King AntonioXCVI
As King Antonio XCVI it is a privilege for me to welcome you to the 2018 Texas Cavaliers’ River Parade. For more
than seventy-six years, the Texas Cavaliers, an all-volunteer organization has planned and produced this wonderful event
for locals and visitors of all ages. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our Parade Marshal, Clyde Johnson IV, and
the hundreds of Cavaliers that have devoted countless hours to ensure that our city enjoys a spectacular parade this
evening.
This year’s River Parade theme, “Magnificent Missions” will transform our San Antonio River into a pathway detailing
the missions of some of San Antonio’s children-based non-profits. Our children need a ”Mission” to live by and strive
for that will enrich their lives and help them accomplish their goals and dreams. Honoring us as Grand Marshal this
year is Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush, a man dedicated to protecting and preserving San Antonio’s historic
Missions—including Mission San Antonio de Valero, known to us as The Alamo. Please wave as he passes by tonight!
It is a pleasure for me to recognize our 2018 River Parade Charitable Honoree, The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio,
whose mission is to provide expert medical care to each child regardless of their family’s ability to pay. The Texas
Cavaliers are proud to partner with CHOSA.
One of the highlights of my reign as King Antonio is delivering checks on behalf of the Texas Cavaliers Charitable
Foundation. This year, 60 outstanding children’s organizations, including CHOSA, will receive grants totaling more than
$1.1 million. Since its founding in 1989, the Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundation has distributed more than $6 million
to the children of San Antonio!
Through the River Parade Children’s Program, the Cavaliers are hosting nearly 1,000 children at
tonight’s parade. Since 1996, this effort has brought smiles to the river by enabling more than
19,000 children to attend the River Parade and enjoy a complimentary dinner. Ultimately,
the success of this program is attributed to the generosity of many local businesses and
Cavalier members.
There is no greater mission than protecting our freedom and American way of life. I am, of
course, referencing our nation’s military. We are honored to have all of the branches of the
military represented in the River Parade tonight.
As King Antonio XCVI and on behalf of the Texas Cavaliers, I express my deepest
gratitude for the men and women of our military who bravely protect and defend
our country. There is a special group of soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who are
honored guests of the Texas Cavaliers tonight. These men and women are recovering
from injuries suffered in the line of duty. When you see them, please thank them for
their selfless service and wish them a speedy recovery.
It is my royal command that each of you gathered on the banks of the San Antonio
River join me in the fun and merriment that is the Texas Cavaliers’ River Parade.
Sit back, relax and enjoy.
Viva San Antonio and Viva Fiesta!
TEXAS
CAVALIERS
Parade Marshal
Everyone loves a parade, everyone enjoys a stroll along the San Antonio river and of course, everyone loves Fiesta, combining the three makes an
unforgettable 2018 Texas Cavaliers River parade.
The theme of this year’s parade is “Magnificent Missions” which relates both to our city’s historic structures and the mission of its people.
San Antonio was established by Spanish Catholics who had a Mission to integrate with the Payaya tribe of Native Americans and establish a growing
settlement. They created historic churches, known as Missions, which today give San Antonio its unique architectural and cultural character. Three
hundred years later, our diverse city of San Antonio flourishes. And, our communities Missions have evolved to new heights of health, prosperity, and
quality of life. Of these modern missions, the Texas Cavaliers are most proud of the community’s efforts to improve the lives of our children.
The Texas Cavaliers was established 94 years ago with the Mission to honor the memory of the brave heroes who gave their lives at the Alamo; to
encourage horsemanship in the age of the automobile; and to foster relationships with the U.S. military. The Cavaliers have expanded and evolved from
our original Mission by the addition of The Texas Cavalier Foundation, which this year, will financially support 60 children’s charities.
The theme of 2018 River Parade, Magnificent Missions, honors and celebrates the Missions of a pioneering group of Spanish Catholic settlers and their
world-renowned historic structures. But even more importantly, the theme honors and embraces the tireless work of children’s organizations in San
Antonio that toil daily with the Magnificent Mission to better our communities, our children, our city and the future of San Antonio.
