Hello Spring!
It’s March and that means all things Spring! Spring break, Spring
training, and clocks spring forward.
Our City Person this month is Sharon DiPietro. She is
Chairman of the Board for the Tri-County Animal Rescue, and
the Chair of the 17th Annual Doggie & Kittie Ball. Her passion
for animals is contagious and admirable. Read about Sharon and her
incredible work inside this issue.
St. Patrick’s Day is Sunday, March 17th, but the celebrations are
all weekend long in Delray Beach! Beginning on Friday the Pre-Party
begins at 5pm, continues on Saturday with an all day festival from
10 am to 6 pm at the Delray Beach Tennis Center - and admission is
all ages. The official start time for the parade on Saturday is 2pm. For
more information visit www.delraystpatricksfestival.com or Facebook
Our recipe this month is an Corned Beef and Cabbage - an Irish
classic with a little Italian flair, as created by Chef Michel Menna from Il
Contadino Restaurante located in the Pineapple Grove District. Try it!
Diane Feen visits Scuola Vecchia for the most authentic Neapolitan
pizza this side of the Atlantic Ocean! Sharon and Shaun Aliosio
imported a pizza oven from Naples and Sharon is trained in the
traditional Napolitano style of making pizzas. Check out our
Restaurant Review and plan a visit - make sure you go hungry!
See you on the Ave!
Delray Beach to
Ban Plastic Straws
City-Wide by 2020
The City of Delray Beach received the
green light to proceed with its plastic
straw ban. The City Commission unanimously
passed the ordinance restricting
the distribution of plastic straws at all
restaurant and beverage establishments
at the February 5 Commission meeting.
Delray Beach is the first city in Palm Beach
County to enact this ban.
Effective February 6, 2019, food service
establishments and bars will only be permitted to provide plastic
straws to patrons that request them, although straws that are
marine biodegradable, such as paper or bamboo straws, and reusable
metal or glass straws are permissible. Effective January
1, 2020, all plastic straws will be prohibited. Exceptions have
been made for patrons with medical needs and for places such as
hospitals, nursing facilities, schools and products pre-packaged
with straws and produced outside the city. After January 1, 2020,
establishments could face a $100 fine for the first offensive in a
12-month period, $200 for a second offense in a 12-month period
and up to $500 for the third offense in a 12-month period.
Last summer, the City of Delray Beach Office of Sustainability
launched a “Skip the Straw” campaign involving the Delray Beach
Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Development Authority to
help engage with Delray Beach’s downtown bars and restaurants
and bring awareness to the impacts of single-use plastic straws.
To date, many local establishments have discontinued providing
plastic straws and approximately 20 have already voluntarily
switched to paper straws.
“Plastic straws, while a small component of the broad singleuse
plastic problem, are a significant detriment to marine life,
including sea turtles, fish and birds, which ingest small plastic
pieces and often die,” says Dr. Ana Puszkin-Chevlin, the City’s Sustainability
Officer. “The Skip the Straw campaign and the supporting
ordinance are a first step to raising awareness of the impact
single-use plastic and taking actions to modify consumer behavior
that adversely impacts the environment.”
Delray Beach joins approximately 11 other cities nationwide,
including neighboring Deerfield Beach, Fort Lauderdale and
Hallandale Beach in tackling the use of plastic straws and other
single-use plastic part of their environmental stewardship initiatives.
The campaign against plastic straws gained national momentum
throughout 2018 as ocean advocacy groups brought attention
to the 8 million tons of consumer plastic dumped into the
oceans annually.
BY Holli Brisson, realtor ®
By way of introduction, I am Holli Rooney Brisson.
My family has lived in Delray Beach and
Boynton Beach since the early 1960s. I have
witnessed tremendous growth, and have forged
many lifelong relationships throughout the years. I
graduated Florida State University, and started my
retail/wholesale career in Atlanta, which also took
me to New Jersey and Orlando, then finally back
home to Boynton Beach. I have been the Office
Manager and Agent Coordinator with Posh Properties
for more than three years. In October 2017,
I earned my Real Estate License and am excited
about the possibilities of introducing my hometown
to new Florida residents. Let a local represent you
while selling or buying your home. When not working
I love being on the water; snorkeling, fishing,
or just soaking up the sun. I am involved with an
Annual Elks fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis, I also
volunteer with other charities and church events.
I look forward to being your “Hometown Realtor.”
oxygen
regenerative care
hyperbaric center
BY Dr. Ray Crallé
My name is Ray Crallé and I have been
treating people here in Delray Beach since
I graduated from the University of Iowa in
1971 with my graduate degree in Physical Therapy.
I started one of the first privately owned Physical
Therapy centers in Palm Beach County. In the blink of
an eye we grew to 13 centers focused on out patient
sports medicine. I was lucky to meet Dr. Richard
Neubauer, pioneer of Hyperbaric Oxygen treatments
in Ft. Lauderdale, who convinced me to open my own
HBO center here in Delray Beach more than 15 years
ago. The combination of these two areas, rehab and
the healing effects of HBO have proven to be very
powerful answers for many various conditions from
concussion, stroke and other neurological issues to
rapid recovery of athletic injuries. We now attract
patients from around the world. There is an eightfold
increase in your own stem cells, and startling
effects on pain and other inflammation in the body
by hyperbaric treatment that reduces the needs for
opioids. We are involved in exciting advances in the
treatment of Alzheimer’s and dementia. Please call
for a free consult and tour of my center.
Delray Under $50
Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene,
it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or
restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach
offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back
restaurants, and events for the whole family or
nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do
in Delray Beach in March for $50 or less.
When I see food, I eat it. When I see wine, I drink it. March
is National Nutrition Month and is a great time to get
back to what matters: seafood and wine, and their many
health benefits, naturally. The Delray Beach Wine & Seafood Festival
is back by popular demand and offers guests weekend culinary
extravaganza. Not only will you be privy to a diverse menu of delicious
seafood including lobster rolls, creole platters, conch ceviche
and much more, you’ll also be able to enjoy wines from Amarone to
Zinfandel. As if that’s not enough, there are also 100 exhibitors featuring
arts and crafts, live music, a wine garden and craft beer area,
and wine and food pairing seminars from top chefs from local restaurants
and vintners from internationally renowned wineries. Admission
is free but if you feel like shelling out a little cash, opt for a
ticket to The Wine Down Garden. For $50 you’re able to wine down
in a new intimate space featuring a luxurious garden area with 20
wines to sample from old and new world wines from around the
world, with unlimited sampling for two hours. The Delray Beach
Wine & Seafood Festival is held Saturday, March 9 from 11am to
11pm and Sunday, March 10 from 11am to 6pm at the Old School
Square Pavilion Grounds, 51 N. Swinton Ave. Visit www.wineandseafoodfest.com
for additional information, a detailed outline of
the schedule, and to purchase seminar tickets.
Let’s get crafty! March is National Craft Month and if you need a
little inspiration before dusting off that old jar of Mod Podge,
you’re in luck. The good people at Arts Warehouse are hosting
a Green ARTery, which is a pop-up plant, flower and arts/maker
sale, activities and event. You are invited to swing by and check out
one-of-a-kind plant and flower inspired wares including food and
beverage, clothing, household wares, art work, living plants and
flowers, and more. You and your imagination are encouraged to
run wild and mix with local art makers and shakers so you can get
some inspiration for your own art project, or to find a piece for your
home or office or cloffice (closet-office because apparently now
that’s a thing). You are also able to check out the Artist in Resident
Studios and the current Arts Warehouse Exhibition too, so you have
a great opportunity to fully immerse yourself in all that the Warehouse
has to offer. This free event is held Saturday, March 23 from
10am to 3pm and you can expect to enjoy music, bites and sips. The
Arts Warehouse is located at 313 NE Third St. Visit www.artswarehouse.org
or call (561) 330-9614 for more information.
Go green or go home! The St. Patrick’s Day Parade
is back again this year for two fun-filled days of
celebrations so by the time St. Patrick’s
Day rolls around on Sunday, March 17, you’ll be
ready to relax and kick back with some corned
beef and cabbage
and a Guinness.
The event begins
on Friday,
March 15 with
the free Friday
Night Parade Pre-
Party from 5 to
10pm. Held at the
Delray Beach Tennis
Center, enjoy live music,
cold drinks and lots
of food trucks with a few
hundred of your local neighbors.
But, make sure you’re
ready for Saturday, March
16 because the Parade is
the highlight of the event.
There will be live music,
entertainment, games, vendors
and more at the Tennis
Center from 10am to 5pm, but
make sure to have a good spot
along the Avenue because the
parade starts at 2pm. The parade
proudly features local nonprofit
organizations, businesses,
schools, civic organizations, veterans,
police, firefighters and EMS
from all across the nation and
even as far as Australia, Belgium,
Canada, France, Ireland and Switzerland. It’s going to be a
great weekend! The Delray Beach Tennis Center is located at
more information.
