announcement
Air India crew will now say "Jai Hind"
after every inflight announcement. Air
India's director operations, Captain
Amitabh Singh, has issued a company
advisory saying "with immediate effect,
all are required to announce "Jai Hind"
at the end of every announcement
after a slight pause and with much
fervour". The decision is learnt to have
been taken at the behest of Air India
chairman Ashwani Lohani.
According to officials, the current
advisory is a "reminder" to the staff, in
line with the "mood of the nation".
"The captain of a flight should often
connect with passengers during the
journey and, at the end of first address,
using the words 'Jai Hind' would make
a tremendous impact," Lohani said in a
communication to his staff in May 2016.
Besides, Lohani in his
communication had also asked the
staff to be "courteous and polite" to
passengers and said wearing a smile
would be a "good thing".
Lohani had said, "The cabin crew
should greet the passengers while
emplaning and deplaning with a
'namaskaar' as was the tradition.
A smile on the face and conversing
sweetly and politely without an iota of
irritation would be a good thing."

KTC increases
airport bus service
to six trips a day
Panaji: Kadamba Transport
Corporation Ltd (KTCL) has increased
the frequency of its airport shuttle
buses to six trips a day.
This service, which entails ferrying
passengers to the Goa airport for the
minimal rate of Rs 100-Rs 150, had
generated positive response urging
KTC to amplify its number of trips for
this service.
“We have instructed each of the
depots in the state to make these buses
motorable every day. The bus service
is slowly gaining popularity among
tourists in Goa who avail of the airport
shuttle through online booking,” a KTC
official told TOI.
Sources said that buses scheduled to
travel in this service, see an average
of 25-30 passengers from Panaji and
Calangute. These are KTC’s long buses
with 40-45 seating for passengers that
travel from Calangute to Panaji to the
Goa airport and vice versa.
In Calangute, the buses are stationed
near a popular food chain restaurant.
After a brief stop at O Coqueiro
junction in Porvorim, the bus then
moves to the Panaji bus stand. These
buses depart
from the Goa to Pune/Mumbai bus stop
on platform 1 at the Panaji bus stand
and then proceed to the Goa airport in
Dabolim.
In addition to this, the KTC has also
sent a proposal to the state government
for procurement of 100 electric buses.
“The approval for electric buses is yet
to come from the government,” a KTC
official said.

Former additional director intelligence bureau Pranab Nanda on
Friday took over charge as the state’s Director General of Police
(DGP) from former DGP Muktesh Chander.
Nanda, was welcomed with the guard
of honour on his arrival at the police
headquarters at Panaji
Speaking to reporters, Nanda said Goa is
a global tourist destination and that safety
and well-being of the people, including
tourists, is of paramount importance.
“We will be looking after that,” he said.
Former DGP Chander has been
transferred to Delhi Nanda, a 1988-batch
Indian Police Service officer, has had
a long tenure with the intelligence
bureau and has served in many places,
including foreign countries.
He was in Goa as superintendent of
police in 1991-92.
Goa police on Friday saw off the
outgoing DGP with a ceremonial
parade at the police headquarters.
Chander, in his last address to Goa
police, said that during his tenure he tried
to clear pending cases and that, as of date,
only 1,500 cases remained to be cleared.
The former DGP said that a lot was
done a lot to reduce traffic violations. In
2015, police issued 3.8 lakh challans to
traffic violators, a number that went up
to 8 lakh in 2018, Chander said, adding
that action was taken against drunken
driving, triple riding, overspeeding and
riding without helmets, among others.
He credited the 21% drop in
accident numbers last year to strict
enforcement by police. Police of many
other states have studied the traffic
sentinel scheme he said.
“I hope they will also implement the
scheme in their respective states,” he
said, adding that the scheme should
be continued and, if required, changes
could be effected.
Stating that action was also against
drugs, Chander said that while in 2015,
61 narcotics-related cases were booked,
in 2018 the number increased to 222.
The former DGP said that there is a
58% increase in crimes committed by
foreign nationals.

