BOOKS
SCHOLASTIC
SCHOLASTIC
THE URSED HILD
For the dust jacket assignment, I
chose the book Harry Potter and the
Cursed Child which is read by both
teens and adults. The original dust
jacket includes a typeface of various
sizes, based on importance of text.
The title and authors are very large,
making it the first thing a potential
reader would see. It also includes
a detailed illustration that attracts
readers. The background is yellow
and brown, and has a watercolour/
old style effect. The back page is
very simple with little text. The flaps
include an introduction to the story
and information about the authors.
Overall, I decided to maintain many
parts of the original dusk jacket, since
it was laid out very effectively. This
includes the layout of the front and
back covers, as well as the inside flap
summary. For my dust jacket design, I
chose to make the background dark
red and yellow. This is because both
colours are known to stand out and
attract attention. Furthermore, I
decided to extend the yellow strips
across the front and back covers to
create a sense of flow and unity.
I used three typefaces: Marker Felt
for the book title, Impact for the
authors, and Avenir for the body of
text. Market Felt is a typeface that
gives the title character, as apposed
to a plain typeface. Impact is very
bold, making the authors’ names
stand out clearly. This is important
because J.K. Rowling is a well known
author, who influences a buyer’s
probability of purchasing the book.
Avenir is a great choice for the body
of text because it is legible and has
many typeface families.
For the graphics, I created a time
turner, which has a lot of significance
in the book. I also created a simplified
illustration of Harry Potter, where the
glasses incorporate the title of the
book. This illustration also includes
an outline of Hogwarts, which is the
setting of the book. When combined,
I believe these graphics are unique
enough to attract potential buyers.
ABOUT
GCM
The printing industry is Canada’s fourth-largest manufacturing
employer: an $11 billion dollar industry with 60,000 employees
working in more than 4,000 different establishments, according
to Statistics Canada. The School of Graphic Communications
Management (GCM) at Ryerson University is the only degreegranting
program in Canada dedicated to the printing industries.
The 4-year degree offers incredible opportunities in all areas of
digital imaging and print production leading to a management
career in the dynamic and rapidly growing printing industries.
The state-of-the-art Heidelberg Centre uses the latest technologies
available to help students become the future experts of the
printing industry. The program aims to turn students into effective
professionals in the printing industry through a solid foundation of
education and hands-on experience that allows them to develop as
professional managers. Recently, the Heidelberg Centre underwent
a series of renovations to accommodate the growing number of
students. Key renovations included project rooms, individual
workspaces, and a new packaging lab.
NEW
CURRICULUM
This year’s graduating class is the first to enter the industry with knowledge
from the new and flexible curriculum. It combines the creativity of graphic
communications with the business and management principles needed
to prepare students as future professional managers in the printing and
packaging industry. As students progress through the program, they are able
to explore specific topics.
In their first year, students are introduced to core concepts in the printing
industry, with hands-on lab courses focused on layout and printing processes.
In their second year, the curriculum focuses on improving upon previously
learned skills. A focus is put on topics such as typography, material science,
premedia workflows, and binding and finishing. The third year of classes
gives students insight into specific areas of the printing industry, with a
focus on business management. In their final year, students complete their
concentrations and apply all of their knowledge in a final project, either
a business plan or thesis.
6

NEW
CONCENTRATIONS
In their third year, students are able to take core electives to customize their
degree and graduate with a unique skill set. These core electives allow students
to pursue their interests through optional concentrations in Digital Graphic
Output, Packaging, Publishing, or Leadership. Each concentration requires six
courses chosen from a larger list and consist of both hands-on labs and informative
lectures. This year’s graduating class will be the first to enter the industry with a
concentration in an area of the printing industries.
Adding to the theme of the Grad Book, each student’s spread will have an assigned
colour based on their chosen concentration. The applicable concentrations and
minors will also be listed on the sidebar on the right-hand side.
Purple – Digital Graphic Output: focus on digital print applications
Green – Packaging: focus on consumer packaging solutions
Yellow – Publishing: focus on the publishing industry production
Blue – Leadership: focus on print-related business management
Red – No Concentration: focus on core electives
Explain how you
have changed
since your first
year at Ryerson.
What is your plan
after graduation?
JA
First-year Jorissa compared to fourth-year
Jorissa are two very different people. During
my first year at Ryerson, I was still maturing
as an individual and student. During the first
year, I was not as confident at facing new issues
and challenges here in Toronto. Also, the jump
from high school to university was a struggle for
me. Juggling the new workload from university
plus going to work, I really needed to learn how
to time-manage well. Over the past four years,
I believe my time management skills have
improved and my confidence in taking charge of
issues has increased.
My plan right after graduation is to get right
into the industry and start working, and
hopefully travel a little bit. Being able to travel
is super important to me. I love learning and
experiencing new cultures, and being able to
take my understanding of other cultures and
applying it to potential work I may have. Getting
right into the industry will allow me to apply
what I have learned and start making my mark
right away. I am super excited to get involved
with a great company and hopefully build a
successful career with them.
Explain how you
have changed since
your first year at
Ryerson.
During my first year at Ryerson, I was reluctant
to finish this program. I was absolutely confused
as to what I was doing and nothing in me
wanted to continue here. Eventually, I realized
almost nobody knew what they were doing; this
was almost comforting. This hesitant feeling
changed as the semesters progressed and I
started to appreciate what I was being taught
- I was learning valuable information and it
helped me narrow down my potential future life
plans. I’ve made great relationships with people
throughout my years here and I wouldn’t trade
this experience for anything.
PUBLISHING
What is your plan
after graduation?
After working for a few years to save up money,
I think it would be pretty cool to work alongside,
not for, an upcoming music artist and act as a
media manager/art director. Being able to bring
my music video and photo direction ideas to life
would be an amazing experience, especially if
I’m working with an artist I support completely.
Aside from that, I hope to travel through Asia
and possibly uncover some hidden mysteries.
This may be slightly optimistic, but it would be
a great adventure. After that, I’ll fall in love and
move to Venice.
What do you think
is the future of the
print industry?
What is your plan
after graduation?
I believe the future of the print industry persists
of a deepened focus within the packaging
industry as consumers turn to more single use
products. However, as awareness increases in
regard to the environmental impact of such
products, I believe that the packaging industry
will need to find creative solutions. Solutions
such as reducing waste for both the end product
and workflow process will become integral
while companies maintain a product line that is
suitable to the growing on-the-go lifestyle.
After graduating from GCM, I plan on entering
the packaging industry with a focus on
structural innovation and sustainable business
solutions. I have given much thought on
completing a Masters degree in the future which
would incorporate business and sustainability.
My aim is to work in a managerial position that
allows me to produce products while reducing
our environmental footprint as a company.
at GCM?
Coming to Ryerson has greatly impacted my
life. Although it was a nerve-wracking decision
to make; as it would surely be a life-changing
experience. It is one of the best decisions I ever
made. This school has opened up many doors
for my future. In my very first year, I learned to
be more confident with my work and Ryerson
taught me to be more independent. My first year
at Ryerson had helped me grow into the person
I am today.
I am proud to say I have many achievements
here at Ryerson, however, chief among them is
joining the Letterpress Club. I found it to be a
learning experience, but also something quite
enjoyable. I had gotten the chance to design and
print cards and posters. I was also fortunate
enough to visit the Mackenzie Printery Museum
and learn more about letterpress, and then
share the experience with others at Ryerson’s
DMZ Sandbox opening.
What are
your greatest
achievements/
accomplishments
at GCM?
PA
The most important thing I learned from my
internship was to push beyond my comfort zone.