Let’s face it, we all have ideas but a lot of them aren’t as
good as others. Fortunately,
we do have a winning idea
in our own backyard. March is
International Ideas Month and
Arts Warehouse has another
winner with their Art Lab
| yoga re-stART program.
Held Saturday, March 9
from 10:30 to 11:30am,
you’re invited to
relax and unwind
in a perfectly
crafted
space with a
few fellow friends.
Instructor Katie Mitchell
will lead an all-levels
Vinyasa yoga class in the
back room gallery that promises
to leave you feeling refreshed and renewed. The class will
begin with a myofascial release as you work through muscle
tension using Yoga Tune Up Therapy Balls and a slow, mindful
yoga flow. So instead of trying to squeeze in yoga on your living
room floor in between weekend chores and to-do lists, give
into the great idea of treating yourself to a perfectly planned
class in an art gallery. (Your body is a piece of art, right? Zinger.)
Tickets are $15 per person including online registration
fees, and you’re only asked to bring a mat, towel and water.
And, of course, an open and clear mind. The Arts Warehouse
is located at 313 NE Third St. Visit www.artswarehouse.org
or call (561) 330-9614 for more information and to register.
Quinoa or QuinWOW? Quinoa is gluten-free, high in protein
and one of the few plant foods that contain all nine
essential amino acids. So, yeah, that’s why you’ve been
seeing it everywhere. March is Quinoa Month and is a great
time to reconnect with this superfood and treat your body to
all of that good, good. Thankfully the local restaurants are up
on their food trends so if you don’t feel like making quinoa at
home, you sure don’t have to. Start your healthy journey at
PurGreens with their Quinoa Earth Bowl with quinoa, farro,
arugula, tomatoes, corn, chickpeas, broccoli, white cheddar,
roasted chicken and a pesto vinaigrette for $14. Or, take a stab
at Park Tavern’s Kale & Quinoa Salad with pumpkin seeds,
cranberries, roasted chicken and feta for $14. If you’re still
hungry for more, head to Whole Green Cafe and enjoy their
Quinoa Bowl with quinoa, tomato, cucumber, purple cabbage,
carrots, avocado, roasted veggies and a cilantro, lime, yogurt
and garlic dressing for $11.95. Or, check out Deck 84’s Quinoa
Power Bowl with tri-trim-color organic quinoa, broccoli, kale,
radicchio, carrot, avocado, L&W Farms tomato and a citrus
vinaigrette for $16. Whatever your quinoa pleasure, you’re
definitely covered. Visit www.downtowndelraybeach.com for
The Stranger Diaries
by Elly Griffiths
Released March 5
“Utterly bewitching. This atmospheric, intricate
thriller, a pitch-perfect modern Gothic,
chilled my blood and warmed my heart.
As unforgettable as it is original.” - A.J. Finn
Clare Cassidy is no stranger to murder. A
high school English teacher specializing in
the Gothic writer R. M. Holland, she teaches
a course on it every year. But when one of
Clare’s colleagues and closest friends is
found dead, with a line from R. M. Holland’s
most famous story, “The Stranger,” left by
her body, Clare is horrified to see her life
collide with the storylines of her favorite
literature.
To make matters worse, the police suspect
the killer is someone Clare knows. Unsure
whom to trust, she turns to her closest
confidant, her diary, the only outlet she has
for her darkest suspicions and fears about
the case. Then one day she notices something
odd. Writing that isn’t hers, left on the
page of an old diary:
Hallo Clare. You don’t know me.
Clare becomes more certain than ever:
“The Stranger” has come to terrifying life.
But can the ending be rewritten in time?
A Place for Us
by Fatima Farheen Mirza
Released March 5
As an Indian wedding gathers a family
back together, parents Rafiq and Layla must
reckon with the choices their children have
made. There is Hadia: their headstrong, eldest
daughter, whose marriage is a match
of love and not tradition. Huda, the middle
child, determined to follow in her sister’s
footsteps. And lastly, their estranged son,
Amar, who returns to the family fold for the
first time in three years to take his place as
brother of the bride. What secrets and betrayals
have caused this close-knit family to
fracture? Can Amar find his way back to the
people who know and love him best?
A Place for Us takes us back to the beginning
of this family’s life: from the bonds
that bring them together, to the differences
that pull them apart. All the joy and struggle
of family life is here, from Rafiq and
Layla’s own arrival in America from India,
to the years in which their children—each
in their own way—tread between two
cultures, seeking to find their place in the
world, as well as a path home.
A Place for Us is a book for our times: an
astonishingly tender-hearted novel of identity
and belonging, and a resonant portrait
of what it means to be an American family
today. It announces Fatima Farheen Mirza
as a major new literary talent.
And Then You Were
Gone: A Novel
by R. J. Jacobs
Released March 13
After years of learning how to manage
her bipolar disorder, Emily Firestone finally
has it under control. Even better, her
life is coming together: she’s got a great
job, her own place, and a boyfriend, Paolo,
who adores her. So when Paolo suggests a
weekend sailing trip, Emily agrees—wine,
water, and the man she loves? What could
be better? But when Emily wakes the
morning after they set sail, the boat is still
adrift…and Paolo is gone.
A strong swimmer, there’s no way Paolo
drowned, but Emily is at a loss for any other
explanation. Where else could he have
gone? And why? As the hours and days
pass by, each moment marking Paolo’s
disappearance, Emily’s hard-won stability
begins to slip.
But when Emily uncovers evidence suggesting
Paolo was murdered, the investigation
throws her mania into overdrive, even
as she becomes a person of interest in her
own personal tragedy. To clear her name,
Emily must find the truth—but can she
hold onto her own sanity in the process?
Redemption Point: A
Crimson Lake Novel
by Candice Fox
Released March 19
When former police detective Ted Conkaffey
was wrongly accused of abducting
Claire Bingley, he hoped the Queensland
rainforest town of Crimson Lake would be
a good place to disappear. But nowhere is
safe from Claire’s devastated father.
Dale Bingley has a brutal revenge plan
all worked out - and if Ted doesn’t help find
the real abductor, he’ll be its first casualty.
Meanwhile, in a dark roadside hovel
called the Barking Frog Inn, the bodies
of two young bartenders lie on the beersodden
floor. It’s Detective Inspector Pip
Sweeney’s first homicide investigation
- complicated by the arrival of private
detective Amanda Pharrell to ‘assist’ on
the case. Amanda’s conviction for murder
a decade ago has left her with some odd
behavioral traits, top-to-toe tatts - and a
keen eye for killers...
For Ted and Amanda, the hunt for
the truth will draw them into a violent
dance with evil. Redemption is certainly
in the cards - but it may well cost them
their lives...
Non-Surgical Approach
To A Herniated Disc
The medical phrase “herniated disc” is widely used to describe injury to
the spine. It refers to the incidence of derangement within the spinal
column in which there is injury to the spongy cushions (discs) between
the individual bones (vertebrae). Herniated discs are most common
when a person is in their thirties of forties however it can affect any age
group especially when the aging population is active.
It is most notably associated with the lumbar region (lower
back) but can also affect the cervical region (neck) and
thoracic (mid back) region with less prevalence.
Quite often herniated discs in the lumbar region will
produce sciatica (leg pain) and in the cervical region
will produce arm pain. Dysesthesias (numbness
and tingling) in the arms and legs are also
associated with lesions involving the spinal discs.
The disc itself lies between two adjacent vertebrae
and is composed of a hard outer shell called
the annulus and a gelatinous substance on
the inside called the nucleus. The nucleus
provides key structural support elements
for the spine as it acts as a “shock
absorber” for the spine so that the vertebrae
do not touch each other. The
cushion also creates a space between
the vertebrae so that the spinal nerves
can exit unharmed. However, the nucleus
also contains certain chemical irritants such
as tumor necrosis factor-alpha which can be
toxic for nerves. Therefore it is of paramount
importance that it remains within its shell. The
annulus acts as the outer shell or barrier and is a
resilient tissue made up of fibrocartilage.
A herniated disc occurs when fissures (tears)
form in the annulus or outer shell which allows
for the nucleus to escape and get into dangerously
close contact with the spinal nerves. The most offensive
posture for the lumbar disc is sitting. This
provides the greatest load on the disc and increases
probability of herniation. Therefore sedentary
lifestyles and jobs requiring prolonged
sitting are deleterious for the discs. Other activities
such as bending and twisting are also very
damaging to the discs especially if repetitive. Lastly, acute events
such as lifting something very heavy without proper support can
injure the spinal discs.