We honor those who dedicate their personal missions to the betterment of our children; teachers who help them learn to read, parents who help
them navigate life, doctors and nurses who look for cures and help them heal. Athletes who give our children something to admire and to the incredible
organizations that help to feed, clothe, shelter and nurture children in need.
Today and every day, the Texas Cavaliers are focused on what we can do to make a difference in the lives of San Antonio’s children. This year, the Texas
Cavaliers Charitable Foundation will give more than $1.1 million to support children in need through 60 non-profit organizations. This includes; Zapatos,
The Texas Diaper Bank, Transplants for Children, The Children’s Shelter, Respite Care of San Antonio, Sunshine Cottage for Deaf Children and many, many
more. In fact, since 1989, the Cavaliers have given more than $6 million to support San Antonio’s children.
Each year, the Cavaliers name a Charitable Honoree to bring a bit of added attention to the charity. This year, we have selected The Children’s Hospital
of San Antonio (CHOSA,) The Texas Cavaliers are contributing to the creation of a pediatric heart program, focusing providing the earliest diagnostic
resources available for children with heart conditions, with minimally invasive treatment. The heart program will be an integral part of seamless and
essential critical care services the hospital is known for. The Texas Cavaliers are proud to be able to present CHOSA with a grant for $500,000.
In looking for someone who would understand “missions” and relate to the teaching and nurturing our children and protecting and preserving our
history for future generations, we are pleased to introduce George P. Bush, Commissioner, Texas General Land Office as this year’s Honorary Grand
Marshal.
Commissioner Bush is a native Texan, born in Houston (well, we can’t all be born in San Antonio!). Before dedicating his life to public service, he worked
as a public-school teacher, and he served our country in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan as an officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve. As Texas
Land Commissioner, he is the guardian of the Alamo, and is working to keep Shrine of Texas Liberty and 1836 alive every day, and for centuries to come.
Commissioner Bush is the grandson of President George H.W. Bush, the nephew of President George W. Bush and the son of former Florida Governor
Jeb Bush. He lives in Austin with his wife, Amanda, and their two sons, Prescott and Jack.
Our Commemorative Parade Program Cover is graced by the artwork created by Jaclyn Houy, a student at Bob Lewis Elementary
and the winner of our annual River Parade Art Contest. Jaclyn’s art work was selected from 2,252 entries from 62 different
elementary schools. The Texas Cavaliers presented the top 11 schools with grants totaling $46,000 to help fund their
school’s art programs.
On a more personal note I would like to extend special recognition Vice Parade Marshal, Scott Christy and to
our Operations Officer, Paul Rohlfs. These gentlemen are hard at work in the forming area, leading our team of
dedicated volunteers to make this parade a reality.
I would also like to recognize and thank my wife, Kim, who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes and who for
months has practically been a single parent to allow me to work on the parade, and my children; Bennett, Shelton
and Elle who have been extremely patient with their dad over the past year.
Special thanks go out to Scott’s wife, Emily, and Paul’s wife, Helen, for supporting their husbands as they have
worked all year to make the 2018 River Parade a success.
There are many others who deserve to be thanked and appreciated including River Parade Officers, volunteers and
sponsors, please visit page 17 in this program for a list of our sponsoring organizations.
Now, it’s time to look upstream and watch as the first float kicks off the 2018 Fiesta River Parade.
