From the Programme Editor
A warm welcome to our visitors Horsham, and
also to the match officials.
Horsham have exciting times ahead, as after
spending 10 years “in exile) at Worthing, Horsham
YMCA and lately Lancing, their new
ground at the Hop Oast, on the outskirts of
Horsham, is coming on well. Its worth having a
look at their website to see pictures of the latest
building works including the laying of the
pitch. This will be a difficult game with Horsham
trying to seal a play-off place.
There are no secretary notes today as he is on
another one of his many cruises!
There have
been two defeats
for us
since the last
programme,
home to
Hythe Town
and away to
Greenwich
Borough, the
latter one being
particularly
disappointing.
Chris
writes more
about that
game in his
notes.
We still need
one win to
make mathematically
sure
that we don’t
get relegated.
The good
news is that
following the completion of our new dressing
rooms and other small works around the
ground, we have now succeeded in passing
our ground grading inspection. If we had not
had the new dressing rooms then we more
than likely would have been relegated. An FA
letter has stressed that Dressing rooms must
be 18 square metres by March 31st or clubs
will be relegated to Step 5, unless work has
started, planning permission is in place and the
available finance is demonstrable. Already
Aylesbury FC have been told that they wont
get a reprieve and will be relegated. We can
only feel sorry for those clubs who are effected
as its only through the exceptional generosity
of Greg McHardy that we have survived this
scare.
The transfer deadline for clubs at our level has
now passed and we have made two new signings
in Kane Phillips, who has rejoined us, and
a very promising young man in Harry Taylor, who
has joined us after banging in goals for
Millwall youth, so welcome to these two. Chris
includes some up to date news of player availability
in his notes.
This programme gives extensive coverage to
the changes in FA rules that will be coming in
on the 1st June. The article covers three pages,
but I thought that it was worth the space so
that you can be up to speed ready for the new
season!!
Locally there is extraordinary news coming out
of Herne Bay FC. It appears that their budget
has been far too generous and with a majority
of contracted players they are fast running out
of money. Joint managers, well known to us,
John Embery and Jermaine Darlington, have
walked out and a board statement said “The
social media trolls have finally won the day.
The management team have been hounded
out of the club and as such the club are playing
Whyteleafe with Anthony Deer taking the team.
(Ed note they did defeat Whyteleafe!)
Whether we will have a team to field next Saturday
is in the lap of the footballing gods. Relegation
back to the SCEFL looks to be inevitable.
Whether there will be a club next season is unclear.
The board have put so much effort over the
years but the past two weeks has become so
demoralising.
These keyboard warriors who hide behind false
titles post what they like without knowing the
full facts, criticising the board and their decisions
and it is these individuals who have destroyed
this football club.
Hopefully we can all get behind and support
Anthony for the remaining matches.”
You can now see why we are very reluctant to
have players on contract, as most clubs with
our income can’t afford to pay players who are
not playing, even though we would dearly love
to.
Enjoy the game today.
From the Manager
take their foot off the pedal thinking they are
safe from relegation, that they have done
enough for this year. As I have made absolutely
clear from day one 'Average' is not good
enough for me, it never will be.
After such a positive couple of months, we
have been brought back down to earth with
three defeats in a row, two of which we really
should have been looking at a further six
points.
As I have always told the players, in public I will
always defend you, however, in the dressing
room and on the training field I will tell you absolutely
how I feel about your performances.
Against Greenwich Borough, for the 4th game
running we have been slow to start, there are a
number of reasons for this of which we are in
the process of rectifying, needless to say it
wont be the case next season.
We now have five games, including today’s,
remaining, three extremely challenging fixtures
coming up against good teams in the top half of
the table and then two tricky fixtures against
relegation rivals who are fighting for their lives,
none of which will be an easy encounter. So
now, instead of talking about a great turn
around and finishing well within the top ten, we
are challenging to once again pull away from
the rest of the bottom half teams which as it
stands mathematically we need four points
from these five games to be certain of survival.
What a difference two weeks can make in this
league. It shows me every player is only as
good as their last performance.
Having said this I fully believe this team are
more than good enough to resolve this situation
which is of our own making.
On a more positive note, it was great to see
Lex back in action for the first time since his injury
in January, and we welcome Tommy Fagg
back to the fold this week, who will be available
for today’s fixture.
