Present Status: Scientist „E1‟ and scientist in-charge of BSL-3 lab, Biotechnology Division,
Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR), Jammu Tawi, India,
Details of Research experience (1992-till date):
The Ph.D work was carried out in the Department of Microbiology, AIIMS, under the
supervision of Dr. Ashok Rattan, Additional Professor. The work included the
characterization of bacterial strains of Salmonella typhi biochemically, serologically,
and by molecular typing methods such as Whole Cell Protein analysis (WCPA) by
SDS- PAGE. Finally all these methods were compared with 16S r RNA typing.
Worked as research scientist in Department of Microbiology, Ranbaxy Research Labs
(India's leading pharmaceutical industry). Actively involved in screening of new
chemical entity (NCEs) for its antibacterial, antifungal and anti-mycobacterial activity
based on NCCLS guidelines, screening the new molecules for there in vivo activities
in mice, guinea pig and rat models for IND directed studies.
Worked as research scientist with Lupin Laboratories Ltd, Pune, Maharastra. The
research area was NCEs research on anti-infectives with focus on antimycobacterial
compounds. Established in-vivo models of M. tuberculosis in mice and guinea pig.
Achieved expertise in intranasal mice model of M. tuberculosis, intranasal and
intracranial mice models of C. neoformans.
Working as Scientist E1 and scientist in-charge of BSL-3 lab in Biotechnology
Division of Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, Jammu. Established the antiinfective
screening facility and initiated the anti-infective screening. Principal
Investigator and active member in laboratory's various research programs, presently
heading the anti infective group. My group is extensively screening the plant extracts,
essential oils and phytomolecules for therapeutic and non-therapeutic uses. One of the
main objectives of our research is to look for more efficacious combination of
phytomolecules with anti-infective agents. Such combinations can reduce the
emergence of resistance in microorganisms. One such topical combination from our
group is already in the clinical trials. The group also actively working on the
combination therapy of antiTB drugs with plant based Immunomodulators. Such
combinations are aimed at shortening the treatment regimen of TB and prevention of
relapse of TB due latency.
Drug efflux is one of the major cause resistances in microorganisms. The group is
also working bacterial efflux pumps by cloning and expressing them in E coli host.
At the same time we are also designing the synthetic molecules as inhibitors of these
efflux pumps.
We are also exploring the new therapeutic targets in M tuberculosis by using In vivo
Induced Antigen Technology (IVIAT). This technology utilizes the pooled sera from
TB patents to detect the antigens expressed under diseased condition.

Major research areas:
Anti-infective research with reference to identification of plant derived pharmacophores.