The “gold standard” for conservative, non-invasive treatment
of disc herniations is non-surgical spinal decompression
therapy. This treatment acts to create a negative pressure
or vacuum within the spinal canal essentially retracting
some of the disc material back into the annulus and away
from the sensitive spinal nerves. In fact the pressure within
the disc can get to minus 150 mm/HG. The most recent
clinical study of 219 patients has showed
that spinal decompression therapy
provided an immediate resolution
of symptoms for 86% of
the participants while 84%
remained pain free 90
days post-treatment. In
combination with a revolutionary
modality termed
class IV highpower laser
therapy which accelerates tissue
healing by tenfold through
“kick-starting” the cellular machinery
in the injured tissue, the outcomes
are even more staggering. Core strengthening
specifically designed for a disc herniation
(which differs from other lumbar spine injuries)
should not be ignored and should be a
part of any protocol for injured discs.
Vanquish Your
Imperfections
As summer fades in South Florida, the zest for diet, exercise
and alluring shape only accelerates. “If I could just be one
size smaller,” is not reserved for swimsuits. We are a people
addicted to healthy, fit bodies and beautiful contours, and now,
those of us who pine for any easy fix to love handles, muffin tops
and man boobs have a resource that seems too good to be true.
The technology is called Vanquish, a completely non-invasive
procedure to annihilate fat cells using radio frequency.
Dermatology and Laser Medicine claim it as an enormous
breakthrough. There is no surgery involved and no needles are required;
in fact, the procedure is completely pain free. The machine
never even touches the patient’s skin. Deep tissue heating without
damaging skin or muscle effects measurable results in this FDA approved
approach to the destruction of fat cells. Results can be seen
after just four sessions of forty-five minutes each.
Vanquish fat melting sessions are controlled and comfortable.
The dermatologist will adjust the laser to hover over the areas of
the body to be treated, never touching the machine to the skin. The
heat produced from the laser will feel warm, never hot, and will
resemble the sensation of a heating pad on the belly. Sensors built
into the device “tune” the patient’s fat and customize the energy
required for each patient’s treatment session.
The science involved is simple. Once the fat cells have been
overheated, they die off and are filtered through the
lymphatic system, metabolized in the liver and then
excreted through urine. For this process to be effective,
patients are asked to drink plenty of water before
and after the procedure, aiding in the elimination of
dead fat. Some minimal redness may occur at the site
of the procedure, but swelling is extremely unlikely.
Patients are not reporting any contraindications.
They are losing two to four inches after four treatments
without changing their diets or increasing exercise.
Of course there are skeptics, but the ease of delivery
for Vanquish speaks bundles about its ability to
please patients. Unlike the other fat buster technologies
of the last thirty years, treatments don’t involve
downtime or discomfort for the patient. Liposuction,
while capable of eradicating larger volumes of
fat, requires anesthesia and surgery and sometimes
delivers uneven results. Ultrasound, in which a hand
piece is moved around the body to destroy fat with
deep-diving sound waves, generally requires pain medication.
Cryotherapthy, which freezes fat cells, does work, but is a slow
process for both the patient and the technician and requires a
significant time commitment. Vanquish, from all sides, seems to
be the fat busting venue of the future.
Vanquish is new, exciting and full of promise. Today it is eliminating
beer bellies and love handles.
Tomorrow it will reach to contour flabby arms and fatty necks.
From the point of view of the dermatologist, this is very “cool”
technology; from the point of view of the patient, this may be the
hottest technique on the planet for looking good.
Fasting (IF), how it works and why I love it!
Live on Vacation
Florida’s Most Desired Downtown Location
When I began learning about this concept, it was difficult
believing this way of eating could be so beneficial. Skipping
breakfast, letting hours go by without eating!? No
way!? But after doing lots of research and practicing Intermittent
Fasting for several years, I can share how IF can make reaching
your fitness goals a bit easier by turning on your body’s fat burning
mode and help you become healthier.
So what type of “diet” is this, might you ask? Well, it’s not a diet
it’s actually a pattern. Intermittent Fasting is an eating pattern that
cycles between periods of fasting and eating. It does not give you particular
foods you should eat, but rather when you should eat. Don’t
let the term “fasting” scare you. Fasting actually allows the body to
function more efficiently and literally helps turn your body into a fat
burning machine. Not only is it super beneficial for fat burning, it has
other amazing health benefits as well. IF is efficient at lowering insulin
resistance (perfect for people concerned about Type 2 Diabetes).
It helps reduce stress and inflammation in the body, which is beneficial
in helping to starve cancer cells. IF also backs the research of
lowering your risk of Alzheimer’s (something that runs on both sides
of my family) and increases brain health and function. Personally, I
think more clearly and have much more energy before I put food in
my body. Go figure, right? The list of health benefits goes on and on.
If you are interested in learning more about these IF health benefits,
I urge you to do some research of your own.
62 | march 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
In addition, IF allows to simplify your eating. I am no longer consumed
with food and what and when I need to be eating. Life just
seems a little simpler when you aren’t worried about breakfast
while getting kids and yourself out of the house. A feat any busy
person can understand. What does skipping breakfast have to do
with all of this? Skipping breakfast extends the amount of time that
you are in the fasting state. While you are sleeping your body is
in a fasting state. That’s why breakfast is called “break-fast.” Skipping
breakfast extends the time your body is in fat burning mode.
Experts recommend fasting for at least 16 hours from the time of
your last meal. So if you ate dinner at 7pm your next meal should
be at 11am the following day. By letting your body “fast” and giving
it a break from being fed constantly it allows for amazing health
benefits to start taking place.
There are several different methods/ways to incorporate Intermittent
Fasting into your lifestyle. This is not a one size fits all type
of plan and there are many different methods to suit individual
needs. Do some research and find a version that will work best with
your needs, goals and lifestyle.
All dry usa
Winning for Homeowners
by Jenna Wylie and Elissa Weiser-McVeigh | Photos courtesy of all dry usa
14,000 people in the U.S experience a water damage emergency
in their home EACH DAY. Do you know how to identify water
damage in your home? It is crucial you know the following facts
to insure you protect your home, health, family, and investments.
When you have any water damage or mold concerns, call
All Dry USA to schedule your FREE leak and damage
inspection. They send a Property Damage Inspector to
your home to assess the situation, and give you your best options
on how to proceed.
“Sometimes it is nothing, but often the issue is much bigger than
you think. Allow our expert staff to guide you; better to be safe than
sorry,” said Elissa Weiser McVeigh, Creative Director.
If your house floods, you have a water damage emergency, however
it is not always that obvious. Extensive damages that can occur
from a small leak: toilet overflows with contaminated water,
appliance leaks seep behind cabinetry, hot water heater bursts and
travels into baseboards and drywall, A/C leak and roof leaks cause
interior damages, etc.
IMPORTANT: Signs of excess moisture, water damage and what
to look for:
• Paint bubbling on your wall
• Water stains on drywall, baseboards or cabinetry
• Buckling of wood floors
• Loose tiles
• Discolored grout
• Baseboards separating from wall
• Musty smells or odors
Did you know that MOLD can begin to grow just 24 hours after
a water leak if not properly handled? As soon as your find a leak,
call All Dry USA. They have the knowledge, tools, and machines to
dry out the affected areas with the intention of preventing mold
growth. There are many different types of mold.
“I laugh when people say, well most mold is not Toxic. Whether
or not the particular mold you have is toxic, exposure to all types of
mold will negatively affect your health and the health of your home
and will continue to spread until it is REMOVED,” said Elissa. All Dry
USA holds a mold remediation license, which is a LEGAL requirement
to remove mold at a property in Florida.
In addition to being Mold Remediators, All Dry USA are licensed
General Contractors. They truly have a complete understanding of
the scope of work, and what it takes to fully restore your property
safely and back to its pre-loss condition. To your advantage, they
have an in-house Claims Department, who are extremely knowledgeable
on the insurance claim process. All Dry USA works for
YOU, but collects payment from your insurance company (submits
detailed documentation and estimates to insurance directly.)
“All Dry USA works for you, where as insurance company’s ven-
dors work for them. - Conflict of Interest?” said Jenna Wylie,
Marketing and Business Development Specialist.
Their motto is, “One call and we do it all.” Once the mold has
been remediated, All Dry USA’s job doesn’t stop there. When
your insurance payment is received they remodel your home
and make it even better than before. How is this possible you
ask? Most appliance and plumbing leaks are COVERED insurance
claims. Yes, one small disposal leak can lead to a payment
for your entire kitchen remodel. Lucky for you, you don’t need
to have an insurance loss to hire them for your next remodel.
They have many payment options.
All Dry USA’s Construction Team adds over 35 years of
knowledge to the company. Their re-construction department
specializes in Kitchen and Bathroom remodels: plumbing, tile,
cabinetry, and flooring. Their Roofing Department also offers
with their customers. The client’s vision is manifested from
thought, to computer generated design (create 3-D Renderings),
“Our Senior Purchaser and Project Coordinators purchase
materials, and plan deliveries which allows the construction
team to focus on job execution and customer satisfaction. All
of our Department Supervisors are skilled tradesmen who are
actively on the job sites managing our crews,” said Elissa.
states, All Dry USA is not a franchise. All locations have one
owner who is local to Delray Beach. All Dry USA is here for
DR. ZARINA STALLER
A Dental Office
Where You Come First
by diane feen | Photos by Kevin Hanson
Dr. Zarina Staller likes to do
things in a big way. She went
to Dental school in Bogota,
Colombia and established a
successful dental practice there.