Last Saturday’s disappointment was the final
straw for me in terms of loyalty and giving players
a chance to impress, who really should be.
We have some fantastic footballers here, however,
when one player has an off day most
teams can cover that player, but when several
do at the same time, the problem becomes unsurmountable.
I felt we were not good enough
in all areas on Saturday against a bottom of the
table team who did not have much quality within
their set up, it said it all when the opposition
fielded a 40 year old veteran against us. But
yet, we showed a real lack of desire and determination.
Our work rate and desire is a basic foundation
of my teams. The players have all been spoken
to and my feelings have been made absolutely
clear. I believe, this young squad who are still
learning important elements of football at this
level, have been too naive of late. After six wins
from seven they seem to think its acceptable to
Injury news - I was very disappointed with the
conditions of the pitch at Greenwich, holes everywhere
some outlandishly dangerous, with attempts
to cover them up with sand, it was only
a matter of time before someone got seriously
injured, I am furious the game was even allowed
to continue due to it's condition. This led
to Lewis Chambers damaging ankle ligaments
and now out for the remainder of the season
having fallen badly into one of them.
I would like to thank the travelling fans and I
personally apologise for the display you witnessed
last Saturday. Ultimately, as the Manager,
I have to take full responsibility. We will
be seeking to put this poor run of performances
behind us and get back to our usual standards.
Horsham — A Brief History
The first Horsham Football Club was founded in
1871, though its existence largely depended upon
enough players being available to form a
side.
In 1881 the club was firmly re-established and,
in September 1882, helped found the Sussex
County Football Association before becoming
became founder members of the West Sussex
Senior League in 1896, winning the championship
in 1899/00, 1900/01 and 1901/02, and
claiming the Royal Irish Rifles Cup in 1900.
Having initially played at both Hurst Park and
Springfield Park, the club secured Queen Street
as its permanent home in 1904 but some lean
form over the ensuing years saw Horsham overlooked
when the Sussex County League was
created in 1920 and it wasn’t until their fourth
West Sussex Senior League triumph in 1925/26
that they were invited to make the step up. The
1930s was a golden era for the club and the
County League was won six times during the
decade, Horsham regularly scoring over one
hundred goals a season. Cup competitions provided
more silverware with the Sussex RUR
Cup (seven times) and the Sussex Senior Cup
(twice) both finding their way back to Queen
Street before the outbreak of war. When peace
returned to the world, Horsham won the first
post-war title in 1947, the RUR Cup in 1946,
1949 and 1951, and the Sussex Senior Cup in
1950.
In 1947/48 the club reached the First Round
Proper of the FA Cup for the first time, taking a
first minute lead against Notts County before
losing 9-1. Having had successive applications
to join the Athenian League rejected, the club
changed tack and successfully applied to become
members of the Metropolitan League that
included the ’A’ sides of top Football League
clubs, the reserve sides of ‘professional’ nonleague
clubs and a few amateur teams and
Horsham confounded common opinion by winning
the championship at the first attempt. However,
over the years the league became stronger
and stronger and eventually the amateur
clubs struggled to make any impact at all and
Horsham finished the 1956/57 season at the
foot of the table, having already decided to quit
the league in favour of the Corinthian League
where they began a period of consistent progress,
finishing thirteenth, ninth, eighth and fifth
before their best ever season in 1961/62 when
third place was achieved.
Following a mass exodus of players, Horsham
were forced to rebuild with a young, local team
that would peak at fourth place in 1964/65 only
to become the first Horsham side ever to be relegated
the following season. Under coach Pat
Tobin, the team was rebuilt once more and this
reaped dividends in 1966/67 when the club
once again reached the First Round Proper of
the FA Cup, with the visit of Swindon Town
drawing a record 7,134 crowd to Queen Street.
