airport from June 

DABOLIM: Come June, and private 

vehicles will no longer face a 

harrowing time while dropping or 

picking up their family members 

and friends at the Goa International 

Airport, Dabolim, as the Airports 

Authority of India (AAI) has decided to 

withdraw the parking, entry or access 

fee in its new vehicle parking policy. 

The new policy, which will be rolled out 

nationally in June, is exactly opposite of 

the current one. Except for commercial 

vehicles approaching the arrivals, 

vehicles going to the pick-up and drop 

lanes will not be charged any fee. 

“By June we will go for the new 

parking policy which will be 

completely automated,” Goa airport 

director Bhupesh C H Negi told TOI. 

‘Vehicles parked for long periods will 

be penalised’ 

“The time limit will be removed, but 

a heavy penalty will be imposed on 

vehicles that are parked for long periods. 

The penalty has yet to be decided.” 

Negi said, no vehicles, including taxis 

and resort coaches, would be allowed to 

park in front of the airport terminal as 

is the practice currently. 

“Parking will be at designated areas 

and there will be a 50% reduction in 

parking fees,” said the director. 

Drink Cashew Feni, Don't 

Do Drugs - Azgaonkar 

Tourism Minister also says Carnival organised to showcase 

our Culture and not drink on the roads 

Tourists visiting Goa should drink the 

local alcoholic brew-- cashew feni-- rather 

than indulge in drugs, Goa Tourism 

Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar said. 

"We do not want to introduce drugs 

because of EDM (Electronic Dance 

Music) festivals. I have instructed 

police that there should not be any 

chaos at these events. Enjoy the music, 

drink cashew feni, but do not indulge 

in drugs," Mr Ajgaonkar told a press 

conference in Panaji. 

Feni is a popular local liquor distilled 

from the cashew fruit. 

Mr Ajgaonkar said that while it 

was the duty of the state Tourism 

Department to treat tourists visiting 

Goa with the spirit of 'Atithi Devo 

Bhava', the law of the land will apply to 

both locals as well as tourists in case of 

violation. 

"It is our duty to provide them with 

safety and security. But anyone 

should not come here and create 

chaos," he said. 

Mr Ajgaonkar said the Tourism 

Department has begun the process 

of cracking down on littering and 

drinking of alcohol on beaches, which 

was formally banned by the state 

legislative assembly in January. 

"If someone is found drinking and 

littering alcohol bottles on the beach, 

they will be fined Rs.2,000. If people are 

breaking the law in groups, the fine 

will be Rs. 10,000. 

"We will be strict if hawkers and 

beggars hassle tourists on beaches," Mr 

Ajgaonkar said. 

Further, Azgaonkar said the Carnival 

is organised to showcase the the 

culture of the state and that people 

should not use it as an opportunity to 

drink alcohol on the roads. 

“There is no ban on drinking alcohol 

during Carnival. Anybody can drink, 

but in their house or in a restaurant. 

Carnival is not organised to facilitate 

people to consume alcohol on roads. 

It is held to showcase Goa’s culture,” 

Azgaonkar said. 

In the last budget session of the state 

legislative Assembly, lawmakers 

amended the Goa Tourist Place 

(Protection and Maintenance) Act, 

2001, which prohibits cooking, 

drinking alcohol and littering public 

areas, including beaches. 

Along with the Carnival, Goa tourism 

will also present the Food and Lifestyle 

Festival, The Grape Escapade, from 

February 28 at D B Bandodkar 

Grounds at Campal in Panaji. The 

festival will conclude on March 3.

Russia President 

Vladimir Putin asks 

his government to 

back Pop Music 

Moscow, Feb 24: Russian President 

Vladimir Putin has ordered his 

administration to support popular 

music after young independent artists 

were asked to cancel their shown 

in various cities of the country, the 

Moscow Times reported. 

In December last year, Putin told his 

officials to put a control on rap music 

instead of banning it for he felt such 

extreme reaction will only make it 

more popular. He said this following a 

brief arrest of a popular rap artiste. 

This week, the 66-year-old instructed 

his deputy chief of staff Sergei 

Kiriyenko to submit a list of "priority 

actions" to support music and visual 

arts by September 1. 