I believe every person has talents and skills that
they are proud of. But when it comes to facing
weaknesses, we sometimes shy away from facing
them. In my internship, there were instances
where I got nervous to do a task because I was
afraid of not reaching expectations. But it was
important for me to try it out in order to gain
industry skills and to grow as a person. I take
those failures and lessons, and continue to learn
and grow from them.
One of my biggest accomplishments at GCM was
acquiring the Dean’s List award in my third year
of university. I am proud of this accomplishment
because I set that as a top goal for the year.
There were moments where it was tempting to
put in minimal effort, but I remained resilient
and tried my best. In the end, all my efforts
became my goal’s reality. It felt very rewarding
to reach an achievement that I had worked
hard for. In the future, I will apply the same
determination I have in school towards my job
in the industry.
Explain how you have
changed since your
first year at Ryerson.
What is your plan
after graduation?
A
I began as a very shy student not knowing
anyone in the program. This was extremely
intimidating to me especially because I had
come from a tight-knit private school. Much to
my pleasure, I found that GCM was also a very
tight-knit group where I have made new friends
for life. University teaches you great life lessons
such as learning how to interact with different
people and finding all your strengths and
weaknesses. I feel that I have really optimized
my brain in the sense that certain subjects
that I felt I was not strong in, I am now able to
understand and conquer.
My plan after graduation is to travel as much as
I can and build upon important relationships.
Along with education, networking is extremely
important when trying to look for jobs. The
more people you know, the more opportunities
will be put in front of you. I am very interested
in the retail fashion world and I think graphic
communications definitely plays a huge role in
this industry. I am very fortunate to have been
part of such unique programs that many other
universities do not have. I would love to open my
own business one day to put all my management
and design skills to the test.
you learned from
What is your plan
after graduation?
The most important thing I learned from my
internship was Digital Printing. I learned about
the processes of digital production, different
types of digital presses and colour maintenance/
calibration on Xerox iGen 5 presses. I gained
hands-on experiences and skills on how to
operate and maintain these digital presses to
produce high-quality jobs with efficiency. The
experience and knowledge I gained from my
internship was very valuable and informative.
After graduation, I plan to apply my experience
from Graphic Communications Management to
the print industry. I am interested in publishing
and prepress, and I would like to gain more
experience and expand my knowledge in those
areas of the printing industry. Also, I plan to
travel to gain new skills and an understanding of
the printing industry in different countries, but
that will not be for a few more years.
Describe the moment
you realized “what
you wanted to do
when you grew up.”
What motivated you?
If you could change
one thing about
yourself, what would
it be and why?
I realized that I wanted to pursue a career in
the digital communications field during high
school. At the time, I just knew that I loved
creating things. I took a media arts class
and instantly fell in love with digital design,
mainly because it allowed me to create things
in a seemingly whole new dimension. What
continues to motivate me is seeing the end
result of a project; the time that was spent
brainstorming, experimenting, and refining,
comes together to construct a product of my
own creation, and having the chance to show
those creations to the world is what drives me.
One trait I would like to change and improve
would be my indecisiveness. When working
on new projects there are so many paths my
mind goes down for the design. There is always
an afterthought that would counter in how
the project could have looked, but in the end I
reassure myself that the style that was chosen
is the most appropriate for the project, and
that the other ideas would be better suited for a
future project.
since your first
What are
your greatest
achievements/
accomplishments
at GCM?
Since my first year at Ryerson, I have grown
more as a person and learned to come out of my
shell. During my first year, I found that I was
more afraid to share my ideas or my work; I was
self-conscious about the things that I created.
Since then, thanks to the wonderful people I am
surrounded with and through the encouragement
of peers and professors, I have become more
comfortable with what I do and learned
where I want to head in life. I have been given
opportunities I never thought I would have been
able to receive, and thanks to these opportunities
I have been able to have amazing experiences.
My greatest accomplishments while at GCM are
the opportunities I’ve been given throughout
my years. The first of these was being able
to attend an Honours Flexible Packaging
program in Ghent, Belgium, which was hosted
by Esko. During this program, I was able to
undergo training in Esko’s software solutions
and develop mock packaging production art.
My second accomplishment comes from my
internship. Through my internship, I was able
to work for and alongside amazing people for
a company highly spoken of in GCM. I gained
knowledge and experience that I will carry
throughout my career.
What is the most
important thing
you learned from
your internship/
What is your plan
after graduation?
The key takeaway from my internship
experience is to step out of my comfort zone.
Trying out new opportunities and entering new
surroundings can bring on new challenges,
so I should not be afraid to reach out for help.
Whether it is advice about a specific task,
feedback on performance, or even career moves,
asking questions is a great way to demonstrate
genuine interest and make connections. After
all, I am there to learn and grow!
I would like to celebrate this academic
accomplishment by going abroad. I believe
taking a post-graduation hiatus would be
more beneficial than settling down into a work
routine. It would be an ideal time to reflect on my
goals & values and discover my true passions.
Additionally, traveling is a great opportunity
to meet new people and try new things whilst
pushing oneself out of their comfort zone and
broadening their perspectives.
have changed
since your first
What are
achievements/
accomplishments
at GCM?
A
Ryerson University has provided opportunities
in a constantly changing environment of
downtown Toronto. I positively grew alongside
specialized knowledge and valuable skills.
Compared to my first year, I’m more focused
and determined to refine myself in order to
make a greater contribution in the future. The
greatest development I have made leading up
to my fourth year is finally finding a new area of
interest within the print industry that can tie
into my skills, concentration, and minor. With
this, I can better plan ahead for the future with a
set of both long-term and short-term goals.
My GCM journey allowed me to gain academic
and personal achievements. On an academic
level, my greatest achievement is being a
recipient of the Canadian Printing Industries
Scholarship Trust Fund (CPISTF). Additionally,
the opportunity to work in the print industry
through an internship is another one of my
greatest accomplishments. My internship
provided first-hand exposure to working
alongside clients, managing their brand, and
producing jobs. On a personal level, I achieved
finding an area of interest within the print
industry to which I can now work towards
developing my skills.
One of the most impactful things that I learned,
while completing my internship, was that you’re
never done learning. This industry is constantly
growing and evolving to new possibilities every
day. Standards and best practices are simply
variables for what is available at the time.
Keeping up-to-date is the most important thing
you can do in this industry. Those who do well
are those who continuously learn.
My goal is to pursue the business realm within
the print industry. Since day one at GCM, I have
always had an interest and curiosity in the socalled
“behind the scenes” of such amazing and
innovative products. Although the production
process itself is a major portion of the job, it’s
the thought behind these products that interest
me. My hope is to be a part of the structure and
innovation that truly drives this industry.
I have changed in many, many ways since my
matured and grown as a person, become more
confident and independent, experienced life
outside a small Northern Ontario town and have
made so many good friends. Through my 4 years
at Ryerson, I’ve learned a craft that will enable
me to enrich both my own life and the life of
others, virtually anywhere in the world.
My greatest achievements have been in
embracing and participating in advancing my
education throughout my 4 years at Ryerson.
Being elected to serve on GCM Student Council
and Curriculum Committee, working with
staff as a Teaching Assistant and in the GCM
office as an assistant, are highlights that I
cherish. Reaching academic successes such as
maintaining a grade point average in all 4 years
to receive the Canadian Printing Industries
Scholarship yearly is a particularly proud
achievement.
If you could add
a new course to
GCM, what would
it be and why?
How do you plan to
make your mark in
the print industry?