Despite this achievement this was a frustrating
period of near misses for the club who finished
third, third and fifth and suffered three consecutive
defeats in the final of the Sussex Senior
Cup. By now nicknamed the Hornets, following
a supporters’ competition, the club appointed
Roy Osborne as their new manager and the
change brought immediate success with the
championship of Division Two achieved in
1969/70, the Division One title in 1972/73, and
the Sussex Senior Cup in 1972. Instead of taking
their place in the Athenian League Premier
Division, Horsham became members of the
Isthmian League when that competition expanded
to two divisions in 1973/74, finishing eighth
in its first season and rounding the season off in
style by winning the Sussex Senior Cup. Now
under the guidance of Tony Elkins-Green,
1976/77 saw the Hornets finish in a best ever
sixth place but financial problems threatened
the club’s very survival and only the dedicated
work of chairman Frank King saw the club
saved from bankruptcy and dissolution although
it couldn’t prevent a young amateur team from
finishing bottom of Division One in 1979/80 and
the club was relegated to the new Division Two.
Horsham endured some dark times under numerous
managers in the 1980s, finishing bottom
of the league in 1983/84 and 1989/90, when only
a successful relegation play-off against Letchworth
Garden City maintained the club’s Isthmian
status.
Continued
Horsham — A Brief History Cont
Progress was made under the management of
Peter Evans from 1990, during which time the
club reached the final qualifying round of the FA
Cup, though under his replacement, John
Yems, Horsham once again propped up the entire
league in 1993/4 leading to the appointment
of former captain Mark Dunk as manager. He
led his side to the Division Three championship
in 1995/96, narrowly missing out on a second
successive promotion before departing in 1997.
Three years of lower mid-table obscurity followed
before former Crawley Town boss John
Maggs took over as manager in January 2000,
taking a struggling side out of the relegation
zone to Division Two runners-up in three seasons
and a promotion play-off final appearance
in 2004/05. Promotion to the Premier Division
was achieved the following season with another
runners-up finish and the club went on to establish
itself as a consistent performer, even challenging
for a place in Conference South in
2007/8 before ending up eleventh. The Hornets
made history in 2007/08 by reaching the second
round proper of the FA Cup and taking
eventual League One champions Swansea City
to a replay, with both matches shown live on
Sky TV. Having sold their ground for redevelopment
at the end of the season, Horsham played
at Worthing during 2008/09 and again reached
the fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup
where they took Conference side Stevenage
Borough to a replay before ending an injuryravaged
year in thirteenth place. Season
2009/10 saw a return to Horsham, entering into
a groundshare agreement with their old neighbours
Horsham YMCA as their quest for a new
ground continued, but fortunes were on the
wane and an acute overhaul of the club’s finances
in 2011 resulted in the departure of
Maggs after eleven years. A turbulent 2011/12
found the club under three different managers,
with Simon Colbran ultimately unable to prevent
the side from returning to Division One South. A
season of stability followed, with the Hornets
ending the campaign in fifteenth and claiming
the Brighton Charity Cup for a second successive
season. The club entered a new chapter in
November 2013 when, following Colbran’s departure
to Crowborough Athletic, long-serving
player Gary Charman was appointed as first
team manager. Charman steered the club to
16th place but a poor run of results the following
season led to him being replaced by two
more former players, Anthony Storey and Cliff
Cant, in January 2015 however the pair were
unable to save the club from relegation so former
East Preston manager Dominic di Paola
was appointed towards the end of the campaign.
A season long battle with Eastbourne Town followed
before Horsham took the title by eleven
points to secure a record-equalling eighth
County League title, thus securing an immediate
return to the Isthmian League for season
2016/17. The club began a ground share at
Culver Road Lancing.
The return to the Isthmian League in season
2016/17 saw Horsham finish 16 th in the table
and last season they finished a more respectable
12 th . Incidentally seasons 16/17 and 17/18
saw Sittingbourne finish 1 place higher each
year!
The big news now is that Horsham are all set to
move into their first permanent home following
the 10 years of ground sharing. The ground is
called the Hop Oast Stadium and is located on
the outskirts of the ground.
FA Rule Changes For Next Season
The 133rd AGM of The International FA Board
(The IFAB) in Aberdeen, Scotland on
2 March 2019 approved a number of amendments
to, and clarifications of, the Laws of the
Game for 2019/20.