"Organize a discussion with members 

of the expert community and expert 

groups on forms of state support 

for contemporary popular music, 

including genres in demand among the 

youth," the directive read. 

In 2017, the Opposition accused the 

Kremlin of using pop and rap music 

videos to discourage Russian youths from 

taking part in anti-corruption protests. 

Putin, who is serving his fourth and 

final presidential term, felt that rap 

music is based on three pillars of sex, 

drugs and protest and of the three, 

he was particularly worried with the 

drugs, considering it as a way to the 

country's degradation. 

Single emergency 

helpline number ‘112’ 

launched in India 

As US and many other developed 

countries have, India too launched 

a pan-India service of the single 

emergency helpline number ‘112’. Union 

Home Minister Rajnath Singh launched 

the service of the single emergency 

helpline number ‘112’ for immediate 

assistance services from police (100), 

fire (101), health (108) and women (1090). 

Apart from emergency response 

service, the government also launched 

Investigation Tracking System for 

Sexual Offences (ITSSO) along with the 

safe city implementation monitoring 

portal to improve women safety 

situation in the country. 

PM Narendra Modi receives 

Seoul Peace Prize for 2018 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 

February 22 received the prestigious 

Seoul Peace Prize for 2018 for his 

contribution to international cooperation 

and fostering global economic growth. 

The award was presented to him by the 

Seoul Peace Prize Foundation at a grand 

ceremony here. A short film on the life 

and achievements of Prime Minister 

Modi was also screened at the event. 

While conferring the award on Modi, 

the award committee recognised his 

contribution to the growth of Indian and 

global economies, crediting 'Modinomics' 

for reducing social and economic 

disparity between the rich and the poor.

in Indonesia 

What a bee! Lost to the science since 

1981, the world’s largest bee (Megachile 

pluto) has been rediscovered on an 

island in Indonesia. 

Its non-scientific name is Wallace’s 

giant bee, named for British 

entomologist Alfred Russel Wallace, codiscoverer 

of the theory of evolution by 

natural selection … and giant it is! With 

a 2.5 inch wingspan, this beast of a bee 

towers over its more familiar brethren. 

The female is pictured here — males of 

the species are smaller, something not 

uncommon for insect species. 

The bees make homes for themselves 

inside termite nests, walling themselves 

off from the insects with resin and 

other materials. Their large jaws come 

in handy here, put to use scraping the 

resin from trees to be rolled into balls 

and flown back to their nests.

Twitter has 10 days 

to reply to house 

panel’s unanswered 

questions 

The Parliamentary Committee on 

Information Technology on Monday, 25 

February, asked Twitter to ensure that the 

upcoming Lok Sabha elections are “not 

undermined and influenced by foreign 

entities” – and to work “in real time with 

Election Commission to address issues.” 

According to ANI, Anurag Thakur, 

the BJP MP who’s chairing the panel, 

read out a personal letter addressed to 

him by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and 

allowed Colin Crowell, Vice President 

and Global Policy Head, to appear. 

He then granted 10 days to Dorsey to 

respond in writing to questions that 

remained unanswered. Thakur also 

indicated that they may be summoned 

again before the committee. 

In Dorsey’s absence, Twitter was 

represented by Crowell who addressed 

the 31-member IT panel. The committee 

had summoned Dorsey on 11 February 

to question him on “safeguarding 

citizen rights on social/online news 

media platforms.” 

The 31-member committee currently 

has 21 members from the Lok Sabha 

and 10 members from the Rajya Sabha. 

At present, it comprises 13 MPs of the 

BJP, including Thakur and LK Advani, 

and five Congress MPs. 

The IT Committee has also summoned 

representatives of Facebook, Instagram 

and WhatsApp on 6 March to hear 

their views on the same subject of 

‘safeguarding citizens’ rights on social 

media platforms’.

Music Therapy Day 

Listening to a song you love makes you feel good, right? In a very 

basic way, that’s what music therapy is and how it can help. 

Music therapy involves trained 

professionals playing music to support 

health and well-being, using songs 

to meet emotional, communicative, 

physical, social and spiritual needs. 

It can involve playing instruments, 

drumming or writing songs; it’s 

appropriate for people of all ages and 

cognitive abilities and can not only 

make people feel better, stronger and 

less stress, it can help distract the 

brain and bring a better sense of calm. 