Brazil Carnival 2019 kicks off
with stunning Street Parade
Dressed in intricate ensembles with
matching headpieces, coordinating
killer heels and outlandish hair and
make-up to match, the carnival queens
took to the streets of Rio de Janeiro and
Sao Paulo to take part in the festivities.

‘Store nation’s
urine, end urea

Gadkari
New Delhi, Mar 04: Lamenting that
his out-of-box proposals often find no
takers, Union minister Nitin Gadkari
Sunday voiced another such idea: make
urea from urine.
If it is done, India will not need to
import fertiliser, he claimed, addressing
a gathering of young innovators at the
Mayor Innovation Awards function of
the Nagpur Municipal Corporation.
Talking about importance of innovation,
he gave the example of how bio-fuels can
be extracted from natural waste.
Even human urine can be useful for
making a bio-fuel and it can also yield
ammonium sulfate and nitrogen, he said.
"I have asked for storage of urine at
airports. We import urea, but if we
start storing urine of entire country
then we will not need to import urea, so
much potential it has, and nothing will
be wasted," the minister said.
"Other people do not cooperate with
me because all my ideas are fantastic,"
the minister, known for his outspoken
ways, said.

'Clear History'
privacy feature

Facebook's long-awaited privacy tool --
"Clear History", which would let users
erase their information collected by
Facebook from third-party apps and
websites, is now scheduled to come out
later this year.
The information was announced
by David Wehner, Facebook's Chief
Financial Officer (CFO) at the Morgan
Stanley Technology, Media and
Telecom Conference being held in
Barcelona, the media reported.
The "Clear History" feature was first
announced in May 2018 and was described
as "a simple control to clear your
browsing history on Facebook -- what
you've clicked on, websites you've visited,
and so on", by CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
However, Wehner is concerned that
the feature would impact Facebook's
ability to target ads to audiences since
the social networking giant collects
data based on the user's location and
preference history.
"We want to make sure this works
the way it should for everyone on
Facebook, which is taking longer than
expected," BuzzFeed News quoted
Facebook as saying last week.
The testing of the tool is being
planned to begin somewhere between
March and May.
"Clear History" was proposed by
Zuckerberg in reaction to the company's
Cambridge Analytica scandal last
March and was announced publicly
when it just an idea, the media reported.

and have order of about 180 containers
of bio-fertiliser from the Dubai
government," the Union minister, who
controls Purti Group of Industries, said.

Abbey Bungalow, Lohaghat
Lohaghat, located in Champawat

infamous, bungalow on Abbot Hill,
known as the Abbey Bungalow,
where people have repeatedly sensed
mysterious activities. The said
bungalow is popular for its hideous
Mukti Kothri, where several people
were killed during mid-1900s.
After this bungalow was built, the
owner lived in it with his family for a
long time, and later on, donated this
place for building a hospital, wherein
the twist in the story comes.
Initially, the hospital used to stay
full of patients as it was run on
charity, while other features like clean
atmosphere and good medical facilities
also led to its popularity. However, the
reputation of this place changed after
a doctor joined the place. It is said that
he had the power to see into the future,
and predicted people’s’ deaths!
As such, when any new patient was
admitted into the hospital, the doctor
would pay him a visit and predict
whether he was going to live or die.
In fact, he would go to the lengths of
predicting the exact date when the patient
will supposedly die, and thus, before
those few days of the predicted said date,
the patient was sent to Mukti Kothri, a
special ward called room of freedom.
Locals believe that the doctor actually
had no special powers, but would kill
a patient every time just to prove his
prophecies were right. It is now believed
that the souls of those killed patients
have cursed this place and move around
the place. People don’t dare to venture
into this place after dark.

