Let’s get serious for
a moment, We are a
very lucky community
to see our pride
season start next week
and it is my Pride to
share how much the
DDG has contributed
to starting and
building Prides and
other So-Cal gay
events. Every year,
the work load makes
me think this will be
my last year, but then
someone reminds me
of our mission and
importance of local
media support.
I remember when
Pride was celebrated
on Arenas road,
then it moved to
the stadium and
then Downtown PS.
And everyone was
expecting it to be a
disaster. But each
one got better and
then Joshua Tree,
DHS, and next week
Cathedral City. Our
only complaint is "I
can't find a DDG!",
They can be found
on line 24/7 at
desertdailyguide.com.
But we are addressing
it in April and I think
everyone will hate it.

STAN BERNING - ARTIST FINDING
HIMSELF THROUGH HIS ART - NEW
MEXICO
Stan Bernng was very open to
discussing his art at his display at
Art Palm Springs. He has a poetic
manner of describing the art and
the process of creating it. He has
been a working artist, creating
drawing,paintings, sculpture, and
prints most of his adult life. Thirty
Years of his creative life has been
lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The New Mexico landscape along
with his studies of life drawing the
human body have inspired his work
which also includes writing and
teaching as well as being a gallery
owner.
He describes, in his own words,
how life drawing has affected him.
"There is no cheating life drawing.
In a landscape no one but the artist
will know if a tree has been moved
or the contour of a mountain
changed. But a drawing of the
human body, even allowing for
it's infinite varieties of shapes and
sizes, is either accurately rendered,

deliberately abstracted or obviously
flawed. Figure drawing, for me has
always been about getting out of the
way while my eyes see and my hands
render."
Stan offered to show some of his past
work which was carefully stored in
a wood box with individual prints of
contour line drawings of the human
figure. These completed during
a period in his career where life
drawing became an inspiration for
integration into landscape painting.

The paintings in the exhibit were
combinations of watercolor and
gouache and some oil painting. Most
were landscapes inspired by living
and working in the colorful New
Mexico Desert. He described his
early years in New Mexico where
as a driver for a courier service he
traveled between locations and
observed the contours and colors
of the landscape in various light
conditions These experiences
influenced along with the study of
the human body integrated into
the landscapes formed the visual
abstractions found in the paintings.

Mr. Berning's work has been
exhibited in locations from San
Francisco and Paris to the Lincoln
Center in New York. In 2005

In 1977 singer Anita Bryant kicked off her anti-gay work in an effort
to repeal Miami's new non-discrimination ordinance. Successful,
Bryant took that campaign on the road across the country. The next
year the Florida legislature ruled that lesbians and gay men were not
fit parents. In 1979, Ronni Sanlo came out as a lesbian and lost
custody of her two young children. Years later, she wrote a letter to
Anita Bryant. This readers theatre stage play, both dramatic and
humorous, shares the challenges of pain and the power of forgiveness,
as it tells the stories of LGBT history during that time through the
AIDS crisis to the present.

You grew up an all-American guy in
Arizona, playing football, before moving to
Los Angeles to pursue acting. How did that
transition happen?
I took a theater class my junior
year of high school, and for
whatever reason my teacher was
very encouraging. I think he
simply needed more guys in the
class, but nonetheless he let me
skip into the advanced theater
program, and
suddenly the captain of the football
team was leaving practice early
to hurry to rehearsals. I’m sure
I wasn’t anything too special on
stage, but I definitely enjoyed
myself enough to want to make a
career out of it, and I guess I was
simply naive enough to think I
could make it happen. So I packed
my bags and headed to Hollywood.
How do you reflect on your days as
a model for Calvin Klein and Tommy
Hilfiger?
The modeling thing wasn’t really
for me.
You have been a very in-demand, busy
and successful actor for years and now
you are on Bravo’s “Imposters.” Has the
journey been as rewarding as your current
successes?
Absolutely! I’ve had a lot of
incredible experiences, as well as a
lot of difficult ones, and I wouldn’t
trade any of them.
How is it to star in Imposters, on a very
innovative and groundbreaking network
like Bravo?
I love being on Bravo. They are
relatively new to the scripted game,
so I feel like they are especially
committed to helping their shows
succeed. Plus Bravo fans are
diehard.
What does your average day look like?
Normally my day would consist
of several or all of the following:
work out, meditate, film, meetings,
study, write... However, I am at
an interesting precipice right now
in my life as I am about to have a
daughter in a couple of months,
and since my life is probably about
to change forever, my daily agenda
has temporarily shifted slightly. At
the moment my days consist of,
in addition to doing press for
Imposters, basically getting ready
to become a dad.
For my lady that means “nesting,”
i.e. nonstop decorating of the
baby’s room and buying baby
supplies and whatnot for the last
7 months. For me it’s been more
about getting my mind right. I’ve
read more books than I have in the
last couple years. I’ve learned to
surf, sail, golf, slack-line, play the
ukulele, and play racket ball. I’ve
gone camping, dirt biking, rock