Music therapy has been shown 

to be an effective treatment for 

people suffering from Parkinson’s 

or living with Alzheimer’s. Studies 

and anecdotal evidence have found 

situations in which people with 

memory issues, brain injuries, 

dementia or Alzheimer’s might be 

struggling to find a word or phrase but 

have no trouble singing or playing an 

entire song from their younger days. 

March 1 is World Music Therapy 

Day, designed to shine a light on music 

therapists and the ability of music to 

make life better and more fulfilling. 

“Music therapists use various active 

and receptive intervention techniques 

according to the needs and preferences 

of the individuals with whom they 

work,” the Canadian Association of 

Music Therapists says. 

“These techniques include, but are 

not limited to, the following: Singing 

is a therapeutic tool that assists in the 

development of articulation, rhythm 

and breath control. Singing in a group 

setting can improve social skills and 

foster a greater awareness of others. 

For those with dementia, singing 

can encourage reminiscence and 

discussions of the past, while reducing 

anxiety and fear. For individuals with 

compromised breathing, singing can 

improve oxygen saturation rates. 

For individuals who have difficulty 

speaking following a stroke, music may 

stimulate the language centres in the 

brain promoting the ability to sing.” 

It’s more than just singing, though: 

playing instruments can improve 

motor skills and build cooperation and 

attention practices; activities based in 

rhythm can boost a person’s range of 

motion and joint agility; improvising 

can be a non-judgmental activity for 

expressing thoughts and feelings through 

sounds and noises; the list goes on. 

“Where words fail or emotions are 

too hard to express, music can fill the 

void,” CAMT says.

PM dedicates National War Memorial to the nation 

The National War Memorial and National War Museum near India Gate will be a tribute to over 25,942 soldiers 

who sacrificed their lives for the country after Independence. 

Commenting on the National War 

Memorial, Lieutenant General PS 

Rajeshwar earlier said that it is a 

tribute to the bravest soldiers who 

fought for the country. "It epitomizes 

a rich saga of courage, valour and 

selfless sacrifice made by our heroes in 

the rich military tradition," he added. 

Spread over an area of approximately 

40 acres, the memorial comprises four 

concentric circles, namely– the ‘Amar 

Chakra, the Veerta Chakra, the ‘Tyag 

Chakra’ and the ‘Rakshak Chakra’ 

with names of 25,942 soldiers inscribed 

in golden letters on granite tablets.

awardees have also been installed at 

the Param Yoddha Sthal and includes 

those of three living awardees.

AEW&C: Airborne early warning 

and control (AEW&C) system is a 

multisensor developed by DRDO on a 

carrier jet which provides an airborne

the first native AEW system developed 

by DRDO and CAB. It was completely 

developed and built using the native 

technology platform, EMB-145. Mission 

system control (MSC) is the brain of 

the AEW&C system, as it incorporates 

all the data from sensors and other 

systems to control the whole system. 

It assesses threats using data received 

from the on-board sensors and other 

sources, and presents the Air Situation 

Picture (ASP). 

The Department of Telecommunications 

(DoT) has opened a channel allowing 

people to complain against offensive and 

vulgar messages received on WhatsApp, 

a senior government official said Friday. 

“If anyone is receiving abusive/ 

offensive/death threats/ vulgar 

WhatsApp messages, please send 

screenshots of the message along with 

the mobile numbers at ccaddn-dot@nic. 

in,” telecom department’s controller 

of communications Ashish Joshi said 

in a tweet. “We will take it up with the 

telecom operators and police heads for 

necessary action,” he added. 

The development comes in light of 

several journalists receiving abusive 

messages on WhatsApp. Following 

complaints by public figures, the 

DoT, on Tuesday, shot off a missive 

to telecom operators asking them to 

take immediate action against their 

subscribers sending such messages 

given that the licensing conditions of the 

service providers prohibited carriage of 

objectionable, obscene or unauthorised 

content in any form on the network. 

The Centre had also suggested telecom 

operators to open a dedicated call 

centre or helpline to receive complaints 

against such messages given that the 

onus is also on the operators to ensure 

that their networks are not used for 

abusive messages.

