notice board should
you wish to enter this competition.
The next round of the Doris
at Kenton on Thursday April 18 at
1.30pm.
Duties for the week April 16 to
20: Tabs – Vic Wicks and Garnett
Westley, Bar duty – Peter Wansell,
Lynda Schoning and Colette Reid.
Kowie Bowling Club
Our three Men’s teams came back
from the All Cape with varied
success. Jony Alexander, Roy
Wilkens, Grumpy Enslin, Lennie
Clark and Mike Ryan performed
very well by coming second in
their section Unfortunately they
lost in the first round of the
knock-out.
The other two teams skipped by
Jacques Krige and Steve Minnaar
had a good time without worrying
the scorers too much.
With only 15 sections for the
men and eight sections for the
ladies these tournaments are
battling to survive. The sad state
of the economy and transportation
costs mitigate against players
being able to afford the time and
finances to attend these
tournaments. I can remember
playing in a National in Cape
Town where there were 50
sections.
Mike Ryan’s dad Paddy was a
very popular member of our team
– so much so that at the end of
BALL IN HAND: Simon Cowley securing Graeme College’s lineout ball, on attack against
Clifton at the Kingswood College Rugby Festival
looked dangerous and scored on
both occasions. Graeme trailed
12-21 at the break.
The second half belonged to
Graeme as they spent near on
the entire second half in their
opponents half and managed to
score three tries. The Graeme
College backline was
particularly threatening on a day
where they found space in the
wide channels. Graeme could
not convert the tries, but
BOWLSBANTER
... what’s happening
the tournament we auctioned his
braces.
I attended 17 Nationals and for
the first seven we were four
couples. Yes, we took our wives
and had a most enjoyable time.
We were not quite good enough
to win our section but were
runners-up three times.
To illustrate how fickle the gods
of sport can be we played in a
tournament in Durban where we
lost two games won five easily
and won five on the very last shot.
The next year in Johannesburg
playing with the same team we
also lost two easily, won five
easily and the lost five on the last
s h ot .
The secret of these
tournaments is not necessarily
quality but rather compatibility.
You can put four skips together in
the same team and they might not
do as well as a team composed of
four leads playing for each other.
During a tournament like this
the four players in a team spend
more time together off the green
than on the green. They will each
have their own habits and
idiosyncracies. Some smoke –
others don’t. Some snore and
must bunk in with the other
snorers. Some like to have their
drinks at the club – others like to
relax at home with only the team
Some do not drink at all and fret
while they are waiting for the rest
of the team. Remember you only
have one car
On the green you must
remember that normally at least
one of you will have an off day
Bear with him because tomorrow
managed to win 27-21. It was a
great result against a powerful
Clifton side.
Try scorers: Thuso Mokhele,
Simon Cowley, Lelona Xhaso and
U9A won 48-0
U11B won 32-15
U11A won 12-0
U13A won 51-0
it might be your turn to have the
Last week the curtain came
down on another very successful
Night Bowls Tournament. Sincere
thanks to all who helped to run
the tournament and to the
competitors who also contributed
to the enjoyment of the evenings.
Last Tuesday came with iffy
weather and our leads stayed
away but we still had some very
competitive games with grades 3
and 4 having to lead. Eddie
Hoseck, Keith Benson, and Ronel
Roome went off with the boodle.
Thursday with more stable
weather brought out the leads and
we had a more normal
distribution. It was left to John
Hubbard, Peter May, and Andy
Stuart to win the Mega Bucks.
On Saturday we were in
competition with the Bathurst
Show, the Ladies’ All Cape and a
number of tired men still
recovering from the All Cape. The
Snowball was won.
Good Luck to our two ladies
then playing the Lambs from UK
on Wednesday.
fun filled afternoon and thank you
to Ruth, Di and Stuart for
providing some very tasty eats for
Well done to our Men’s All
Cape team who finished third in
their pool and lost in the Bowl
play-offs. Well bowled Brian, Ivor,
Rob and Tony.
The Kenton internal club
competitions are now in full swing
with matches being played
throughout the week, all players
are urged to schedule their
outstanding matches and make
sure the competition calendar is
up to date.
Mike Palmer was the winner of
last Friday’s attendance draw and
pocketed R700 just for being there
but his wife Lydia was much less
fortunate, confidently picking out
the wrong card in the Joker
Jackpot. The Joker somehow
manages to stay undercover but
with a rapidly depleting pack, it’s
surely just a matter of time before
somebody finds him. Who knows
it could be you, just make sure
you get down to the club this
Friday evening.