But when her family moved to
the United States she decided to
settle in South Florida.
Armed with her D.D.S. from Colegio Odontologico she embarked
on a new journey at Nova Southeastern University
School of Dental Medicine. It is at Nova that she received her
D.M.D. Degree with honors.
“I was so focused on doing well in dental school that I did nothing
but study and immerse myself in learning everything I could,” said
the personable energetic dentist.
It paid off.
While at Nova she received the Academy of General Dentistry
Award for being the most outstanding student in the dental school.
She was also selected by the administration as a Presidential Knight
to represent the University at special events.
Not only did Dr. Staller graduate with honors, but she has been
a teacher of cosmetic dentistry at Nova Southeastern University
School of Dental Medicine for the past 17 years.
But that’s only part of the resume of a woman who takes the
practice of dentistry to a fine art. “My father was an Oral Surgeon
in Colombia and I grew up helping in his practice. Many of my relatives
were in the dental field, so it was natural for me to become a
dentist. I love my profession.”
You bet she does. Dr. Staller not only has a full-time practice in the
Addison Place in Delray, but she also does dentistry for the military.
“Once or twice a month I travel to military installations around the
country to do dental work for servicemen and women being deployed.
We might see 300 to 500 patients in a weekend, but I love it.”
You would think that a dental professional with a thriving practice
in the Delray area would be content to work two jobs. But Dr.
Staller is not your average dentist. She thrives on challenges and
rises to meet them with élan.
She also does volunteer dentistry at The Caridad Center and is
a professional underwater photographer. Her photos have won
awards and are sparkling examples of the inherent beauty of Mother
Nature’s finest deep-sea wonders. There are times when you might
be shocked at her bravery. “I went 145 feet down to take pictures of
sharks,” she says with a smile. There are also stills of a Cayman Island
turtle and brilliant photos of anemones from the underbelly of Egypt.
But that’s only the tip of the iceberg – or ocean life – for this
dedicated dental professional with the upbeat modern office in
Addison Place.
“My dental practice is a boutique style where personal attention
is at its zenith. I practice dentistry like dentists did in years
before. From the moment patients come into the office I am with
them. I listen to their fears and problems and am very honest in
assessing treatment.”
While some dental practices tend to do lots of root canals andsurgical
procedures, Dr. Staller is more conservative in her approach
to care. “I had one patient come to me very upset because
she was told she needed a lot of expensive dental work. I examined
her and found she did not need surgery. I fixed her teeth in a
more affordable way without surgery and with less discomfort.”
Dr. Staller specializes in cosmetic dentistry and is steeped in
the age-old habit of seeing each patient on a one-to-one basis. “I
spoil my patients and spend a lot of time with each of them. I was
one of the first dentists in the area to offer computerized anesthesia
and I attend the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry
conference every year in order to further my education.”
She also prides herself on spending time with each patient to
make sure they get the right treatment customized for them. Dr.
Staller offers porcelain and composite veneers but is open and honest
about which one meets the budgetary needs of each patient.
One size does not fit all here.
And that’s a good thing. “I try to find the best solution for each
patient. Dentistry is not about the money. I give my patients an
honest opinion about what they need. We practice compassionate
care here from head to heart.”
If you ask Jean Marie Angelora she’ll attest to that. She’s been going
to Dr. Staller for 11 years for all her dental needs. “Everyone here
is very friendly and it’s comfortable. I never have pain and the doctor
is thorough and well qualified. My husband also comes to Dr. Staller.”
Alexandra B agrees. “I have spent almost 50 years being frightened
of the dentist, but I can easily recommend this lovely doctor
and her office. Everyone is gracious, kind and knowledgeable about
what they do and how to best assist the patient. Dr. Staller even reshaped
some of my teeth at no charge, so I would feel better about
going to a family event. I look forward to going back - that might be
the first time I’ve ever said that about a dentist.”
There are dozens of impressive testimonials and endorsements
about Dr. Staller. And she deserves them. But her expertise doesn’t
stop at general dentistry. You can also get inlays and onlays, bonding,
fillings, crowns, bridges, cleaning, laser therapy for gum disease
and other treatments.
Kevin sums it up quite well. “Finally, a dentist that focuses on me!
A true dental boutique. You won’t find anything like this anywhere.
No more feeling like I’m part of an assembly line. I have Dr. Staller’s
undivided attention and her complete focus is on my treatment and
my satisfaction. No matter how nervous I am about a procedure Dr.
Staller immediately puts me at ease. And her work is immaculate.
A true artist. She recently expertly repaired a crown where other
doctors wanted to replace it with a new one. It’s an experience like
you’ve never had with any other dentist.”
Conde Center for Chiropractic Neurology
Serious About Your Health
By diane feen | Photos by melissa korman
At the Conde Center for Chiropractic Neurology, chiropractic
medicine is serious business. “Our brand of healing is less
fluff and more precision, accuracy, and results driven.”
The Conde Center for Chiropractic Neurology is backed by a
standard of excellence that is unparalleled. “Our treatment
modalities and techniques are based on the latest clinical
research. We focus on conditions that are difficult to solve,” said
Dr. John Conde, Board-Certified Chiropractic Neurologist and Diplomate
of the American Chiropractic Neurology Board.
As one of the few Board-Certified Chiropractic Neurologists, Dr.
Conde’s approach to healing utilizes advanced neurological rehabilitation
protocols combined with traditional orthopedic medicine.
“The conditions we treat are often difficult to solve (and diverse
in nature) due to the world-class neurological and orthopedic treatment
options,” said the doctor. The conditions can range from disc
herniations, sciatica, spinal stenosis, numbness-tingling to stroke,
traumatic brain injury and dizziness.
“We help people get out of injury– and go from pain and dysfunction
to wellness,” said Dr. Conde, a Summa Cum Laude graduate
and Valedictorian of his class at Parker College of Chiropractic
in Dallas, Texas.
They sure do. Just ask Peter, a patient at the Conde Center. “I’ve
had neck and shoulder issues for years and have tried all types of
therapies. I just started with the Conde Center and I’m already in
much less pain and I’m sleeping through the night. Dr. Conde is
great, and Megan is awesome. They pulled me back from the brink
of disability into a functional state.”
“In order to achieve positive outcomes for our patients - and attain
a high standard of consistent excellence - you have to employ
and elite team of doctors and chiropractic assistants and invest in
state-of-the-art equipment.”
Dr. Conde is grateful to have Dr. Robert Safranski, chiropractic
physician, on his team. “He brings expertise, innovation, and
passion to the treatment regimens instituted here. The patients
truly love him.”
Some of the therapies and treatments utilized at the Conde Center
include Class IV high power laser therapy, non-surgical spinal
decompression therapy, whole-body vibration, and orthopedic
taping to name a few.
“These modalities accelerate tissue healing by tenfold. They are
also restorative for rehabilitating injured discs, tendinitis and arthritis.
It is wonderful to work with tools that heal and not just
mask the pain. It is even more wonderful to have such a highly
trained team providing these treatments. Our chiropractic assistants
receive intensive training,” said Dr. Safranski.
According to Dr. Conde patients who come to the Conde Center
marvel at the thorough and comprehensive examinations they
receive. “We take pride in coming up with an accurate working
diagnosis and treatment plan that will resolve the problem,” said
Dr. Safranski.
Part of this comprehensive exam now includes a Functional
Movement Systems (FMS) screening provided by a new member
of the team, Arantxa “X” Velezmoro. “X” (as she is affectionately
called) is a highly certified personal trainer. FMS is invaluable
for analyzing the body movement systems. “It focuses on areas of
pathomechanics or broken-down movement and generates exercises
to stabilize these dysfunctional regions. Patients are amazed
on how foot pan can be caused by improper mechanics of the hips.”
One person who has benefited from these advanced orthopedic
treatments and FMS is Tom. “Dr. Conde’s prescribed laser, electrostim
and manipulation have helped keep this 70-year-old running. I
also highly recommend his staff personal trainer. In only 5 sessions
she helped this lifelong fitness addict improve range of motion, balance
and posture. I now do everyday activities like rising from a sitting
or kneeling position with much less strain. And, the exercises
she has given me have greatly reduced shoulder and neck tension
while improving range of motion.”
The Conde Center has recently unveiled the “Applied Clinical
Neuroscience” (ACN) Wing. The ACN department provides
cutting-edge treatment for neurological ailments such as stroke,
brain injury, dizziness-vertigo, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis,
and dystonia using breakthrough functional neurology rehabilitation
practices.