Heron: The IAI Heron (Machatz-1) 

is a medium-altitude long-endurance 

unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) 

developed by the Malat (UAV) division 

of Israel Aerospace Industries. It is 

capable of Medium Altitude Long 

Endurance (MALE) operations of up 

to 52 hours' duration at up to 10.5 km 

(35,000 ft). The Heron navigates using 

an internal GPS navigation device, and 

either a pre-programmed flight profile 

(in which case the system is fully 

autonomous from takeoff to landing), 

manual override from a ground control 

station, or a combination of both. It can 

autonomously return to base and land 

in case of lost communication with the 

ground station. The system has fully 

automatic launch and recovery (ALR) 

and all-weather capabilities. 

Harpy: Another product of Israel, it 

is used by Indian armed forces. It can 

carry explosive as well as can destroy 

radar system. The Harpy is designed to 

attack radar systems and is optimised 

for the SEAD role. It carries a high 

explosive warhead. The Harpy has 

Nishant: The DRDO Nishant 

is an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle 

(UAV) developed by India's ADE 

(Aeronautical Development 

Establishment), a branch of DRDO 

(Defence Research and Development 

Organisation) for the Indian Armed 

Forces. The Nishant UAV is primarily 

tasked with intelligence gathering 

over enemy territory and also for 

reconnaissance, training, surveillance, 

target designation, artillery fire 

correction, damage assessment, 

ELINT and SIGINT. The UAV has an 

endurance of four hours and thirty 

minutes. Nishant has completed 

development phase and user trials. 

Rustom: It is an unnamed combat 

air vehicle, a production of DRDO 

dedicated to all three services of Indian 

armed forces. The project is under 

progress and some top private players 

in the defence field are bidding for 

its manufacturing deal. This UAV 

has come with wheels which makes 

its take-off and landing a bit ahead of 

Nishant.

Restaurants can no longer 

reuse cooking oil: FSSAI 

The Food Safety and Standards 

Authority of India (FSSAI) has 

announced that restaurants will no 

longer be able to reuse cooking oil 

multiple times. The new restriction, 

which will go into effect from March 3, 

will prohibit reusing cooking oil more 

than 3 times by a restaurant or eatery. 

Noting that ‘repeated frying of oil 

leads to changes in physiochemical, 

nutritional, and sensory properties 

of edible oil,’ the FSSAI has sought 

to regulate the quality of oil that food 

operators use on a daily basis. 

It is vital to understand that oil 

becomes too acidic when reused 

multiple times, and after a certain 

point, the oil becomes unsafe for 

consumption. When oil is repeatedly 

used, the compounds that are formed 

are called Total Polar Compounds 

(TPCs), and a high rate of TPCs 

can have a negative effect on a 

person's health. Hypertension, liver 

disease, increased cholesterol and 

atherosclerosis are some of the health 

risks posed by consuming such oil. 

"To ensure that such used cooking 

oil is neither directly used in the food 

preparation nor re-enters the food chain, 

it has been decided that all Food Business 

Operators whose consumption of edible 

oils for frying is more than 50 litres per 

day shall maintain records and dispose 

used cooking oil to agencies authorised 

by the Food Safety and Standards 

Authority of India or Commissioner of 

Food Safety of States/UTs from time to 

time,” the circular continues. 

The FSSAI has also stated that any 

cooking oil found to have Total Polar 

Compounds of more than 25 percent 

cannot be “topped up with fresh oil.” 

Restaurants and eateries must 

comply with these new rules before 

March 3. 

Puma pips rivals, 

becomes top 

sportswear brand 

in India 

Puma, the third-largest sportswear 

manufacturer in the world, has reported 

sales of Rs 1,157 crore for the 12-month 

period ending December 2018 against Rs 

958 crore reported in the year ago period. 

The company follows the January- 

December calendar year, while its Nike, 

Adidas, Skechers and Reebok go by the 

April-March financial year (FY) cycle. 

In FY 2017-18, Puma’s compatriot Adidas 

had registered sales of Rs 1,132 crore, up 

from Rs 1,100 crore reported in FY 2016-17. 

During the same period, American 

sportswear giant Nike reported sales 

of Rs 828 crore against Rs 807 crore 

reported in the previous fiscal. 

