Another year, 

another harvest. 

2018 was ripe with wine production. 

Of course, there were a few 

obstacles along the way as well 

that proved to be a damper in the 

Canadian wine industry. 

In this issue of Crush magazine, the 

Canadian winery and management 

publication, we explore how 

the 2018 wildfires in B.C. could 

potentially affect this year’s 

harvest; will smoke taint transform 

the quality and taste of 2019 wines? 

And what about global warming? 

Wineries across the world have 

started to notice that they have 

gotten an increase in growing days, 

allowing the grapes to fully ripen 

earlier. 

We also take a look at some 

unconventional wines, such as 

orange wine and what makes it 

unique, as well as a winery in 

Ontario which make traditional 

wines in an untraditional way. Of 

course, let’s not forget the feature 

on Winnipeg’s only winery, which 

considering the climate of the 

prairies, is an interesting business 

venture to get into.

How global warming and wildfires have affected 

the growing of grapes in the B.C. wine region

The wildfires in B.C. made headlines 

last summer, but for B.C.’s wine 

industry, winemakers were concerned 

with how smoke taint could potentially affect 

their harvest this year. 

Smoke taint is a major concern for 

winemakers, and although the wildfires 

ravaged a lot of B.C. crops, it didn’t seem to 

affect the grapes too much for this year’s 

harvest. In fact, according to winemakers in 

the province, the harvest was a bit slow to 

begin with, thanks to global warming. 

“The harvest for this year was a bit slow 

starting in the spring, then it got really hot

and it was very, very dry,” says Bailey 

Williamson, winemaker and facilities 

maintenance for Blue Grouse Estate 

Winery in Duncan, B.C. “Climate 

change is definitely upon us and it’s 

obviously here. With an increase of 

growing days, we will be able to ripen 

fully what we are growing here.” 

Since Blue Grouse is located on 

Vancouver Island, they were removed 

from the wildfires. Williamson says 

that they did get some residual smoke 

from fires in Washington state, but 

says that timing is everything when it 

comes to smoke taint. 

“It all comes down to the intensity 

of the smoke and the timing of the 

ripening of the grapes. If the smoke 

intensity coincides with the softening 

of the grape and the accumulation of 

the sugar, that is the worst time. If 

the smoke happens early when they 

are hard marbles, nothing happens.” 

In the Southern Interior, wineries 

experienced a longer winter, but not 

a cold one. Graham Pierce, director 

of winemaking for Encore Vineyards, 

TIME Winery, Evolve Cellars, and the 

McWatters Collection, says that they 

were a little late out of the gate, but 

had one of the best Mays on record. 

He says that they didn’t experience 

too much smoke in Penticton, but the 

smoke they did get ended up slowing 

things down. Thankfully though, 

they didn’t see too much smoke taint 

in the wine, but it took a while longer 

for the ripening to occur. 

Originally from Vancouver, Pierce has 

been in the Okanagan for 22 years 

and says that he’s seen the scope 

of what they can ripen completely 

change in that time. 

“When I first got here it was a 

struggle to ripen some of the red

thanks to detailed weather records 

dating back hundreds of years. He 

says that across the board in almost 

all wine regions, the picking dates 

have gotten earlier and earlier every 

year and they are picking a lot of 

the fruit starting now in August. 

Andrew Etsell, winemaker and 

viticulturist at Singletree Winery in 

Abbotsford, says that their grapes 

haven’t been affected in terms of 

taste and flavours due to the fires, 

but it did prolong their season a 

little bit. Because the smoke filters 

sunlight, it did stall the grapes from 

ripening as quickly as they could 

have. Typically, their harvest begins 

the last week of August through to 

the end of October, but this year 

they started on September 11 and 

finished on November 11. 

Etsell also agrees that the Fraser 

Valley has seen different varieties

of grapes than what was previously 

seen in past years. 

“Twenty years ago we couldn’t 

grow what we have now. We grow 

Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, 

Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, 

which typically you could only grow 

hybrids down in the valley 20 years 

ago. Now with the warmer weather 

and more heat units per season, 

we are seeing we are able to ripen 

those more traditional European 

varieties very well down here as 

well,” says Etsell, who adds that it’s a 

combination of the warmer weather 

and root stalks that are allowing 

them to grow these different 

varieties of wine. 

