These propositions of Aristotle concerning the<br />
Divine Spirit contain the first attempt to find a<br />
scientific basis for Theism. Here first the idea of God<br />
as self-conscious intelligence was logically deduced<br />
from the principles of a philosophical system instead ox<br />
being borrowed from religious notions. And on the<br />
very threshold we are confronted with the difficulty the<br />
solution<br />
of which is the final problem of all systems of<br />
theistic speculation : how are we to define the idea of<br />
God so that while maintaining his essential difference<br />
from all finite reality, we may yet preserve his personality,<br />
and vice versa ? Aristotle represents God as<br />
self-conscious Spirit ; on the other hand, he deprives<br />
Him of body and senses, and, not content with this,<br />
declares not only action and creation, but the<br />
direction<br />
of the will itself towards an object, to be incompatible<br />
