MATTHEW FIELD
The DA has hit out at Buffalo City
Metro for failing to discuss their
motion to close the EL Zoo (Call to
close zoo, March 7) at March’s
council meeting.
DA councillor Annette Rademeyer
said BCM council speaker Skuta
Alfred Mtsi kept “dodging the issue”
despite numerous requests for the
motion to be discussed.
“No attempt was made to discuss
the motion or provide answers to the
q u e st i o n s , ” Rademeyer said.
“The animals which are imprisoned
in [the EL Zoo] have to languish
under inhumane conditions with no
positive changes made to their living
conditions and no tangible
environmental enrichment provided
to them.”
The motion proposed four actions:
ýThe acknowledgement by the
municipality that it cannot afford to
maintain the zoo
ýAll zoo animals that can be
relocated are transferred to an
approved sanctuary
ýAnimals which are old, infirm or
psychologically impaired are
humanely euthanised
ýThe zoo is closed within six
months and is reopened as a
botanical garden
When asked for comment, BCM
spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya
said they were unable to comment
on matters brought before the
council.
However, in March, BCM released
a statement rebuffing a number of
complaints laid against the EL Zoo.
In the statement, Ngwenya said
that contrary to popular opinion, the
jaguar enclosure was not inadequate
“in terms of compromising its health”
but did say there were plans in place
to enlarge it.
Ngwenya also said the brown bear
was in good health, and for its age,
was of adequate size and standard.
Hikes spell double trouble for SA
MATTHEW FIELD
In what is sure to be a
devastating double whammy
for many, the cost of
electricity and fuel were
hiked up dramatically within
days of one another.
The National Energy
Regulator of South Africa
(Nersa) recently approved
E s ko m ’s request to raise
electricity tariffs for the
period of April 1 2019 to
March 31 2020.
Under the new tariffs,
direct customers will pay an
additional 13.87% while
municipalities will begin
paying 15.63% more from
July 1 onwards.
In addition to this tariff
hike, fuel prices were also
raised on Wednesday by more
than R1 for all fuel types.
According to the
Automobile Association (AA),
the new prices for all grades
of fuel are now as follows:
ýUnleaded 93 is now
R15.53 – an increase of
R1.29;
This dramatic price
an extended period of
have cost the country billions
Winter chills moving in
Winter is definitely on its way this
weekend and the trend is set to
continue from last week.
Thursday starts off cool but
pleasant with a maximum
temperature of 22°C. Overcast
skies foreshadow (pun not
intended) the rain still to come
and, thankfully, the wind is
expected to be a mild
south-westerly blowing through at
14km/h.
Temperatures drop to 19°C on
Friday, while rain is also expected.
Winds remain a steady 14km/h,
switching slightly to the south.
The rain doesn’t last long,
however, and by Saturday will
have dried up. Some cloud
remains and the temperature
climbs to 21°C. However, the wind
is now coming from the north
east and will be blowing through
at 22km/h.
Sunday will be the warmest day
of the weekend but not by much.
The maximum temperature peaks
at 23°C while a little cloud is
expected to stay overhead.
If you're making any plans,
however, keep in mind that winds
are predicted to peak at 25km/h.

Shoprite gives food gardens a chance
MATTHEW FIELD
The Shoprite Group will host their
fourth Market Day in East London
on Thursday April 4 at Checkers
Nahoon on Old Transkei Road.
The Market Day forms part of a
larger project aimed at combating
hunger, by partnering with more
than 70 small-scale food gardens
around the country.
Shoprite Group has also
partnered with non-profit
organisation Food & Trees for
Africa in order to provide training,
gardening equipment and
seedlings over an 18-month
period.
In 2019, Dimbaza-based Star
Uplifting Centre will take part for
the first time, selling their produce
to local residents.
All proceeds of the day go to the
centre. “Market Day enables
community food gardens to
promote themselves to a broader
customer base and sell their
excess crops.
“It provides them with some
much-needed extra income and
also helps boost their
independence which – in turn –
leads to greater sustainability,”
Shoprite Group PR manager
Abigail Calata said.
Food & Trees programme
manager Robyn Hills said the
market day provided food gardens
with an important opportunity to
improve their marketing and
business skills.
“Some of them have commercial
ambitions and this kind of
exposure opens their minds to the
great opportunities out there,”
Hills said.
The temperature drops on Friday to 18°C
and is expected to be accompanied by rain
throughout the day. Also expect an increase
in the wind speed from the south-east of
18km/h. Temperatures will climb to 21°C on
Saturday and it is predicted the rain will
dissipate by Friday.
But don’t be comfortable for too long as
the wind will be howling from the north-east
at 25km/h.