Thank you to Ken Nixon and
Mike Palmer for your excellent
service behind the bar last week.
The next round of the
tremendously popular Dias
Wednesday afternoon and
competition is keen with Rob
Bowker and Stompie Bellingan
leading the way and a host of
eager bowlers snapping at their
heels. Be sure to be there this
week to make sure you stay in the
running.
players to the RPAGC for Saturday
morning’s mixed competition to be drawn
into one three-ball and four mixed
four-balls to play the usual 2-to-count
Stableford alliance.
Ronel Hough, Liz Gatenby, Fanie Smit and
Brian Hayward carded a winning 89 points
pipping runners-up Lynn West, Glynnis
Renecle, Derek Sinclair and Terry Harris’s
87 points by two.
The most golf was played by Heather van
Harmelen, Margie Reid, Rob and Louisa
Cross who carded 78 points.
There was some compensation for their
covey, however, when Louisa’s drive was
adjudged closest to the pin on the eighth
to win the bottle of wine on offer, courtesy
of the RPAGC.
Brian Hayward had a good day by netting
a great 66 and holing the competition’s
only two-club (sixth).
KGB RESULTS
Tuesday April 2: The normal two-to-count
Stableford alliance was the format on
Tuesday with the application of the
Portuguese Convention whereby three nett
birdies or better on any hole received one
bonus point. Thirty six players were drawn
into nine four-balls.
Using this Iberian rule to their advantage,
winners Johny Johnson, Dave Curran,
Rusty Hallam and Dave Kirk carded a
massive 99 points to outstrip the rest of
the field. In fact runners-up Bob Shaw,
Derek van Harmelen, Bryan Robinson and
Steve Kennedy were all of 13 points
behind on 86.
The balance of the field were all in arrears
of these scores, the lowest being (1) Steve
Daly, John Muggeridge, Andy Manson and
Heinz Czepluch and (2) Neil Loundar, Paul
Fryer, Len Bohnen and Martin Weaver,
both covies carding 76 points to share the
much to be avoided Hamer en Sukkel
trophy at the 19th hole.
Par three birdies were holed by Derek
Sinclair (sixth) and Gavin Richards
(eighth). The best nett rounds were shot
by Dave Kirk (64), on the eve of his return
home to the UK, Dave Curran (68) and
Jimmy van Rensburg (70).
Friday April 5: A bit of drizzle around on
Friday morning, not to everyone’s liking,
limited the field to just 30 players, still a
very good turnout considering the
conditions. The rain did hold off for most
of the morning although a light sprinkle
towards the end did dampen the spirits
and the clothing of a few.
Scores were generally low with the
winners visitor Rose Andrew, Dave Rose
and Nick Oosthuizen scoring 79 + 5 = 84
points. Gavin Richards, Jimmy van
Rensburg, Bob Shaw and Heinz Czepluch
occupied second position after carding 82
points.
The dreaded Hamer en Sukkel trophy
adorned the 19th hole table of Andy
Manson, Derek van Harmelen and Brian
Reid after the hapless three-ball only
managed to card a lowly 61 + 5 = 66
points.
There were no individual performances of
note. Two-clubs were made by Rose
Andrew (sixth), Ian Gatenby and Don
Thomson (eighth).
Two on the trot
for PAHS rugby
Victoria Park Derby Day
In a tightly contested game against
visitors, Victoria Park from Port
Elizabeth, the Port Alfred High School
first team demonstrated determined
play and won 14-12 on Saturday.
This is the second year in a row that
PAHS has won against Victoria Park
and 2020 will be a much-anticipated
event!
The second team also triumphed,
posting a score of 19-5 against the
visitors. The U15 team was less
fortunate, losing their game 29-12.
It was a clean sweep of wins for the
visitors on the hockey field with b ot h
the hosting first team boys’ and girls’
teams losing 0-2.
Fortunes were not much better on
the netball courts where only the U14
PAHS team managed a win of 7-6.
The U16 netball team lost 8-20 and
the first team lost 9-23.
Clarendon Park Primary rugby
fe s t i va l
The PAHS U11 rugby team travelled
to Port Elizabeth to participate in the
Clarendon Park Primary rugby festival.
