‘How Might We’ activity
11 ‘How Might We’ statements reframed problems into opportunities and solutions.
Objective: collaborative solution ideation for current challenges The Society is facing.
___
Value
Research led
The statements represented challenges the Future Friendly team uncovered during their research
and engagement with St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Co-design
This activity enabled each Congress participant to help design The Society’s future initiatives as a
means to solve current challenges. Self-selection for the ‘How Might We’ (HMW) encouraged
collaboration within The Society and diversity (age, location, experience and association with The
Society) amongst the group participants.
___
Method
1. Individuals chose from 11 HMW statements by signing up to be part of the group they were
more passionate about.
2. Each group assembled and unpacked their HMW problem statement in group discussion.
3. Ideation in 3 phases:
a. Individual, fast- participants spent time individually coming up with solutions to their
HMW
b. Pairs - Individuals got into pairs and shared their ideas, gave each other feedback.
Pairs then came up with 3 new ideas together, using a combination of their original
ideas and new ideas they formed together
c. HMW group - groups of approximately 10 participants (focused on the same HMW)
came together to share their pair’s ideas. The group then came up with 3 new ideas
using the ‘Opportunity Poster’ worksheet template.
4. Groups presented their ‘Opportunity Poster’ to the Congress over dinner.
5. Groups turned one of their ideas from their ‘Opportunity Poster’ into an ‘Idea Blueprint’
(template) which required more granular detail with questions around who the idea benefits,
what traits it has and more.
6. Neighbouring groups shared feedback on one another’s ‘Idea Blueprint’ using the ‘Rose,
Thorn, Bud’ worksheet template.
7. Groups refined their Idea Blueprint based on their feedback.