“Functional neurology is based on the groundbreaking finding of
neuroplasticity, which says the brain and nervous system can be
molded or shaped according to its environmental stimulus. The
areas of poor neurological function can be made stronger by performing
targeted therapies,” said Dr. Conde.
In order to achieve these miraculous results, the ACN wing is
outfitted with the most innovative and evidence-based equipment
to diagnose and treat these neurological conditions. One of these
tools is the Dynavision D2. It works on areas of the brain responsible
for problem solving, timing, sequencing, planning, thought
processes speed and coordination.
“When using the D2, the patient manually compresses targets
made of 64 blinking LED lights pre-set by the intelligent software.
The information is recorded, and attention is placed on
speed and sequence.”
The Dynavision D2 has been utilized in many studies; including
one the Conde Center was involved in with the Upledger Institute
and the Ricky Williams Foundation. “This study neurologically assessed
six retired National Football League players with at least
one concussion in their career. The results were astounding because
the players displayed numerous deficiencies in brain activity
and their condition improved after treatment,” said Dr. Conde.
The success of these revolutionary treatment modalities makes
Dr. Conde even more optimistic about the Conde Center’s ability to
help patients who come to the clinic with unresolved neurological
conditions. “We are treating serious problems like dementia, vertigo,
traumatic brain injuries, stroke, and even Parkinson’s disease
and seeing outstanding results.”
The Conde Center’s mission statement is centered on their
pledge to honor their patient’s patronage and trust with service,
clinical insight, and an unwavering commitment to their health
that goes beyond their highest expectations. “This is recited at our
weekly team meetings and runs deep in our team’s approach to patient
care,” said Dr. Conde.
THE SILVERBALL MUSEUM
An Homage To Fun And Fantasy
Hang out on the Silverball catwalk with a great vantage point to watch all the fun!
By diane feen | Photos by Sierra Richardson
A sparkling disco ball hangs
over the two levels of action
at the Silverball Museum.
Unlike most museums, what you see is what you can touch
and interact with. The two-level home to over 200 vintage
Pinball machines, Arcade Games, Skee Ball and Video games
will take you into a new reality.
This reality is centered on nostalgia with fun and action as heroes
of their own destiny. And the best part – you become the superhero
who can defy the tedium of life with a little bit of fun and
a lot of action.
The Silverball Museum is the brainchild of Rob Ilvento, a food executive
and Steve Zuckerman, co-founder of Clipper Magazine. Both
men value the nostalgic recreation of the New Jersey Boardwalk
and the excitement of a unique way to enjoy the good old days.
“We have people coming here every day because they love the
atmosphere and the vintage machines,” said General Manager
Dayna DiDomenico.
She’s right. The vibe is electric with bing, ting and wham sounds
that reverberate from all corners of this time warp of fun and fantasy.
The machines are a reminder that time waits for some people
at the right time. Some of these pinball machines and arcade games
are from the 40s to the 80s. The vintage machines are often rotated
from their other location in Asbury Park, New Jersey.
There is also a row of Skee-Ball lanes that will have you testing
out your eye-hand coordination and ability to score points with a
Silverball’s Blue Bar located on the main floor of the museum
offers Happy Hour Food/Beverages Monday-Friday 11am-7pm.
Don’t miss out on a chance to book your event here at the Silverball Museum!
quick throw of a ball. There are new machines like the The Beatlemania
Pinball Machine, The Who’s Tommy Pinball Wizard, The
1979 Kiss Machine, and dozens of other colorful neon games that
make you want to have your mail transferred and stay put.
Some of the games are from as far back as 1931 and include
video games like Pac-Man, Galaga, Centipede, Donkey Kong, Space
Invaders and others. But there’s more to this fun-filled paradise for
children and adults. They have a retro-lounge and bar with Tiffany
lamps and food for whatever ails you (too much reality, boredom or
just down time).
They have burgers with French Fries, pizza, meatball sliders,
nachos, Chicken tenders, Quesadillas and other fun foods that
will make you lick your lips and marinate in the juice of it all.
The best part is that they have Happy Hour from 11am to 7pm
Monday to Friday with food prices that match the same nostalgia
as the machines themselves. Beer for $3, a great burger and fries
for $6 and $5 Pizza, Caesar Salad, Jumbo Hot Dog, Cocktails and
Jersey fries. They are open with a full menu from 11am to 2am
(insomniacs rejoice).
The two floors of this wizardry of gaming and naming make
it the perfect place for a private party. They host over 50 parties
per month and have time and space for more. You have your
choice of two venues on the 2nd floor. One has a bar made from
a ship with seven flat screen TV’s, air hockey game, pinball machines
and a dance floor.
The other side of this floor hosts a bit more of a Rat Pack feel with
vintage tables and chairs, Foosball Table, Vintage Pinball machines,
a Vintage Juke Box and a signed guitar from Tom Petty on the wall.
Both locations are the perfect venue for fun, bonding, celebration
and team building.
For Private Events, you can bring in your own DJ - or music
- or use their overhead music (that can be changed for
your preference). They can cater the event for you, and you
can choose from their full catering menu. One thing for sure
you can’t beat the atmosphere for festivities and fanfare. They
have birthday parties, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, Weddings, Corporate
and charity events, reunions and more.
There are memberships available that enable you to go
to the Silverball Museum as often as you want, daily passes
and hourly fees. There are special prices on Tuesday and
Sunday, seasonal passes, monthly and weekly prices and after
10pm it’s only $10.
“It’s so much fun here that we had one fellow who came
by train from Miami every day,” said DiDomenico. Manager
Shawkat has the perfect description of this adventure-filled
museum of adventure. “The atmosphere here is the best. It’s
impossible to be in a bad mood here. The games, the food and
the music make everyone smile - the fun is endless.”
He’s right. Fun is the everywhere you turn in this
9,000-square-foot homage to the “good old days” when it
was not dictated by smart phones and 4000 TV channels.
There’s something to capture your imagination – and your
dexterity – at every turn.
Sunday is “Rock Star Karaoke” from 8 to 11pm. So, dust off
your musical muscle and sing along with a live band.
The lights are bright, the tone is dim, and the fun factor is
off the charts. If you’re doctor had a prescription pad for recreation,
he would send you to The Silverball Museum for a dose
of fun and fantasy.
Try your hand in getting the High Score on
the original Coney Island Skeeball machines!
By nicol jenkins | Photos by melissa korman
Looking to get some bodywork done on
your car? Get quality auto assistance from
the experts at Scratch Car in Delray Beach.
They are the leading provider for Mobile Auto Care in Florida
- specializing in all types of AutoBody Repair Service and
Auto Scratch Repair Service in Boca Raton, Delray Beach,
Boynton Beach, Lake Worth and Wellington.
The Delray Beach body shop has recently expanded and has a
larger space at 1 Linton Blvd. The owner credits the success of
the business to excellent customer service and competitive pricing
for quality work.
“We offer good pricing and great customer service to our customers,”
said Adrian Cardoso, owner of Scratch Car.
Scratch Car offers a wide variety of services from full collision
auto work to fixing dents and everything in between. They can
also repair mirror covers, fenders, bumpers, and any auto body
repair. The local body shop has added new equipment including a
Frame Machine and a Lift.
The owner warns customers to beware of shops or individuals
that are trying to scam people. It’s important to check to make
sure the company or individual working on your vehicle is licensed
and insured. Also, beware of people approaching you in
parking lots!
“We are a licensed and insured company and I have been in the
business for over 30 years,” said the owner.
Scratch Car goes above and beyond for their customers to make
sure they are taken care of. They offer pick up and delivery of your vehicle.
The staff even takes the time to help with insurance deductibles.
“We treat our customers like people, not numbers. Some people
see dollar signs when someone comes in with a car that has been
damaged. One customer came to us with a surface scratch on his
car. He was quoted $300 to repair the bumper, but I wiped it off
with a compound and didn’t charge him a thing,” said Scratch Car
Manager Fernando Rezende.
“When you make an appointment in advance we know when
you’re coming to have your car repaired. That way we can expedite
your repairs and get the car back to you in one day instead of
three or four days. We also have the same person working on your
car from start to finish. This way you get a better quality repair
that is more affordable,” said Fernando.
Scratch Car also offers a Mobile Repair Service that will come
to your house to fix your car anywhere from Deerfield Beach to
Wellington. The mobile technicians will come to your house and
do the necessary repairs in your driveway. The mobile techs
carry the tools and equipment they need on their mobile repair
truck.“Thanks to the innovation of the painting process and chemicals
available we can put an end to the old time-consuming pro-
cess.” This service is by appointment only and is available
Monday to Saturday. There is no extra charge for this Mobile
at-home service.
The staff prides themselves on customer service.
“We are behind our customers in everything we do. We are
honest and do what we say we’re going to do. A lot of our business
is from word of mouth and we try to be polite and friendly
to our customers,” said Scratch Car owner Adrian Cardoso.