Sunday sees temperatures peak at a
pleasant 24°C, while few remaining clouds
should have blown through by Thursday
evening. However, it will still be blustery with
wind speeds expected to remain at 25km/h.
recently. Drop-offs can be made at Buffalo
SIVENATHI GOSA
The Cape Town Comedy Invasion
will tickle the funny bones of East
London audiences at the
Hemingways Casino on Saturday
April 6.
From the producers of The Big 5
Comedy Show, Taylor Made
Productions brings you their
newest comedy concept which
promises a line-up of non-stop
laughter as comedians Staurt
Taylor, Rob van Vuuren and Kagiso
Mokgadi bring their comedic touch
to the silly, the surreal, the naughty
and the nice.
Taylor said he realised he was
good at comedy when he took a
gap year in 1999.
“The plan was to just try this
comedy thing for a bit before I
went and studied further. I guess
the universe thought the world
needed more comics than
zo o l o g i st s , ” he said.
Taylor's material is mainly
focused on his own life.
“I tell stories in detail and those
tiny details are often what we all
have in common,” Taylor said.
Van Vuuren is a former
Lilyfontein pupil.
“I was pretty much always the
class clown and I loved the thrill of
getting my classmates to laugh.
“The idea of becoming a standup
comedian didn’t seem like an
option. I knew that I wanted to be a
performer though and it was after
years of being an actor and only
after the success of Corne and
Twakkie and The Most Amazing
Show did I begin to gain access to
the stand-up comedy circuit and
start to see it as a viable career
path for me,” said Van Vuuren.
Mokgadi said he liked to talk
about things that were happening
at the moment.
“Sometimes it's happening in my
life. If there's one thing about
South Africa it’s that we might run
out of water, electricity or
sometimes both but we will always
have comedy material. South
Africa is the gift that keeps on
giving,” Mokgadi said.
“We ’ve got a show with three
different styles of comedy and we
are planning an assault on your
tummy muscles! It’s like therapy -
you’ll leave feeling amazing,”
concluded Taylor.
Tickets will sell at R150 per
person and are available from
CompuTicket. The show starts at
8pm.
Motoring fans roar to the aid of SPCA
AMANDA NANO
Modified cars and
chest-thumping sounds were on
display at the inaugural SPCA
Park Off held at the Hamilton
Sports Club in Selborne, East
London last S at u r d ay.
Low suspension, exquisite
rims and some classic cars
were on display as motor lovers
came to admire them while
contributing to a good cause.
Hosted by Captured Stance
Crew (CSC), this nine-man crew
of animal lovers wanted to give
back to the community in the
way they best knew how – with
cars.
“We decided to do a charity
event where all the money
raised will go to the SPCA.
We ’ve also asked that
attendees bring animal food,”
said CSC chair Kyle Pridgeon.
CSC had three months to
prepare for the event.
“We ’re happy about the
turnout, and this couldn’t have
happened without the crew
pulling together, as well as our
sponsors,” Pridgeon said.
East London SPCA fundraiser
Margaret Pautz said they
appreciated CSC’s efforts to
help the organisation.
“I’m really impressed and
grateful for what they’ve done
for us, and to be able to pull off
such a successful event. We
will be doing an official
handover at the weekend,”
Pautz said.
Guitar Legends, featuring
Nathan Smith, will perform on
April 26 at the Guild Theatre in
support of the SPCA.
Tickets are available via
Pensioners get
out and about
AMANDA NANO
In pursuit of healthy bodies and
minds, members of the E a st
London Pensioners Association
took part in a fun walk last
Friday, from Gompo Library to
the Buffalo Flats police station.
Established in 2018, the group
consists of former professional
e d u c at o r s .
The association’s deputy
chairperson, Nomatemba
Twetwa, said the main aim of the
walk was to show that “there’s
life beyond the classroom” and
helping to build communities.
“Something like this means
you come back refreshed and
are able to think outside of the
box.
“Even those who were not able
to cover the distance because of
health issues were still involved
in the day,” Twetwa said. “We
need to create close
relationships, unity and get to
know each other’s strengths, as
well as motivate each other.
“The association is also in
need of more male members as
we have about four currently,”
she said.
Anyone interested in joining
the association can contact
Nomatemba on 076-880-0183.
EASTER FUN: Young entrepreneur Alyx Currin of I-Candi Creations held an Easter Workshop on Friday
at Madison’s Market in Stirling, East London for an enthusiastic, creative bunch of children. Easter
egg-shaped biscuits and bags were provided for the Easter hunt. A patient teacher, Alyx, decided on
what crafts could be done as well as demonstrations. I-Candi currently rents a shelf at the market with
rainbow glycerine soap, strawberry lip gloss, scrunchies, Easter gifts and stainless steel straws on
display. Alyx will now be selling reversible sequins pencil bags. ‘1 love creating and doing workshops
to help organisations in need.