Three changes were approved following 2
years of worldwide experiments:
• The introduction of yellow and red cards for
misconduct by team officials
• A player being substituted leaving the field at
the nearest point on the boundary line
• At a goal kick and a free kick for the defending
team in their own penalty area, the ball is in
play as soon the kick is taken (it can be played
before it leaves the penalty area)
Other changes include: clearer wording for
‘handball’, attacking team players must be at
least 1m away from a defensive ‘wall’, the
goalkeeper only has to have one foot on the
goal line at a penalty kick, and a new dropped
ball procedure (including a dropped ball being
awarded if the ball hits a match official and
goes into the goal, team possession changes
or a promising attack starts).
All changes come into force on 1st June
2019.
The following summarises the main Law
changes for 2019/20 with an explanation for
the changes (in alphabetical order).
Dropped ball, Laws 8 & 9
Changes
• If play is stopped inside the penalty area, the
ball will be dropped for the goalkeeper
If play is stopped outside the penalty area, the
ball will be dropped for one player of
the team that last touched the ball at the point
of the last touch
• In all cases, all the other players (of both
teams) must be at least 4m (4.5yds) away
If the ball touches the referee (or another
match official) and goes into the goal,
team possession changes or a promising attack
starts, a dropped ball is awarded
Explanation
The current dropped ball procedure often leads
to a ‘manufactured’ restart which is
‘exploited’ unfairly (e.g. kicking the ball out for
a throw-in deep in the opponents’ half) or an
aggressive confrontation. Returning the ball to
the team that last played it restores what was
‘lost’ when play was stopped, except in the
penalty area
where it is simpler to return the ball to the goalkeeper.
To prevent that team gaining an unfair
advantage, all players of both teams, except
the player receiving the ball, must be at least
4m (4.5 yds) away.
It can be very unfair if a team gains an advantage
or scores a goal because the ball has
hit a match official, especially the referee.
Free kicks, Law 13
Changes
When there is a ‘wall’ of three or more defenders,
the attackers are not allowed within 1m (1
yd) of the wall; an attacker less than 1m (1yd)
from the ‘wall’ when the kick is taken will be
penalised with an indirect free kick.
When the defending team takes a free kick in
their own penalty area, the ball is in play once
the kick is taken; it does not have to leave the
penalty area before it can be played
Explanation
Attackers standing very close to, or in, the defensive
‘wall’ at a free kick often cause management
problems and waste time. There is no
legitimate tactical justification for attackers to
be in the ‘wall’ and their presence is against
the ‘spirit of the game’ and often damages the
image of the game.
The experiment where, at a defending team
free kick in the penalty area, the ball is in play
once it is kicked and does not have to leave
the penalty area, has produced a faster and
more constructive restart. Opponents must remain
outside the penalty area and at least
9.15m away until the ball is in play. The same
change has been made to the goal kick (see
Law 16).
Goal celebrations, Law 12
Changes
A Yellow Card for an ‘illegal’ celebration (e.g.
removing the shirt) remains even if the goal is
disallowed
Explanation
Cautions for inappropriate goal celebrations
apply even if the goal is disallowed as the impact
(safety, image of the game etc.) is the
same as if the goal was awarded. - Cont
FA Rule Changes For Next Season—Cont
Goal kick, Law 16
Changes
The ball is in play once the kick is taken; it can
be played before leaving the penalty area
Explanation
The experiment that at a goal kick the ball is in
play once it is kicked, and does not have to
leave the penalty area, has created a faster
and more dynamic/constructive restart to the
game. It has reduced the time ‘lost/wasted’ including
stopping the tactic of ‘wasting’ time
when a defender deliberately plays the ball before
it leaves the penalty area knowing that all
that will happen is the goal kick will be retaken.
Opponents must remain outside the penalty
area until the ball is in play.