In North America, often a European 

variety of grape is grafted on top. 

Etsell says that there’s been a lot 

of research and a lot of different 

types of root stalks and different 

clones that work well in wet soil or 

work better in sand, that pushes the 

plant to ripen early. He says in the 

past 20 years, there has been a lot 

of research into the different types 

of root stalks that help winemakers 

grow in regions that wouldn’t 

typically grow grapes. 

“Once we started picking, everything 

cooled down, which was good; there 

wasn’t a massive spike in sugars,” says 

Dumayne, adding that there was also 

no disease pressure since there was

Matthew Dumayne, chief winemaker

Summerland, B.C., says that he’s seen 

the quality of wine improving as 

people are doing more site selection 

and research into site selection. 

They did experience a fire near their 

vineyard last summer, but he says 

that for the amount of fruit they 

process, it was a small block. They 

started picking the fruit towards the 

last week of August and were heavily 

focused on their sparkling for their 

Haywire brand. He says overall, the 

growing season was a pretty dry 

summer with the wildfires and it 

wasn’t too hot.

USMCA agreement could mean the end 

of B.C. wines exclusively on store shelves 


A 

new international trade deal 

now means changes for B.C. 

wine on store shelves. 

On November 30, 2018, Canada, the 

United States, and Mexico signed the 

new United States-Mexico-Canada 

Agreement (USMCA) which is set to 

replace the former North American 

Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that 

has been in effect since 1994 (the 

agreement still has to go through 

the legislative process in Canada, 

the U.S., and Mexico). Among many 

changes to the new act, B.C. wine 

lovers will soon see an expanded 

selection of options from outside the 

province on store shelves. 

Under the USMCA, Canada has 

preserved holdovers from NAFTA, 

including Chapter 19, which allows 

for independent panels to resolve 

disputes involving companies 

and governments, and Chapter 

20, which is the government-togovernment 

dispute settlement 

mechanism. Canada has made 

concessions, including increasing 

the quota on foreign imports 

into its dairy market and other 

supply-managed sectors, allowing 

American farmers greater access to 

the Canadian market. 

So how does that affect the wine 

industry? B.C. will be required to 

eliminate its rule which allows 

only B.C. wines on grocery shelves 

(which was originally done in a side 

letter to the USMCA) by November 

1, 2019.

In the original NAFTA negotiation 

and agreement, in exchange for 

dropping tariffs and opening the 

Canadian market to U.S. wines, B.C.- 

only licences were grandfathered 

in to recognize the importance of 

supporting local B.C. wine. The 

British Columbia Wine Institute 

(BCWI) oversees the operation of, 

as a cooperative for all B.C. grape 

wineries, 21 similar licences allowing 

for all certified 100 per cent B.C. 

grape wines to be sampled and sold 

off site. 

The Washington State Liquor and 

Cannabis Board allows Washington 

wineries two additional locations 

off site for sampling and selling 

wine of their own production. B.C.’s 

provincial government has yet to 

issue individual B.C. winery offsite 

licences, which is where the 

BCWI ones come in. In April 2014, 

the B.C. government allowed the 

BCWI the option to move these 

licences to grocery store shelves 

to accommodate the growth of 

B.C. wineries and give them better 

access to consumers. To date, 18 

have done so, with three remaining 

independent, as per the BCWI. 

The recent USMCA ruling continues 

to recognize the provenance of 

grandfathered B.C.-only co-op 

industry licences. Miles Prodan, 

president and CEO of the BCWI, 

mentions that the B.C. government 

also allowed other liquor store 

licences to move into grocery, 

including import wine, spirits, 

etc.; though for social and health 

responsibilities, these were 

mandated to be store-within-store 

format (with access control, separate 

check-out, etc.). To date, no private 

liquor store or grocery has taken 

advantage of that opportunity. 

Under the new USMCA, B.C. will be required to 

eliminate its rule which allows only B.C. wines 

on grocery shelves.

