Canada temperature rising twice
as fast than rest of world - report
Human activities being seen as the major cause
The study by Environment and Climate
Change Canada, found that while global
temperatures have increased by 0.8C since
1948, Canada has seen an increase of 1.7C.
"While both human activities and
natural variations in the climate have
contributed to the observed warming
in Canada, the human factor is
dominant," the report said.
"It is likely that more than half of the
observed warming in Canada is due to
the influence of human activities."
Dozens of government scientists and
academics were involved in producing
the study which warned that many of
Here are the
top 10 airlines
as ranked by
A survey of the best airlines in the world
compiled by TripAdvisor has once again
placed Singapore Airlines at the top.
Qatar Airways came second with
Taiwanese carrier EVA Air rounding
out the top three.
After winning the top prize for the
second consecutive year Singapore
Airlines CEO, Mr. Goh Choon Phong
said in a statement that he "wished to
thank our customers for their ongoing
support, as well as our staff from all
around the world."
Released Tuesday, Asian carriers
dominated the top ten list with four of
travelers' favorite carriers coming from
the region. Southwest Airlines won best
North American airline and was the only
U.S. carrier to make the global top ten.
the issues were now irreversible.
"The science is clear - Canada's climate
is warming more rapidly than the global
average, and this level of warming
effectively cannot be changed," Nancy
Hamzawi, of Environment and Climate
Change Canada said.
The majority of warming felt in
Canada and around the globe is the
result of burning fossil fuels.
And the report suggests a grim
future for Canada if it fails to reduce
emissions with deadly heatwaves and
heavy rainstorms becoming common.
"Climate change is real, and Canadians
across the country are feeling its impacts,"
said Catherine McKenna, Canada's minister
of environment and climate change.
"We need to take action now. Practical
and affordable solutions to fight climate
change will help Canadians face the
serious risks to our health, security and
economy, and will also create the jobs
of tomorrow and secure a better future
for our kids and grandkids."
Many well-known airlines, including
British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and
American Airlines, didn't feature.
Within the North America category,
Delta Airlines was named "Best Major
Airline" while WestJet was named as
Canada's best airline and Air Canada was
deemed to have the best Business Class.
TripAdvisor also recognized the
winning airlines in four distinct
service classes. First Class was taken
out by Emirates, Qatar Airways won
the Business Class segment, Air New
Zealand won Premium Economy while
Singapore Airlines was top for Economy.
TripAdvisor said the Travelers' Choice
award winners were based on the quality
and quantity of flyer reviews and ratings
for airlines published on the website
from January to December last year.
We all feel that if we have a beautiful
smile and no complaints we have a
healthy mouth. That may not always
be true.
Having a healthy smile involves
taking care of our oral hygiene so that
we continue to maintain oral health
from birth till old age.
It’s not a difficult task to achieve. We
can start adopting small changes in
our daily routine to reach this goal.
Brushing twice daily, flossing
and using a mouthwash helps in
maintaining oral hygiene. A regular
dental checkup once in 6 months can
diagnose a new cavity and help to
treat them without a stress on your
mind or the pocket.
We should include fibrous foods
and good sugar foods like fruits
and vegetables in our diets. We
should avoid bad sugar foods like
aerated drinks, energy drinks, chips,
chocolates, toffees and caramels.
Fibrous foods help in keeping our
oral cavity free from plaque and tartar
buildup.
Other risk factors to be avoided
include smoking, chewing of tobacco,
paan and betel nut. People with these
habits are at a high risk of cancer
of the oral cavity, throat and lungs.
Chewing of betel nut results in
tightening of the oral mucosa which
cause difficulty in opening the mouth
and swallowing.
If we adopt these few methods and
practice them in our daily routine, we
will be able to irradicate oral diseases
and thereby increase our overall health.
Let’s take care of our teeth & in turn
they will take care of you.
Xiaomi looks to
monetise internet
services in India
After beating Samsung in smartphones,
Xiaomi is now planning to take on the
likes of Netflix, Amazon Prime, Spotify,
Paytm and Google Pay by monetising
internet services in the Indian market.
The Chinese firm, counted amongst
the top five most valuable technology
startups, wants to generate revenue
and profit from streaming of movies
and videos, music, digital payment
and applications, and will invest a
significant proportion of the recent Rs
Rs 3,500 crore fund infusion to expand
into services, Xiaomi India managing
director Manu Kumar Jain said.