NEW DELHI: Connectivity between
India and Israel is all set to improve
with Israeli airline Arkia going to start
flights from Tel Aviv to Goa and Kochi
from September 28. At present, El Al
has a thrice-weekly Mumbai-Tel Aviv
nonstop and Air India has five times a
week direct on Delhi-Tel Aviv route.
According to Israel Tourism, Arkia
will operate its 220-seater single-aisle
Airbus A321 LR (long range) to fly
nonstop from Tel Aviv to Goa and Kochi.
“Arkia will fly once a week to Goa on
Tuesdays and twice a week to Kochi on
Mondays and Fridays. From October
27, 2019, the flight to the latter city will
move to Sundays and Thursdays. The
air travel will run all year round except
during the monsoon season in India,”
Israel Tourism said in a statement.
The increased connectivity comes as
Israel recorded 21% growth with 70,800
Indian tourist arrivals to the country in
2018, up almost 21% from 58,700
travellers in 2017. India is now the 12th
biggest source market for Israel.

heard ghosts moaning during the late
hours. Rumors have it that a loving
couple used to live in that house
around 70 years ago. One day, the wife
died and the husband too went missing.
Some believe that the husband might
have killed the wife and then himself,
and now their spirits linger around the
place.

JAMMU: Jammu and Kashmir’s
Sericulture and Tourism departments
have worked out a comprehensive plan
to introduce ‘Seri-Tourism’ as a joint
venture to promote both the sectors for
enhancing the livelihood opportunities,
a senior government official has said.
Under the first phase, model mulberry
gardens of highly improved Japanese
mulberry plants would be established
at the Jammu Tawi Golf Course (JTGC),
Sidhra and the Royal Springs Golf
Course (RSGC) in Srinagar during this
season, said Secretary, Tourism, Rigzin
Samphael at a meeting here.
Ornamental mulberry plants
would also be planted alongside the
approaches of these golf courses and
other locations in a systematic and
technical way, Samphael said.
The Department of Sericulture would
be providing all technical assistance for
plantation, upkeep and maintenance of
these mulberry plants.