The customers praise the staff and owner for their dedication.
“Super recommend this place. They took care of everything
with the insurance, kept me posted on the work that was being
done on my car. They were so courteous and helped me
throughout the process of having my car towed and getting
fixed. My car looks like new again. Thank you, Scratch Car,”
said one happy client.
“The car looks brand new as if nothing happened. Efficient,
price flooring
They’ve Got You Covered
By diane feen | photos by melissa korman
Price Flooring is taking innovation to a new level. They’re
remodeling their store to display the exciting new products that
so brilliantly line the walls and floors of their Delray location.
And why not? Price Flooring has become the “go to” store for
everything in home décor. You want flooring – they have it. If
you want new flooring, kitchen or baths – Price has the products,
the installers and the designers to guarantee your happiness.
“We are a one-stop-shop catering to our clients every need when
it comes to flooring, kitchen and baths. We want everything to go
smoothly and we want our customers to enjoy the process of remodeling,
not stress out over it,” said Nicole Price.
To make sure everything goes smoothly Price Flooring has all
stages of development in place before the process begins. There is
a kitchen and bath designer who helps with the layout to make sure
you are getting the right products for the right space in your home.
Their kitchen designer – Armando – has over 17 years experience
and will work with you to make sure the size, color and materials all
work together to give you the bathroom or kitchen of your dreams.
When using Price Flooring for your kitchen renovations they will
show you a three-dimensional preview of what the finished kitchen
will look like. This way there are no unwanted surprises. They have
hardware, cabinets, vanities and plumbing fixtures.
“We have everything for the home right here at Price Flooring.
Our design consultants are trained to make sure you get the best
possible outcome and most beautiful design for you,” said Nicole.
According to Nicole, when you shop at Price Flooring they will coordinate
the floor, bathroom and kitchen remodel at no extra charge.
“We want to show people what is new in the market and help
them keep up with the best new products for their lifestyle and design
preferences,” she said.
One of the newest flooring products to come on the market – and
the most exciting – are water-proof wood floors from Shaw. They’re
green friendly and come in all colors. “We get the best pricing from
Shaw because we are the largest Shaw dealer in the state of Florida.
We are priced right,” said Nicole smiling.
The new waterproof floors are what everyone is talking about.
And excited about. “I am beyond happy about my new floors and
working with Price Flooring was a dream – it was wonderful all
around,” said Shelly, who recently purchased luxury waterproof
vinyl plank flooring for her living room and Lanai. “It’s incredible,
everyone thinks the floor is real wood. We dragged furniture across
the floor without one scratch and it cleans up like magic. It feels
like real wood on bare feet and soft to walk on. This is the best design
decision I’ve ever made. I’m beyond happy, not only is the floor
great but working with the Price Flooring team was a dream.”
The planks come in all colors and textures, as well as embossed to
give an authentic designer look. It also gives you durability, said Nicole.
Not only that, according to Nicole you don’t have to rip up your
existing tile floor (an arduous and expensive process), the new
planks can easily be put over your existing floor. “The installation
process is much quicker, and luxury waterproof vinyl is easy to install
(it’s a floating floor). We have the most innovative designs and
styles for everyone’s taste. There is no mess or demolition, installation
is a breeze with little down time.”
Their luxury vinyl flooring has a rigid core and is strong in constitution,
yet soft on your feet. Many are green friendly and the biggest plus in
low maintenance. There is no grout to get clean or get dirty, said Nicole.
Price also has another great offering for all carpet sales. If you
replace your existing carpet with new carpet from Price Flooring,
you get upgraded to a premium 8-pound padding at no additional
charge. This padding is denser, softer and helps the carpet wear
better. “It’s a huge savings,” said Nicole.
Another perk of shopping at Price Flooring is that they have experienced
people go to your house and measure for each product.
They will educate you on the best products to maximize your space
and your comfort level. Let’s face it, renovation is not an easy job,
both mentally and physically. So, the optimal idea is to rely on the
professionals. “We want to go out to your house and make sure we
meet our client’s expectations as well as educate them on what is
best for their needs,” said Drew.
Nicole agrees. “We will hold your hand and make sure you know
exactly what you’re getting and what it will entail. We want to make
sure we’re providing the products that meets client’s needs. It sets
us (and you) up for success and smooth sailing,” said Nicole.
Price Flooring is also family owned and operated. Nicole and Ray
Price (founder of Price Flooring) are husband and wife. Peter Price
is Ray’s brother. Nicole’s brother Lucien works there and so does
Kim. What you see if what you get – one big happy family.
The operative word is happy. Customers often stop by for a bag of
popcorn and friendly chat with Ray, Nicole or the rest of the crew at
Price. “Our customers become part of our family. They stop by and
often tell us how much they love their new flooring and say ‘hello’.
Our home is your home here at Price Flooring,” said Nicole.
Stop by Price Flooring and see their new showroom – it’s easy to
shop and easy to update or replace your flooring, kitchen or baths.
“From the moment you walk through our doors, walk on your new
floors, Price is right for you.”
Gulf stream school
Celebrating 80 Years
With An Eye On The Future
By nicol jenkins
Gulf Stream School has a long
history of excellence in education.
The independent school is
celebrating its 80th year.
Gulf Stream School has a heritage of fostering educational
excellence for Pre-kindergarten, Elementary, and Middle
school students. The school primarily serves Boynton Beach,
Delray Beach, Lake Worth, Boca Raton, Lantana, Manalapan, and
the surrounding Palm Beach area. Graduates have been welcomed
at schools around the world.
They are a community of learners - sharing, discussing, debating,
and solving new challenges every day. As their values indicate,
they “actively engage students and faculty in a thought provoking
educational experience that fosters the skills, habits, and passion
for lifelong learning.”
Their program’s approach is about more than just the subject
matter. It is about inspiring and empowering students to develop
intellectual curiosity and achieve personal success.
The school faculty maintains traditional learning goals while
keeping current with the latest innovations in technology.
“Gulf Stream School has 80 years of history but we are mindful of
the future of learning. We offer an innovative curriculum and programs
enhanced by technology; we continuously review standards
for the use of technology, incorporating new techniques with traditional
methods of education,” said Michael Mahady, Director of
Admission & Secondary School Placement for Gulf Stream School.
“It is the way society is evolving. Children now utilize numerous
electronic devices on a daily basis. We have an obligation to prepare
children for high school, college and the real world. We make
sure they are prepared for the future,” said Casey Wilson, Director
of Development for Gulf Stream School.
The local school has added new programs and curriculum to enhance
advanced learning. One future enhancement is the summer
renovation of the library, converting the space into a collaborative
photo gulf stream school archives
learning commons by adding film and video editing, multimedia,
robotics, 3D printing, and more. They also offer a wide variety of
courses and afterschool programs including a STEM program,
iMovie to create videos and commercials, robotics, along with
cooking classes, drama, arts and athletics.
“At Gulf Stream School, we feel it is critical to support our teachers
by providing meaningful and impactful opportunities for professional
development. Our teachers are enthusiastic about continuing
their own education. They are passionate about seeking
better ways to inspire our students,” said Wilson.
The teachers believe that active collaboration and the integration
of ideas, while incorporating emerging technologies in the
classroom have helped students excel in learning.
“Watching the children in computer class brings me great excitement
while they collaborate with their peers. The projects require
the students to draw on information from many different disciplines
to come up with creative solutions. For example, math skills
are used when making a model to scale to 3D print or determining
the angle to turn a robot. Language arts skills are necessary to read
for meaning during the design research and development, and for
communicating their ideas. As the students work through problems
and test different solutions, they are required to think critically and
persevere until they succeed,” said Bridget Langford, Lower School
Science and Technology Teacher.
Shawn Harahush, Middle School Math and Robotics Teacher, said,
“The robotics program fuses instruction with key concepts such as
logic, trial and error and proportional reasoning. It allows students
to work in teams to solve open-ended tasks. The program encourages
students to plan, create, test and evaluate and test their ideas. It
fosters the development of 21st century skills such as problem solving,
programming, and experimentation. The program makes the
students more aware of the connection among math, science, and the
world around them. In addition, to the technical skills they are learning,
it also is a lot of fun and encourages an abundance of creativity.”
Gulf Stream School takes a personal interest in getting to know
each applicant and his or her family. It is their objective to understand
your educational goals and to provide you with a comprehensive
understanding of the school, its curriculum and culture.
They invite parents and prospective students to visit the campus,
see them in action, and talk with current faculty and students as a
first step in the admission process.