“Xiaomi globally made less than 1%
profit margin from hardware or device
sales in 2018, and we have stated that will
never make more than 5% profit margin
on hardware,” he said. “It is the internet
services which will make money for us.”
Jain said Xiaomi globally has three
financial pillars – devices, retail and
services — and the last one is yet to be
monetised in India. “Designing and
selling hardware is only half the job
for us. Remaining half of the job is to
engage with customers and sell internet
services to grow fast,” he said.
The company wants to monetise
streaming content from Mi Video
and Mi Music, file transfer tool Mi
Drop that has already hit 100 million
downloads. Xiaomi has just launched
Unified Payments Interface (UPI)–based
payment application Mi Pay, and will
soon commercialise Mi Credit, which is
a marketplace from where consumers
can get access to instant loan from
partners like KreditBee and ZestMoney.
Google Tulip to OnePlus
Warp Car: Top April Fool’s
Day pranks from tech
companies
Grown in the Netherlands, Google Tulip can talk to plants(Google)
A smart assistant that can real-time
translate what plants are speaking! File
cleaner that can actually clean your
phone’s display! A smart shirt that
changes colours with a click on app!
Sounds too good to be true?
Tech companies around the world
joined April Fool’s Day fun with some
really interesting pranks. As expected,
Google led the game. This year, Google
introduced “Google Tulip”, an AI that
could understand what tulips are
saying. Google went on to claim the
AI could even translate into dozens of
human languages.
“Google is uniquely positioned to
solve the challenge of speaking with
plants. Building on an advancement
called Neural Machine Translation, we
worked with Wageningen University &
Research to map tulip signals to human
language. After two years of training,
we were finally able to add Tulipish as
a language to Google Home’s recently
introduced Interpreter Mode,” wrote
the company in a blog post.
If you thought Google Tulip was
bizarre, here’s what Google Japan
announced. It showcased a smart spoon
that could bend and even supported
microUSB and Bluetooth. Committing
to the prank, Google Japan also
launched a Github project.
Back in India, OnePlus launched
“OnePlus Warp Car.” An electric
supercar, the device has been “designed
around the idea people can build on the
design at home, adding new features
and replacing worn out parts.”
colourX, a Silicon Valley start-up
focusing on smart wearables has
launched a “Smart Shirt” on Snapdeal,
which allows users to change the colour
of the shirt through a mobile app.
Jabra launched Jabra Earbud(dy)
TM, touted as “the world’s first shared
headphone.”
“Engineered for shared music
moments, the headphones come with
an ultra-light headband that extends
seamlessly to accommodate the perfect fit
for every pair of buddies, so you’ll never
have to enjoy another music moment
alone,” said the company in a release.
What’s so funny about AI humour?
That it is still not human enough to know when the joke’s on it. Thank goodness!
Will we have to rewrite the description
of the adjective ‘robotic’ and deem it
a synonym for ‘human’? Don’t laugh,
because once they do, that may just
happen.
So far, artificial intelligence (AI)
has been on track to better humans
from menial or complicated tasks to
chess and the performing arts. But the
one thing AI has not been able to do
is spontaneously laugh — at itself or
us. The difference between it and us,
therefore, is merely a chuckle.
Given that much of humour is based
on context — especially in these
politically correct times — and even
expression and timing, a bank of
information can theoretically equip AI
to churn out a pun or two, but a proper
joke would be a logical nightmare for it
to compute.
That database would also not enable
it to understand when someone pulls
its (metaphorical) leg — and there’s
no fun if a machine just doesn’t get
it. Why anyone would want to josh
around with AI at all is another matter,
of course.
The consequences of AI not seeing the
funny side and taking things literally
instead, of course, is no laughing
matter. No wonder some experts insist
that on learning that people ‘died
laughing’ at a joke, some AI entity
in the not-too-distant future could
logically conclude that terminating
someone or something may be a hoot
and proceed seriously to do so. Let’s
just keep humour to ourselves.
Paytm Money receives
SEBI Approval to start
stock broking services
Paytm is now fashioning itself as an
end-end financial services company.
The company, Paytm Money Limited,
has received the approval from
Securities and Exchange Board of
India (SEBI), the apex regulator to start
stock broking. Paytm says it is now
closer to becoming a full-stack wealth
management platform, which is what it
had set as objective for itself.