10 strengths that make the
Rafale a key addition to
IAF’s fleet
India on Friday signed the much-awaited deal with France to buy
36 Rafale fighter jets worth Rs 59,000 crore (7.87 billion euro). The
deal is crucial for the Indian Air Force as it will.
Equipped with latest missiles and
weapon systems, Rafale, the "gust
of wind" and "burst of fire”, is well
known for its air supremacy, in-depth
and anti-ship strikes and nuclear
deterrence missions.
India on Friday signed the muchawaited
deal with France to buy 36
Rafale fighter jets worth Rs 59,000 crore
(7.87 billion euro).
The deal is crucial for the Indian Air
Force as it will give India a dominant
status in the air.
Here are some key factors that
put the jet’s strength into better
perspective:
1. Available in three main variants,
viz., the land-based Rafale C singleseat
and Rafale B twin-seat versions
and Rafale M single-seat carrier-based
versions, the Rafale has been used in
combat over Afghanistan, Libya, Mali,
Iraq and Syria.
2. The Rafale can touch speeds of Mach
1.8 (1,912 km/h) in high altitude and
Mach 1.1 (1,390 km/h) in low altitude.
The Rafale C, Rafale B and Rafale
M variants can carry loads of 9,850
kilograms, 10,300 kilograms and 10,600
kilograms respectively.
3. Great emphasis has been placed on
pilot workload minimisation across
all operations. Among the features
of the highly digitised cockpit is an
integrated direct voice input (DVI)
system, allowing a range of aircraft
functions to be controlled by spoken
voice commands, simplifying the pilot's
access to many of the controls.
4. The Rafale can carry more ordnance
than any of its competitors, hands
down. By contrast, the F-35 can carry
only 4 munitions (e.g. missiles) while
in its stealthy mode; the F/A-18E/F
Super Hornet and the F-16 can carry
only 11, and the Su-35 twelve.
5. The Rafale has the biggest gun on the
market, equally placed with Sukhoi
aircraft. It is laced with a hefty 30mm
GIAT gun firing incendiary rounds.
This makes the Rafale an excellent
choice for both air to air and air to
ground combat, as its 30mm rounds
would provide excellent support for
troops on the ground.
6. The Dassault Rafale is a relatively
small, light airplane, which makes
its wing loading ratio (the ratio of its
weight compared to its wingspace) just
306 kg/sq m, the second lowest ratio on
the market after the JAS-39 Gripen. Its
combat radius is also impressive – 1,852
kilometers, again, the second-best in
the market trailing only the F-15C/D.
The Rafale also has an excellent rate of
climb – 304 m per second, which means
the plane can climb to its service
ceiling (55,000 ft) in a minute.
7. Its speed of Mach 1.8, compared to
Mach 2 or more for most other fighters
could be one let down, but it fares
better when compared to its principal
competitor, the F-35, which is much
worse at just Mach 1.61. This, however,
is the product of a deliberate design
aimed to optimise the Rafale for close,
within visual range combat.
8. Rafale jets will come equipped with
state-of-the-art missiles such as the
Meteor and Scalp. With these missiles,
Rafale will be a big strategic weapon
under IAF’s umbrella. The Rafale
is equipped with an RBE2 passive
electronically scanned radar developed
by Thales and has both look down and
shoot down capabilities.
9. The Rafale engine features several
advances including a non-polluting
combustion chamber, single-crystal
turbine blades, powder metallurgy
disks, and technology to reduce radar
and infrared signatures.
10. According to Dassault, the Rafale
has sufficient low speed performance
to operate from STOBAR-configured
aircraft carriers, and can take off using
a ski-jump with no modifications.
However, industry sources have
highlighted the high cost its
operational cost, which hovers above
the Rs 11 lakh range for every flighthour.
33 per cent
professionals feel
technology hinders
work, family
commitments
According to the survey, 67
per cent of the India's working
professionals think about work,
even when they are not at work.
NEW DELHI: Around 33 per cent
of young professionals in India feel
technology is a major hindrance to work
and family commitments, said a Monster.
com survey, here on Wednesday.
Other hindrances were meetings,
calls and trainings after office hours
(18 per cent) and negative attitude of
supervisors towards work-life balance
(11 per cent), the report said.
"As opposed to the belief that technology
is a facilitator, one-third of the young
professionals find technology (laptops and
mobile phones) a hindrance in managing
family with work commitments," it said.
According to the survey, 67 per cent of the
India's working professionals think about
work, even when they are not at work.
"About half of the respondents in
relationships currently, confessed the lack
of work life balance makes them or their
partners irritable, ill-tempered," it said.
Over 2,000 working professionals in
the age group 18-55 years participated
in the survey, with maximum
responses received from people in 18-34
age bracket, according to Monster.com.

Genes may play role in
happy marriage
Happily married? Thank your genes,
say scientists who have identified a
genetic variation in the ‘love hormone’
oxytocin that influences long-term
happiness in a marriage.
Published in the journal PLOS
ONE, the study examined the role of a
genetic variation that affects oxytocin,
a hormone that plays a role in social
bonding. Lead author Joan Monin,
associate professor at the Yale School
of Public Health in the US, and her
team studied 178 married couples
ranging in age from 37 to 90 years old.
Each participant completed a survey
about their feelings of marital security
and satisfaction, and also provided a
saliva sample for genotyping.
The research team found that when at
least one partner had a genetic variation
known as the GG genotype within the
oxytocin gene receptor, the couple
reported significantly greater marital
satisfaction and feelings of security
within their marriage. Those couples had
greater satisfaction compared with other
couples who had different genotypes.
While the oxytocin receptor variant,
OXTR rs53576, has been previously
studied and linked to personality traits
such as emotional stability, empathy,
and sociability, the new study is
believed to be the first to examine its
role in marital satisfaction.
“This study shows that how we feel in
our close relationships is influenced by
more than just our shared experiences
with our partners over time,” said Monin.
“In marriage, people are also influenced
by their own and their partner’s genetic
predispositions,” she said.
The researchers also found that
people with the GG genotype reported
less anxious attachment in their
marriage, which also benefitted their
relationship. Anxious attachment is
a style of relationship insecurity that
develops from past experiences with
close family members and partners
over the life course, and is associated
with diminished self-worth, high
rejection sensitivity, and approvalseeking
behaviour, said Monin.
The researchers said that an individual’s
GG genotype and their partner’s GG
genotype together account for about 4%
of the variance of marital satisfaction.
Although this percentage is small, it
is a significant influence considering
other genetic and environmental
factors to which couples are exposed.
The findings may lead to future studies
to examine how couples’ genotypes
interact to influence relationship
outcomes over time. Another important
future direction for study will be to
examine how the OXTR rs53576 variant
interacts with specific negative and
positive relationship experiences to
influence relationship quality over
time in a large representative sample of
married couples, said Monin.