Thank you for joining us tonight, your ticket purchase helps to make a difference in the lives of
San Antonio’s children. For a complete list of organizations we are supporting this year, please
2018 Texas Cavaliers
Charitable Honoree
The moment the Sisters of Charity of the
Incarnate Word arrived in San Antonio in
1869, health care for children was
transformed. In 1918, the first pediatric
unit was opened at the Santa Rosa
Infirmary. The Sisters continued to care
for children throughout the 20th Century
and in 1959 opened the first and only
hospital for children, Santa Rosa
Children’s Hospital. In 1999, the Hospital
became a part of the CHRISTUS Health
family. In 2012, construction began to
transform the downtown campus into a
freestanding children’s hospital, solely
dedicated to proving world-class care to
children and families in South Central
Texas. The Children’s Hospital of San
Antonio is the culmination of the vision
of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate
Word.
The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio
has transformed inside and out. The
Children's Hospital of San Antonio has a
number of specialized programs to suit
the individual needs of our patients and
their families. From our top-of-the line
neonatal and pediatric intensive care
capabilities, to counseling and therapeutic
services for children in all stages of
development, we extend whole-health
treatment from professionals who care.
The generosity of the community makes
an invaluable difference in the lives of
children receiving care at The Children’s
Hospital of San Antonio. We stand strong
today because of the essential partnerships
we have with the community, such as the
Texas Cavaliers. As a non-profit hospital,
we rely on the financial support of our
partners, community members, and
individual donors to continue caring for
the patients and families we are
privileged to serve.
The Texas Cavaliers are contributing to
the formation of the pediatric heart
program, a place of healing that focuses
on providing the most effective and
efficient medical treatments for the
children in our care. The heart program
will be an integral part of seamless and
essential critical care services, working
Thank you to the Texas Cavaliers for all of your support!
cohesively with emergency services,
neonatal intensive care, and surgical
services. The heart program brings
together the earliest diagnostic capacity
available for children with heart
conditions and will utilize the most
minimally invasive treatments possible.
Anchored in CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health
System’s heritage of caring for every
child, The Children’s Hospital of San
Antonio is writing a new chapter for
pediatric care in which every child —
even the sickest — can receive the best
care available, without leaving San
Antonio.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the
following foundations and individuals.
Thanks to their generosity,
The Children's Hospital of San Antonio
will receive a gift of $500,000 as this
year's charitable honoree.
Grand Marshal
George P. Bush
Commissioner, Texas General Land Office
George Prescott Bush is a native Texan, born in Houston on April 24, 1976.
He was elected Texas Land Commissioner on Nov. 4, 2014, earning more
votes than any other statewide candidate on the ballot. Commissioner Bush
took office on Jan. 2, 2015.
As Texas Land Commissioner, Bush works to ensure Texas veterans get the
benefits they’ve earned, oversees investments that earn billions of dollars for
public education and manages state lands to produce the oil and gas that is
helping make America energy-independent.
Commissioner Bush also watches over the Alamo and preserves historic archives at the General Land Office that
date back to the Spanish Empire.
Commissioner Bush has dedicated his life to public service, working as a public school teacher in Miami after
graduating from Rice University and serving in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan as an officer in the U.S.
Naval Reserve.
Commissioner Bush is a successful businessman. He joined Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP after earning his
Juris Doctorate at the University of Texas School of Law. He subsequently co-founded Pennybacker Capital LLC,
a real estate private equity firm, in 2007, and St. Augustine Partners LLC, a Fort Worth-based investment firm
focused on oil and gas transactions and consulting for private businesses.
Commissioner Bush is also committed to helping fellow Texans in his private life. He co-chaired a $30 million
capital campaign for Big Brothers Big Sisters in North Texas and served as the co-chairman of the Dallas/Fort
Worth Celebration of Reading. He was the Tarrant County chairman for Uplift Education — a highly successful
Dallas-based public charter network focused on closing the achievement gap in inner-city public schools. He also
served on the Board of Trustees for the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin.
Commissioner Bush is the grandson of President George H.W. Bush, the son of former Florida Governor Jeb
Bush and the nephew of President George W. Bush. He lives in Austin with his wife, Amanda, and their two sons,
Prescott and Jack.