It also announced that Paytm Money’s
membership with exchanges — BSE and
NSE – has also been approved.
With this approval in the bag, the
company has plans to expand the
offerings to its customers in the
investment space including facilitating
trading of a variety of capabilities
and offerings on our platform, such as
trading in equities and cash segments,
derivatives, ETFs and more exchange
traded products.
Having obtained the approval and
creating the infrastructure as detailed
above, Paytm may start sending out
invitations to its existing base of
customers to sign up with it for stock
trading and other activities. It has to
work out the fee structures and other
conditions before that.
Apple starts
assembling iPhone 7
in Bengaluru facility
Giving an impetus to its India
manufacturing plans, Apple has started
the assembling of iPhone 7 at its
supplier Wistron's facility in Bengaluru.
Taiwanese industrial major Wistron
already assembles iPhone 6S in the
country.
"We are proud to be producing iPhone
7 in Bengaluru for our local customers
furthering our long-term commitment
in India," an Apple spokesperson told
IANS on Tuesday.
The assembling of iPhone 7 began
last month.
Wistron, which announced last
year plans to invest Rs 3,000 crore in
the Narasupra industrial sector in
Karnataka's Kolar district, started
Apple operations with assembling lowend
iPhone SE and later iPhone 6S.
According to Wistron India head
Gururaj, the company would set up an
iPhone making unit in the 43 acres of
land allotted to it, with employment
potential of over 10,000 people.
The new Wistron facility is also set to
manufacture a wider range of Apple's
devices.
Apple is slowly but steadily
strategizing its plans to make deeper
inroads in a country where over 450
million people use smartphones, and
assembling iPhone 7 is another step
towards gaining more ground.

shoes, she was accused of and sued
for plagiarism in 2017 for creating a
replica of Aquazzura Italia’s “Wild
Thing” sandal.
“I’m so excited to get back into the
world of fashion,” Trump said in an
email to Hyperallergic. “And working
on Yeezy sneakers has always been a
dream of mine.”
“I believe that my clothes are the future
of fashion” West told Hyperallergic.
“And with Ivanka on board, we can
make fashion great again.”
Following her father’s presidential
campaign, Trump’s fashion brand
suffered due to boycotts and
controversies that resulted in lost sales
and retailers removing Ivanka Trump
products from their shelves. However,
West is confident that with him on
board, sales will flourish.
“Everything I touch turns to gold,”
West said. “With ‘Make America
Yeezus’ I’m putting the Ivanka Trump
name back on the fashion map.”
PM Modi inspired
sarees a big hit this
election season
Narendra Modi’s fashion statements
have elicited huge reactions. And this
general election, citizens are more
inclined towards thematic clothing.
After Modi jackets flooded the market,
the Modi effect is widely spreading in
the form of ‘Modi sarees’.
Printed on a black background
embellished with flowers and candles,
the sarees have become a new trend in
Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur. Speaking
with ANI, Anjali Sahu, a local resident,
said, “We came out looking for a saree
that shows our support to our PM.”
“He is the only PM who has done
so much for the nation. He brought
Abhinandan back. I came to buy a saree
that supports our army,” she said.
Meanwhile, another resident, Richa
Sahu said, “Prime Minister has supported
our nation and so I support him. I have
bought the surgical strike saree.”
Anuj Jain, a businessman, told ANI,
“This is our way of showing support
towards the Prime Minister. The most
demanded till now have been the surgical
and air strike sarees. There are ‘Mann Ki
Baat’ and ‘Modi Vision’ sarees too.”
Indian fashion
retailers keep fingers
crossed on rising
online clicks without
commensurating profits
Online retailing, which was considered
as the end in itself is now being realized
as only a stepping stone or a marketing
effort by a number of fashion retailers.
In recent years, companies have
continued to focus on building
their online presence through both
e-commerce marketplaces as well
as their own digital platforms, thus
seeking to tap into consumer demand
for convenience, revealed the India
Business of Fashion Report 2019
released at the forum.
Free delivery, easy payment options
such as cash on delivery, frequent
discounts, a wide product range and the
ability to compare products and prices
have made online shopping both easy
and convenient, the report said.