There has been tremendous growth 

of U.S. wine sales in Canada under 

the Canada United States Federal 

Trade Agreement (CUSFTA) and 

NAFTA, and the U.S. wine sales value 

to Canada has grown by $485 million 

since 1988. The BCWI mentions that 

U.S. wine sales in Canada have grown 

by an average of 13 per cent every 

year for the past 28 years, resulting 

in more than doubling its wine sale 

market shares to 14.2 per cent. By 

comparison, Canadian premium 

bottled wine sales in the U.S. market 

have grown to $8.4 million and 

represents a negligible share of total 

wine sales in the United States. 

Canadian wine production volume 

is one-sixteenth the size of the U.S. 

industry. The province of B.C. said 

it plans to work with the federal 

government to resolve this issue 

in a manner that best protects the 

province’s wine industry. 

“B.C. worked closely with the 

federal government and agreed to 

amend the measures relating to 

wine in grocery stores. This policy 

has been controversial for some 

time,” said Premier John Horgan 

and Bruce Ralston, Minister of 

Jobs, Trade and Technology, in a 

statement on October 18, 2018. “We 

knew this was a problem that we 

were going to have to fix. We will 

continue to work with the Canadian 

government to resolve it in a 

manner that best protects our wine 

industry.” o

the bad boy in the Niagara 

region. 

The Jordan-based winery doesn’t 

have a sign nor a tasting room; 

they’re often called a natural winery, 

although they don’t call themselves 

that; they’ve been rejected by 

VQA standards for their Riesling 

every year except one; and they 

don’t believe in competing in wine 

competitions. You can’t buy their 

wines in stores, rather they only sell 

them in restaurants or direct order, 

but that doesn’t stop them from 

selling out every year. 

They’re like the Charlie Sheen of 

the wine industry; they do things 

their way and they don’t care what 

people think. And yet, people keep 

coming back for more. In fact, their 

restaurant, The Restaurant at Pearl 

Morissette, was recently named the 

number-one best new restaurant 

in Canada by Air Canada’s EnRoute 

magazine. But alas, this story isn’t 

about the food. It’s about the wine. 

Pearl Morissette – which got its 

name from its vigneron (French for a 

person who cultivates wine), Francois 

Morissette, and his business partner, 

Toronto real estate developer Mel 

Pearl Morissette officially got its start in 2006 when land was acquired in 

Jordan, Ont., about an hour away from Niagara Falls.

property around five kilometres from 

that location, which is where their 

base is located, and recently leased a 

third property this last year. 

The Jordan, Ontario-based winery 

doesn’t have a sign or a tasting room, 

and only offers their wines through 

direct sale or in restaurants. 

“The reason we brought the property 

here is because the soil is quite 

amazing,” says Francois Morissette, 

who originally hails from a French 

suburb in Montreal, but did his 

training in Burgundy, France. “I have 

the tendency to acquire or lease 

property as we just did now based 

on soil type and nothing else. And 

so, now we are owners of two of 

the most interesting types of soil in 

Niagara and we recently leased a 

vineyard this year on the third soil 

type that I was also very excited to 

start working with.” 

The wines Pearl Morissette produces 

are technically known as natural 

wines, but Morissette doesn’t 

like to call them that. They try to 

make them with as little outside 

interventions as possible. They take 

a traditional approach, which comes 

from old-world Europe, and try not to 

add anything more than grapes and a

“Because we made this at a very early 

stage, in 2010, it sort of flagged us 

for being weird, different, unique, 

and it’s had us not meeting VQA 

standards on a regular basis,” says 

Morissette, who adds that their 

Rieslings were one of the first wines 

that people noticed they made 

slightly differently, and of which 

they’ve gained a reputation for. “The 

wines are, of course, not flawed, but 

just different. Those wines are being 

appreciated in other places, like 

Germany for example.” 

The winery applies an oxidative winemaking approach, which is often seen in traditional 

winemaking. The practice exposes wines at an early phase in their life to oxygen so they are 

informed to the oxygen itself and build a resistance to it.

whole process. They call themselves 

traditional and artisanal, yielding 

wines that are more flowing. 

Their line-up of wines, of which they 

produce anywhere from 6,000 to 

8,000 cases annually depending on 

the vintages, include Chardonnay, 

Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, and 

Riesling, the latter of which is made 

unique for the region. Their Riesling, 

cheekily called Cuvee Black Ball 

thanks to it being rejected by the 

VQA standards every year but one, 

is made in a completely dry style, 

that is with no residual sugar. They 

bring in vessels from France, called 

Foudres, which are large oval-shaped 

barrels which they find to be the best 

suited to the textures of the grapes 

they grow in Niagara. 