Contact Gulf Stream School to schedule a tour and find out more
about their many programs.
with the market,” said Mindel, adding, “We have a lot of design initiatives
ambience. The palette is natural and classic so anyone coming
in, regardless of style, can make it their own. The models also have
a good mix of natural and classic elements, such as the wood tones,
and the herringbone floor pattern. The designers wanted to focus
on a mix of modern and classic elements. A great example of this
is the use of material in the kitchen. The glossy white cabinets are
paired with warm wood tones, and a classic large striation quartz
island for the focal point. They played up the large amount of space
in the bathrooms with wood cabinets and the marbelesque shower
tiles and finish; while also emphasizing the large scale with the
over-sized mirrors and various levels of light.
Come fall in love with 236 Fifth Avenue luxury condominiums
From lights to locks to cameras to the temperature of any room
in your house, and much more, TechnoLiving can ensure that you
will have a perfect fit with their products and services.
Technology is still in its infancy, and consumers can invest in
products and systems that are soon obsolete or inflexible with
other devices and have poor manageability. There are many varieties
of technology platforms today. TechnoLiving’s licensed experts
will be able to outperform its competitors by ensuring that your
electronic assets are optimized and maintained not just for today
but for tomorrow as well. They can customize outdoor grand theaters,
TV installation, sound systems, lights, temperature control
and surveillance cameras, or full home installation. They can also
do commercial installation and can work with a customer who is
purchasing a new construction home.
The experts at TechnoLiving will come to your home or you can
come to their office for a consultation.
“We are certified and insured professionals. What makes our
service unique is that we meet the expectations of the client on
the first visit,” said Damian Maravankin, Director of Operations for
TechnoLiving.
The local company offers white glove service customized to
each client’s needs. They can integrate all your electronic devices
to work together, such as having the thermostat work from your
phone when you’re not at home, or being able to watch your security
cameras when you are away, and much more.
TechnoLiving team of professionals has been serving their customers
for 18 years in Palm Beach County.
“With us the difference is we are very personalized. Our team of
employees is very friendly; and when a tech is assigned to your job
we continue with that tech. If you need a consultation to help decide
what is best, we have specialists to visit your home and will give their
best advice on the size of the TV or sound system,” added Damian.
The local company keeps their prices very competitive.
“We buy directly from the manufacturer and can match any pricing
with any TV, electronics, or device,” said Damian.
“From the moment we meet the client for the new project and
work with them as the technology advisor, we help them with all
the technology and new Smart devices they will have installed on
the new home and make sure everything is in place. We can work
with an electrician, a contractor or a project manager to make your
home a Smart Home,” explained Damian.
The technicians are always up to date on the newest products,
certifications and more.
“We make sure that the technicians are updated on the latest
products every week; and we are in touch with the manufacturers,
so when we go to our clients house we can provide the best service
and experience. We offer our clients the equipment that is right for
them,” he said.
They also have an in-house IT support team to assist clients with
any help they may need with their computer, iPad or other device. Service
plans are available, especially for people who don’t live here year
round. They can access your system remotely or go to your home. They
also offer Disaster Prevention to make sure your home is safe; some
services offered are sensors on the water heater, washing machine and
other areas of your home or office to alert or prevent flooding.
“It is very rewarding to see the customer happy when the work is
finished. We want to exceed your expectations,” said Damian.
Customers praise TechnoLiving staff for their customer service.
“Forget the rest, TechnoLiving is the best! Jill took my call on a
Friday. Damian removed my old sound equipment and installed
a new SONOS 4 Zone System on Monday! They did exactly what
they said they were going to do. No surprises, no up selling, no high
pressure, just good old fashioned great work and phenomenal service.
I could not have been happier. I recommend them without reservation,”
stated a happy customer.
“The TechnoLiving team did a wonderful job installing my home
security cameras, they arrived at the schedule time and started
working immediately; the installation was professionally done, and
on a timely manner. The clean up was done as they worked, Damian
did an awesome job and explained everything to me before and after
the job. I highly recommend TechnoLiving, and would definitely
use them for my next project,” stated another customer.
Champion For Those In Need
Sharon DiPietro is a study in contrast. She is
strong, yet compassionate, loving yet fiercely
protective of the objects of her affection.
As a child DiPietro had to fend for herself quite often. Her grandmother
Macie was her role model (and savior) and the person
who gave her confidence to pursue her dreams.
But as a young child her dreams were about helping others. She
canvassed her neighborhood looking to do good deeds for those in
need. “I would see if the elderly people needed me to run errands for
them, pull their weeds or cut their grass,” said the statuesque blonde
raised in Cincinnati and living in Delray.
DiPietro is not bashful about her strong faith, and her childhood
attending church and teaching Sunday School. “My faith anchors
me. God has given me a purpose and that purpose is to give voice
to the voiceless.”
The voiceless in her orbit now are distressed animals of all sizes
and shapes and children in need. She is relentless in her desire to
make the world a better place and continues to be a beacon of light
for Tri-County Animal Rescue. She’s been on the board for seven
years and Chairman of the Board for the past three.
DiPietro is dedicated to their Capital Campaign and is Chair of their
annual Doggie & Kittie Ball, that has become one of the most coveted
and colorful charitable events in town.
It’s not just formality that has driven this faith-driven wife, mother
and grandmother to her position – it’s passion and an unwavering
commitment.
“We are bringing to fruition phase one of our extended campus for
Tri-County. This includes The Veterinarian Center, a building for special
needs pets, senior fur-babies and hospice care. We’re adding a
mausoleum, increasing in-ground pet burial and bringing our thrift
shop here. There will also be a boarding and grooming facility. The
new campus will have a 64,000-square-foot footprint.”
When DiPietro speaks – people listen. And when she sets her mind
to something it’s like a bullet train coming at full speed. When she
talks about the upcoming 17th Annual Doggie & Kittie Ball (April
14th) her hands move quickly, and she exudes the elation of the
event. “The Doggie & Kittie Ball is going to be awesome this year. It’s
going to be high energy and interactive, so get your hats and jeans –
diamonds and pearls - and have fun.”
And when DiPietro says fun, she means it. They are having the
Steve Chase Band, a casino, interactive gaming tables, blackjack,
roulette, Texas hold ‘em, a dance floor, dinner, chip cage, pre-event
social hour and a room of decadent desserts.
Perhaps the biggest dessert – metaphorically – is DiPietro’s philanthropic
bent and caring heart. This Midwest woman of steely determination
generally flies under the radar, but there is always something
brewing just beneath the surface.
“Sharon is dynamic, passionate and tireless. I admire her professionalism
and responsibility as chair of a large 501(c) 3 corporation.
She runs her committee meetings with a sharp laser focus – and it’s
not easy when you have 15 to 20 people with many ideas and a lot of
work to do. Sharon does it so well – she’s organized and creative,” said
travel agent Scott Grody, who’s on the Doggie & Kittie Ball Committee.
Being a businesswoman was the warm-up for this earth-bound angel
for the voiceless. Her resume is incredibly impressive with stellar
achievements that run the gamut from sales to telecommunications
company co-owner, investment portfolio manager and real estate.
She was one of the first women to travel the country as a sales
rep for Hanes’ L’eggs pantyhose. She opened three states and maintained
national accounts, trained salespeople and earned recognition
as a top salesperson.
“It was challenging as a woman travelling alone during that era,
but also tremendously rewarding. My favorite memories include being
a guest on national televised talk shows, one with Nick Clooney
(George’s father). Now that was memorable!”
She was an assistant for Carl and Robert Lindner who owned
American Financial Corporation, Penn Central, United Brands, the
Ocean Reef Club, shopping malls and retail stores.
But it was love that sent DiPietro to South Florida. When on vacation
in Boca Raton her daughter LeAnna met a boy, fell in love and
moved to South Florida. “I had it in my head to move to Florida someday
- it was on my bucket list. But my daughter accelerated it.”
Love intervened once again in her life when she moved to Florida.
“I saw an ad for an assistant to the GM at Boca West Country Club, Jay
DiPietro. I didn’t like him at first. But after a few months we developed
a solid friendship and eventually became a couple.”
Though her daughter left South Florida, Sharon stayed for Jay. And
after 33 years together you could say it was a good decision. Especially
since Sharon and Jay collectively have become the quintessential
philanthropic duo. They started the Seminole Region Charity Golf
Tournament that raises money for underprivileged children. They
donate to organizations like SOS Children’s Village, Florence Fuller,
Unicorn Foundation, Place of Hope and many others.
If charity starts at home, it was Sharon who jump started a colorful
life for husband Jay. “I fell in love with Sharon because of her beautiful
heart. She loves unconditionally, and for the first time I saw pastels
and flowers. She changed my life in so many ways – I saw beauty for
the first time. I even had flowers put all over Boca West,” said the
President and General Manager Emeritus of Boca West.
It’s a mutual love fest for this couple who spread their love around
like seeds in a flower pot of goodness. They attend charity events almost
every night and are keepers of the flame for those who need a
helping hand.
Jay and Sharon have nine children, 24 grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren. If you count Sharon’s fur-babies (and her Yorkies
Bella and Baer) she has an infinite number of children and is the
loudest voice for the voiceless.