Handball, Law 12
Changes
• Deliberate handball remains an offence
• The following ‘handball’ situations, even if
accidental, will be a free kick:
• the ball goes into the goal after touching an
attacking player’s hand/arm
a player gains control/possession of the ball
after it has touched their hand/arm
and then scores, or creates a goal-scoring opportunity
the ball touches a player’s hand/arm which
has made their body unnaturally bigger
the ball touches a player’s hand/arm when it is
above their shoulder (unless the player has
deliberately played the ball which then touches
their hand/arm)
The following will not usually be a free kick,
unless they are one of the above situations:
• the ball touches a player’s hand/arm directly
from their own head/body/foot or the head/
body/foot of another player who is close/near
• the ball touches a player’s hand/arm which is
close to their body and has not made their
body unnaturally bigger
• if a player is falling and the ball touches their
hand/arm when it is between their body and
the ground to support the body (but not extended
to make the body bigger)
• If the goalkeeper attempts to ‘clear’ (release
into play) a throw-in or deliberate kick from a
team-mate but the ‘clearance’ fails, the goalkeeper
can then handle the ball
Explanation
Greater clarity is needed for handball, especially
on those occasions when ‘non- deliberate’
handball is an offence. The re-wording follows
a number of principles:
• football does not accept a goal being scored
by a hand/arm (even if accidental)
•football expects a player to be penalised for
handball if they gain possession/control
of the ball from their hand/arm and gain a major
advantage e.g. score or create a goalscoring
opportunity
•it is natural for a player to put their arm between
their body and the ground for support
when falling.
•having the hand/arm above shoulder height is
rarely a ‘natural’ position and a player is
‘taking a risk’ by having the hand/arm in that
position, including when sliding
•if the ball comes off the player’s body, or off
another player (of either team) who is close
by, onto the hands/arms it is often impossible
to avoid contact with the ball
When the GK clearly kicks or tries to kick the
ball into play, this shows no intention to handle
the ball so, if the ‘clearance’ attempt is unsuccessful,
the goalkeeper can then handle the
ball without committing an offence
Kick-off, Law 8
Changes
The team that wins the toss can now choose
to take the kick-off or which goal to attack
(previously they only had the choice of which
goal to attack)
Explanation
Recent Law changes have made the kick-off
more dynamic (e.g. a goal can be scored directly
from the kick-off) so captains winning
the toss often ask to take the kick-off.
Medical breaks, Law 7
Changes
• Difference between ‘cooling’ breaks (90 secs
– 3 mins) and ‘drinks’ breaks (max 1 min)
Explanation
In the interests of player safety, competition
rules may allow, in certain weather conditions
(e.g. high humidity and temperatures),
‘cooling’ breaks (from ninety seconds to three
minutes) to allow the body’s temperature to
fall; they are different from
‘drinks’ breaks (maximum one minute) which
are for rehydration.
• The team’s penalty taker can have (quick)
treatment/assessment and then take the kick
• The goalkeeper must not be touching the
goalposts/crossbar/nets; they must not be
moving
• The goalkeeper must have at least part of one
foot on/in line with the goal line when the kick is
taken; cannot stand behind the line
Explanation
It is unfair if the kicker needs assessment/
treatment and then has to leave the field and
cannot take the penalty kick.
The referee must not signal for the penalty kick
to be taken if the goalkeeper is touching the
goalposts, crossbar or net, or if they are moving
e.g. the goalkeeper has kicked/shaken them
Goalkeepers are not permitted to stand in front
of or behind the line. Allowing the goalkeeper to
have only one foot touching the goal line (or, if
jumping, in line with the goal line) when the
penalty kick is taken is a more practical approach
as it is easier to identify if both feet are
not on the line. As the kicker can ‘stutter’ in the
run, it is reasonable that the goalkeeper can
take one step in anticipation of the kick.
Players’ equipment, Law 4
Changes
Multi-coloured/patterned undershirts are allowed
if they are the same as the sleeve of the
main shirt
Explanation
Manufacturers now make patterned undershirts
whose sleeves are the same as the main shirt
sleeve; these should be allowed as they help
match officials’ decision-making.
Quick free kick and YCard/RCard, Law 12
Changes
If the referee is about to issue a YC/RC but the
non-offending team takes the free kick quickly
and creates a goal-scoring opportunity, the referee
can delay the YC/RC until the next stoppage
if the offending team was not distracted
by the referee
Explanation
Occasionally, an attack is stopped by a cautionable
(YC) or sending-off (RC) offence and the
attacking team takes a quick free kick which
restores the ‘lost’ attack; it is clearly ‘unfair’ if
this ‘new’ attack is stopped to issue the YC/RC.
However, if the referee has distracted the offending
team by starting the YC/RC procedure,
the quick free kick is not allowed. For a DOGSO
offence, the player will be cautioned (YC) and
not sent-off (RC) because the attack was restarted
(as when advantage is applied for a
DOGSO offence).
