2008 Annual Report
Executive Director’s Report
The signal event of 2008 was the completion and opening of the new visitor center in
February. Known informally as the Remick Barn, it was the realization of several years’
planning and fundraising. We immediately began putting it to good use. A Chamber of
Commerce mixer introduced hundreds of area business people to the building while it was
still being furnished. The beautiful program room made possible our first February vacation
programs for schoolchildren. A series of traditional music concerts produced by Harvey
Reid brought outstanding performers to delighted audiences in an intimate setting.
Community members used the space for private events to celebrate marriages, mark the
passing of loved ones, and hold business meetings.
In the Eye of the Beholder, the museum’s first exhibit in the Remick Barn Gallery, was a
wonderful success and garnered a great deal of publicity for the museum.
The second floor gallery in the visitor center housed our first major exhibition, In the Eye of
the Beholder: Folk Art from Old York opening to much acclaim in May. It was part of a
collaborative effort among eleven museums to create the Maine Folk Art Trail. Volunteers
joined staff as full partners in planning and mounting the display. Jack and Marlene Johnson,
Hap Moore, Richard and Roberta Cunningham, Amy Brown, Nancy Albert, and Lynn
Szymanski, Diane Harvey, and John Heinl worked closely with Registrar and Acting Curator
Cynthia Young-Gomes, Education Director Anne Poubeau, and Executive Director Scott
Stevens as a truly dynamic team. York teacher Michele Freitag organized a display of art by
schoolchildren for the interactive section. Designer Joe Viamonte transformed the group’s
ideas into a visually engaging display. The prominent new facility and the well-publicized
exhibition drew 24% more visitors than we saw in 2007.
A grant from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation subsidized the development of
new educational programs in the visitor center. We were able to make part-time Education
Coordinator Zoe Keefer-Norris a full time assistant to Anne Poubeau. She created more
after-school and summer offerings. The Junior Docents Program continued to blossom
under Zoe’s direction and the dedication of part-time education assistant Richard Bowen.
Lancy Downs, Katie Berlin, Laura Egan, Zach Bald, Jessica Kofman, Darcie Brown, Briana
Eaton, Laura Noerdlinger, Danny Bottino, Mallory Evans, Shelly Potter, Emily Rumble,
Sarah Baker, Erin Trainer, and Allison Gilmer enlivened our summer with their enthusiasm
2008 Annual Report Page | 1
A new facility and dedicated corps of Junior Docents allowed
the museum to expand children’s educational programs.
and creative energy. They created a
display on local myths in our case at
the York Public Library, helped with
children’s programs, and
demonstrated traditional crafts and
games to visitors.
Perkins Fellows Erin Andrews, Lisa
Zevorich, Alyssa Peterson, and
Emma Bonanomi studied visitor
orientation at several museums in
the region and developed a plan for
Old York’s visitor center and the
Ramsdell House. Their presentations
in the August Fellows Symposium
impressed all who attended. A grant
from The Davis Family Foundation
in December provided funding for
to fulfill much of their plan for the
visitor center, a project for 2009.
Old York’s deep, truly remarkable
collections have grown primarily
through gifts from people entrusting
us with their heritage. That tradition
continued in 2008. A whole report
could be devoted to the individual
objects, but two gifts will serve as
examples here. The Viele family gave Old York a wonderful array of items related to the
World War I experiences of John and Madeline Lynch Emerson. These included his Army
uniform and equipment, her nurse’s uniform, documents and letters between them. Peter
Moore, author of a popular newspaper column on local history for many years, donated his
large collection of material on York in the twentieth century. It took staff members and
helpful volunteers two days to move the collection from Moore’s house to temporary
storage kindly provided by Ellis Insurance. The process of going through thousands of
documents and ephemera, plus some artifacts, has consumed more than a year.
The wealth of historical material given to Old York poses new challenges. We have filled our
archival and artifact storage areas. Our small staff struggles to catch up on the
documentation that makes historical material valuable to researchers and visitors. In the near
future we will have to make some difficult decisions about the kinds and quantities of
material we will hold. We look forward to the thoughts of our members and community on
such issues.