Reebok, which is owned by Adidas, 

saw its sales drop from Rs 416 crore in 

FY 2016-17 to Rs 391 crore in FY 2017-18. 

Another American brand Skechers, 

which is relatively new in the Indian 

market, reported sales of Rs 440 crore 

in FY 2018-19, up from Rs 282 crore 

reported in FY2016-17. 

“We are making strong progress in 

both sports performance and sport style 

categories,” Puma India Managing Director 

Abhishek Ganguly was quoted as saying. 

Interestingly, India is the only 

country where Puma’s sales have 

crossed the sales of other sportswear 

giants such as Adidas and Nike.

fitness trends.

Big three music 

labels bring in 

$19 million per 

day via music 

streaming 

A recent report is stating that Sony, 

Universal and Warner’s music labels 

are taking in around $19 million USD 

per day from music streaming revenues. 

Throughout 2018, Sony, Warner and 

Universal’s parent company Vivendi 

brought in $6.9 billion USD total for all 

of their streaming music properties. 

That’s a total of $1.6 billion more than 

the companies made from streaming in 

2017, according to the Music Business 

Worldwide report. 

During 2018, music streaming made 

up around half of the big three music 

labels’ revenue, claims the report. 

It’s likely that the market will 

grow since both Apple Music and 

Spotify have been sharing increasing 

subscriber counts every year or so. 

Compared to 2016, when the 

companies were getting around a third 

of their revenue from streaming music, 

it seems like the streaming market is 

still growing considerably. 

Ideally, as the streaming industry 

gets bigger, more artists will be able 

to strike deals that net them a larger 

percentage of their music’s profits. 

As streaming gets more significant, 

it seems like streaming platform 

companies might even start moving in 

on the record label’s territory to offer 

musicians better deals. Spotify has 

also been beta testing a feature that 

allows artists to upload their own music 

without using a record label.

started sharing a music video that was 

initially released by the BJP before the

The video titled 'Banda Apna Sahi 

Hai' seems to be inspired from the

Time Ayega' from the Ranveer Singh- 

Alia Bhatt starrer 'Gully Boy' which 

released on Feb 14. In it, a musician 

can be seen rapping about Modi and 

singing his praises. 

The 2.38-minutes-long video featured

out in rap format all the achievements 

of the BJP government since.

song apart from the government's work

Sitharaman 

VASCO: Outlining the Centre’s vision 

for defence public sector units (DPSUs), 

defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman 

on Thursday urged DPSUs to tap the 

potential for export of military equipment, 

including warships, while continuing to 

cater to the needs of the Indian Armed 

Forces.Sitharaman said, southeast Asian 

countries, with whom India has friendly 

bilateral ties, were keen to purchase 

military equipment from India instead 

of turning to western defence contractors. 

“I want not just Goa Shipyard, but 

every defence public sector unit to 

look at themselves as manufacturers of 

international class. Don’t just depend 

on your captive market which is the

Goa’s UCC’ - Lekhi 

MARGAO: BJP national spokesperson 

Meenakshi Lekhi on Monday urged 

the youth members of the party to 

propagate the idea of the Uniform Civil 

Code (UCC) of Goa and demand that the 

law be adopted in all other states. 

Pointing out that people from 

different faiths in Goa, while following 

their respective religions, are bound 

by the same law in social life, Lekhi 

termed the practice as “fantastic”. 

“That’s the model I want every state 

to adopt. I wish the whole country 

follows this example of Goa, I wish 

the whole country becomes like Goa, 

thinks like Goa,” she said. 

Lekhi made these observations 

while interacting with members of the

She was replying to a query posed by

Sitharaman asked GSL to prepare an 

export blueprint which would make the 

Vasco-based shipyard competitive in the 

global defence manufacturing sector. 

“Goa Shipyard has proved that they 

are as good as private sector and it 

proves the public sector does not have 

to be one step lower, does not require 

patronage, but has to be treated on par 

with everybody else,” she said. 

The minister’s statements are in line 

with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 

Make in India initiative. 