Substitutes, Law 3
Changes
A player who is being substituted must leave
the field by the nearest point on the touchline/
goal line (unless the referee indicates the player
can leave quickly/ immediately at the halfway
line or a different point because of safety, injury
etc.)
Explanation
To stop a player who is being substituted
‘wasting’ time by leaving slowly at the halfway
line (which is not a Law requirement) the player
must leave at the nearest point (as with an injury)
unless the referee indicates otherwise, e.g.
if the player can leave quickly at the halfway
line, there is a safety/security issue or the player
leaves on a stretcher. The player must go
immediately to the technical area or dressing
room to avoid problems with substitutes, spectators,
or the match officials. A player who infringes
the spirit of this Law should be sanctioned
for unsporting behaviour i.e. delaying the
restart of play.
Team officials, Laws 5 & 12
Changes
A team official guilty of misconduct will be
shown a YC (caution) or RC (sending- off) *; if
the offender cannot be identified, the senior
coach who is in the technical area at the time
will receive the YC/RC
* Law 12 will have a list of YC/RC offences
Explanation
The experiment with YC/RC for misconduct by
team officials has been successful and has revealed
many benefits at all levels, including for
young referees dealing with ‘difficult’ adult
coaches. If the offender cannot be identified,
the senior team official (usually the main coach)
in the technical area will receive the YC/RC (as
the person responsible for the other team officials).
Match Reports by Tony Rickson
9th March 2019
Bostik South East
Sevenoaks Town 0 Sittingbourne 1,att 193
When the time comes to look back on Sittingbourne’s
incredible run of five successive
wins, then this will be the one that’s hardest to
remember.
It was a bit scrappy, it was definitely spoiled by
a chilly and strong wind, and there weren’t that
many goal opportunities at either end.
Which is why this was such a good win by Sittingbourne.
They had to battle it out, they had
to dig deep, they had to run and compete and
tackle and make sure they were doing it all just
that bit longer and harder than the home side.
And they got their reward with an 85th minute
winner by young sub Liam Middleton, his first
goal for the club after becoming one of Chris
Lynch’s first signings back in January.
It gave Sittingbourne their first double of the
season, having beaten Sevenoaks 4-1 at home
before Christmas.
It gave them their second clean sheet of the
season – that’s just a penalty and a header
from a corner scored against them in the last
four games. Not a single goal from open play.
And it took them up to 12th in the Bostik South
East League, leapfrogging over Sevenoaks,
and surely consigning to the dustbin all the
fears of possible relegation that were so much
to the forefront before Lynch came in and
waved his magic wand.
With Ben Fitchett back at Margate, Sittingbourne
made just the one change from the
team that beat Faversham in the local derby the
previous Saturday, Kwasi Amoah making his
first start at left-back and Jack Morrell switching
to central defence.
And what a pairing Morrell and Tommy Fagg
made at the back – they were the rock on which
Sittingbourne built a team that comfortably
thwarted everything Sevenoaks could throw at
them. Well, everything apart from a couple of
alarms later in the first half.
The wind was at its strongest in that half and it
did its best to spoil the game. Sittingbourne got
forward to force corners and free-kicks in dangerous
positions, but so hard were they to control
that none of them amounted to much. And
when Sevenoaks tried to get the ball forward,
so often was it overhit that goalkeeper Patrick
Lee had only to collect them or let them run out
for goal-kicks.
Sevenoaks did get the ball in the net after 25
minutes from a free-kick that swung deep into
the area only for the assistant referee to signal
offside, and they had fierce appeals for a penalty
for handball rejected just before half-time. I
didn’t see anything, but so concerted and unanimous
were the home players’ appeals that you
felt there must have been something in it. No
good them fiercely complaining to the referee
after he’d blown the half-time whistle, though –
he wasn’t going to give it then.
Having had only a Chris Barnard shot saved by
the diving keeper to show for their first half attacks,
Sittingbourne were much more dangerous
in the second half and quickly established
themselves as the better side.
Both Barnard and Henry Woods had shots that
were too close to the keeper, Izzy Adebayo had
an effort fizz wide and Roman Campbell won a
couple of flick-ons in dangerous positions from
Lewis Chambers’
throw-ins only for no-one to claim the second
ball.