The GO! & Express reported (“Foundation's kind
gesture to needy”, July 19 2018) that Rising Sun’s
goal is to improve the lives of the needy and
vulnerable so their circumstances do not hinder
their chances to succeed in life.
East London co-ordinator Lutho Jambela said
the main things they are in need of are tinned
foods, sanitary pads and clothing.
“Every second month, we have a sanitary pad
drive where we stand outside Amalinda Shoprite
with boxes so people can donate the sanitary
towels,” Jambela said.
“We are also trying to find some mentors for
grade 12 pupils who will be leaving high school,”
April 4, 2019
Real men ending Bonnie
and Clyde’s cult spree
MATTHEW FIELD
In 1934, Bonnie Elizabeth
Parker and Clyde
Chestnut Barrow died in a
hail of bullets, signalling
the dramatic end of two
of the most iconic
gangsters in history.
In 1967, Arther Penn
directed an equally iconic
film based on their crime
spree.
Now in 2019, Netflix has
premiered an original
movie that examines an
often unexplored aspect
of the story: The
policemen who caught
them.
The Highwaymen st a r s
Kevin Costner and Woody
Harrelson as Frank Hamer
and Maney Gault
respectively, the two
Texas rangers who were
hired by then Texas
governor Miriam “Ma”
Ferguson to track down
and capture Bonnie and
Clyde following their
escape from Eastham
Prison Farm.
While past films, such
as 1987’s The
Untouchables, have
explored the real-life
heroes who helped take
down some of the most
notorious names in
organised crime, these
films tended to play up
the action elements for
entertainment which,
while fun to watch, leave
one feeling like they’re
watching an action movie
rather than a real-life
drama.
In contrast, The
H i g h way m e n is a real
slow burner, focusing on
the behind-the-scenes
investigation and drama
than gun fights and mob
wa r s .
One of the best parts of
the film for me was the
exploration of the massive
fa n following Bonnie and
Clyde received at the
time. Thanks to their
glamorisation in the US
mainstream press, the
crime duo were often
treated like rockstars by
the public.
There's this funny scene
where Hamer and Gault
are prevented from
apprehending the pair
because hundreds of
people flock around their
car, hoping to get an
autograph. It's quite
surreal and shows just
how much society is
willing to ignore in the
name of hero worship.
Admittedly, the plot
does slow to a crawl in
the second act and the
slower pace might put off
some who are looking for
a more exciting gangster
flick, such as The
Untouchables or even
2009’s Public Enemies.
However, for those
looking for a different
perspective on this
historic period, one that
looks at the
often-overlooked and
under-appreciated good
guys for a change, then
The Highwaymen is
definitely worth a watch.
MATTHEW FIELD
Internationally acclaimed and SAMA-winning artist
Guy Buttery will be performing at Legends
Showcase on Friday April 12, as part of his
“Intramural Encounters” t o u r.
This tour marks his first nationwide solo tour of
SA in more than four years.
Since his debut album When I Grow Up in 2002,
Buttery has received numerous awards for his
music.
His debut album was nominated in the B e st
Instrumental and Best Newcomer categories at the
2002 SAMAs, which made Buttery the youngest
nominee in the awards’ histor y.
He won his first SAMA in 2010 for his album Fo x
Hill Lane and won another in 2014 for his live
album Live in KwaZulu.
He also received the National Arts Festival’s
Ovation Award three times– in 2010, ‘12 and ‘14.
Buttery has performed with numerous musical
acts throughout his career including the Odeion
String Quartet, the Eastern Cape Philharmonic
Orchestra, the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, and
Indian sistar player Kanada Narahari.
For “Intramural Encounters”, however, Buttery
will be going solo.
“There is something so intimate and humanistic
about a solo show. One singular exchange of
energy between performer and audience always
sheds a new light on the music. Each performance
offers up an inward gaze of self, hopefully for both
the listener as well as myself acting as some form
of catalyst in this process,” Buttery said.
Tickets will be R100 per person.
DRYING UP: Bridle Drift Dam dropped to 40.4% capacity last week due to poor rainfall
SUPPLIED
Drop in BCM dam
levels continues
MATTHEW FIELD
The department of water and
sanitation is calling on Buffalo
City Metro residents to use water
sparingly as dam levels continue
to drop due to insufficient rainfall.
Overall, the Eastern Cape saw
a drop in dam levels from 62.1%
to 61.9% last week.
With the exception of Nahoon
Dam, all dams in the BCM area
saw a decrease in levels.
Bridle Drift dropped to 40.4%,
Xilinxa to 21.7% and the
Rooikrantz Dam is now at 49.1%.