The visitors represented PAHS
immaculately, made lots of new friends
and stole the hearts of the other
coaches and the parents who hosted
them for the night.
It was noted that they showed
respect and good manners.
Unfortunately, they faced very tough
opposition and lost all their games.
Achievers assembly
The first Monday of every term is
reserved for an Achievers Assembly in
the PAHS hall where headmaster Clive
Pearson acknowledges achievements
and presents awards.
Jarryd Harty received merit awards for
tennis. Mr Pearson announced that
Liyabona Xanti, Yonela Fani and
Abenathi Maneli have been selected
for the Sarah Baartman netball team.
He also acknowledged the following
pupils for being first academically in
their respective grades in the first term
of 2019: Ziyaad Rahman (Gr 4), Laura
Averbach (Gr 5), Reece Coetzer (Gr 6),
Shanalea Delport (Gr 7), Chani
Campbell (Gr 8), Lise-Mari Coetzee (Gr
9), Carissa le Roux (Gr 10), Tammi
Booysen (Gr 11) and Gemma Knott (Gr
12). As at the end of the first term,
Orffer House (yellow) is in third place
with 251 points, Harvey House (red) in
second place with 400 points and
Hobson House in first place with 416
points.
Windsong winners at
the Bathurst Show
Riders boast armfuls of rosettes from various classes
HAUL OF AWARDS: Jo-Anne Hamilton with Fairy
Lane, loaned by Isobel Bowker at the Bathurst
Agricultural Show
Four days of solid
competition
yielded rewarding
results for two
Windsong Event Centre
riders at the recent
Bathurst Agricultural
S h o w.
Megan Maritz, who
resides in Port
Elizabeth and has been
riding Windsong
REAPING ROSETTES: Megan Maritz, with her horse National King at the
Bathurst Show. The other horse she rode and won awards with, Windsong
Quizzical, had already returned home
Quizzical owned by
Windsong proprietor
Helen Grapes for three
years now, returned
home with an armful of
rosettes from a wide
variety of classes.
Maritz also enjoyed
great success with her
own new acquisition,
National King.
”Swopping from
horse to horse and
arena to arena with a
change of equipment
and attire is no mean
feat. This is where
friends and family play
an important role in
suppor t,” Grapes said.
Bathurst resident
Jo-Anne Hamilton had
her father and
grandmother assisting
in her successes.
Jo-Anne had two
rides on horses from
the Windsong yard
(Shaw Park Road near
Kleinemonde) – Jet
Star owned by Grapes
and Fairy Lane owned
by Isobel Bowker and
generously loaned to
Jo-Anne for the
duration of the Bathurst
S h o w.
As a very new
pairing, the couple
came up trumps, really
performing well in all
spheres – from
performance riding to
utility classes and
show-jumping.
“The atmosphere in
the main arena at
Bathurst can be electric
at times. It really needs
for a calm horse to be
able to operate at its
best and a
clear-headed, confident
rider to deal with it all.
“So places in
competitions are well
earned,” Grapes said.
Both girls had wins in
jumping classes as well
as showing classes,
proving their versatility
and ability as
outstanding riders at all
disciplines.
They both qualified
for the Bathurst Hack
and Tack Supreme
Champion award,
narrowly being pipped
to the post by visitors
from Makhanda and
Port Elizabeth.
Both Windsong
Quizzical and Fairy
Lane also displayed
their versatility and
good manners when
being used for the
Master class.
Grapes, riding
Quizzical, and
neighbour Sally Miller,
riding Fairy Lane,
strutted their stuff in a
good class.
Grapes was
victorious on her
homebred eye-catching
mare, but attributes her
success to thousands
of hours in the saddle
and a good farm horse.
To further prove their
PSIRA: 1241091 SAIDSA: 890
worth, Windsong
Quizzical and Fairy
Lane were loaned to the
local Youth Show
handlers to display
their handling and care
of horses from the
ground (part of four
elements of their
syllabus), behaving
impeccably for the two
youths – A u st i n
Mhlonyane and
Sibonga Mhlonyane.
The two horses also
took part in the fancy
dress competition
where they appeared as
a unicorn (Quizzical)
ridden by fairy princess
Caitlyn Pienaar and
Batman (Fairy Lane)
ridden by Jonathan
P i e n a a r.
Fairy Lane took third