Sevenoaks hadn’t had much of a look-in all
through the half but suddenly had a bit of a flurry,
Sittingbourne having to be brave and determined
to keep out a couple of corners and freekicks
in dangerous positions.
It always looked as if Sevenoaks’ defence was
more vulnerable when attacked on the ground
rather than with high balls, and just such a
move gave Sittingbourne their glorious winner
with five minutes left on the clock.
Sub Billy Lewins and Campbell combined well,
and from Campbell’s neat through pass, Middleton
burst into space behind the defence and
confidently and coolly finished it with a shot into
the far corner past the advancing keeper.
That made it 18 points out of a possible 21 –
Sittingbourne’s best run for a number of years.
The fans, as noisy as ever here, are lapping it
up, and the players look like they’re enjoying
every minute of it, too.
You can’t beat an away win – and that’s four of
them on the bounce now.
Bostik South East
Whitstable Town 2 Sittingbourne 1, att 177
When a well-struck corner doesn’t even reach
the penalty area then you know the wind is
playing havoc with a game.
And when all three goals float over the keeper
and go in at the far post, well … again, you
know the way the wind’s blowing.
Yes, the ferocious Whitstable wind spoiled this
game, making it much scrappier then it could
have been. But then again it was the same for
both sides and the home team battled just that
bit harder to ignore the conditions and stop
their opponents playing.
Lots of energy, commitment and battling has
been Chris Lynch’s basic demand from his
team but for once Sittingbourne came up a bit
short.
They defended well enough – both Whitstable
goals were long shots – but in the end they
suffered just their second defeat in eight
games, and were beaten for the first time in an
away game after four wins on the trot.
Harry Barkaway was drafted in for his debut in
the back four with Tommy Fagg away, and Billy
Lewins was preferred to Henry Woods after
a couple of impressive substitute appearances.
It was such a windy day down by the seaside
that football was never going to be easy and
the loyal Sittingbourne fans made short work of
any traffic difficulties by immediately getting
behind their team.
They even had a special song as he warmed
up for Whitstable sub Nick Treadwell, who was
once a Sittingbourne favourite, but it was another
ex-Brickie, Miles Cornwell, who headed
wide a great early chance for his team after a
swift build-up.
Sittingbourne didn’t show much in the opening
half-hour, eventually getting forward for Chris
Webber to hit a low shot wide and Tim
Babbington to shoot straight at the keeper from
a good position.
Whitstable continued to win plenty of the ball
without looking too dangerous, but took the
lead after 33 minutes when Stannard hit a
speculative left-foot shot from 25 yards and it
seemed to hold up enough in the wind to
sneak in high off the far post.
Sittingbourne needed to hold on till half-time
and then regroup, which is what they did, coming
out with renewed vigour and a three-man
defence to try to wrest the game back.
They had a good chance with a free-kick
for handball just outside the penalty area but
Roman Campbell couldn’t it get beyond the
wall.
Whitstable seemed content to hold on to their
1-0 lead but they fluked a second on 54
minutes when Wright looked to be crossing to
the far post from out on the left and the ball
sailed over Patrick Lee and into the far corner.
Sittingbourne knuckled down to the fight and
soon pulled a goal back when Babbington cut
in from the left, dummied the covering defender,
and found the furthest part of the goal with
a well-aimed shot, his third goal in four games.
Whitstable were happy to respond by looking
for the odd counter-attack and Cornwell twice
got clean on goal, but Lee saved well the first
time and the other one he shot wide.
Without playing much fluent football, fair
enough given the conditions, and without getting
much in the way of 50-50 decisions from
the referee,
Sittingbourne mounted some pretty invigorating
late pressure. The home side somehow
survived a couple of scrambles in their own
goal area and then keeper Eason made the
decisive save of the match, flinging himself to
his left to keep out Campbell’s shot on the turn
in injury time.
So Whitstable completed a 2-1 double over
Sittingbourne this season – an important result
for them given their precarious position and the
fact they’d only won once previously since
Christmas.
For Sittingbourne, their winning run was going
to come to a halt at some time and for a young
team packed with decent and skilful players,
this was hardly going to be their sort of match.