In contrast, Nahoon Dam rose
to 81.3% capacity.
The lack of rain and
subsequent drop in dam levels
comes in the midst of one of the
worst droughts ever recorded in
the Eastern Cape province, with
rainfall at 100-year lows.
Some areas are even
preparing for their own Day Zero,
where water is expected to dry
up completely.
Those living in rural and
Picture:
impoverished areas have been
hit the hardest. Farmers have
reported losing crops and
livestock to the drought which
has crippled them financially.
As man-made climate change
continues unabated, droughts
such as the one affecting the
province, are only expected to
get worse.
The rise in global temperatures,
combined with ever-decreasing
precipitation, mean that droughts
will not only increase in
frequency but also in intensity.
Tough battle for consumer
Load-shedding may be over – fo r
now – but it seems our problems
might have only just begun.
As reported on Page 2 of this
week’s GO! & Express, the price
of petrol and electricity have
risen steeply, with
petrol increasing by
more than R1/l and
electricity tariffs
going up over 15%.
What makes this
sting even more
intense, is the fact
that it comes so
soon after the worst
bout of
load-shedding in recent memory.
With the general elections
closing in (May 8), our
government really didn’t need to
give people another big reason
to hate them some more.
Of course, the worst of all this,
is that the people who end up
hurting the most from these
price increases are those who
could barely afford it in the first
place. I wrote about the same
problem during last year’s raft of
petrol price increases (“The poor
just get poorer,” October 11,
2018).
There’s no getting around the
fact, that I am one of the more
fortunate in SA at the moment.
Not only was I fortunate to be
born into a situation where I was
advantaged but also the face I
was born into a middle-class
family with access to decent
housing, healthcare, education,
and job
oppor tunities.
While I technically
am working class, I
regard myself as one
of the wealthier
members of society,
in comparison to
others who do not
have the same
a d va n t a g e s .
Yes, these tariff hikes are
hurting my wallet somewhat, but
it’s not the end of the world.
For millions of other South
Africans, however, this is not the
case. The people who end up
suffering the most when the
prices of essential goods go up,
are always the poor and
disenfranchised.
Let’s start with petrol. As I
said in my original article, the
majority of poor and
working-class people live far
from the country’s economic
hubs due to the mass
relocations under the apartheid
regime. This means that they are
forced to travel long distances to
and from work, either in their
own vehicle or via taxi.
Thanks to the petrol price
hike, these trips – which they
have to make in order to earn a
living – will eat even more into a
budget that has already been
stretched, which means less
money is available for other
necessities.
As for electricity, it’s pretty
much the same. People need
electricity to power important
appliances like fridges, stoves,
and geysers, so any increase in
tariffs hits them hard. As with
petrol, the rise in the electricity
price means that those who are
already in a financially
precarious position have to find
a way to make stretch their
incomes.
Add to the fact that wages
have been stagnant, it looks like
things are going to get a whole
lot worse before they get any
better, if they do get better.
It’s true that the government is
deep in debt, thanks in no small
part to the nine lost years of
Zuma, but squeezing the poor
and working class harder, is not
going to do much to help. All
that will come of this, is even
more suffering and growing
resentment.
Distinguished and well-known
law firm Yazbeks Attorneys –
established in 1939 by the late
Joseph Anthony Yazbek and
then later passed on to his son,
the late Mark Anthony Yazbek
– has changed its name and
moved to new premises.
Current owner and director
Neshal Singh was in fact the
only erstwhile partner of Mark
Yazbek at the time of his death
in June 2017.
The firm has now moved
from 24 Gladstone Street in the
East London CBD to safer, more
suitable premises in Bonza Bay
Road in Beacon Bay.
It will be trading under the
name and style of Singh &
Associates forthwith.
Singh was born and
educated in KwaZulu-Natal. He
graduated at the then
University of Durban-Westville
(now the University of
KwaZulu-Natal) with a BCom
degree.
Singh moved to East London
in 1995 and joined the firm
Yazbeks (JA Yazbek & Co) as it
was known then).
As a 22-year-old graduate,
he quickly established himself
and has been with the firm
ever since. He worked as an
accountant, financial manager
and thereafter pursued a LLB
degree.
Soon thereafter he wrote his
board exams and was admitted
as an Attorney of the High
Court in Makhanda (formerly
G r a h a m st o w n ) .
Having served his articles
with Mark Yazbek and coming
from a strong commerce and
legal background, Singh has
been practising as an attorney
specialising in commercial law,
investment practice, property
law, debt collection and the
administration of estates.
Singh is also a keen
entrepreneur, property investor
and property developer.