Being different is part of the charm 

of Pearl Morissette; they do things 

differently and don’t try to emulate 

what has been made elsewhere in 

the world. In fact, when Morissette 

was first in discussions with Pearl on 

opening a winery, he was guaranteed 

to start the project on the basis of 

no compromise, which is essentially 

the message at the heart of the 

winery. Morissette says that they’ve 

always tried to elevate Jordan and 

the region to the international rank 

of wine production. They have an 

international focus into what they 

do. They of course make wine for

The vigneron says that early on they 

decided that they wouldn’t submit 

any wines to awards, as they don’t 

necessarily approve of being tasted in 

a flight of a hundred different wines. 

He believes that it doesn’t give every 

single wine tasted the proper context 

to express it at its fullest potential. 

“Especially today, with certain 

recipes or ingredients, you can 

fabricate certain wines or add things 

to certain wines that will then show 

very, very well upon opening. But, 

these wines wouldn’t consequently 

outcompete other wines that would 

be better made that would stand a 

chance to get their nose noticed in 

that context.”

Although the wines are a bit unique 

to the region, Morissette, who has 

been in the wine game since 1986, 

says that even after 12 vintages he 

still considers himself in the early 

stages of trying to understand what 

Niagara is. 

“Largely grape varieties are a vessel; 

a means to which to express a site, 

a region,” he says. “What is Niagara? 

What is Jordan? It’s complex to try to 

understand a region. It takes at least 

a couple generations and you have 

to get started somehow, so I have a 

very humble approach to the whole 

thing.” o

Just like they don’t follow the norm 

in regards to what other wineries 

are doing, they don’t follow wine 

movement fads either. Even the 

fact that they don’t call themselves 

natural winemakers leans to their 

pièce de résistance that they are 

different. They call their winemaking 

artisanal, a traditionally-informed 

process where they allow their 

wines to follow their course; with 

assistance that is, because otherwise 

Morissette says they will become 

vinegar if you let them. There is no 

recipe to their winemaking, instead 

they just follow the reading they 

have on a given grape type in a given 

year and assist it as it transforms 

into wine. In fact, Morissette 

says that they apply an oxidative 

winemaking approach, which is often 

seen in traditional winemaking. The 

practice exposes wines at an early 

phase in their life to oxygen so they 

are informed to the oxygen itself 

and build a resistance to it, meaning 

that they do not decay for a very long 

time after the bottle opens.

What is Orange wine? 

Orange wine, known in Ontario as Skin Fermented White, 

is unique not only for its colour and taste, but for the 

process in which it is made. Just as in red winemaking, 

white grapes see extended maceration and skin contact 

during fermentation. This gives the wine its orange colour 

and greater structure. 

Although we have produced our orange wine since 2014, 

the category was not officially recognized by the VQA until 

2017. Ann Sperling, director of winemaking at Southbrook, 

was instrumental in spearheading the proposal set forth to 

the VQA board for approval. This ultimately led to the new 

category of Skin Fermented White. 

Our Skin Fermented Vidal is exemplary of the ‘nothing 

added, nothing taken away’ philosophy at the root of 

natural winemaking. When making white wine, stems and 

grape skins are typically discarded before fermentation. 

When making our Skin Fermented Vidal, we utilize the 

entire grape. This process benefits the flavour and texture 

of the final product, making for a wine that is expressive 

of vidal’s hidden potential. The wine undergoes wild 

fermentation with no additives and remains unfiltered.

Small lots of vidal are hand harvested from our estate in 

the Four Mile Creek sub-appellation of Niagara-on-the- 

Lake. Eight-hundred kilograms were cluster sorted and 

foot-trodden, then fermented stems-and-all using only 

wild yeasts and a natural malolactic conversion over a

30-day period. The matrix of stems and gentle acting yeast 

convert natural grape sugars while infusing a novel array 

of flavours into this wine. After gentle pressing, the wine 

was naturally chilled outdoors, settled and bottled cloudy 

without additives of any kind. In addition, the wine does 

not contain sulphites as it already has the appropriate 

antioxidants from skins and stems.

expresses far beyond its typical bright, floral, and fruity 

character, shattering expectation. The 2017 vintage shows 

a distinct aroma of citrus and banana which gives way to 

white flowers and steeped black tea. On the palate, vibrant 

acidity balances the wine as it shows ripe green fruit and 

complex herbal and earthy flavours. 

