Pyroplex® Linear Gap Seal is an elastomeric
foam/intumescent strip construction intended for use as
an expansion joint filler. They are suitable for use on
concrete, masonry and porous concrete wall
constructions as well as steel girders and concrete floor
constructions.
Pyroplex® Linear Gap Seal is fire rated up to 2 hours and
is available in seven standard sizes which are suitable for
gaps up to 150mm.
Pyroplex® Linear Gap Seal are tested to BS476 Part
20:1987 and many other International Standards.

resistance tests to confirm the suitability of the product and to
demonstrate product compliance by utilising BS476: Part 20
1987 and other international standards.

installation instructions
1. The wall or floor must be of solid construction. The Linear Gap
Seal selected must be the correct size for the gap to be filled.
2. Simply push fit the Linear Gap Seal into position.

finishing.

Store dry and in a cool place (not above 35°C) and ensure
sufficient ventilation.

Pyroplex® Jargon Buster
At Pyroplex, in response to feedback from our customers

references used within the passive fire protection industry,

detail. Throughout our datasheets we include, where
possible, our jargon buster panels to help clarify recurring
terms and references.
What are BS references, with particular reference to
BS476?
BSI British Standards is a component of the UK’s National
Standards Body (NSB). It represents UK economic and social
interests across all of the European and International
Standards Organisations and through the development of
business information solutions for British Organisations of
all sectors and sizes.
Standards help to make life simpler and to increase the
reliability and the effectiveness of many goods and services
we use. They are intended to be aspirational rather than
general practice. Although the standards are designed as
voluntary, laws and regulations may refer to certain
standards and make compliance with them compulsory.
There are five types of British Standards:
• Specifications
• Methods
• Guides
• Vocabularies
• Codes of Practice
These all carry the prefix BS and all have the same status
and authority.
There is a wide range of BS relating to fire safety
regulations. One area of fire safety is BS476 which is
concerned with fire testing on building materials and
structures.
When the tests are undertaken the results of the tests are
expressed as a number of minutes for each of the following
characteristics:
• Stability
• Integrity
• Insulation

Field of Application
The Pyroplex range of Linear gap Seals have been specifically
designed to reinstate the fire resistance of a wall or floor that has
been provided with movement joint. The system is designed to
expand under fire conditions to restrict the passage of fire
through the movement joint to provide and maintain fire
resistance barrier up to 2 hours.
Service Penetrations
The Pyroplex range of Linear gap Seals are not suitable for use on
penetrating services, such as soil, waste and drainage applications.
Structural Constructions
The wall or floor which has been provided with movement joint
must have density range of between 450 to 2300kg/m3 and have a
minimum thickness of not less than 150mm. The movement joint,
must be clean and free from residual debris.
Test Reports
Pyroplex® have carried out numerous independent fire resistance
tests to confirm the suitability of the product and to demonstrate
product compliance by utilising BS476: Part 20 1987 and other
international standards. The product complies with Certificate
TS40 under Certificate No. CF598.

Specifications of Linear Gap Seals
The foam is a open cellular elastomeric foam exhibits a high
compression/deflection recovery under sustained compression.
The foam achieves a high classification to reaction to fire and does
not support a flame or develop burning droplets.
Intumescent Material
The intumescent material is based upon an expandable graphite,
which when heated expands multi-directionally generating high
pressure to fill the cavity of the movement joint. The expanded
graphite exhibits sufficient char to restrict the passage of fire
through the movement joint for a period of 2 hours fire resistance.
Installation Guidance Notes
Check the likely direction of the fire, in some cases it maybe
necessary to install two seals to achieve other Building
Regulations such as acoustic or air tightness. This information can
be obtained from the architect, or specifier or Building Control
officer or local Building Regulations.
1. Measure the movement joint to establish seal type required.
2. Ensure that the joint detail is free from building debris,
which could interfere with the installation process.
3. Remove the seal from its immediate packaging and
commence to install the seal within the joint, by compressing
and publish the seal into the cavity. Care should be taken to
during installation as to not tear the seal.

4. The seal can be installed flush, centrally positioned within
the wall or floor to achieve 2 hours fire resistance. However,
it maybe necessary to fill the cavity for decoration purposes
any backing materials or finishing materials used shall have
a fire resistance classification equal to that of the seal.
5. For continuos joints, it is important to ensure the seal is
butted and no gaps between the two adjacent seals.
6. Install seals until the movement joint is sealed.

Maintenance and Installation Records
Since the product is not subject to routine and replacement
programmes, Pyroplex® recommend that all firestopping materials
are checked on a regular basis to ensure that the product remains
integral. Replace and fit any damaged components to reinstate
the fire resistance.
Product Guarantee
Providing the product is installed in accordance with the
requirements of the guidance document the product is
guaranteed for a period of 10 years.
Quality Approval
Pyroplex® Limited has a Quality Management System that meets

Composition/Information on Ingredients
Chemical Nature: Flexible composite of thermoplastic
containing intercalated graphite and fire retardant
polyurethane foam.

Principle Hazards: Not subject to degree of hazardous
substances.
First Aid Measures
On Skin Contact: Wash thoroughly with soap and water
On Contact with Eyes: Wash for at least 15 minutes under
running water with eyelids held open, consult an eye specialist.
On Ingestion: Rinse mouth immediately, do not induce
vomiting, and seek immediate medical attention.
If inhaled: Not applicable in solid state.
Fire Fighting Measures
Suitable Extinguishing Media: All standard fire fighting media.
