“Twenty years ago we couldn’t
grow what we have now. We grow
Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir,
Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc,
which typically you could only grow
hybrids down in the valley 20 years
ago. Now with the warmer weather
and more heat units per season,
we are seeing we are able to ripen
those more traditional European
varieties very well down here as
well,” says Etsell, who adds that it’s a
combination of the warmer weather
and root stalks that are allowing
them to grow these different
varieties of wine.
In North America, often a European
variety of grape is grafted on top.
Etsell says that there’s been a lot
of research and a lot of different
types of root stalks and different
clones that work well in wet soil or
work better in sand, that pushes the
plant to ripen early. He says in the
past 20 years, there has been a lot
of research into the different types
of root stalks that help winemakers
grow in regions that wouldn’t
typically grow grapes.
“Once we started picking, everything
cooled down, which was good; there
wasn’t a massive spike in sugars,” says
Dumayne, adding that there was also
no disease pressure since there was

at Okanagan Crush Pad in
Summerland, B.C., says that he’s seen
the quality of wine improving as
people are doing more site selection
and research into site selection.
They did experience a fire near their
vineyard last summer, but he says
that for the amount of fruit they
process, it was a small block. They
started picking the fruit towards the
last week of August and were heavily
focused on their sparkling for their
Haywire brand. He says overall, the
growing season was a pretty dry
summer with the wildfires and it
wasn’t too hot.