San Antonio’s first zoo consisted of a collection of animals assembled in San
Pedro Park in the 1800s. In 1914, Colonel George W. Brackenridge, one of the
city’s leading citizens and founder of the San Antonio Express-News, placed
buffalo, elk, deer, monkeys, a pair of lions, and four bears on land he had deeded
over to the city in what is now known as Brackenridge Park. This collection
became the San Antonio Zoo.
In November 1929, two of the first cageless exhibits in America--the Barless
Bear Terraces and the Primate Paradise--opened, offering visitors unprecedented
views of animals. When the Richard Friedrich Aquarium was dedicated in 1948,
it was described in the local press as “the world’s greatest.” The Hixon Bird
House, funded through the efforts of Colonel Frederick C. Hixon, opened in
1966, featuring a simulated tropical rain forest and free-flying birds. The zoo’s
A partnership between the San Antonio Book Festival and the Texas Cavaliers, the Fiction Contest is a wonderful
craft of writing.
This year’s theme was “MISSION: San Antonio” and featured more than 200 submissions from more than 40 schools
Here are this year’s winners:
Anais Nunez
11th/12th Grade Winner
Providence Catholic School
Story: Timeless
Describe the process of writing your story.
The first thing I thought of when I saw the theme for this year’s contest was “San Antonio” was family. There are a lot of things that stick out about San Antonio
that are so essential to the essence of our city but for me the most important one is how much family matters to everyone who lives here. I struggled to think of
how to work with this topic though, but finally I thought of my own family and, as a senior in high school about to attend college, something felt really right about
writing a story based on my own family as a kind of tribute to them. “Timeless” is based on a lot of real things going on in my life currently – living in a threegeneration
household, struggling with leaving home, and realizing the impact one’s family can have on oneself. As soon as I nailed down the outline of the story I
wanted to tell it flowed out easily, with only a few bumps and blocks along the way.
What other types of writing have you done?
For the most part I have a lot of ideas for things to write but rarely get around to actually writing them for one reason or another. Because of this I have a lot of
small bits of writing in the notes folder on my phone, just a few words or maybe a few sentences that come from momentary inspiration. I favor writing short
stories and some poetry and prose because I have more time to do these things than working on larger projects.
Who has helped you the most as a writer so far?
Reading helps the most with improving one’s own writing so all the authors I’ve read in the past few years – from Walt Whitman to Leigh Bardugo – have greatly
helped me develop not only the craft of my writing but what I choose to write about and how I go about it.
Who is your favorite author?
My favorite author usually changes with whichever book I’m reading at the time, so as of now I really admire V. E. Schwab, who wrote the Shades of Magic series.
Do you have ambitions to write as a career?
I’ve known I want to be a writer since I was little girl, so it is definitely my goal to pursue writing as my career. I’ve learned about the power that books and literary
movements can have and want to be a part of that someday. Words truly can change the world and I hope mine can too, even if it is only one person I can touch.
31 Find Us On #TXCavs

Ryan Jacob
9th/10th Grade Winner
O’Connor High School
Story: A Search for Spirit
Describe the process of writing your story.
After hearing about the competition, it took months to come up
with a storyline. After being struck with inspiration, I would just sit
over Christmas break and type until I had a story.
What other types of writing have you done?
I have written some poems that have been published, along with
some short stories that I would write as a kid. However, most of
my creative writing is for school.
Who has helped you the most as a writer so far?
My dad has been an influential part of my writing career, as
he always is the one who proofreads my paper and offers
constructive criticism. Additionally, his playful insult that my dog
writes better than me forces me to prove him wrong.
Who is your favorite author?
My favorite author is Agatha Christie, as she wrote some of the
best mysteries I’ve read. The plot twists in her book are excellent,
as are her engaging storylines and captivating tones of suspense.
Do you have ambitions to write as a career?
While I have no idea what I want to do when I grow up, I would
enjoy writing as a career. The whole process is energizing and
requires me to use all of my creativity, which is challenging but
rewarding in the end.