But the fact remains that consumers
still prefer to have a touch and feel of
the product particularly when it comes
to fashion that attracts them to the trial
room of the brick and mortar physical
retail store, panelists said.
The report also highlights the
continued dominance of store-based
retailing following the personalized
experience that it offers to the
consumers.
Mick Jagger will undergo surgery to
procedure and recovery period, the
Rolling Stones postponed the North
American leg of their No Filter tour,
which ran from April 20th to July 29th.
When the postponement was initially
announced, a rep for the band said,
“Mick Jagger has been advised by
doctors that he cannot go on tour at this
time as he needs medical treatment.
The doctors have advised Mick that he
is expected to make a complete recovery
as possible.”
Jagger said in a statement, “I really
hate letting you down like this. I’m
commits suicide after
Me Too accusation,
writes ‘my death is
The founder and bassist of the Mexican
rock band Botellita de Jerez, 64-year-old
Armando Vega Gil, killed himself on
Monday after posting a suicide letter
on Twitter that said he was falsely
and anonymously accused of sexually
abusing a minor.
“I will say this categorically, this
accusation is false,” Vega Gil’s letter
said. “Let me make it clear that my
death is not a confession of guilt, on the
contrary it is a radical declaration of
my innocence. I just want to clear the
path my son will walk in the future.”
The representative for Botellita de
Jerez, Paola Hernandez, said she spoke
with Vega Gil at around 2.00 a.m., some
two hours before his death.
“He was really sad and pissed off, he
didn’t know how to clear his name. He
said he wasn’t guilty ... he was worried
about how his son would take all
this,” Hernandez said during a radio
interview.
Vega Gil ended his letter saying:
“Don’t blame anyone for my death, this
suicide is a conscious, voluntary, free
and personal decision. Hasta pronto.”
Mithun Chakraborty’s
son Namashi to debut
in a film starring
Ayushmann Khurrana
Mithun Chakraborty’s younger son
Namashi is all set and raring to go with his
debut! Bollywood Hungama’s EXCLUSIVE
sources have reported that he has already
bagged his first project and he will
be seen in Anubhav Sinha’s next film
titled Article 15 which has Ayushmann
Khurrana as the main lead! Now,
this is a big jump for the young actor
who started his career as an assistant
director in a film which starred his elder
brother Mahaakshay Chakraborty’s film
Ishqedarriyaan. The film was a flop but
Namashi marked his film career. Now, it
will be interesting to see him alongside
Ayushmann who is currently on a high! We
had exclusively told you that Ayushmann
is playing a cop in the said film.
Ayushmann’s film Andhadhun
smashed all box office records and
emerged as one of the most successful
films of 2018. Along with Andhadhun,
Badhaai Ho starring Neena Gupta
too was a total winner. Therefore, it
is a big thing for a young talent like
Namashi to work with Khurranna in
his first film itself.
Aishwarya Rai
Bachchan wants to
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is one of
the most loved and popular actresses
we have. The actress was last seen in
Fanney Khan where she played the role
of a singer. Given that a lot of actresses
today are venturing into production,
when Aishwarya was asked about the
same in an interview with DNA, she
said, "There are a lot of talks happening
about production. I have been getting
feedback from many people, so, it’s
encouraging. However, I haven’t
seriously dwelled on this thought.”
She also added that she has worked in
the industry enough to be a team player
and guess she has it in her to be explore
different profiles. When specifically
asked about direction, Aishwarya stated
that direction is definitely on her mind.
"I do want to direct a movie someday.
There’s been chatter, but I have never
set time and energy to work on it. Now,
I should be seriously thinking about
it. My colleagues have always teased
me and said, ‘Why don’t you turn a
producer or director and make a film of
your own?’ So, maybe, a few years down
the line, I should be able to live up to it.”
‘Being Goan in Goa more
important than being Indian’:
deputy CM Vijai Sardesai
Panaji: Being a Goan in Goa is more
important than being an Indian, the
coastal state’s deputy Chief Minister
Vijai Sardesai said on Monday.
Sardesai, who heads the regional
Goa Forward party which claims
to aggressively espouse the cause
of retaining Goa’s unique identity,
made the remark while speaking at a
function organised by the Goa Nepali
Society here. “All in all you also have
to accept the unique living style of
Goans, the Goan-nes which we call
Road fatalities in
Goa at 15-year low
despite increase
in traffic
The number of accidental deaths on
roads in Goa came down to a 15-year
low in 2018 even as the vehicular traffic
increased, the state government has said.