JB
If I could add a new course to GCM it would be
an advanced design course. My reason being that
myself and many of my fellow classmates would
appreciate even more opportunities to showcase
and expand our design abilities. Additionally,
the design courses we have had at GCM had
been at the beginning of our university careers
and were primarily focused on how to use the
Adobe Creative Suite. Moving forward I hope
that GCM not only adds more design courses to
the curriculum but also creates a graphic design
concentration to support students heading into
that field of our industry.
I plan on making my mark in this industry
through cosmetic packaging. Across the beauty
industry brands, for the most part, follow the
same trends and end up producing practically
identical products as one another. However,
the way these brands differentiate themselves
and exhibit their brand’s value is through their
packaging. After graduation, I plan on becoming
a part of a brand’s packaging team and work to
communicate our brand’s worth and message
to the customer by engaging their senses when
coming in contact with our product/package.
Describe the moment
you wanted to do
when you grew up.”
What motivated you?
If you could change
one thing about
yourself, what would
it be and why?
JB
I was actually formally denied to GCM. That
was a tough one to process. My math mark was
below the 70% minimum for GCM and I was told
that if I redid the math course and submitted a
competitive midterm mark before the waitlist
went out, that I could have my application
resubmitted. Thankfully, I had an online
chemistry course in high school, which after a
few phone calls we had changed to an advanced
functions math course. Judgement Day was the
day before waitlist went out, and I’m proud to say
I crushed it and I sent through a 97% midterm
math mark.
As I write this I’m still deciding. I know what I
want to do, but in my current position, it isn’t
sustainable yet. I want to run my own business
because I recognize there are some issues in
our industry, but also because I don’t think
I’m a good subordinate. I am a grinder, I will
outwork anyone in the room, but as a result, I
lose interest really fast when there’s a celling to
my growth. If I don’t feel like I’m developing my
skills and getting better when I work, I don’t see
the point in doing that work.
SC
I cannot remember an exact moment, but I
have always been drawn to luxury products
and packaging. How brands look and what they
communicate is extremely important. The GCM
program offered the chance to blend a mix of
business and creative aspects into a career.
I knew I wanted to work in an industry that was
dynamic and progressive, allowing for creative
expression. GCM has helped me to develop a
wide range of skills that are transferable, for an
exciting career working with luxury brands.
After graduation, I will be involved in luxury
brand management, working closely with
clients in the cosmetic and fragrance packaging
industry; specifically, with marketing and
creative direction. From working at TD and
my internship at RR Donnelley, I have gained
experience with creative brand management
and work well with many types of people,
whether co-workers or clients. I am not a
graphic designer, but on the production side, I
know what is possible, what it takes to create a
finished piece and how to find creative solutions.
I know what looks good.
What is the most
The most important thing that I have learned
from my internship is how printed labels are
effectively managed within a large printing
company. Throughout my internship, I
served a role at Ingenious Packaging Group
as a packaging engineer assistant, in which
I engineered sizes for new shrink sleeve
projects. In addition, I also created die-lines in
Adobe Illustrator, and shrink sleeve samples
for customer evaluation. Thus, over time, I
developed an exceptional working knowledge of
how shrink sleeve labels are managed prior to
distribution in numerous retailers.
PACKAGING
What is your plan
After graduation, I intend to start working in
the industry. I am really interested in packaging
and would like to pursue a career in a company
that manufactures packaging including shrink
sleeves, labels and others. There are lots of
opportunities and positions out there. I am
particularly interested in becoming a packaging
technician or working in prepress. In the long
term, I would like to gain enough experience in
these positions so I can lead a team.
What motivated you?
How do you plan to
make your mark in
the print industry?
I had always been interested in art and design
as a child, and with my mom involved in arts,
she was my inspiration to pursue design as a
career path. During high school, my art was
featured in the Toronto Star, Snapd, and the
Scarborough Mirror. I also had the experience
to work with American Apparel, Sony Canada,
MGMT, the TDSB, the CNE, and the Pan Am
and Para Pan Am games. My high school years
really allowed me to find my style as a designer
and collaborate with other creative people,
motivating me to pursue design further and
make a career out of it.
I plan on making my mark in the print industry
by bringing a fresh perspective to the work I
will design and will collaborate on. I believe
that accessibility in graphic design is extremely
important, and more focus should be put into
designing for the visually impaired. There are
some really exciting advances in this branch of
the industry and I hope to delve into them in the
future. A focus on environmentally conscious
design will allow for sustainability in the
industry in the future and is really important to
me in my designs.
At my internship working at a custom apparel
the constantly changing environment. My role
as a production assistant challenged me to wear
multiple hats and understand the importance
of effective communication with my co-workers
which was key to maintaining an efficient
and organized workflow in such a fast-paced
Enrolling in an improv course for my open
achievements to date while at GCM. I challenged
myself out my comfort zone and did something
that absolutely petrified me. Improv was a
terrifying thought at first but I’m glad I took
it because it taught me to quickly adapt to
the changing environment and be open and
accepting to making mistakes because how
else was I going to learn from them? I strongly
believe that life begins at the end of your comfort
that I have a tendency of doubting myself in fear
of making a mistake. During my past 4 years
at Ryerson, I’ve definitely taken more risks and
trusted my own instincts. I learned that making
I believe that the future for the print industry is
in packaging and in product innovation. Every
single product in the world needs packaging,
which includes many steps, such as picking
the printing process, picking the materials,
designing, creating a dieline and a layout,
In my opinion, packaging is the fastest growing
industry and it is an industry that I would like
The future of the print industry will be
expanding even more so than it is now. Through
innovations in accessibility, sustainability,
various technologies, there are plenty of
possibilities with how the industry will grow and
develop. The future of the industry will include
a combination of conventional and digital
This area of print will never go obsolete and the
The possibilities are endless within the print
was one thing I would change about myself, I
would want a more definite and specific passion
a struggle because I have interests in multiple
areas however, there is not a single path that
I would pick over the other. This poses the
Out of all the learning experiences I have
encountered during my internship, the most
important aspect I have acknowledged is that
communication is key. Many failures to complete
the lack of communication. Effective
communication leads to better client
it prevents any confusion and allows for a better
submit a cover design, and mine was chosen to be
the official cover. The book was printed by GCM
and about 100 or so were distributed to students.
This is my greatest achievement because it was
JD
the first time I designed something out of my
comfort zone and ended up being printed and
distributed to numerous people.
Explain how you
have changed
since your first
year at Ryerson.
What is your plan
after graduation?
D
My critical thinking and problem-solving skills
have enhanced throughout my years at Ryerson.
Many of the GCM courses have provided me with
challenges that I have embraced and overcome
with a positive attitude. GCM has also equipped
me with a well-rounded skill set and knowledge
about the graphic communications and printing
industries. Additionally, my education at Ryerson
and my GCM internship experience have
helped me acquire excellent organizational and
communication skills. I look forward to applying
what I have learned throughout these past four
years in the workforce.
After I graduate, my plan is to find a position in
the graphic communications industry where I
can apply my acquired skills and knowledge. My
work experience and concentration in packaging
will ideally lead me to a position at a packaging
company. However, with my well-rounded
skillset, I would welcome any opportunity in
the industry that allows for me to contribute
my holistic initiative, calm demeanour, and
eagerness to learn more.
What is the most
important thing
you learned from
your internship/
international
The most important thing I learned from my
summer internship is the value of teamwork.
Working in an extremely high-paced
environment, you need to be communicating
with your co-workers and making sure that jobs
are completed correctly and in a timely manner.
In addition, staying organized and learning
to prioritize tasks has been a key takeaway in
being successful. Overall, this internship has
been a huge accomplishment and has prepared
me for my professional future.
What are
your greatest
achievements/
accomplishments
at GCM?