Further, as an advocate of
community service, he has
served on the board of the
Association for the
Rehabilitation of Persons with
Disability (Rehab) as a
management treasurer for a
period of four years.
Singh is happily married with
two teenage daughters.In his
leisure time, he is keen on
gardening, landscaping and a
bit of fishing.
He enjoys motoring
journalism, stand-up comedy
and music.
He is also a keen traveller,
having visited many parts of
the world.
At the practice, he is joined
by two professional assistants:
Lanese Jonas (LLB) and Kanya
Ntando (LLB).
Together, Lanese and Kanya
have expertise in family law,
labour law, civil and criminal
litigation and debt collection.
Further, he is supported by
several of the prevailing staff
members of Yazbeks, all of
whom have been within the
firm for many years with
different levels of expertise.
The firm is on the panel of
major banks and 100% BEEE
compliant.
Taking the reins where Mark
Yazbek left off, Singh continues
to service the greater East
London community with legal
expertise and assistance.
Singh continues the practice
that was left to him by his
lifelong mentor, friend and
erstwhile partner, but considers
it is time to create his own
legacy, guided by friend and
colleague advocate Barry Roux.
Therefore Singh decided to
use his own name in naming
the practice going forward.
All existing and future clients
are to kindly note that Singh &
Associates are the same firm,
with several of the previously
existing staff complement and
continues to provide the same
service and expertise that has
been servicing the greater East
London and Border areas for
the past 80 years.
Our telephone numbers and
postal details also remain the
same.
Singh & Associates will
appreciate your continued and
valued support and
instructions going into the
future and assure you of their
continued pledge and
commitment to provide the
same quality service into the
foreseeable future.
ATTORNEYS, ADMINISTRATORS OF ESTATES
(PREVIOUSLY KNOWN AS)
YAZBEKS ATTORNEYS
I would like to pay tribute to the
custodians of the Guild Theatre
for bringing Richard Shelton’s
show Sinatra and Me to East
London.
It was an absolute delight for
about 400 “golden oldies” l i ke
me, who packed the theatre to
watch Shelton bring Frank
Sinatra back to life with passion,
charm and so much charisma, in
his one-man show.
He was backed by a slick,
seven-piece orchestra
comprising home-grown
musicians, whose arrangements
complimented Shelton’s
rendition of “Ole Blue Eyes’s”
songs that will forever be
associated with the great
Sinatra, who would have been
102 if he was still alive.
Shelton’s resemblance to
Sinatra is uncanny and, believe
me, all you had to do was close
REFLECTIONS
... with Charles Beningfield
your eyes and you would have
sworn it was the real deal.
Those in attendance, who
formed a sea of white heads
from where I was sitting, would
have remembered Sinatra in his
prime. Those were times when
you couldn’t go to a party
anywhere without hearing
Sinatra belting out My Way, or
softly crooning an intimate
rendition of My Foolish Heart,
both of which Shelton delivered
beautifully on that lovely
nostalgic evening which evoked
so many happy memories.
Okay, for some the cost of
tickets may have been pretty
steep, which back in the day
would have paid the rent for
seven-and-a-half months for our
old house in St George’s Road!
But hey, it was worth every
p e n n y.
And speaking of yesteryear,
many of those who attended
Shelton’s show would remember
a time, nearly 50 years ago now,
when we were young and fancy
-free and visited the old
Colosseum Theatre in Caxton
Street, where visiting artists
would regularly play East London
to full houses.
Max Bygraves, Eartha Kitt,
Patti Page, Trini Lopez, Engelbert
Humperdinck, Frankie Laine and
Matt Monro come to mind.
Remember them?
Most of these talented men
and women have alas since
passed on but, thankfully, their
voices are preserved forever on
devices such as compact discs.
News that will
perk you up
ALAN HAWKINS
The modern consumer is faced with
food information overload, much of
which is about what is making us fat,
is unhealthy – and driving us to early
g r av e s .
Coffee lovers can now breathe a
sigh of relief after modern scientific
studies have proven that our
favourite brew is actually good for
us! Coffee is the world’s most
popular beverage and, in addition to
healthy nutrients such as vitamins
B2, B3 and B5, coffee contains high
levels of anti-oxidants and can
protect us from some serious
diseases.
Three different studies, the latest
published in Medical News Today
suggest that, in addition to
increasing energy levels and
improving performance, coffee helps
you burn fat. Many gym-goers and
sportsmen know that caffeine is a
common ingredient in many energy
supplements and coffee offers this in
its natural unadulterated form.
The study goes on to say that
coffee drinkers enjoy a lower
probability of getting Type 2
diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease,
dementia and Parkinson’s.
The studies also refer to preventing
cirrhosis of the liver, certain types of
cancer and suggest coffee acts as a
mild anti-depressant.