Michael Jackson has been dropped
from BBC Radio 2’s music playlists.
Ahead of the release of documentary
'Leaving Neverland', which details
new child sex abuse claims, it’s being
reported that the decision not to have
any of the King of Pop’s songs played
on the station was made last week.
According to The Times, the last
time a solo Jackson track was played
on Radio 2 was last Saturday (24
February). The BBC said: “We consider
each piece of music on its own merits
and decisions what we play on different
network are always made with relevant
audiences and context in mind.”
Leaving Neverland – a two-part
documentary – will air on HBO and
Channel 4 this week. Its subjects
Wade Robson and James Safechuck
accuse Jackson of grooming, sexually
assaulting and raping them as children.
Oprah Winfrey has taped an interview
with both Robson and Safechuck, as
well as director Dan Reed, which will be
broadcast in the US immediately after
the documentary airs on 4 March.
Speaking to CBS This Morning, Robson
told Gayle King he visited Jackson’s
Neverland Ranch in Santa Barbara
County as a child and thought it was “the
most magical thing” he had ever seen.
The Jackson estate has denounced
the documentary, saying the accusers
“have provided no independent
evidence and absolutely no proof in
support of their accusations.”
Robson said Jackson invited him to
stay over, first with his family, then by
himself.
“Within either the first or second
night of Michael and I being alone
at Neverland, the nights started
changing,” he said.
“One of the ways I remember it
starting is Michael sort of starting to
touch my legs and touch my crotch
over my pants. It performed to him
performing oral sex on me, him showing
me how to perform oral sex on him.”

reports that legendary film director
Steven Spielberg was campaigning to
exclude the streaming service from
eligibility at future Oscars ceremonies.
Spielberg was planning to ask for
a rule change that would prevent
streaming services like Netflix, Hulu
and Amazon from competing in the
Oscars at an upcoming annual board of
governors meeting at the Academy of
Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, The
Los Angeles Times reported.
Spielberg wants films on streaming
services to compete at the Emmy
Awards rather than the Oscars,
according to IndieWire, which first
reported Spielberg's stance.
“Steven feels strongly about the
difference between the streaming and
theatrical situation,” a spokesperson
for Amblin, Spielberg's production
company, told IndieWire.

"We are stereotyping people, that's
probably the most dangerous sign. It
shouldn't happen. But that's the way

Six artists from two cities - busy,
crowded Ahmedabad and the tiny
metropolitan state of Goa come together
in this multi-threaded exhibition.
Says Samira Sheth, “The universal

and regeneration of ideas and ways of
expression lead to a constantly changing
artistic landscape. Multiple creative