Orange wines flavour profile are much more dependant 

on what foods you pair them with. Nice pairings include, 

but are not limited to, exotic spices and flavours of the 

Mediterranean, Spanish & Moroccan spices, or traditional 

pasta dishes, where we may have a chance to experience 

the wine’s bready, biscuit notes at their best. 

Although it wasn’t until recently that orange wines came 

to be popular, they have a rich and dynamic history that 

extends all the way back to the Egyptians 3150 BC. It is an 

exciting change from traditionally having to choose from

Growing a new 

industry in Manitoba 

Shrugging Doctor Beverage Company 

produces wine in an unexpected place

When it comes to wine in 

Canada, the first location 

that comes to mind is 

most likely not Winnipeg, Man. 

But, two born-and-raised Winnipeg 

entrepreneurs are hoping to change 

that. 

Shrugging Doctor Beverage Company 

is a Winnipeg-based winemaking 

company co-founded in 2016 by 

Willows Christopher and Zach 

Isaacs. It is focused on providing the 

most unique and versatile alcohol 

experience in the province made 

from locally grown produce. 

“It was a perfect storm of conditions,” 

says Christopher, when thinking 

about how it all began. “Looking back 

at the first iterations of the business 

plan, I cringe, I can’t believe I thought 

that would have ever worked. And 

when you’re 18 and you walk into a 

bank and say ‘I’ve never had a job 

before, I’ve never run a business, 

I have no credit history, I have no 

assets, and I want to start a business 

making wine’, it’s a little hard to get 

funding.” 

The duo started with only $50 of 

their own money, which they spent 

on homebrewing equipment. They 

ended up going to Futurpreneur, 

a non-profit, government-funded 

organization which funds small 

businesses and young entrepreneurs, 

and they were able to help them 

refine their business plan.

“It’s a competitive field in the world of 

wine,” says Christopher. “People aren’t 

taking Manitoba wine very seriously. 

But, 15 years ago people weren’t taking 

Canadian wine very seriously, and 

30 years before that, people weren’t 

taking North American wine very 

seriously, and now look at California. 

It’s hard, but we are happy to be here 

at the start, [and] hope we are laying 

the groundwork for everybody else.” o

particularly difficult hurdles to 

jump, but Christopher and Isaacs 

have spent the last three years 

determining just how to use these 

difficulties to their advantage. 

“I worked a lot on the recipes at first. 

Using local fruit wherever possible; 

we use raspberries, strawberries, 

rhubarb, and then Manitoba grapes,” 

says Isaacs. “The grapes have been 

specially engineered to be cold 

hearty, then we grow them in the 

Pembina Valley between the U.S. 

border and Winkler. The grapes we 

grow have a very unique taste, and 

you don’t get too many wines made 

from these grapes just because they 

don’t exist out there.” 

This year, Shrugging Doctor 

produced eight different types of 

wines, two types of mead, an apple 

cider, and a sangria. As the company 

grows, they plan to keep adding to 

their repertoire. 

In any new enterprise there are sure 

to be some pitfalls, but Christopher 

and Isaacs have found ways to make 

sure even their missteps don’t go to 

waste, recounting using a not quite 

right wine to make their first sangria.

often passing from one generation 

of vintners to the next. But what we 

are seeing in the new generation 

of wineries is anything but old 

school. From small-scale storage to 

full-production facilities with wine 

tasting rooms, retail space, and 

more, Okanagan wineries have come 

of age, and so have the designs and 

materials used to build them. 

As a multi-generation family 

business in B.C.’s Okanagan Valley,

are considered an entitlement by the Government

While the GLBC provides 

numerous services to its 

customers, one of the 

most comprehensive is the 

manufacturing of labels.

Launching its operation with 

only three employees, the 

Great Little Box Company 

Ltd. (GLBC) opened its doors in 

1982 with their 5,000-square-foot 

plant in Burnaby, British Columbia. 