I don’t think this means we can go
and overindulge in coffee or anything
else for that matter, but I do feel a lot
more comfortable knowing that my
coffee fix is doing me some good.
I am no dietician but remind you
that we’re discussing pure coffee
here, coffee with no other additives,
including but not restricted to sugar,
artificial sweeteners and milk.
Suzuki Ertiga ‘extends’ legacy
Longer, wider seven-seater caters
for children and adults with ease
Suzuki’s new Ertiga is
ready for everything
that a busy family or
active business can
throw at it.
The secondgeneration
Suzuki
Ertiga arrived at dealers
in March 2019 to a
different world than its
f i r st - g e n e r at i o n
predecessor, which was
launched globally in
2010.
Extended families are
now more common,
mobile phone
integration is a given
and good ground
clearance is a
requirement.
The new Suzuki
Ertiga is visibly longer
and wider than its
predecessor, and
designers have
amplified these features
with an imposing new
front design and stylish
rear lights.
The sheet metal is
significantly more
sculpted than before.
The bonnet is raised
and creates horizontal
creases that flow to a
wide shoulder on either
side that runs to the
large rear light clusters.
Lower down, Suzuki
designers have added
deep convex lines that
run almost the length of
the vehicle.
At the rear of the
Ertiga, the designers
have mimicked the
upright front grille with
a slightly slanted
upright section on the
rear tailgate, directly
above the number plate
holder. The rear lights
reach towards the roof
and contain LED
MPV, Suzuki has
stretched the Ertiga by
130mm to 4,395mm,
while lifting the roof by
5mm to give the vehicle
a total height of
1,690mm.
The Ertiga is also
40mm wider, which
translates almost
directly into more
shoulder room for
passengers in all three
rows of seats.
Despite the extra
length and width,
Suzuki has invested significant
engineering time into making the cabin of
the Ertiga a more comfortable place than
b e fo re .
c o m b i n at i o n
brake-and-driving lights.
Lastly, the designers
have added a darkened
section to the C-pillar
similar to that of the
all-new Suzuki Swift,
which creates the
impression of a floating
r o of.
They have also added
an integrated high-level
brake light in the
luggage door.
To create a truly
practical seven-seat
Suzuki has kept the
wheelbase unchanged
at 2.740mm, which
means that the new
Ertiga shares the
nimble turning circle of
5.2m with its
p r e d e c e s s o r.
The dark cloth seats
are both more
supportive and roomier
and the second and
third row of seats can
fold flat to create flat
storage of up to 2.820m
with the front
passenger seat also
folded flat.
With the seats up, the
luggage compartment
offers 199L of storage
space, with a load floor
that can adjust to two
different heights. With
the seats down, the
load space is more hard
wearing and sturdier
than before, thanks to
metal plates in all the
folding seatbacks.
“We believe that a
true seven-seater has to
comfor tably
accommodate adult
passengers in the third
row. With the deep
floor, more hip space
and larger shoulder
room, an adult
passenger of up to
1.75m will be seated
comfortably, even on
longer journeys,” said
Suzuki South Africa
divisional manager for
sales and marketing
André Venter.
According to Venter,
the increased cabin
space follows the
insight that more and
more young families
find themselves sharing
a home with parents as
well.
This increases the
need for comfortable
transport for children
and adults alike, which
is something the new
Ertiga does with ease.
In front, the driver
has a new instrument
cluster with chrome
bezels and a
multi-information trip
d i s p l ay.
The steering wheel on
GL models also features
chrome highlights and
steering controls, while
all models benefit from
the D-shaped steering
wheel with height
adjustment that allows
for ease of getting in
and out.
The instrument
cluster is housed in an
upright dashboard with
integrated radio, with
USB and Bluetooth
connectivity. There is
also a unique money
bin for notes and coins
and a special mobile
phone tray to store
connected or charging
phones.
In the lower section
of the centre console,
Suzuki has added two
air-conditioned cup
holders and a 12V
charging socket, with a
second charging socket
located behind the front
seats for the middle row
of passengers.
Suzuki has invested
significant engineering
time into making the
cabin of the Ertiga a
more comfortable place
than before. Some of
the improvements over
its predecessor include
new double door seals,
moulded
noise-absorbing
material in the roof and
additional floor and
door damping – all
leading to one of the
quietest cabins in its
class.
All Ertiga models are
equipped with two
airbags for front
passengers and ABS
brakes with electronic
brake force distribution
(EBD).
Suzuki has also
added ISOFIX-approved
seat anchors for child
seats and a reverse
parking sensor system
for the GL model.
Suzuki’s patented
TECT technology has
additional load paths
below the vehicle for
energy dispersion in a
collision.
