With its natural pools for
swimming surrounded by rare
birds and butterflies the Waterfall
of the Nymphs in the national park
of Isalo is truly a magical place.
Ile. La faune et la flore gâteront les amoureux
de la nature. On y observe facilement plusieurs
Simply hearing its enchanted
name makes you want to go
there. The area around the
waterfall (‘Waterfall of the
Nymphs’) harbours a large
number of rare species of
birds, butterflies and lizards. The spot is
surrounded by natural pools, ‘the blackpool’
and ‘the blue pool’. Swimming in such cool
warm clear waters can only do you good and
it is the most frequently visited site of the
National Park of Isalo.
The water flowing is generally tepid ;
remember that the site is close to Ranohira,
a town that is in the south of the island,
which has a hot climate. The waterfall
is at the bottom of the canyon and if you
look up towards the sky, you will have a
stunning view. The sun's rays are reflected
in the water, creating fantastic patterns.
Children, as well as older visitors, are always
absolutely fascinated. The tour guide will
give you information about Malagasy culture
during your visit and will certainly tell you
the history of this waterfall, which owes its
name to the fact that the site used to shelter
a large number of frogs (a ‘nymphe’ is a type
of frog).
The national park of Isalo, founded in
1962, covers an area of 80,540 hectares, and
there is plenty to keep you busy during your
visit. 50 or so kilometres long and 20km
wide, with its extraordinary fauna and flora,
the site will undoubtedly mark your stay on
the island of Madagascar. Visitors will easily
spot several species of birds, amphibians and
reptiles, and often lemurs. The scenery is
very varied: it includes savannah grassland,
sandy valleys, sclerophyll forest, geological
formations, as well as the Tsingy (needleshaped
limestone peaks). The mountain
massif of Isalo is composed of a plateau of
continental sandstone dating back to the
Jurassic period.
Une baignade dans de l’eau
si claire et limpide vous
fera sûrement du bien.
Swimming in such cool
warm clear waters can
only do you good.