According to a report released by the
traffic police department on Tuesday,
despite the year-on-year growth rate of
13.9 per cent in the number of vehicles
on Goa's roads, there was 5.31 per cent
decrease in accidents last year.
The government said there are around
14.10 lakh vehicles in Goa, where twowheelers
account for a major share of
68.95 % followed by cars around 20.76 %.
"There is a significant reduction in
accidental deaths. Around 21.32 per
cent less number of people were killed
in motor vehicle accidents last year as
compared to 2017, and this figure is the
lowest in last 15 years," the report said.
An analysis of fatal accidents revealed
that 55.64 per cent vehicles involved in
such incidents were two-wheelers.
Likewise, 69.46 per cent victims of the
fatal accidents were two-wheeler and
pillion riders.
The data also revealed that self-driving
accidents topped the chart with almost
82.92 per cent such cases.
‘Goenkarponn’. It is more important
than being an Indian. In Goa, we need
to be Goenkars (Goan),” Sardesai said.
“Goa is a little different than the rest
of the country. We have a different
identity, language, our culture is
different than the rest of the country.
Our history is different than the rest of
the country. It is important that Goa is a
very cosmopolitan, tolerant, secular and
a liberal state, which is known for its
tourism, hospitality and the loving and
kind nature of the people.” Sardesai’s
Goa Forward’s rise over the last few
years has been attributed to the political
outfit’s focus on Goa-centric issues.
“Our government in Goa is also very
liberal, but at the same time we are very
much conscious that Goa should remain
Goa. Goa cannot be yet another simple
part of India. We have to maintain and
preserve our distinct identity, with that
comes our architecture, with that comes
our culture, tradition and everything.
“I do hope that you all will become
Goenkars in course of time and respect
the laws of the land, respect the culture
and traditions of Goa,” Sardesai added.
North Goa taxi
body wants
GoaMiles shut
Panaji: The North Goa Yellow and
Black Taxi Association on Monday
demanded that the Goa Tourism
Development Corporation’s (GTDC)
GoaMiles taxi aggregator service be
discontinued. The cabbies alleged that
the service was eating a major chunk of
their business.
“Our business as it is has been
suffering owing to competition from
rent-a-cab services and the Kadamba
transport corporation’s (KTC) airport
bus service. GoaMiles has made
matters worse,” president, Panaji
Yellow and Black Taxi Association,
Gurudas Pai said.
The yellow-black taxi counter started
at the Goa airport in 2012. There are
approximately 350 taxis stationed at the
Goa airport at any given day.
The taximen gave the government
a seven-day ultimatum to resolve the
issue, failing which they threatened to
THE PLACE
Sushi Pizzeria Coffeteria
Did you know? according to etiquette you shouldn’t send a piece of pickled ginger in the mouth along with
sushi or rolls. Ginger has strong taste and aroma and will not allow you to fully enjoy the treat. It is meant
to “clean” the taste between two pieces of sushi. Sushi is considered to be an aphrodisiac, because the
two most common types of fish that are used, salmon and mackerel, are known for their high content of
omega-3 fatty acids, which help to produce the stimulating hormones.
Do you want to know more interesting facts? Ok. 5 curious facts about head chef and owner Dmitry: 1st
- 14 years in Goa, 2nd - raising beautiful daughter Maria, 3d- master of mouthwatering sushi, 4th -played
cello for 11 years, 5th -proud to build up wood-fired oven with his own hands. And one more important thing
about him - the famous brand Smirnoff was born in his family 120 years ago.
So The Place has indoor with AC and outdoor seating arias, fast wifi, catering, parking and even ping-pong
table. It’s cosily and homely here. What is really exciting – free cocktail for ladies from 4 to 7PM every day!
Mystery behind Garfield
phones washing up on French
coast for over 30 years solved
Locals had long suspected a lost shipping container was to blame
for the novelty landline phones.
For more than 30 years bright orange
“Garfield” phones have been washing up
on the French coast to the bemusement
of local beach cleaners, who have finally
cracked the mystery behind them.
Locals had long suspected a lost
shipping container was to blame for
the novelty landline phones, modelled
on the prickly feline cartoon character,
that have plagued the northern
Finistere beaches for decades.