One of my greatest achievements in GCM has
been securing a job during the internship
program. I worked extremely hard to find a
position that would give me the opportunity to
learn and grow in the print industry. With the
practice from job fairs and second interviews,
I began sending more professional emails,
became comfortable speaking on the phone, and
improved interview skills. The whole process
prepared me for my future job applications and
made me a stronger more hireable job candidate.
Describe the moment
you realized “what
What motivated you?
In high school, I discovered the world of
design and the passion that came along with
it. However, I wanted to learn more than just
design itself, which is what brought me to
GCM today. I believe what motivated me was
the people who supported my passion and eye
for design, and my intuition to do what makes
me happy in the moment. As of right now, I
still don’t know exactly what I want to be, but
I believe it would be something along the lines
of “a creator”. I want to create things whether
it would be through production or design, and
bring my ideas to life.
PUBLISHING
If you could change
one thing about
yourself, what would
it be and why?
I’d want to change my attitude and outlook on
life. I’m not the most positive person, and I tend
to be quite hard on myself in certain situations.
I want to take on new opportunities without
thinking about the negative side of things. I
want to change my outlook on opportunities and
believe in my own abilities more because it’ll
bring confidence to me in what I do, and enhance
my capabilities and encourage me to take on
more challenges in life.
What is your plan
after graduation?
I have grown and changed so much since
beginning my academic journey at Ryerson.
When I first started attending university, I was
fresh out of high school and had no idea what I
was getting myself into. I was very nervous and
wasn’t sure how to navigate the confusing world
of university. Fast forward to my fourth year, I
have gained so much confidence and knowledge
to the point where I feel I can say with a smile on
my face that I am ready to enter the professional
workforce.
After I graduate from GCM I plan on trying to
combine my upcoming career with my love of
travel. I am so eager to discover the world, but
I am also very eager to start my career. I am
hoping that I can combine the two by moving
outside of Canada and finding employment that
allows me to express myself. Finding a work/
If I could change one thing about myself, it would
be that I would learn to speak French. Firstly, I
think it would be amazing to be bilingual, and
secondly because being bilingual is such a huge
asset to have in the Canadian job market, and
it is something that I would love to be able to
help differentiate me from other applicants. As
At the beginning of my first year, I was unaware
of the challenges and the learning opportunities
that were ahead. Throughout the years leading
to my final year, I was able to grow through
the lessons taught by professors to further a
potentially long-lasting job as an adult. Also
through the years I have grown, and getting
The biggest change that I have noticed ever
improved in terms of time management skills.
During my first year, time management was one
of my weaknesses, in which I had trouble with
Progressively, I became better at this due to
spending more time in planning and scheduling
school with work, which is something that I am
I’ve always known that I wanted a career in a
been a strength of mine growing up. As I got
older, specifically in high school, I realized the
importance of this strength to every company.
I’ve been motivated to turn this passion
into my career ever since. Throughout postsecondary
I’ve been consistently motivated by
the innovation emerging, diverse opportunities
available and impact that this industry has on
society. This inspiration makes me excited and
determined to be an influential member of the
graphic arts industry.
Throughout my time at GCM, I have many great
accomplishments that I will remember forever.
One achievement that I’m very proud of is my
proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite. Before
coming to GCM I had not even heard of these
design softwares that I’m now able to utilize with
ease. Another accomplishment I’ve achieved is
the completion of my internship with YM inc.
I’m extremely proud of this because it made me
believe in my capabilities, knowledge and talents.
My internship also taught me many skills that I
What is your plan
Since my first year at Ryerson, I have changed
a lot. The way I approach my work is very
different than when I started, specifically my
prioritization skills. There are a lot of different
things that students juggle in university and I
am most proud of how I have been able to adapt
and change my methods to succeed in these past
four years. The way I plan and schedule things
now has allowed me to mature and do better in
all aspects of my life.
I’m sure my plan after graduation is similar to
the rest of my peers, and it is to gain real work
experience. School is definitely a great learning
experience but nothing teaches you more than
being in the field, so my priority after graduating
is to learn as much as possible. While doing this
I hope to figure out exactly what I want to do
What do you think
is the future of the
print industry?
What is your plan
after graduation?
There are endless possibilities for growth in
the printing industry. I believe that the future
will entail more innovations in digital inkjet
printing. Recently, the market demand for offset
printing has seen a drop and has lead to an
increase in digital printing. There have been
developments in digital print technology that
allow for more surface finishes to be printed
on the same project, in addition to increased
speeds. This allows for fewer limitations than
those present in offset printing.
Upon graduation, I plan on working to gain
more experience and applying my knowledge of
various printing styles in the printing industry.
I hope to continue learning while working, as
new trends are constantly coming forth and are
important to know in order to be successful.
I also hope to travel all over the world one day.
I believe that learning about different cultures
growth but for professional growth as well.
Explain how you
have changed
since your first
year at Ryerson.
What is your plan
after graduation?
From the moment when I first started at
different person. I only had a small idea of
what the print industry was and anything to
do within it. Now that I am at the end of my
Ryerson experience I can say I have learned a
lot of terminologies, including the step by steps
on how to do a large handful of things in the
print industry, whether that is how to run a
flexographic press or how to adhere a window
vinyl. The main way I have changed since first
year is through experience.
My plan after graduation is to continue to
work and gain further experience throughout
the industry. This will also help me narrow
down which section in the industry I would be
content to work and continue to love what I do.
I want to gain the experience to help break my
ties of what I love to do the most in the print
industry and see which I would like to continue
to focus and develop my skills towards. I would
even like to go back to school to get a Masters
G
A rite of passage in high school is to enrol
into the typing course. However, I was not
keen about tapping away at the typewriter.
Thankfully, a new course was being offered
called Communication Technology. I quickly
signed up. This course about design programs
and media arts would become my gateway to
the print industry. I did not darken my guidance
counselor’s doorway, to take career path surveys
and ponder about where I wanted to go in life,
I already knew from tinkering on the design
programs in the Communication Technology
labs that I wanted to be involved in the world
of graphic arts.
After that last exam I would like to take a
short pause and allow my mind and body to
rejuvenate. I also want to continue learning.
One of my goals is to be an Adobe Certified
Expert (ACE) for InDesign and Illustrator.
Another goal I am considering is a Masters
program that incorporates the distilling of big
data into visual display. As for a career path,
I have always has a passion for taking content
and arranging it into a pleasing layout to
engage an audience. I am open-minded to any
position within the print industry that allows
me to do this daily.
I am going to make an impact in the print
industry with my technical, creative and
detail-oriented skills. The printing industry is
evolving and becoming more technology-based,
which, due to my skill set in digital printing,
E-book publishing and the ability to adapt to
industry-standard software, I will be able to help
transform the way we act with products and
packaging. At GCM we learn how to work with
different printing processes and workflows which
helps us familiarize ourselves with various print
and digital operations in the industry.
My international exchange to Copenhagen
changed me for the better. Without it, I can’t
imagine how I would be now. It forced me
to leave my home base. I met new people,
experienced a new culture and did things I never
normally would have. The skills and knowledge
I learned abroad will be applied throughout my
life. 30 years down the line, I will look back on
my exchange with a smile and remember the
memories that I have created with some of the
greatest people.
How do you plan to
make your mark in
the print industry?
I want to leave a lasting impression on everyone I
meet. I want to improve their life through strong
and positive relationships. I wish to inspire my
family, friends, coworkers, and employees in a
way that strives them to not improve themselves
for the company but rather for the sake of
themselves. My ideal job is creating a workplace
that people want to contribute their knowledge,
Having worked at Ryerson’s office of eLearning
as a Multimedia Assistant for close to a full
year, I got accustomed to developing new skills
for projects such as video production, web
development, and writing marketing content.