With a focus on customer service 

and a talent for innovation and 

advancement, the GLBC was able 

to navigate the difficult economic 

environment of the 1980s and begin 

a long tradition of growth and 

expansion. 

As the company expanded through 

the years, more space was required. 

Since 1984, the company has moved 

six times, with the last bringing 

them to their current location on 

Mitchell Island, encompassing a 

250,000-square-foot facility. In 

conjunction with these moves, the 

GLBC opened additional sites in 

Victoria and Kelowna between 1992 

and 1998. The company even opened 

a sister company, the Everett Branch 

of the Great Little Box Company Inc. 

The GLBC now provides services to 

customers all across Canada. 

In addition to the head office 

expansions, GLBC expanded into 

other markets in the region through 

the opening of three sales and

“There is nothing worse than taking

capabilities,” says Hollis. That is why 

the GLBC has invested in machinery 

that can handle a wide range of 

today's concepts and designs. They 

have taken the best of both worlds by 

printing labels digitally and having 

full decorative finishing capabilities. 

These days, every printer has a digital 

press, but what defines the GLBC in 

this industry is their focus on the 

finishings. ”We have the ability to 

hot-stamp multiple foils, emboss, 

cold foil, coat, and spot varnish all in 

single pass.” 

When it comes to sustainability, the 

GLBC is at the forefront of their field. 

By digitally printing labels, they are 

able to lower their environmental 

footprint. The power consumption is 

approximately 25 per cent lower than 

traditional offset label press as they 

don’t need to run high-powered UV 

curing lights. More importantly, the 

set-up material waste is substantially 

lowered and there is no need to 

register and mount costly print 

plates. 

Hollis says that one of the greatest 

challenges in the wine industry is 

delivering labels on time, since there 

can be a very small window to label 

the bottles. 

“Many wineries do not have their 

own filling and labeling equipment. 

They will bring in a mobile bottling 

company and these company’s 

schedules fill up fast, therefore, 

missing the appointment is not an 

option,” says Hollis. “We are proud of 

our on-time delivery. This is tracked 

and followed very closely throughout 

our company.” 

The GLBC has its eye on the future, 

and is very excited by some of the new 

and amazing things happening in the 

industry. 

“My personal favourite is augmented 

reality,” says Hollis. ”This allows you 

to take your smartphone, hold it up 

to the label and the image will come 

to life. A great example if this is the 

Walking Dead Wines or 19 Crimes. If 

you have not yet seen this technology, 

you will very soon. The ability to run 

variable print is also something that 

is very interesting and is gaining 

momentum, however, this process can 

only be done digitally. For example, 

we can run one varietal with multiple 

variations in a single print run.”

Grapes are one of many fruits that can tolerate 

frigid temperatures, but vineyard managers 

will need to work diligently to protect plants 

from harsh winter weather and visitation from wildlife. 

Below are winter gardening tips for vineyard owners to 

consider this winter in preparation for spring growing and 

winemaking. 

Think of prunes this winter 

No, grape producers will not be eating prunes this winter, 

but, they will need to prune back grape vines to avoid 

cold damage and plant diseases. Some grape varieties can 

withstand temperatures as low as -35 degrees Fahrenheit; 

however, if growers neglect 

pruning plants, 

they may see 

damage 

to the woody trunk of the plant or dead vines that 

will not produce buds in spring. For frost protection, 

vineyard operators should mound one foot of soil around 

grapevines in February to help insulate plants. 

Wildlife movement concerns 

In the winter, white-tailed deer face multiple challenges. 

For one, they need to find food when natural resources 

are scarce, and for another, hunters are trying to find 

them to satisfy their own cravings. Therefore, deer will 

walk onto landscapes in the early morning and evening 

hours to brave chilly wind gusts and avoid being seen by 

people. Since deer mating season occurred in November 

and December, vineyard managers will see more deer 

on properties and will need to act on deer management 

strategies to prevent damage to vineyards. 

While there are many types of 

fences on the market, the best 

fence for protecting vineyards 

from wildlife damage is made 

from either polypropylene or a 

PVC-coated metal.

In case white-tailed deer were not problematic enough, 

vineyard operators will also see an increase of coyotes 

on landscapes, as they breed until March, and even bear 

movement. 