For only the second time in nineteen years, the 2008 Designer Show House was a property
in Kittery. Show House Chair Carol Coles and an able group of volunteers and committee
members worked hard to overcome such factors as rain and location not on a main road to
present a very successful event. As always, a group of remarkable designers provided the
magic that makes show houses so appealing to the public.
The inaugural Old York
Antiques Show took place
on the main museum
campus in September.
Booths were set up in the
Old Schoolhouse, Jefferds’
Tavern and Remick Barn.
In addition to the
Presenting Sponsor, York
Antiques Gallery, the
Antiques Show was
underwritten by RE/MAX
Realty One, Hap Moore
Antiques Auctions,
Suzanne Little Interiors
and Morgillo Financial
Management.
Development and
Community Relations
The inaugural Old York Antiques Show was held in September.
Dealers, including Bob Withington Antiques, made creative use of
space at the museum.
Director Erica Holthausen worked closely with a volunteer planning group to develop and
organize the event. The committee included Robert Coles, Nancy Gustad, Karen Ida
Peterson, Amy Phalon and Susan Stanley. Kristi Samber led a dedicated committee to
organize the very successful preview party. The driving force behind the event, however, was
Antiques Dealer Bill Schwind, who not only served as an advisor to the museum, but also
served as the Exhibit Chair, recruiting an exceptional slate of antiques dealers.
Old York’s care of its historic buildings received boosts from several sources. Grants from
the 1772 Foundation and the Maine Historic Records Advisory Board enabled us to replace
wood shingle roofs on John Hancock Warehouse and one façade of Emerson-Wilcox
House. The Wheeler Trust paid for landscaping around the new facility.
The Friends of Steedman Woods devoted a day of spirited labor to define trails and spread a
thick layer of woodchips on paths to protect tree roots. The regular annual attention has
helped mitigate the inevitable damage done to the forest by the sheer number of walkers.
Heavy use of the fragile shore land on either side of the Wiggley Bridge as unofficial beaches
is an ongoing concern the Friends looked for ways to address.
2008 Annual Report Page | 3
Our good friend and highly regarded colleague
Anne Poubeau resigned her position as
Education Director in 2008 to take a job outside
the museum field. She left a strong record of
program and audience development, not to
mention a legion of fans. Zoe Keefer-Norris
stepped up to head the department and quickly
began to put her imprint on a key job.
We began the year anticipating hiring a curator
to fill the position left vacant when Tom
Johnson left Old York in December 2007.
Notices on the websites of national
organizations drew a host of interested
applicants, at least ten of whom were highly
qualified and interesting. As the year passed,
financial uncertainty caused by a show house
secured late and outside York and so many
new and unpredictable aspects of operating a
new facility resulted in postponement of
restoring this full-time position.
During her tenure, Anne Poubeau expanded
the museum’s offerings and established the
Junior Docent program – a model program
for museums to engage teens.
The worldwide financial collapse during the last quarter of 2008 affected virtually every
individual, organization and business. To our relief, Old York did not see a drop in
membership or annual giving at year end. The permanently invested endowment and board
restricted funds on which we rely for over 40% of our annual operating income fell 26%, a
blow, for sure, but not as bad as the 40% or 50% losses many others suffered. We even met
this surprise setback from a position of strength, having added to our endowment via the
capital campaign.
Suffering less than we might have is still not the same as being in a position of strength. The
tepid market of the previous five years had resulted in a steady decline in endowment
income; we were drawing $70,000 or more than 10% less than in 2002 before the financial
crisis. Increasing income from other sources and reducing staff by one full-time position had
enabled us to survive that loss. Without a dramatic market turnaround, or a large addition to
our endowment, we face further reductions ahead. Like so many other nonprofits, Old York
risks reducing staff to a point that we cannot maintain core programs, leading to further
declines in support, and a downward spiral.
Old York has a more than 100-year history of resourceful operation and community
support. The next several years will be perhaps critical in maintaining the museums as we
know them. Finding a truly sustainable mode of operation is the major challenge facing this
generation of Old York leaders and constituents. With the help of our members and friends,
this too is a challenge that we can overcome.