I learned to take initiative to contact the right
Having worked at the office of eLearning and
with several TA positions; some of which I got
the freedom to develop and teach in 1 to 1.5
a position where I am involved with customer
believe I would excel in a position of consultative
nature given my experience in the education and
I learned how crucial communication is during
an outside company; communication on any
level is important to ensure that a project
runs smoothly. I do my best in every situation
to hear everyone’s ideas as well as express
I care a lot about any project I am a part of
am so passionate about my work and this can
often help me be efficient and think on the spot.
However, it can also impede me from thinking
thoroughly. Over the years I have tried to
combat this by listening to others for longer
and taking the time to write out ideas or talk
through them with others before reacting.
since your first
What is your plan
after graduation?
I started the Graphic Communications
Management program four years ago and
have grown exponentially since then. From
the first year, I had minimal knowledge of the
print industry, management and design. After
completing the GCM program, I have become
more knowledgeable of the print industry
and the importance of not only the printing
processes but topics related to the print
industry such as publishing, client relations
and marketing. Ryerson has taught me hard
skills, leadership skills, as well as helped grow
my confidence and teach me the importance of
teamwork and collaboration.
After graduating from the Graphic
Communications Management program I
plan on gaining more experience in the print
industry. I aim to pursue a career in publishing
and earn more hands-on experience in the
publishing industry. Alongside this, I plan to
gain experience in sales and marketing in the
print industry. I believe that with my knowledge
from GCM and my Marketing Minor. I will be an
What do you think
is the future of the
print industry?
In the next few years, I believe that digital
printing and new inkjet technologies will be
making themselves more known to printers in
a big way. As the capabilities of digital printing
draw closer and closer to offset technologies it
leaves us all a very exciting time to be a part of
the printing industry. I believe that soon offset
printing will have to compete more directly
with digital work to account for print quality in
addition to price-based attributes. I am excited
to see the changes that will happen and hope to
be a part of making some of this change myself.
How do you plan to
make your mark in
the print industry?
I hope to spend time working at the forefront of
development in the printing industry. I would
like to work on creating new standards and
ways of doing things that influence the industry
across the world. There is a massive amount of
innovation currently taking place in the printing
industry, especially in the digital area with
things such as high-speed inkjet and digital
finishing. One of my core goals for the time I
spend in this industry is to make sure that some
part of all this innovation comes from me.
The most important thing I have learned
from my internship is you take the most out of
your time at a company through the interest
and willingness you put in. My internship
took place at Lorpon Labels. There I learned
a whole different side of the industry that I
was not exposed to prior. I feel if I did not ask
questions, learn their processes and put my full
efforts into my position I would not come out
of the internship with the same appreciation I
currently have for the industry.
After graduation, I plan on continuously
educating myself within the developing graphic
communications industry. Over the last 10
years, we have seen innovations in processes
like 3D printing, digital printing, and digital
publishing, which are all trends I feel are
important to understand to be successful in
this industry. By keeping up with trends such
as these, I plan to incorporate them within
the position I am in and hopefully share that
knowledge with co-workers and clients.
you learned from
How do you plan to
While there are a multitude of things I learned
while on exchange, the most important was the
realization that stepping out of your comfort
zone is the first step to seeing change. There
are a lot of things one simply cannot learn from
the confines of a classroom. Being on exchange
taught me about perseverance and the value
of risk-taking. The limits of the possible can
only be defined by going beyond them into the
impossible and I’ve learned that the more we
experience the value of pushing beyond our
limits, the more confident we will be taking
risks in the future!
I see a great future for myself and my peers
as we enter the print industry and I feel it
is important for me to pay homage to the
experiences that got me where I am today as
I leave my mark on the industry. Having a
mentor to guide me and be my friend over the
past four years is something I value very much
and as I mature in the industry. I plan to pay it
forward and offer mentorship to the future of our
industry. The things I have learned have shaped
me into who I am today and have also fueled
my passion for our industry and it would be an
honour to do the same for someone else.
designing. Previously, I had never given coding
a second thought until GCM362: Web and Cross
I also design a lot of 3D projects as a hobby,
due to the GCM750: 3D Printing elective. The
elective wasn’t in my concentration but I’m glad
I took it because it ended up being one of my
learn all the aspects of books from publishing,
entire design process behind it would be a very
One of the most important lessons that I
learnt during my internship was the ability to
communicate and work with people. I grew up
as a very shy kid, and being put into high-stress
level situations with a large number of people
forced me to grow out of my shell.
I became a more confident person and developed
new skills to please as many people as possible
If you could add
a new course to
GCM, what would
it be and why?
If I could add a new course to GCM, it would be
a class that would teach basics of coding. Some
of the classes we had in the past (e.g. GCM362,
GCM320) included writing codes whether
in Microsoft Excel or Adobe Dreamweaver
which had some students confused because
they’ve never coded before. Having a class that
introduces the concept will help many students
get into basic coding and move on to more
advanced parts of coding. It would be part of our
courses in 1 st or 2 nd year.
If you could change
K
If I could change one thing about myself, it would
be my time management skills. I have to balance
time between work, school and social life better
than I do now. It’s easy for me to get distracted
while focusing on school work for the most part.
I’m thinking about using a day planner since I
keep up with everything mentally. A good plan is
start to better time management as it will help
me keep track of what I need to do, when I need
to do it.
For my internship, I worked as a production
the vision for the end result. The complexity of
each brand’s design can be tough to navigate in
terms of how large each component can be, what
logos are needed for each job, and how much
text the customer wants on each SKU. This
During my internship, I came to the realization
that versatility is crucial to the industry. I have
the opportunity to work in both environments.
The workplace is not always perfect so there
I think 3D printing is the future of the printing
industry. It can print different things with
different materials that can benefit not just one
industry but many others. For example, any
type of engineering makes uses of 3D printing
in one way or another. The engineers leverage
3D printing by building prospective models for
their projects. There is one company using
3D printing to “build” thousands of houses
in El Salvador. It’s very fascinating to see the
rapid growth of technology that has enabled us
to cross function.
My greatest achievement at GCM is that I am
able to experience many different things that I
am interested in. I am minoring in ITM, which
led me to fall in love with technology even more.
I got to learn both sides of technologies and
skills for the real world industry. Aside from
academics, I joined RyeTAGA and the Grad
Book Committee as the Finance Lead. I also
have joined an Archery club for three years now.
I have met new friends, learnt from others, and
made good memories. During my years at GCM,
I have accomplished a lot by doing what I love
and learning what I am passionate about.
Explain how you
have changed
since your first
year at Ryerson.
In my first year at Ryerson, I was fresh out of
high school and uncertain of who I was. The new
environment, people, events, and GCM program
have all moulded me into becoming a more
confident, ambitious and independent person.
I used to be timid and unwilling to take risks,
but now I have a go-getter attitude which pushes
me to pursue bigger things in life that I never
imagined myself doing until now. My university
experience is definitely something I will never
forget as it got me to where I am today, and I am
nothing but excited for what the future holds.
PUBLISHING
What is your plan
after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to seek out a design job
that requires me to take on harder challenges
than what I have faced before, by picking my
brain on the different mediums I have utilized
throughout my years at GCM. I hope to find a job
abroad after a few years working in Toronto,
to gain international experience which could
help me stand out from other competitors and
land me a dream job, wherever it may be.
If you could add
a new course to
GCM, what would
it be and why?
How do you plan to
make your mark in
the print industry?