Ghumot to be 

Goa’s heritage 

instrument 

The Art and Culture Minister of Goa, 

Govind Gaude has announced that 

Ghumot, an indigenous earthen drum will 

soon be notified as a heritage instrument 

of Goa. Ghumot is an indigenous 

earthen drum fashioned as a designed 

clay pot, with the skin of the monitor 

lizard stretched taut across the pot’s 

mouth, forming a drumhead. Ghumot is 

a percussion instrument widely played 

during Ganesh Chaturthi Aarties. 

The skin of monitor lizard is one of 

the key components of the Ghumot. 

Since the monitor lizard was classified 

as an endangered wildlife species and 

was listed in Schedule I of the Wildlife 

(Protection) Act 1972, Ghumot was 

banned by the Forest Department of Goa. 

In recent years attempts were made 

to revive the heritage instrument 

of Goa by replacing monitor lizard 

skin with the skin of a she-goat. This 

revival had spiked the interests about 

the instrument. Taking forward the 

efforts to conserve the heritage musical 

instrument the government of Goa is 

taking steps to declare Ghumot as the 

heritage musical instrument of Goa. 

New Zuari bridge to use 

45,614km of steel wires 

Zuari bridge model 

PANAJI: The new Zuari eight-lane 

bridge project is not only unique 

because, once ready, it will be the widest 

cable-stayed bridge in the country, it is 

set to break another record. The linear 

length of the high tensile steel wires 

used for the bridge project exceeds the 

circumference of earth. 

“While 45,614km of high tensile steel 

wires are being used to hold the spans of 

the bridge together, it is around 5,000km 

more than the circumference of the 

earth. The high tensile steel wires used 

in the Bandra-Worli sea link at around 

37,000km were earlier celebrated for 

matching the earth’s circumference,” 

said Atul Joshi of Dilip Buildcon Ltd, 

the Bhopal-based contractors building 

the new Zuari bridge, envisaged to be 

an iconic structure and an international 

tourist attraction. 

While the Atal Setu (third Mandovi 

bridge) was constructed over the 

Mandovi using a curing compound to 

retain moisture in the concrete to save 

water, for the new Zuari bridge, a more 

advanced curing compound is being 

specially manufactured. 

“Concrete requires water for curing. 

Applying curing compound, retains 

moisture inside so we avoid using 

water altogether. But, in the case of 

the new Mandovi bridge, a transparent 

curing compound was used. We have 

asked the manufacturers to add a 

pigment to our curing compound. This 

is why you see the white layer on the 

pillars for the bridge being constructed, 

the acrylic-based pigment helps us see 

that the curing compound is applied 

everywhere,” said Joshi. 

He said that the concrete being used is 

also a special high-performance one made, 

keeping in mind the extremely-saline 

environmental conditions in which the 

new Zuari bridge will have to survive in. 

“To be doubly sure under the extreme 

environmental conditions, corrosionresistant 

steel is being used and 

corrosion inhibitors are being mixed in 

the concrete to further protect the steel 

from corrosion,” said Joshi. 

Around 1,800 cubic metres of concrete 

is being manufactured daily for the 

construction of the new Zuari bridge. 

Dilip Buildcon is also using a sensor 

system to monitor the heat being 

generated by the concrete. 

“The heat being generated by concrete 

can exceeds 100 degrees Celsius when 

the quantities are large and this can 

lead to cracks forming. To control this 

temperature in the mass concrete, a 

pipeline cooling system is being used 

and the temperature is being monitored 

with the sensor system,” Joshi said.

Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday 

unveiled a giant Bhagavad Gita, 

running into 670 pages and weighing 

800 kg, at the International Society 

for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) 

temple in East of Kailash New Delhi. 

As per ISCKON, the holy book 

measuring 2.8 metres by 2 metres is the 

world's largest sacred book. ISKCON 

is also colloquially known as the Hare 

Krishna movement. The society has 

more than 400 temples and runs 100 

vegetarian restaurants and a wide 

variety of community-serving projects.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro may be a better 

version of Note 7 but it could also be the 

most expensive Redmi smartphone ever. 

The Chinese company is gearing up to 

launch Redmi Note 7 in India on February 

28. The first-ever Xiaomi phone to feature 

48-megapixel camera, Redmi Note 7 is set 

to heat up specs competition in the budget 

segment. Xiaomi is also working on a 

better version, Redmi Note 7 Pro.