Vineyard managers can try different tactics for ridding 

wild animals from landscapes. Since the average vineyard 

size is approximately 49 acres, grape growers may try to 

find the cheapest strategy for keeping wildlife off their 

landscapes. Cheaper alternatives for deer resistance 

include applying deer repellents around vineyards and 

planting deer-resistant flowers. The problem with deer 

repellents are that the liquid or granular formulas wash 

away after heavy rain and snow. They may only last for 

30 days, making them a constant reminder to vineyard 

managers to re-apply around large acres of land. Chemical 

odour repellents may be harmful (toxic) to both humans 

and pets. And, deer-resistant plants such as marigolds 

and daffodils, grow in spring, but that does not leave 

protection in the winter season. 

Deer fencing for vineyard protection 

A low-maintenance alternative for deer resistance is 

deer fencing. While there are many types of fences on 

the market, the best fence for protecting vineyards from 

wildlife damage is made from either polypropylene or a 

PVC-coated metal. The fence mesh chosen for vineyard 

protection depends on the amount of wildlife traffic 

travelling to landscapes and the type of wildlife. 

Most poly deer fences have a certified breaking strength 

between 650 and 1,400 pounds, and a life expectancy 

up to 20 years. This type of fence material works best 

against light-to-moderate deer populations but not against 

chewing animals. 

Metal Deer Fences keep out chewing animals, such as 

coyotes, wolves, and small critters thanks to a tough steel 

core and PVC-coating. The life expectancy of steel deer 

fences is between 20 to 30 years and appear virtually 

invisible from a short distance. 

Summary 

Winter is tough times for wildlife, as they travel far and 

wide for food only to find little. Tougher times arise for 

vineyard managers as wildlife approach landscapes to 

eat and breeding seasons goes into full swing. To get 

through winter struggles, growers will need to prune back 

grape vines and start thinking about deer management 

strategies to prepare them for spring winemaking. o

Bird damage is a real issue for many growers. You 

invest time, money, and energy throughout the 

year trying to grow the perfect crop, only to see 

all that work go for naught when birds flock in at the 

eleventh hour to rob you of your riches. This is not an old 

story. It has been dealt with for many generations with 

all sorts of techniques: scarecrows, shotguns, cannons, 

balloons, netting, reflective tape, and even screeching 

sound machines of birds in distress. These all work to 

some extent, and often the best result is to implement a 

combination of methods as the season develops. 

Bird Control Group has developed an innovative 

commercial-grade laser that is proving to be quite 

effective. Operating out of their North American office in 

Portland, Oregon, Bird Control Group offers a commercial 

robotic laser called the Autonomic. This laser can be 

programmed to run up to 16 different programs, each 

running through a series of up to 100 waypoints. 

An early believer of these lasers in Canada was Coral 

Beach Farms, who tried the technology to protect their 

cherry orchards along the shores of Okanagan Lake. 

Vineyard owners in Washington, Oregon, California, 

and New York also tried this technology during the 

2018 season. Positive feedback continues to be shared 

by vineyard owners, with many returning to purchase 

additional equipment as these lasers provide a neighbourfriendly 

and surprisingly very effective alternative to 

netting.

Why do the lasers work so well? The bird’s eyes work 

differently than human eyes. They see the full beam of 

light, just like we do if the laser was operating in fog or 

shining through smoke. So, for the bird, it’s perceived as a 

physical threat coming towards them as it moves through 

the field. It doesn’t mean you won’t see bird activity in the 

area, or that you might not still want to consider other 

measures to complement the lasers. They’re not a silver 

bullet offering complete control. But they do work very 

well with many growers sharing results of up to 90 per 

cent reduction in bird numbers. Similar to netting in a 

way, without the extra expense and labour. 

One trend continues to be shared by vineyard growers 

who have used these lasers, and that is that multiple 

lasers in a field works better than just one. They 

complement each other and the amount of acreage 

you can cover per laser increases with more lasers in 

operation. A single Autonomic laser in open terrain 

normally has an effective coverage area of eight-to-15 

acres in most vineyard applications. If your property 

has lots of undulations, you will likely need to consider 

additional lasers or other measures, such as netting small 

sections. Some growers have experienced higher acreage 

coverage than this, but keep in mind the more often the