JL
I would add a course related to information
technology. This is because the world is always
innovating with new technologies as companies
use networks and databases to improve their
workflows in order to become a better brand.
I am also working towards my minor in
information technology management. These
courses helped to improve my technical skills,
which I was able to use during my internship
at Atlantic Packaging. GCM is about graphic
communications and a large part of that is
digital, so having an information technology
course would help students to build their
technical industry skills.
I plan to make my mark in the print industry
by sharing and using the knowledge and skills
that I’ve learned from GCM. Throughout
these four years, I was able to learn the entire
workflow of projects as I’ve gained hands-on
experience by creating packaging prototypes,
e-books, design layouts, and much more.
These projects along with courses related
to technology, marketing, and management
have helped to build the foundation of my
skills today. GCM has advanced my skills in
the technical and hands-on sides of graphic
communications management in order to
prepare me for today’s print industry.
Describe the moment
you realized “what
What motivated you?
The moment that I realized what I wanted
to do when I grew up was when I was in high
school and I began selling my artwork to
clients. I started off by selling paintings, and
later on graphic design pieces for businesses.
I loved creating, but what I loved more was the
creative process, working with clients, solving
issues and meeting my customer’s needs. From
this, I have formed amazing relationships
with my clients because I am dependable, and
passionate about my job, and for this reason
I have continued being motived to work with
clients and the creative process.
My plan after graduation is to get as much life,
work, and professional experience as possible.
When it comes to my future, my career is
my first priority, but I believe that a great
employee is someone who has both work and life
experiences. Upon graduation, I want to work for
a company where I can apply what I have learned
in my undergrad, but also where I can increase
my depth of knowledge and grow.
What are
at GCM?
The most important thing I learned from my
international exchange to Linköping University
to study Graphic Communications and Design
is the attention to detail and aesthetic. By
enrolling for a semester abroad, I was able
to develop a cross-cultural understanding in
order to grow professionally and personally.
The opportunity to study in Sweden was an
opportunity of a lifetime that enhanced my
university experience with a willingness to grow
and adapt to various situations.
My greatest achievement within the program
at GCM is being the President of RyePack
2018-2019. The humbling opportunity to share
my passion for packaging within the Ryerson
community and my knowledge of the industry
from attending Interpack 2017, Pack Expo
2018, and studying packaging and design in an
exchange program at Linköping University in
Sweden. My greatest achievement is being able
to give back to the community here at GCM
Explain how you
have changed
since your first
year at Ryerson.
If you could change
one thing about
yourself, what would
it be and why?
M
Starting my first year at Ryerson, I found myself
to be a shy girl wanting to break out of her shell,
coming to Ryerson allowed me to do so. I moved
away from home and got the great opportunity
to live in and explore the city of Toronto. I met
new people who have become a big part of my
life and I stepped out of my comfort zone. I have
grown into a confident adult and am learning to
accept my mistakes and only grow from them.
One thing I would change about myself is my
tendency to procrastinate and to only focus
on one task at a time. I have a habit of putting
some projects on the backburner and while I
know that this is not the proper way to handle
assignments, I am working on being more
efficient. Another thing I am working on is my
ability to take an in-depth look at the project as
well as what needs to be done in order to start
the process. I am continuing to improve my
procrastination and keep it under control.
What are
your greatest
at GCM?
A course I would add to GCM’s curriculum would
be focused on copyright and brand management.
This topic is one I have done research on but
would have greatly appreciated the opportunity
to learn more about in an academic setting.
Although this has been touched upon in the
ethics portion of courses, it would have been
valuable to understand and gain a more
in-depth look at the logistical and legal aspects
of managing brands and clients.
Besides earning my degree in Graphic
Communications Management, some of my
greatest achievements have been maintaining
my scholarship and making industry
connections over the past four years. This
hard work and grit but also the importance
of building strong interpersonal skills by
other countries for conferences, and speaking
What do you think
is the future of the
print industry?
What is your plan
after graduation?
I believe the future of the print industry lies
in our ability to incorporate important values
like sustainability and accessibility into the
design and output of what we create and the
services we offer. For a growing industry like
packaging, I believe there is an opportunity for
this to be done here. Whether it is by innovating
packages that produce less material waste
and are more environmentally-friendly, or by
designing packages with all people in mind
by incorporating elements for those that with
different accessibility needs.
After my graduation, I plan to continue my goals
of improving upon my interpersonal skills and
expanding my professional network. I hope to
achieve these goals by gaining a wide variety of
experience through working in different areas
of the industry. This way I hope to uncover the
The most important thing that I learned
I took from my internship that I find the most
important was being assertive, confident, bold,
If you could add
GCM, what would
If you could change
one thing about
yourself, what would
it be and why?
M
I would recommend including courses
specifically to user experience, user interface,
and interactive design. Digital media is growing,
and those in both print and digital output
should have an understanding of how humans
read, interact, and view designs and material.
Websites, apps, and interactive designs require
different approaches than static imagery. I
would recommend these courses along with a
design-oriented GCM concentration.
One thing I’ve been working on is being more
active and vocal in the communities that interest
me. This not only includes GCM-related areas
but also Ryerson and occupational communities.
There is so much to learn from others, and
there’s value in speaking to those who share
similar interests. I plan to involve myself in such
communities to both learn from, and further
expand upon these studies of interest.
The most important thing I have learned from
my internship at TI Group Inc. is how to work
together as a team. Group work in university
teaches students how to manage time and
be patient with others. In a professional
get the most out of every job. Working towards
the same goal with a positive attitude and
mindset is a significant life skill that I learned
through the summer.
After graduation, I plan to build upon my career
by experiencing various job positions within the
industry. In that way, I am able to gauge what my
capabilities, interests, and goals are best suited
for in a long-term career. Another goal for myself
What is your plan
My growth as an individual has been one
that I am proud of. At Ryerson, the first year
was the most challenging as I adjusted to the
new environment and met new individuals.
Ryerson has helped me not just in my academic
growth, but it has centred around my personal
development too. With the guidance of my
professors and peers, I have gained confidence
by becoming an experiment in my field and
learning new things. I have gained knowledge
that has helped me understand my strength,
interests and skills that have helped me in
making decisions in life and my career.
After graduation, I want to explore myself
more as a designer. I want to pursue my career
as a graphic designer. I would like to explore
different opportunities that will utilize my
skills learned at GCM and will help me grow
after graduation?
The future for the print industry is going to
see a lot of growth in many different sectors of
the industry. While longer print runs will be
declining in the future, areas such as packaging
and shorter print runs will become the strong
stable sector for print. Furthermore, there
will be many new emerging opportunities for
the printing industry to grow such as print
automation, expanded gamut printing and
variable data printing.
Currently, my short-term plan after graduating
from GCM is to work in the printing industry to
develop a stronger understanding of the industry,
trends and areas of growth. My main long term
goal is to open up a business. While I currently
do not know what type of business I will be
opening, I hope that my future experiences and
opportunities will help serve as an important
foundation in my business adventure.
Explain how you
have changed
since your first
year at Ryerson.
What is your plan
after graduation?
N
Since my first year at Ryerson, I have changed
exponentially. I grew up in a very small town, so
making a move to ‘the big city’ was very different
for me. It was difficult at first, not having family
or friends around, however, once I adjusted and
found the confidence and self-awareness that I
needed to be here it became a city that I loved.
Although I still prefer my small town, I will
always love this city and the experiences it has
to offer. Never would I have thought that I was
going to grow up to be a city girl.