It also uses ultra-high
tensile steel to create a
more rigid body that is
6kg lighter than before.
In the Ertiga, Suzuki
has developed specific
impact-absorbing
structures in the front
bumper, front
windscreen wipers and
bonnet to absorb the
impact of a pedestrian
in a possible pedestrian
accident.
This complies with
the standards set by the
European NCAP
programme.
Lastly, all models
feature an immobiliser
and the GL specification
level is also fitted with
a security alarm for
additional peace of
mind.
The all-new Ertiga will
be equipped with
Suzuki’s new K15B 1.5
litre petrol engine,
which offers direct fuel
injection and variable
valve timing for more
efficient power delivery.
The engine delivers
more power and torque
than the K14B engine it
replaces, while still
offering exceptional fuel
e c o n o m y.
In the Ertiga, the
K15B engine delivers 77
kW at 6,000rpm and
138 Nm at 4,400 rpm.
The latter is available
across a wider range of
engine speed than
b e fo r e .
Three versions of the
Suzuki Ertiga will be
available. All three
models are sold with
Suzuki’s promotional
200,000km/ five-year
mechanical warranty
and a four-year/
60,000km service plan.
SIVENATHI GOSA
Leo Mbini Schools Rugby Development is in
partnership with the Berlin and Ndevana
Community Police Forum to host a
tournament for 24 primary schools in Berlin
and the surrounding areas on May 29.
The main purpose of the tournament is
to raise awareness about the dangers of
alcohol and substance abuse.
“It is also a programme for safer
schools as we have seen in the past that
schools are not safe anymore with kids
carrying weapons and teachers being put
at high risk
“We are trying to bring back those
Wednesdays with kids filling the fields
and parents supporting them,” Mbini
said.
The GO! previously reported (Rugby
programme set to develop talent, August
Hempel
takes laurels
COLEEN GROBLER
Christian Hempel, 20 walked away
with two podium positions in the
junior section of the African
Sporting Championship which took
place between March 21 and 24 at
the Valley Gun Club in Paarl,
Western Cape.
This competition was organized
by FITASC Sporting, a shooting
discipline forming part of the
‘Federation Internationale de Tir Aux
Sportives de Chasse’ ( F I TA S C )
based in Paris.
The first two days of the
competition consisted of Sporting, a
tough discipline where Hempel
achieved second place.
The third and fourth day of the
programme for under-12 and U13 players
to revive the sport code in the area.
“I saw that these young boys are
passionate about the sport, but there are
not enough tournaments that
accommodate their age groups,
especially in the rural areas.
“There are about 14 schools in and
around Berlin that are participating, and
we are using Nkosinathi Fields and Berlin
Primary School’s sports field,” said Mbini.
competition consisted of Compak.
Hempel ended with a score of 173
out of 200, putting him in third
place alongside fellow South
African Karel Mestdach.
This resulted in a shoot off,
requiring the boys to shoot beside
the senior world champions.
In a surprise twist, both boys
achieved the same score a second
time which meant it went to sudden
death which Hempel then won,
earning him his third place spot
“When I saw that he [Mestdach]
missed the easy bird that I could
hit, I told myself that I can beat
him,” Hempel said.
Charities get
fun run boost
SIVENATHI GOSA
African Angels Independent School
and Busfare Babies are the lucky
beneficiaries of the upcoming fun run
hosted by Wild Women on The Run
(WWOTR) at Tea in the Trees on
Saturday April 6.
Both charities support women and
children in the Eastern Cape area.
“Annually, the Wild Women group
do what they can to raise as much as
possible for these two very worthy
charities.
“This year, a group of nine Wild
Women got together and strategised
on a fun way to raise money, and we
came up with this family fun event,”
said WWOTR member Jaci Annison.
When WWOTR began with its
inaugural run in 2012, founders Kim
Van Kets, Lucille Van Der Merwe, Lisa
Van Wyk and Jan Badenhorst's aim
was to group together women of all
ages and fitness levels and run the
beautiful Wild Coast.
“It was a non-competitive,
nurturing multi-day adventure. The
prize was not to reach the end, but
rather the experience along the way
celebrating each other and the
beautiful landscape,” Annison said.
She said after the first 2012 run,
the group felt so privileged to have
taken part in such an experience,
that they decided to give back and
use the opportunity to raise funds for
African Angels Independent School
and Busfare Babies.
To date R660,000 has been raised.
Pre-registration for the fun run
starts at 7am until 8am on the day,
followed by a chat and slide show
with trail running legend Van Kets.
The entry fee for the race is R80 for
adults and R40 for children under the
age of 12.
The race will start at 9am.
“The route is about 5km in the
beautiful Tea in the Trees forest.
“Extra lucky draw tickets are
available on the day for R10.”