Six artists from Ahmedabad and Goa
tell their stories through diverse media
– using watercolour, oil, colour pencil,
thread and even newsprint.
Alpesh J Dave from Ahmedabad pays
tribute to iconic artists, in thread images
of Dali, Rene Magritte and Jackson
Pollock. In another small format work
he leaves threads hanging to hint at
the constantly evolving and therefore
unfinished state of an artist’s ideas.
Goan artist Liesl Cotta De Souza also
uses thread to paint. Her subject is
women as they work and play. Layered in
colour, perspective and emotion, these are
everyday stories of struggle and pleasure
told through embroidery on textile.
Manish Modi from Ahmedabad takes
a childhood spent with newsprint, his
father had a newspaper agency and
Manish even sold the occasional paper, to
paint on the daily medium of newspaper.
Animals feature in Ahmedabad based
Purvi Parmar’s colour pen and acrylic
paintings. The young artist creates space
for her ‘self’ in imagined worlds atop the
bustling cityscape of Ahmedabad. She
images sheep, a couple of slender deer
and a peacock in full form as central
figures in these fantastical universes
created entirely by her.
Laila Vaziralli from Goa finds
inspiration in nature too with a series
of dreamy watercolours. Her women
protagonists play with the rain and
reclaim what is rightfully theirs (and
ours too) – a free and healthy natural
environment to just ‘be’ in?
As guardians and custodians
of nature, humanity is in need
of protection itself. Ideas of the
sacred abound in Sonia Rodrigues
Sabharwal’s portraits of Gods and
Goddesses of Goa in mixed media
works on canvas. Strongly rooted in
Goa, Sonia invokes the spirit of its
deities for succor.
With their highly individualistic
thought process, each artist presents

It's not cool to
drink on Beaches
and public places
in Goa anymore
We run to Goa whenever we want to
lead a liberated few days without a
care in the world. It’s a place to party,
to laze around on the beaches wearing
shorts and sarongs, with a beer in
hand. Or not. Yes, you heard that right.
Goa is the same except you cannot
drink on the beaches anymore. If you
do, you’ll either have to pay a fine of Rs
2,000 or land up in jail for up to three
months. This development came after
an amendment to the Registration of
Tourist Trade Act was approved by the
state cabinet recently.
Goa’s tourism minister Manohar
Ajgaonkar says that this amendment is
not without reason. He says the reason
for banning beer on the beach is not
alcohol consumption, but the fact that
people misbehave and break bottles on
the beach that has a deadly potential to
harm humans and marine life. He said
that cooking food in the open has also
been banned, listing that the offenders
in groups can also be fined upto Rs
10,000.
The footfall in the state had dipped in
the previous years; and now such an
amendment will land an even heavy
blow to the tourism industry. The state
has not just banned drinking on the
beaches, but in public places as well.
Ajgaonkar had mentioned earlier that
once the amendments come into force
after they are passed in the Assembly,
photographs of offenders will be sent
across to the Tourism Ministry on a
special phone number, following which
action would be taken in 12 hours.
The law will also charge penalties
for shacks that allow guests to carry
bottles of liquor with them. However,
it’s okay as long as you are drinking
and eating inside the shack or in a bar,
where you will not be questioned at all.

backlash after he made a joke last week

crunch in the airline and subsequent
failure to pay rentals to various lessors.

In a bid to provide seamless urban
mobility to commuters across the
country, the Centre on March 4
launched India’s first indigenouslydeveloped
National Common Mobility
Card (NCMC).
Dubbed as 'One Nation-One Card',
the inter-operable transport card
would allow holders to pay for their
bus travel, toll taxes, parking charges,
retail shopping and withdraw cash.
With this “one-of-its-kind” card,
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said
during the launch, the country is “no
longer required to be dependent on
foreign technology.”
"Now, we have this 'Made in India'
card. Only a select few countries have
this technology of 'One Nation One
Card'," PM Modi added.
Here are the key point you need to
know about the ‘One Nation One
Card’:
• The mobility card can be issued in the
form of debit, credit or prepaid card of
a partner bank.
• The card is similar to any RuPay
debit/credit card, which will be
available with more than 25 banks,
including the State Bank of India (SBI).
• The card can be used for making
payments across all segments including
metro, bus, suburban railways, smart
city and retail shopping.
• The card can also be used for paying
at toll plazas and for parking.
• The card offers cashback on bill
payments and more than thousand
other offers.
• A cardholder can also avail 5 percent
cash back at ATMs and 10 percent
cash back at merchant outlets while
travelling abroad.
• It is supported by indigenously
developed Automatic Fare Collection