I hope to be able to travel the world, exposing
and immersing myself to the different
cultures and traditions. This is something I
have wanted to experience from a very young
age. Doing so would give me the experience
and understanding of different cultures and
traditions, thus allowing me to have a deeper
knowledge and understanding of the world
we live in and the people we work with. I
believe having this experience will open more
opportunities for my career in the future.
Explain how you
have changed
since your first
year at Ryerson.
My journey into GCM was not a direct one – I
finished half of another degree before realizing
what my true passions were and making the
transition to GCM. The journey of completing
half a degree (in something completely different
nonetheless), exploring the hard truth that I
had not made the right decision for myself, and
discovering my passion for the graphic arts
industry has made me a more mature,
self-aware and dedicated student and employee.
I am grateful for this process and for GCM, as
it has turned a self-doubting 18-year-old into a
confident and soon-to-be proud alumna of GCM.
MARKETING
What is your plan
after graduation?
TP
After graduation, I plan to pursue a career in
the graphic arts industry, particularly in the
fields of print marketing, brand management
or production management. GCM, however,
prepares its graduates to work in a variety
of fields. Regardless of the sector, I would be
thrilled to work for a company that is innovative
and provides opportunities for employee growth.
Beyond this pursuit, I plan on continuing to
develop and grow my own small business: I
specialize in percussion instruction and have
a growing online and in-person student base in
Canada, the US and Australia.
What is the most
important thing
you learned from
your internship/
international
exchange?
If you could change
one thing about
yourself, what would
it be and why?
The most important thing I learned from my
internship was that having a cohesive and
efficient plan in place is an important aspect of
ensuring a project is completed successfully.
Having a plan ensures that deadlines will be
met and that things will run more efficiently.
Also, it ensures that everyone working on the
project will be on the same page when it comes
to completing the project. Good planning is the
key to completing a successful project.
If I could change one thing about myself, it
would be to not overthink everything. It is good
to pay attention to the small details of a project
and even worry about certain aspects, but
becoming fixated on one thing will prevent you
from seeing other things that you could not see
before, and even prevent you from seeing the
bigger picture. This is something I’m currently
still working on and have been able to make
enormous amounts of progress, but it is a trait
I’m still looking to improve on.
Explain how you
have changed
since your first
GCM has helped to develop my skills in all
areas of the print industry. I have shifted my
interest from graphic design, which I was most
interested in during my first year, to publishing
and layout, as well as signage in my final year.
Besides shifting interests, I also developed
a new interest in areas such as wide-format
printing, 3D printing, scheduling and project
management. All projects assigned in GCM
have put my skills to the test and allowed me
to grow and change during my four years at
Ryerson University.
After graduation, I plan to gain experience in
the industry. There are many fields I would be
interested in and open to exploring. Further
exploring my interests would let me gain
more knowledge and become a valuable asset
to a company, allowing me to take what I am
Typically I stay at my place of work for long
periods of time so my goal is to work in a
company where I can take on responsibility and
What is the most
you learned from
What is your plan
after graduation?
R
The most important thing I learned from my
internship was the importance of teamwork. The
tight deadlines wouldn’t have been met without
the help of my co-workers. From collaboration,
I learned new things from my co-workers and
expanded my breadth of knowledge. I also found
that team work brought a lot of enthusiasm.
We celebrated victories and we leaned on one
another when things didn’t go according to
plan. Unique and creative ideas were the result
of working in a team environment. Each person
brought forward their expertise and this reduced
potential risks and maximized problem solving.
Although I will miss being a student and
learning new things about the print industry,
I am excited to jump right into the industry. I
hope to start working full-time in the industry,
specifically in a customer service role.
I enjoyed working with various clients during
my internship. It was challenging, yet very
rewarding, when I got to see the client’s ideas
brought to life. In the long run, I hope to create
and manage my own company. The idea is to
bring my fourth year business plan to reality,
using the knowledge I’ve acquired in school and
will acquire in the industry.
GCM, what would
If you could change
one thing about
yourself, what would
it be and why?
R
If I could add a course to Graphic
Communications Management I would
implement two things. One, design courses that
challenge students with design-oriented projects
and two, a concentration in design. Many
students are surprised when arriving into the
first year that there is little to no design.
I believe GCM is a great foundation for
students to understand the importance of print
and how to produce a quality project. Adding a
few design related courses or a concentration
would evolve GCM to become an even more
well-rounded program.
The one thing I would change about my self is
being a perfectionist. I have a tendency of over
examining the details and stress about every
little thing related to a design. When it comes
to a project that I am really passionate about I
tend to be very particular and overanalyze my
content. Resulting in delaying a finished project
because I am not satisfied with the overall
quality. This may be a good trait to others but
sometimes it gets in the way of my studies and I
have to remind myself to work efficiently.
Describe the moment
you realized “what
you wanted to do
when you grew up.”
What motivated you?
I believe finding what you want to do occurs at
various times in your life, and not in a specific
moment. There are many things you discover
you want to do, and those wants will evolve over
time. If I had to pick one specific moment when I
decided to follow what I wanted to do, it would be
when a friend of mine, who I look up to, advised
me to follow what fulfills me. Before that, I
mainly listened to what people wanted me to
do and forgot to assess how I felt about it. After
talking to my friend, I began to step out of my
comfort zone, and that lead me to discovering
things I want to do.
PUBLISHING
If you could change
R
If I could change one thing about myself, it
would be to gain more confidence in myself. I
want to be able to think more positively instead
of thinking, “This person, or these people, is/
are not going to like me and my work.” I tend
to gravitate towards thinking negatively, and
I do not want to keep that mindset. Over time,
my lack of confidence has improved through
the work experience I have been fortunate to
have. However, there is still plenty of room for
improvement, and I am always willing to work
towards becoming a better me.
R
I came to GCM knowing that I wanted to do
something hands-on that would use my outsidethe-box
thinking. From the start I enjoyed all
my courses, but it was my first packaging class
that made it clear what I really wanted to do. If
you had told me in high school that I would find
my passion in packaging, I would have difficulty
believing that. Now thanks to my professors, my
classes and the education provided by GCM, I
know what truly interests me and what I want to
spend my career doing. In the field of packaging
I have found work that is engaging, practical,
creative and rewarding.
One of my goals for my time at GCM was to find
ways to fully engage myself in the program, not
only within the classroom, but also in extracurricular
opportunities. Toward this end, I
am proud of my role in the production of the
Grad Book. As the Co-Project Manager and
Co-Production Lead, I have been responsible for
leading meetings, ensuring that all deadlines
are adhered to, and working closely with other
What are
S
In first year, the thought of living in the city and
specially moving out from a small town in Alberta
was very intimidating. I quickly realized that
the opportunities and experiences were endless
here at Ryerson and in the GCM program. In the
past four years, not only was I able to deepen my
passion for the printing industry but was able
to network and meet life long colleagues and
friends. My experience would have been nothing
comparable without the amazing encounters that
have shaped who I am today.
One of my greatest accomplishments in GCM
was having the opportunity to complete my
internship program in Japan. When I first
started looking for internship opportunities, I
was focusing on finding a placement in Canada,
either in Ontario or Alberta. However, when I
found out that I was able to do an internship
overseas, I could not resist the opportunity.
To this day, this was one of the best decisions
that I’ve made during my four years as a GCM
student. The experience and connections I
made were one of a kind, and something that I
will never forget.
The most important thing I learned from my
internship helped me deepen my understanding
of how the industry works. It also allowed me to
The most important thing I learned at my
Rather than change something about myself,
I would improve one of my weaknesses: public
I would love to see another course focused on
production course was one of my favourites
and I think that I got a lot out of it. Being able
to have a course that incorporates more of the
design aspect of the magazine industry would be
something that I think that many GCM students
would benefit from in the future.