“Our association has existed for 18
years and in that time we have found
pieces of Garfield telephones almost each
Half of Huawei's
flagship phones
could be foldable in
two years, says CEO
Although it was beaten to the punch
by the Samsung Fold (and the Royole
FlexPai if you're feeling charitable),
Huawei threw down a major gauntlet
earlier this when it unveiled its Mate
X foldable handset, delivering what is
arguably the most appealing folding
smartphone design to date.
Now, it appears the company is
going all-in when it comes to foldable
smartphones, with Huawei CEO
Richard Yu offering some refreshingly
frank comments about the technology
in a new interview with GSMArena.
time we clean,” said Claire Simonin, the
head of local beach cleaning group Ar
Viltansou in Brittany.
But it wasn’t until a local resident
revealed that he had discovered the
container after a storm in the 1980s
that they were finally able to locate it
-- wedged in a partially submerged cave
only accessible at low tide.
“He told us where it was... it was very,
very dangerous,” Simonin told AFP
after an expedition to track it down.
“We found this incredible fissure that
is 30 metres deep and at the very bottom,
Kolkata Durga
Puja nominated
for UNESCO
Intangible
Cultural Heritage
list
If everything goes as planned, the
Durga Puja of Kolkata may finally get
the UNESCO World Heritage status
next year. Kolkata Durga Puja is India’s
official nomination for UNESCO’s
2020 Representative List of Intangible
Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Sangeet Natak Akademi, under the
Union Ministry of Culture is the nodal
agency that sends recommendations for
cultural institutions in India that need
there were the remains of a container.”
“Under the boulders in front of
the entrance, we found 23 complete
handsets with electronics and wires.
They were everywhere,” she added.
But the mystery is not fully solved.
“We have no idea what happened
at the time: we do not know where it
came from, what boat,” said Fabien
Boileau, director of the Iroise Marine
Nature Park in Finistere.
protection and preservation. According
to the Akademi website, Durga Puja, a
“conglomeration of different cultures”,
is India’s choice for the 2020 update of
UNESCO cultural heritage list.
UNESCO has a growing
Representative List of the Intangible
Cultural Heritage of Humanity as it
keeps adding entries from across the
world to it every year.
Quoting Professor Tapati Guha
Thakuta, who led a five-member research
team prepare the nomination dossier for
the Sangeet Natak Akademi, a report in
Hindustan Times said: “Kolkata’s Durga
Puja has developed a special artistic
profile, which no other festival has with
modern artists and designers coming
together to produce a new urban art.
This gives it a unique dimension.”
Applying for the World Heritage
status, the SNA has said in the
nomination form: “…Durga Puja,
unlike many other regional religious
festivals of India, has a thriving global
identity. Through this inscription, the
already growing international face
of Durga Puja will find a new order
of legitimacy and artistic creativity,
adding to the multi-cultural dimensions
of the event and encouraging Bengali
communities overseas to sustain the
collective vigour and cultural fervor of
the celebrations.”
“And we don’t know if several
containers fell into the water, or only
one.”
The dry-witted Garfield, first
dreamed up by illustrator Jim Davis
in the late 1970s, has since spawned a
television show, a film series starring
Bill Murray as the voice of the titular
cat, and a merchandising empire
worth hundreds of millions of dollars
annually.
Guinness Book
Declares MS Dhoni's
2011 World Cupwinning
Bat The
'most Expensive Ever'
On April 2, 2011, MS Dhoni struck a pose
that is iconic in cricket history. With
four runs to win from 11 balls, Mahi
lofted a Nuwan Kulasekara ball over
long-on to send a packed Wankhede to
utter euphoria. The ball struck the meat
of the bat and the sound of it assured
everyone in the stadium that India will
lift the World Cup again after a gap of 28
years and Mahi's follow-through became
an iconic picture.
What is relatively less known is the
fact that Dhoni's Reebok labeled bat is
the most expensive bat in the history of
the game.
The most expensive cricket bat was
Mahendra Singh Dhoni's bat sold at
auction for £100,000 ($161,295), bought
by R K Global Shares & Securities Ltd
(India), at the M.S Dhoni’s ‘East Meets
West’ Charity Dinner, in London, UK,
on 18 July 2011. The bat was used by
Mahendra Singh Dhoni in World Cup
2011 finals on 2 April 2011 art Wankhede
Stadium at hit the winning shot.