SCUOLA VECCHIA
Culinary Passion And Authenticity
Scuola Vecchia is in the rarified
world of singularity. It’s one of the
only Napolitano pizza restaurants
in Delray, and one of the few with
roots that date back 200 years.
102 | march 2019 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Fettuccini Bolognese
Pistacchio Pesto Esalsiccia
But luckily you don’t have to fly to Naples, Italy to indulge in this
delicate Italian passion. A lot of people know this – hence the
reason there was a line out the door on a recent Saturday night.
Their slow and steady rise to Napolitano nirvana is due to the
passion and consistency of its founders Sharon and Shaun Aloisio.
Sharon was trained in the Neapolitan-style of pizza making from
world-renowned Chef and Master Pizzaiuoli, Roberto Caporuscio.
She stayed true to its namesake (and ingredients) and soon people
began to appreciate the subtlety of its divinity.
The pizza is lighter than traditional Italian pizza and the dough is
ground slowly without additives and seven different wheats from
around the world. Sharon knows these statistics because she lives and
breathes life as a Neapolitan expert and chef. Her son Shaun has adopted
this Naples art of pizza making as though it was his birthright.
And perhaps it is. When Shaun makes one of his amazing Pizzas
(like the Pizza con Pistachio e Salaccia) delight congeals with greatness.
The Pistachio Pesto, Sausage and Smoked Buffalo Mozzarella
on thin homemade pizza dough is unparalleled.
Part of the totality of this mouthwatering marvel is enhanced by
their wood burning oven made of volcanic stone. Shipped to Delray
from Naples, it heats to 1000 degrees and seals in the moisture and
flavors that are so delicately ordained. They also use Caputo flour (with
no additives) for the pizza dough that is low in fat and light as a feather.
Add that to the imported Italian San Marzano tomato sauce and you
Burrata Al Tartufo
Cannoli Ricotta Cheese Cake
have a pizza that seduces the senses. “The Pizza con Pistachio e Salaccia
just blew me away. There is so much flavor in the sausage with
pesto that you can taste the authenticity and passion that went into
the dish,” said Bob Foster, who just returned from a bike trip in Italy.
Others agree. “We have been to Scuola Vecchia many times and it
never disappoints. Sharon and her team are fantastic and make you
feel right at home. Great service, great food and great atmosphere.
A must try when you are in Delray Beach. Authentic pizza-so good!”
Scuola Vecchia has become so popular that their Neapolitanstyle
roots on the Avenue have become legend. They are hailed as
the best pizza in Florida by The Daily Meal (and Trip Advisor), and
are lovingly referred to in the Book, “Where to Eat Pizza as “some
of the most stellar pizza this side of Naples, and frankly anywhere.”
With all this fanfare comes dishes that are bursting with flavor
and surprises. They recently added a special appetizer – Truffle
Burrata. This subtle, yet stupendous dish is made with homemade
mozzarella accented with Italian truffle oil. Grape tomatoes and
baby arugula co-mingle with this cheesy delicacy and Homemade
Focaccia bread comes on the side.
“In Italy it’s about food, family and wine,” said Sharon, who with
Shaun have been a fixture on Atlantic Avenue for eight years. Their
small yet gracious blue and white pizza restaurant with homemade
pasta dishes and desserts to swoon over – has come full circle. At
first people didn’t understand the strict adherence to authenticity
and subtle flavoring. But it was only a matter of time before everyone
realized that this Naples tradition is indeed a culinary treasure.
“People are more appreciative of what we do now. They finally
understand that it’s about quality over quantity. We use a homemade
old school way of making dough and we make the cheese inhouse
with Italian oils - rosemary, garlic, lemon and basil oil,” said
Shaun, who is as good a father as a pizza maker.
Sharon, on the other hand, is the devoted and dedicated creator
of all things pasta. You know when you’re eating her freshly made
Fettuccine Bolognese or Lasagna de Carne (meat lasagna). You get
that seasonal high just like you feel when walking on the pristine
beach first thing in the morning.
It is the beach that charmed Sharon – and inspired her to create
one of their favorite pizzas – The Scuola Vecchia. This homemade
white pizza is made with fresh mozzarella, shrimp, arugula and
grape tomatoes. “Our pizza is very light, and we make the mozzarella
cheese on the premises. We’re so close to the beach I felt we
needed a pizza with seafood from the Gulf Coast.”
There is another ingredient to the success of this family business,
and its tradition. Maybe not a tradition in the US anymore, but in
Europe it’s a de rigueur. “People like the fact that the owner is on
site and that the food is homemade not frozen. Everything here is
made from scratch,” said Sharon.
The food is so coveted that one customer waited over 45 minutes
for the fresh meatballs to arrive at her table. That is also the reason
Scuola Vecchia has regular customers who come every week (and
sometimes every day) for homemade eggplant parmesan or a Regina
Margherita Pizza.
They have a full selection of salads – the Caprese with handmade
mozzarella, tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil and basil, and Girella, with
homemade mozzarella stuffed with eggplant, zucchini, prosciutto di
parma and salad. For those with dietary restrictions they offer Gluten-free
pizza made with fresh homemade gluten-free flour.
Sometimes the best things in life come last – especially if you have
a sweet tooth. Sharon’s homemade Tiramisu is indeed a wonderful
thing. The softness and sweetness of its delicate flavors dance delightfully
in your mouth. They also have homemade ricotta cannoli
chocolate chip cheesecake and locally made Italian gelato.
Though Sharon and Shaun are not artists in a classic sense their
culinary artistry is evident in everything they do. The pizza making
is precise and steeped in tradition, and their pastas, paninis, salads
and desserts are what dreams are made of.
What Are The Best Diagnosis
Tools to Keep Pets Healthy?
We are witnessing vast increases in health challenges that
our pets are facing today versus years past. In our previous
articles, we have addressed many. Suffice to say,
with cancer, allergies, diabetes and behavior issues on the increase,
not only do we have to work hard at preventing health challenges
through our attention to lifestyle and nutrition, but also understand
what are the true influences that are driving these challenges.
Diagnosing the specifics starts with our astute observation and
knowledge. We are with our pets constantly and we can often notice
when there is a change in their personality and physiology. We
see the lumps and bumps on the skin, the limp, the scratching and
itching, the skin rash and hair loss plus many other symptoms. We
realize it isn’t normal and therefore anxiously seek answers and
advice from our local animal healthcare providers. We are hopeful
that with all the new technology and diagnostic tools available, we
can get answers and a solution.
We are all familiar with the most common diagnostic tools such
as blood profiles, x-rays, various scans and sensitivity tests. Unfortunately,
most of the results do not reveal the answers that we need.
Most generalized testing such as blood panels are inconclusive or
do not show any issues. X-rays and scans are difficult to interpret
which again is inaccurate and can be very expensive. While these
can be useful in true emergencies such as accidents and injuries,
their usefulness can be questionable. We also must rely on the professional
opinion of the health provider to guide us.
Before we start this process of clinical diagnostics, we must also
understand what is truly problematic. We know that diarrhea and
vomiting can be a symptom of many different health issues. In itself,
those particular issues are nothing more than housekeeping
and cleansing. It is usually self-limiting which means it will correct
itself over the cleansing process. However, we do have to use our
diagnostic skills to evaluate what may have caused these changes?
Since most health challenges today are highly tied to toxicity, we
have to look at the sources of toxic chemicals that our pets are exposed
to. Food additives such as preservatives, colors, synthetic
nutrients, drugs and medications, vaccines and household cleaning
and lawn products are all contributors to the biochemical imbalances
that create so called “disease.”
These toxins are entering the body through the air which is processed
by the lungs, ingestion of food and water which is processed
by the gastrointestinal tract and absorbed through the skin. These
toxins are killing and stressing the exposed cells of the body which
start the process of breaking down the body. Critical functions of
organs are compromised, reducing their capacity to produce their
life and healing hormones, enzymes and other components. These
components are needed to unleash the nutrients essential to heal
and maintain optimal health.
We are hopeful that your new understanding as presented will
give you the knowledge to better understand the “whys” which can
lead to a more accurate diagnosis. With this skill, we can identify
potential challenges earlier and make corrections more targeted
and successful. Our knowledge and our vision are nature’s finest
diagnosis tool.
dang cute but when you meet me you’ll know
that’s just the beginning of my charms. I’m a
happy to be hanging out here but I’m so ready
to have a loving, forever home.”
“I’m Dottie, a unique Chihuahua blend girl
looking for my happily-ever-after! I was rescued
from Puerto Rico, where so many dogs became
homeless after Hurricane Maria as the island
is struggling to recover. I’m so lucky to be here,
but I just need my last step to a forever home
now. Stop by and let’s meet!”
“I’m a fabulous lady with gorgeous white fur
than meets the eye. I’ll be your lap kitty on a