After I graduate I hope to get a job in the field
of Graphic Communications with the hopes to
eventually be able to travel. Within the next
couple years I would like to work, save money
and travel. I think that it is so important to be
able to experience the world when you have
less responsibilities and flexibility to travel.
Traveling allows you to experience places
outside of your comfort zone and I believe that
it can help build a person’s character. Learning
What do you think
is the future of the
print industry?
I believe the future of the print industry
lies solely in digital. For now flexo and offset
lithography are the standards for production
of multiple copies of an item but digital presses
are catching up in speed and quality. This also
solves the problem of print waste as there could
be a smaller initial print run and if another
copy is needed it could be printed on demand.
Perhaps one of the biggest advantages to digital
is the lack of an extensive make-ready when
compared to traditional printing.
If you could change
one thing about
yourself, what would
it be and why?
PT
If I could change one thing about myself it would
be my organizational skills. I would describe
my personal organization skills as “organized
chaos” due to the fact that I operate fairly
disorganized but am able to find everything that
I need. However this works for the present and
down the road when I have to find something
that was completed in the past I have trouble
locating it. Fortunately my time at GCM has
taught me to become better organized and while
I am not at the point I would like to be I am
slowly achieving that goal.
What are
your greatest
at GCM?
The most important thing I learned in my
internship was to ask questions. Every project
that I worked on would represent the university
and it was important to make it a positive
reflection. In order to make the best job
possible, I would get as much information as I
could about the job, ask for clarifications, listen
to feedback and reflect on how I can improve
my work. Writing notes for every project helped
me stay organized and manage all the tasks
that I had to complete.
My greatest achievements in GCM would be my
involvement in student associations and campus
events. Starting at GCM, I focused mainly on
my academics and adjusting to university life.
I still continue to focus on my academics but I
also know it’s important to make networks and
get involved on campus. I’m glad to be a part of
something bigger than me that will continue on
after I graduate from Ryerson.
Since I have done my internship abroad in
China, I have noticed that every country has a
whole different set of culture. Therefore when
facing clients, it is important to notice their
needs and communicate with them for better
understanding. Also, I learned that we should
pay more attention to the related product around
us, for example, Coca-Cola usually produces a
customizable and limited-edition Christmas
product to fit the needs of each person.
What is your plan
after graduation?
T
After graduating in 2019, I have planned
a working holiday trip to Asia or Europe.
Throughout the trip, I hope to meet many new
people and gain more useful experience to open
up my mind-set and get myself ready for future
career development. After the trip, I hope to
find a job related to Graphic Communication
Management program, which can challenge
and motivate myself, also I hope to improve the
current packaging industry.
What is the most
After completing a few jobs as a project manager
at Marks, I found that clear communication
significantly aided my success in my work
environment. In project management, effective
conveyance of ideas is so important because the
nature of the job is largely communication-based
– whether that communication is with clients,
designers, managers, or other colleagues. I
found that honing this skill incited higher
quality results in my work, which in turn helped
me succeed through the course of my internship.
After graduation, I plan to work in the industry
while I further my education in the form of
another degree or diploma. While my interests
lie in the graphic communications field, I
am fascinated by mechanical engineering
and other technical sciences. I think that
a combination of expertise in graphic
communications management and mechanical
engineering would put me in a position to
work in exciting, specialized roles that would
leave me feeling satisfied with myself and my
at GCM?
JU
Entering Ryerson, I was eager to learn about
an industry that many young people overlook.
I was excited to start a new chapter in my life.
I was a quiet, young female who usually kept to
herself. As the years went on, I slowly tried new
things. If you told me that I was going to be on
the GCM Course Union for two years in a row, go
to Germany for Interpack, and go to Florida for
the TLMI annual meeting, I definitely would not
have believed you. I am proud to have become
more confident, and to have learned so much
about the printing industry.
My greatest accomplishments during my
post-secondary years would be balancing work,
school and extracurriculars. During second and
third year, I worked a minimum of 25 hours a
week, on top of a full course load. This proved
challenging, but I would not have changed a
thing. I learned to manage my time better,
prioritize my tasks, and gained life skills that I
could not have gained just in school. In addition
to this, I kept up my GPA to keep the CPISTF
Scholarship all four years, and achieved the
TLMI Scholarship in 2018.
Describe the moment
you realized “what
What motivated you?
What is your plan
after graduation?
Growing up I have always been intrigued by the
design of packages in grocery stores, billboard
signs, book covers and more. When assigned
projects at school, I would put an equal emphasis
on both creativity (in terms of design and overall
presentation), as well as content. I highly value
the job it takes to build a successful project and
enjoy the challenges, lessons, and achievements
that come along the way.
After graduation, I plan to continue building
on the skills I have gained at Ryerson. With the
level of ongoing innovation in today’s industry,
there are various and endless amount of routes
one can take, especially with creativity and
design. Because of my increased fascination and
confidence under various areas in industry, I
hope to attain a future where I am able to apply
those skills while I constantly learn and grow.
Since my first year at Ryerson, I have changed
exponentially, not only as a person, but with
pleased with myself for my accomplishments
and achievements that I have gained. During my
the years have gone by, I have noticed that I have
excelled in all my classes demonstrating that
My greatest achievement at GCM would be my
Canadian Printing Industries Scholarship Trust
Fund award. This scholarship has demonstrated
my determination as I have maintained a GPA
above 3.0 throughout my four years at Ryerson.
This award is an acknowledgement of the hard
If you could add
What is your plan
after graduation?
If I could add a new course to GCM, it would
be a finance course. The course would make
GCM students better managers in the future.
Financial management will teach GCM
students about cash flow management, which
involves keeping accurate records of expenses
and income, understanding and keeping track
of the company’s financial activities, and
composing all of the financial information into
useful reports for management.
After graduation, my plans are to travel around
the world to immerse myself in different cultures
and meet new people around the world before I
settle down. I would go back-packing in Europe
and Asia. By back-packing, I will gain valuable
life experiences and develop a variety of useful
skills to perform my duties in my future career.
Taking time off to travel around the world could
help me pave my career path.
have changed
since your first
My first year was actually back in 2014, before
I decided to switch to the current curriculum
at GCM. That year, I started a program that
I wasn’t even entirely sure about. Little did I
know how much was involved within the world
of print. Fast forward to 2019, I have learned
and experienced more than I thought I would
from knowledgeable professors, alongside
such talented and supportive peers. Ever since
starting my university career, I always told
myself and others that I couldn’t imagine myself
in any other university program.
industry forever, but I hope to take what I
learned from school, gain even more experience,
and put it all towards my life-long project.
Something that I’m very grateful for from
this program is that we had the opportunity
to learn all different aspects of the industry,
and everything that I’ve learned is somehow
beneficial to almost any career out there.
My internship showed me that learning never
What motivated you?
What is your plan
Z
I discovered my love of design when I was in
grade 11, during my yearbook class. It was my
first time using Adobe Creative software and it
allowed me to realize that there is something
beyond traditional art. From there, I joined
different types of creative activities and clubs to
feed my passion. This journey really broadened
my perspective of what is possible in this
creative industry that is constantly changing
and developing. At GCM, I learned to combine
my joy of helping others and my creativity, and
decided to become a great leader no matter what
job my new journey will take me.
My greatest accomplishment at GCM is
getting on the Dean’s List, finishing my
concentration, minor and my internship, and
all the new skills and knowledge I acquired.
But most importantly, all the lifelong friends
and relationship I have made. They really
helped and encouraged me during these four
years, through happy times and sad times,
they always supported me. GCM allowed me to