climbing, rappelling, played tennis
and basketball consistently, and
competed in a triathlon. Next on
the list is Brazilian
jiu jitsu. It’s as if I’m attempting to
obtain some last minute knowledge
and skills in hopes of being able
to impart even a modicum of
wisdom on this little girl. I feel very
fortunate to have been afforded the
opportunity to take some time to
reflect on my life—where I’ve been,
where I’m at, and where I want
to go—because pretty soon my
average day may look a whole lot
different.

Tell me about your fans? Do you have any
interesting stories?
I love meeting fans. I was at a gym
today on a Navy Base in Coronado
playing basketball. A couple guys
challenged my buddy and me to a
game of 2 on 2. Half way through
the game the guy defending me
said, “You look like an actor.” He
was trying to think of who I looked
like the whole game, and I’m pretty
sure that’s why we won. He finally
figured it out and we took some
pictures and agreed to a rematch
next time.
What is your favorite cause or charity?
I compete in a triathlon every year
to help raise money for St. Jude
Children’s Hospital. I love St. Jude
because when a family takes their
child to the hospital to be treated

But that is to be expected because we like the old
ways. We moved here to keep the old ways. But
that never works. If you want to know, stop by our
booth and we will tell you in advance. We have
about $500.00 in giveaways from our advertisers
and even some surprise gifts. I am not sure of the
ducks game because everyone seems to win the
big prize.
We made great gains in my life time, we are
bigger, we are bolder, and we have more
acceptance then ever. We have great bars,
restaurants, and hotels to sustain our community.
This week, The Tool Shed and Richard Passmore
raised $10,000 for AID/Lifecycle and that is
repeated all over town by others. As Adrian has
developed a new following of younger readers
with the cosplay/anime community. They
have been inviting us to cover expos all over
Southern California. The cosplay community
is very supportive and affirming of our queer
community. One common threat that comes
up is the way we treat consent. They have a big
sign that says "Cosplay is not consent". Some
people are still not getting that. They still think
provocative dress or action is consent.
I can assure you, we are all part of
the #metoo movement when it came
to consent.
Before consent is given, don't assume its not given
under any circumstances. Anyone that knows
me and my Leather Trident membership, knows
I don't like to throw a wet blanket on anything.
But without consent, you are bumping up against
actual civil or criminal charges.

touched. AND FOR HOW LONG!
This is not an issue for the 99%, Most do nothing
until invited or they will ask. "Baby its cold
outside", to many, is a harmless song, but to some
victims of rape, it is 3 minutes of horror.
As our community grows, we need to become
more civil towards each other. If you backstab
some you claim to be friends with, what does that
really say about your innocence.
So no matter the setting, maintain a respectful
attitude of being kind to everyone you meet,
especially your bartenders , barbacks and
whomever serves you. Their intent is to make
life fun for a lot of people, not just you. A tip
shows graditude for that job so if you can afford
it, tip well. If not, it's understood your suppoprt is
equally valued.
But also stand your ground when someone does
not respect you or your space. Space is something
built on trust and different with each relationship.
You don't have to fight them, let them know and
leave it at that. Don't argue with a fool. I am a
great advocate of ghosting troubled people that
never seem to improve. Drunks, Republicans, and
the like! I am kidding Drunks are not the same
as Republicans because Drunks don't know what
they are doing. That is a joke of course, there are
good people on both sides. We just have to be
"Good-er".
A good rule of thumb is if you don’t know their
name, you don’t actually have any relationship,
even if you see each other often. Again, nearly
everyone knows this already. Don't accept the
2005 narative “If you act provocatively, you
somehow need to accept unwanted sexual
battery.” Intentionally sexually touching without