When asked about how many foldable
devices it could have in its stable over
the next few years, Yu said "I think that
on a flagship level in two years, half of
our devices could be foldable."
Of course, the CEO is more than
aware of how expensive its first
attempt at the technology is, stating
that "folding phones are just in the
beginning and the market share is
small, they cost a lot and it's very
expensive to produce such devices."
However, Yu believes that the cost
will reduce significantly over time. "I
think in two years foldable phones will
have a similar price to current flagship
phones," said Yu.
Revealing that his primary handset at
the moment is the still-in-development
Huawei Mate X, Yu also discussed the
just-announced P30 Pro, stating that "In
the future we can make a foldable phone
sized in half of this one [P30 Pro], we
have plans for a smaller foldable phone."
Dream it, Do it: Weird
jobs around the world that
you should look for
Once in a while, you come across job advertisements that look too good
to be true — except that they are not. Here are some that appeared
recently, and which you may want to keep an eye out for in future.
Lighthouse keeper
WHERE: San Francisco Bay
If hobnobbing with the rich isn’t your
cup of tea, you could have taken up a
quiet but an alert life as the keeper of
a 144-year-old lighthouse overlooking
the Pacific Ocean. In January, the East
Brother Light Station perched on a tiny
island in the San Francisco Bay said it
needed new keepers from April. The pay?
$130,000 with the potential to earn more!
Tropical Island Escape
WHERE: Great Barrier Reef
Sun, Sea & Books
WHERE: The Maldives
If you secretly desire to spend all days
surrounded by books in a library,
why not run this bookshop at Soneva
Fushi, a luxury resort on a lush green
private island in The Maldives? The
pay, according to the owner, would
be “derisory but the fringe benefits
“unparalleled”. Oh and you will also
have to write a lively blog on the
arduous job you have!
Not Quite A Cat-astrophe
WHERE: Syros, Greece
Love cats? Can tolerate 55 of them?
Then maybe you should keep an eye
out the next time there’s a vacancy on
the ancient island of Syros around 78
nautical miles from Athens where you
would have to look after 55 cats in a
Seven more flights to Srinagar
for the summer tourist season
It will soon be easier to travel to
Srinagar, the summer capital of the
very picturesque state of Jammu and
Kashmir. The state sees a stream
of tourists in the summer season,
especially from northern India that
sees scorching summers every year.
Seven more flights on the Srinagar
route will be added to make it easy for
travellers, taking the total number of
daily flights to Srinagar to 38.
The airport facility at Srinagar sees
around 2.3 million passengers in a year,
mostly in the summers, and the move
will take the number further up. With
the planned flights in place, the local
economy that thrives on tourism is also
expected to see substantial gains. The
move is also expected to bring down the
rather steep airfares for the route.
As per an official’s statement from
the Airports Authority of India (AAI),
the seven new flights will comprise of
a Delhi-Srinagar flight by AirAsia and
three by Jet Airways. An Air India
flight has also been introduced on the
route. The move has come at the behest
of the Union Aviation Ministry, which
called for a meeting with various
airlines representatives, asking each to
ensure affordable flights to Srinagar.
A proposal of night flights has also
been made to ease the traffic on the
air route, and make it convenient for
tourists from all across the country. If
implemented, a dream trip to the very
stunning Kashmir will be easier than
ever before.
If you’re semi-retired or a young
couple looking to escape the rat race,
this might be for you. A community
on Bedarra Island, south of Cairns
in Australia, is looking for new
caretakers for seven holiday homes. It
was offering $450 for 15 hours of work a
week, along with a new cabin.
Manage Richard Branson’s
island
WHERE: The British Virgin Islands
sanctuary. In return, you get a salary
and free accommodation.
And the worst jobs are
According to surveys by a variety of
publications:
Crocodile trainer
Because who knows how that stint
might end.
Always wanted to live on a Caribbean
island and rub shoulders with the
rich and famous? Last year, Necker
Island, owned by billionaire Richard
Branson, was looking for a personal
assistant to work under the island’s
general manager. This is the same
tropical paradise where Barack Obama
holidayed with his family after his
retired as US president.
Crime scene cleaner
It could include homicides and
chemical spills
Guard at Buckingham Palace.
Cat food taster
You and your pet may not have the
same taste buds.