Delaney Dwyer
7th/8th Grade Winner
St. George Episcopal School
Story: Crushed
Describe the process of writing your story.
I started by thinking of key ideas and things I wanted to include.
I typed them out and began to research Mission San José. I
continued writing and the story slowly morphed, with my ideas,
into the final product it is now.
What other types of writing have you done?
I have done a few other types of writing as school work, like
formal essays, poetry, and other pieces of creative writing.
Who has helped you the most as a writer so far?
I have learned a lot from all of my teachers over the years. I learn
so many new things that I take with me as I go on to the next
grade. Even though I haven’t been through much schooling, my
teachers have helped me improve so much every year.
Who is your favorite author?
I don’t have a favorite writer. Every book that I read makes an
impression on me. They all have been written in different styles
and dialects. I think every book plays a part in the way I write my
stories.
Do you have ambitions to write as a career?
Currently, I don’t think I’ll pursue writing as a career. I have other
interests I would like to explore. Although things could change in
the future, and if an opportunity presented itself, I would be very
happy writing professionally.
First Responders
The First Responders Program was launched in 2011 to honor
and thank the hardworking men and women of the police
and fire departments who risk their lives to protect
ours. Each year, using donations from companies
and individuals that share our gratitude for
the service of our city’s first responders, we
purchase and distribute River Parade tickets
to active members—and their families—of
the SAPD, SAFD, Bexar County Sheriff’s
Dept. Regional DPS and Park Police, as well as
honorees of The 100 Club.
The Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundation Board of Trustees believes that every dollar donated to the Foundation
should go directly toward children in need. To that end, the Board produces an annual golf tournament to directly
offset operating expenses and support annual giving. We gratefully recognize are sponsors for their ongoing
generous support of children charities and we thank our volunteers and participants.
Remember, it’s not about golf—it’s about the kids!
Giving back to the places we call home
is helping here.
That’s why we partner with over 6,500 local organizations
to help make a difference.
For H-E-B, Helping Here is more than a statement. It’s a spirit of giving
that goes all the way back to the day we opened our first store over
110 years ago.
Today, we’re proud to support initiatives like the H-E-B Food Bank
Assistance Program, our annual Feast of Sharing holiday dinners and the
H-E-B Mobile Kitchen that provides on-site relief in areas devastated by
natural disasters.
Whether we’re honoring outstanding public school professionals or
conserving our natural resources, we’re helping here to make a difference.
It’s our way of saying thanks for allowing us to be your neighbor.
CAVALIERS
Charitable Foundation
Dear River Parade Guests,
The Parade that you are enjoying this evening is the result of literally thousands of hours of work put in by the members of
the Texas Cavaliers. The proceeds from the Texas Cavaliers River Parade, the first and most spectacular of the Fiesta parades,
go to support the children of Texas.
This year, King Antonio XCVI will deliver checks totaling over $1.1 million to 60 children’s charities. As the president of the
Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundation, I would like to personally thank you for your support of this great event.
Please take a moment to explore this year’s charities by reviewing the remaining pages in the program. Perhaps you will find
an organization that might be able to serve a family member, friend or neighbor. It is our honor to present these wonderful
organizations that do so much for our community.
They have our hearts,
we have theirs.
The Heart Center at The Children’s Hospital of
San Antonio provides comprehensive care to children
with heart problems. We performed the city’s first
pediatric heart surgery and we’ll continue to advance
heart care for the children of San Antonio,
South Texas, and beyond.
Special thanks to the
Texas Cavaliers for
their generous support.
Our experienced team of pediatric cardiologists,
cardiac mid-level providers, sonographers, techs, nurses,
and cardiac surgeons treat patients from before birth to
adulthood with congenital or complex heart problems.
We also work in concert with a wide variety of specialists
to bring a multidisciplinary approach to care.
Until there are no children who need our help,
we will continue to need yours. Lend your support
design students with children who have a
physical disability. The designers are