The Bohemian Cricket Club celebrated
their awards evening with a special
dinner at their clubhouse in Beacon
B ay.
The club’s first team, who played in
the Border Premier League, finished
level with Fort Hare University on 66
points; their second XI won their league
for the fifth successive year, and the
third team finished second on the log,
completing a highly successful season
for Bohs, as they are fondly known.
The guest speaker on the evening
was professional cricket player and
coach, Jason Bowen, who was in the
past contracted to the Warwickshire
County Cricket Board in the UK,
coaching the youth and women’s
teams.
He was later contracted to the
England Cricket Board as the head
coach of the England Blind team and
was also a national selector for the
England Women’s team.
In 2010, Bowen was appointed
coaching manager at Eastern Province
Cricket where he was also in charge of
the High Performance Programme and
was a selector for the Warriors
franchise team.
As has been a tradition for many
years, the youngest first XI player had
to wear a 100-year-old Bohemians
blazer throughout the awards dinner as
well as give the vote of thanks.
This year, the task fell to Chad
Clarke-Evans, who played for the first
team at the age of 12.
Prizes awarded included:
ý Hole in the Hand for Worst Fielder:
Tiaan Hollander;
ý Duck Award for Most Ducks in
Season: Grant Dunga;
ý E.J Bryant Trophy for Most
Improved Play: the third XI;
ý Mark Tennyson Trophy for Best
Fielder: Jonty Craniey;
ý President’s Trophy for Outstanding
Lower League Player: Russell Krug who
captured 20 wickets and scored 801
runs with four centuries and three
half-centuries;
ý Fuller Trophy for Player of the Year:
Jonty Craniey, Bohs’ brilliant
wicketkeeper-batsman who scored 571
runs, enjoyed a strike rate of 114 with a
high score of 144 not out, and 26 sixes
during the season.
ý Stan Thwaites Trophy for
Efficiency: Dan Kitchen, an attacking
batsman for the third XI.
Endurance,
strategy and
good weather
were key factors
in the second
edition of the Real
Gijimas 50km Ultra
Marathon which started
in Zwelitsha on Sunday
morning before finishing
off in Mdantsane.
Runners such as
Bulelani Mgubo,
Siyabulela Madlavana,
Bric Sigxashe, Gift
Chigomararwa and
Mziwonke Ngwendu ran
together along the R102
past Walter Sisulu
University, Fort Jackson
and into Mdantsane.
This ultra marathon is
the last local qualifier for
the Comrades Marathon
to be run in June.
The first 15km of the
route proved to be quite
difficult with its many
hills and a steady ascent,
before reaching the R102
and branching off into
Berlin.
Mdantsane’s uphills
and downhills proved to
challenge the runners
one by one as some fell
behind, while others
started to break away to
inch ever closer to the
finish – with some really
picking up the pace over
the last 2km.
Ngcobo-born
Ngwendu, who was
experiencing the route
for the first time, came in
first place in a time of
3:01:23.
“This race needs a lot
of training rather than
speed in order to keep a
steady pace. Gift
[Chigomararwa] put a lot
of pressure on me and I
had to up my speed. At
42km I didn’t want
anyone behind me
although I really felt the
hills,” Ngwendu said.
A determined
Ngwendu will take part
in the Comrades
Marathon in June and
hopes to be “high up in
the finishers’ l i st ”.
Coming in just over an
hour later, was ladies’
podium winner Nokholo
Hlezupondo in 4:06:25.
A first-time participant
in the ultra marathon,
her strategy was to
analyse the course
closely and take it easy.
“I had no pressure at
all because at about
26km I was running
alone. I negotiated the
uphills and downhills at
an easy pace, running all
the way, although I must
say that the last 2km
was tough,” Hlezupondo
said.
TACT AND ENDURANCE: Men's winner of the Real
Gijimas 50km ultra, Mziwonke Ngwendu from
Nedbank Club and women's winner Nokholo
Hlezupondo from SANDF Pictures: AMANDA NANO
Hlezupondo is no
stranger to ultra
marathons and will
participate in her eighth
Two Oceans and
Comrades marathons
later this year.
“I started running in
2012 because I wanted to
lose weight. It grew on
me and I slowly started
to build my pace, now
I’m here,” she said.
Real Gijimas
chairperson Alex
Kambule said the race
has grown exponentially
since its inception in
2018 with positive
fe e d b a c k .
“The race has a lot
potential and it’s also the
only ultra marathon
owned by a club.
“Finances have been a
huge challenge, and in
order to attract more
athletes, the prize money
needs to be upped,”
Kambule said.
Kambule said the race
couldn’t have been
possible without
sponsors, the
community, SAPS, traffic
services and the
commitment of all club
members.
