SR&ED in the vineyard and winery
By Carla Elm, vice-president RSG
Did you know that scientific research and
experimental development (SR&ED) tax credits
are considered an entitlement by the Government
of Canada? As long as you’re able to prove the work you’ve
done in the vineyard or winery qualifies as SR&ED, you’re
entitled to tax credits or refunds.
Although the burden of proof lies with you, if your
corporate records are in order and the SR&ED-related
activities surrounding innovation have been recorded as
they happened, Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is ready to
reward you for your hard work.
Innovation implies failure. That’s fine, at least in terms
of SR&ED. Failure in attempts to advance knowledge in
your industry strongly indicates that scientific research or
experimental development took place.
Our job at RSG is to identify which activities qualify as
SR&ED, along with other related costs, such as payments
to contractors and wasted materials. We have been
identifying such reclaimable costs in Western Canada for
15 years and are aligned with a national SR&ED services
provider with over 60 resources.
Innovation can occur in both the vineyard and the
cellar, in both viticulture and oenology. Typical areas
of innovation that qualify as SR&ED involve those
projects attempted that did not work out as planned,
that cost more than anticipated, that hit a wall or kept
you up at night tying to figure out a solution when
you needed to innovate in a way that went beyond the
current technological or scientific standard practice.
Experimentation with drainage or irrigation, row spacing
or pruning, or grape vine support structures may qualify.
Experimentation with new varietals in the vineyard, or
innovative filtration, maturation, and bottling processes
in the winery may as well. RSG is ready to assist you in
determining the materiality of your SR&ED claim. It’s
what we do, all day every day, and we’re here to help.
Our business is boutique in that we cater to each client
in ways that make completing your claim streamlined
and efficient in order to maximize your return. We
understand the science of the vine and the cellar and
will advise you on what will ultimately result in a
boost to your bottom line. Let us help you claim your
entitlement through this most lucrative program: the
SR&ED program provides $3 billion to over 20,000
companies across the country every year. Now’s the time
to claim what’s yours. o
