From the Principal
Welcome back to our first Newsletter. I would like to put in an early recommendation
for our first P & C Meeting this Monday. This group will be utilised very often as a
consultation group on uniform changes, welfare and curriculum changes, to name a
few. They are your representative body and they are only viable if they represent a
cross section of our parents.
We welcome two new teachers - Mr. Budd comes to us from Goulburn High School as a
very experienced H.S.I.E. teacher; equally experienced is Mr. Vartiainen from Barham
High School who joins our PD Health & PE faculty.
Throughout this year we will be making more use of our website. It will include
assessment schedules, faculty information as well as up to date policies. We still have
old-fashioned paper which is lucky because we are heading into our third day without
Internet. We can't print, bank or use student attendance records. What did we do
before we had time-saving computers?
Have a good term.
Students receive Shire Awards!
Bellingen High are extremely proud of Justin
Alford (Year 10) and Karlie Swanson (Year 9)
who were announced Bellingen Shire's
Sportsperson of the Year and Junior
Sportsperson of the Year on Australia Day.
Congratulations Justin and Karlie - what a
great achievement!
Gold Excursion 2011
A very successful Gold Excursion was held on the 6 th and 7 th December. There were
approximately 100 students who attended the excursion, the first time 3 buses have
been taken.
Congratulations to all students who attended, their behaviour was outstanding and an
enjoyable (but wet) time was had at Movieworld and Dreamworld.
Many thanks to Rob Wickham and Julie Taylor for their outstanding organisation.
Thanks also to Ms Langley, Mr. Dillon and Ms Weeks for making this a very successful
excursion possible.

Gold and Silver Excursions 2012
These excursions will both be held again this year. We are again running our "lay-by"
system. If you think you will be up for some costs, whether it is a major excursion or
similar thing, you can pay the activity off gradually. If for some reason your child
does not go on the Gold or Silver Excursion and it is before the forfeit of deposit date,
then we will refund your money. If you wish to take advantage of the "lay-by" system,
go to the Front Office, nominate the activity and make your payment.
LOTE News
The LOTE department has an exciting program this term.
We will be introducing Indonesia as a country and learning about where it is, who its
neighbours are, the understanding of its Emblem, National Anthem and history of the
country. This gives us an understanding of Indonesia and its people.
Our language program is new this year and we will be utilising the computers to
access language programs. Please remember your earphones/headphones for the
allocated computer time.
Interesting fact........we have 10 students in Year 7 who have already visited
Indonesia and 8 students who have booked a holiday to Bali this year - hope they will
be able to practice their language skills! Makasih (Thanks).
Late last year many of our
Year 7 students spent the
afternoon learning about the
medieval period with two
people, Colin, who played the
part of an English Knight,
and Ray, who was a Scottish
Highlander. They brought in
heaps of different types of
weapons, armour and
clothing, and gave us all a
chance to hold the weapons
and wear the armour and
clothing. They even let us
fight with fake weapons.
From the HSIE Faculty
Medieval Day
Ray used his bow to shoot
arrows at Colin who used his shield to hit them away.
Ray told us lots of facts about the bagpipes and played some music. They
showed us different sword techniques, what they used certain weapons for and
how far an arrow could be shot with a longbow.
Overall it was a really good day and everyone had a lot of fun.
Sport News
Term 1 is always a very busy time for sport at Bellingen High. Swimming and
many team sports have Mid North Coast trials and early rounds of the State
knockouts. At this time it is important for students and parents to understand
that students do not have to attend any of these events. However, once a
student is selected and then submits their name down to attend an event, they
MUST attend. If due to unforeseen circumstances they need to withdraw, it is

the students responsibility to see the sports organisers and their coach
immediately so other students do not suffer.
Congratulations to our 2011 Year 9 and
Year 10 boys' basketball team who
competed in a local competition in Coffs
Harbour in Term 4. The boys put in a
fantastic effort and were runners-up
narrowly losing to Bowraville in the Grand
Final. The boys should be very proud of
their achievements. Well done! Look
BELLINGEN HIGH CHOOL UNIFORM POLICY
1. Students who attend school with inappropriate footwear (e.g. thongs, crocs, scuffs or
slip-on sandals without a strap, high heels, ugg boots or slippers) may be isolated from
practical classes, or sent home to get more appropriate footwear. In all cases, it is best for
students to have an explanatory note from home AND report to the Deputy Principal’s
office before school to get a Red Uniform Slip.
Dress Code:
1. Students who are not dressed to an appropriate standard for school will be either
provided with appropriate clothing OR given private study in isolation OR sent home if
parents are contactable.
2. Shirts must have collar, sleeves and be neat and tidy.
NO ripped clothing, singlets, string shoulder tops as shirts, sleeveless shirts, low cut
necklines or armholes, midriff tops (see skin, not in!), slogans or pictures excepting brand
names (as in small pocket sized logo), no underwear as outerwear (e.g. petticoats).
Blue denim shorts for either girls or boys are acceptable during Term 1 unless deemed
inappropriate because of decency, logo or because they are torn or frayed. Boys can also
wear grey shorts. Girls cannot wear denim skirts.
If students continue to not meet dress code requirements then they will be subject to the
school discipline code and placed on an appropriate level.
Uniform Process:
1. Before School: It is the responsibility of students to comply with the
Bellingen High School Uniform code. Any student out of uniform, for any reason,
must report to the Deputy Principal’s Office before school every day to get a Red Uniform
Slip. The Girls’ Advisor and Deputy Principal will issue Red Slips before school and
during Roll Call daily. Names of students issued with Red Slips will be recorded.
Senior students must report to the Deputy Principal’s Office for a Red Slip as soon
as they swipe in to school.
2. Roll Call – Any student who is Out of Uniform without a Red Slip will be sent to the Deputy
Principal’s office. Uniform information will be recorded for all students.
3. Students who are in uniform will be regularly rewarded.
4. The Deputy Principal will make any final decisions about Uniform, taking into account the
individual situation of students.
5. As a general rule, students who have an explanatory note from home and who show
commitment to school uniform, will not lose privileges
6. Students who consistently fail to bring note from home and appear not to have legitimate

easons for being out of uniform will lose privileges. In these cases, a letter is sent home
indicating that a student is to be placed on Loss of Privileges
7. Students placed on loss of privileges may not attend extracurricular activities, including
School Socials, Gold and silver Excursions, sporting events. Students who return to
wearing school uniform can ask to be placed back on privileges by requesting the Deputy
Principal to monitor them for 10 days for uniform compliance. Be advised that students
will not be removed from loss of privileges during Term 4.
8. If a student persistently refuses to commit to the School Uniform process, the Deputy
Principal will contact home and advise that failure to comply will be deemed as Continued
Misbehaviour under our Discipline Code and placed on an appropriate Level.
